Recap / Dragon Ball Z Abridged CV 9

Cell is lost in thought while standing in the ring for the Cell Gamesnote  when he gets startled by the kookiest of all Marvel characters, Deadpool, who suddenly appears behind him making quips. Cell sends Deadpool flying into one of the pillars at the corners of the ring with what should be a bone shattering thump, so he's surprised when Deadpool pops back up mere moments later with no sign of any damage.

Deadpool reveals that he was contracted to kill Cell, a possibility that hadn't occurred to Cell, and a cutaway reveals that none other than Nappa hired Deadpool. (With the promise of making a Deadpool-Spiderman crossover movie happen.) Cell is less than impressed by Deadpool's crazed assassin schtick, however, or the premise of the joke behind their fight (that Deadpool and Cell will be stuck in an infinite cycle of Cell temporarily "killing" Deadpool only for Deadpool to bounce back with jokes and quips), and says as much.

Regardless, Deadpool seems intent on staying around and trying to complete the hit, but with neither able to permanently kill the other, it seems like things are at a stalemate... until Deadpool receives a call from Wolverine, who summons him to help the X-Men with a "Code Phoenix." Between the call from Wolverine and generally losing interest in the whole affair with Cell, Deadpool leaves, although he takes a parting shot or two at Cell on his way out.

  • Acting for Two: In-Universe, the stinger sees Takahata101!Deadpool complaining that they had the perfect opportunity to have him and Cell (also voiced by Takahata101) face each other, but passed him up for Xander Mobus!Deadpool.
  • All Periods Are PMS: Deadpool gets a call from Wolverine about a Code Phoenix, which he says is like once a month with her, and considers making a period joke. Given the reputation it's gotten her...
  • Angrish: Wolverine launches into a tirade of this with Deadpool after he makes the above period joke from outside the call.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Deadpool may be just as wacky as he is in the comics, but he's also just as dangerous, as he repeatedly slices off and severs limbs from Cell, up-to and including his head.
  • Boring Insult: Cell acknowledges and lampshades the basic idea of the skit, where he "kills" Deadpool, Deadpool comes back to life and makes jokes until Cell kills him again, etc. Cell notes that routine isn't really all that funny and seems to think the whole thing is at least a bit trite and unoriginal.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: As always, Deadpool is not bound by the laws and rules of whatever medium he is in. He makes several references to various alternate timelines or version of the X-Men saga in movies.
  • Brick Joke: In the opening moments of the short Cell thinks to himself that maybe he will spare Betty White. Towards the end when it seems like Deadpool has left, Cell once again resumes his thinking and decides that Betty White has had her time and then contemplates whether there's anyone else he wants to spare.
  • Continuity Nod: As Deadpool leaves, he tells Cell to give Goku his condolences about Superman.
  • Credits Gag:
    • The credits are taken over by Takahata!Deadpool whining about not being cast for the short, and starting an argument with Xander Mobus!Deadpool over it.
      Taka!Pool: Hold the five-hundred-pound gorilla-shaped phone!
Mobus!Pool: Hey! Dickbag! We're doing the annotations! We only got 20 seconds, so...
Taka!Pool: Take your recommended videos and upload them to your sphincter, you wannabe piece of crap!
    • On top of that, the title of the video is formatted as "Deadpool vs Cell" rather than the other way around like the previous ones. Deadpool points this out to Cell at one point and claims to have taken a pay cut to get the top name billing.
  • Didn't See That Coming: After Deadpool explains who he is and why he's there, Cell admits that he hadn't considered that someone might send an assassin after him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Deadpool comments that they run into so many "Phoenix" situations with Jean Gray that it seems like practically once a month, and that he should make a period joke about it, but he considers that below him.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Both Deadpool and Cell's take repeated and comedic injuries including Deadpool cutting off pieces of Cell and Cell blasting Deadpool's head with ki attacks on multiple occasions. Of course, none of it sticks.
  • Hired Guns: Deadpool in a nutshell. The thought of someone sending in a hitman after Cell never crossed his mind.
  • I Call It "Vera": Deadpool calls his swords "Regis" and "Kathy Lee."
  • Inner Thoughts, Outsider Puzzlement: Downplayed example: during one of Deadpool's tangents, he sees himself as being on a tv studio stage, including a pink curtain behind him, and he tosses the sword up in the air where he sees them landing on a pair of chairs that materialize beside him. When we cut back to Cell's point of view, there of course no sign of being on a TV stage and the swords thrown up in the air, rather than landing in a pair of chairs, are instead lying on the ground besides Deadpool.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Very literally. Cell blasts Deadpool in the head with ki beams several times. After a few occasions Deadpool says that he's pretty sure that memories from his childhood are being erased, and while Cell has no issues with losing, say, the memories of Uncle Mickey and his van, he doesn't wanna lose the memory of the first time he touched a boob at chess camp.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Deadpool slices off Cell's arm while he's talking. However, Cell then just calmly asks where his arm went when he realizes he lost it.
Cell: Swords? Buddy, I've got a boy with lavender hair who can give you a rundown on how poorly that's going to work out for where is my arm?
Deadpool: [waving to Cell with his own arm] Yoo-Hoo.
Cell: I stand corrected... also lopsided.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Nappa hired Deadpool to kill Cell, and Cell is perfectly aware of Nappa's identity. But apparently Stan Lee is the one who got Nappa to do so, and it doesn't seem that Deadpool is aware of this.
  • Mistaken Identity: The first time Cell beats on Deadpool, he thinks he killed Spider-Man. Deadpool is disappointed... that Cell used the old mistaking Deadpool and Spiderman joke right at the start of their encounter.
  • Punched Across the Room: As soon as Deadpool appears, Cell knocks him into one of the pillars of the arena.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Cell is barely holding in his contempt toward Deadpool as he cuts off his limbs. After Deadpool cuts off his head, this is how he reacts:
Cell: ARGH!!! I HOPE YOUR SEQUEL BOMBS!
    Deadpool: It won't.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: With both Cell and Deadpool being incredibly sarcastic characters, it's no surprise that the two constantly throw wisecracks at the other throughout the video.
  • Stealth Insult: When Cell makes a dig at Deadpool about being the X-men's sidekick, he retorts with a strangely clever and subtle burn.
Deadpool: Sure I team up with them once and awhile but that's like, when the world is in danger.note
Cell: Zero to pissed in a moment. My goodness you have talent.
  • Talking to Themself: In typical Deadpool fashion, he has a brief conversation with himself and talks to his own dialogue boxes.
  • Tranquil Fury: Cell is feeling done with Deadpool almost as soon as the two start interacting, but he holds it down and speaks mostly politely to Deadpool throughout the video, especially when he steps aside and allows Deadpool to talk to Wolverine, noting that he is being very accommodating to let Deadpool have the conversation shortly after Deadpool has cut off his arms, and that he's very angry at Deadpool. He finally hits his limit at the very end of the video, when Deadpool apparently leaves... and then comes back to decapitate Cell just for fun.

Cell: [sounding bored] DP, I get what you're going for here. I kill you, you don't die, you make jokes, I kill you again, rinse and repeat. It's not even that funny.
