Funny / Hobbs & Shaw

From the Trailers

  • Essentially any interaction between the two main characters whose previous run-ins left them hating each other with the heat of a thousand suns.
    • During their first meeting organized by their would-be Mission Control handlers, they both attack the one-way mirror between them and the handlers and then say the exact same thing about each other at the same time.
"No way! This guy's a real asshole!"
    • During a fight going down the side of a skyscraper, Shaw tricks Hobbs into following the bad guys by cable while he smugly takes the elevator. Hobbs proceeds to do all the heavy work of taking out the Mooks and then tries to shoot at Shaw, safe behind what seems to be bulletproof glass. That glass also turns out to be soundproof because Hobbs swings the lifeless Mook he's clinging to in order to crack that glass, and silently mouths "Fuck You" at his hated 'partner' while Shaw gives a smile and a handclap that says "Real mature, man."
Even more funny is after Hobbs mouths "Fuck you!", Deckard just does a wanking motion to Hobbs.
  • The song chosen for the trailer? "Why Can't We Be Friends?"
  • Hobbs has been keeping count of the number of times he's saved the world.note  It's currently at four.
  • Brixton has Hobbs and Shaw rigged to an electrical device and explains that three shocks will kill them, leading to this exchange:
Hobbs: Here we go, the bad guy speech.
(Brixton gives them both an electric shock for it)
Shaw: You had to open you big mouth, didn't you?
Hobbs: Yeah, I thought it was a cool thing to say in the moment.
  • After arriving back at his family home in Samoa, Hobbs declares they're going to need cars and guns to fight Brixton and his mercs. He opens a sliding door... only to find the expected armoury is now full of traditional tribal weapons (spears, clubs, etc).
Hobbs: Momma, where's all our guns?
Sefina Hobbs: I get rid of them.
Shaw: Very noble, Mrs. Hobbs. [in an undertone to Hattie] We are in serious trouble.
    Hattie: That's an understatement!
  • How does Hobbs take his coffee? He eats it dry, straight out of the can. In case you haven't seen the last couple of movies, Hobbs is still very much the lovechild of Manly Man and Testosterone Poisoning if those two had angry revenge sex.
  • From a meta standpoint, the reveal that Brixton was explicitly superhuman is seen as extremely funny to fans, as it may seem like it's the only way to explain how a single man could be a credible threat to Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham given their history of playing nigh-unstoppable badasses.
  • Hobbs and Shaw each face a door, and Shaw ends up having to dispatch a whole squad of mooks while Hobbs only has to face a Giant Mook with a wrench. Hobbs chose his door on purpose, leaving Shaw with the most "work" to do, dispatching the Giant Mook with a single punch and yawning at Shaw through the window to taunt him while he's busy.
    • Then comes possibly the funniest Borrowed Biometric Bypass scene ever put to film with Hobbs sticking the face of the giant mook against the next door's facial recognition system and having access granted, while Shaw sees access being denied to him repeatedly despite pulling and sticking his mook's head on his next door's facial recognition system three times in a row.
    • Made even funnier by the fact that this stops the buildup of the trailer's soundtrack's beats dead in its tracks.

From the Film

  • The side-by-side scene of Hobbs and Shaw's morning routines. Hobbs wakes up alone, Shaw has a supermodel in his bed. Shaw makes a two egg omelet, Hobbs drinks six raw egg yolks from a glass like Rocky. Hobbs drives his 80s Ford F-150 to the gym, Shaw takes his brand new McLaren to the pub. Later that night they have to grill someone for information, then you start to see what they have in common.
  • The perp Hobbs is after tries to intimidate Hobbs. All he does is kick him in the balls then uppercut him into a tattoo chair.
  • Hobbs tattooing "I <3 COPS" on a perp's head until he gives him the information he wants. He even compliments the female tattoo artist before he leaves.
    Hobbs: "Nice tats."
  • The revelation Hobbs' middle name is... Rebecca.
  • Locke shows off his chest tattoo to match the one Hobbs has. And he just leaves his shirt open throughout his whole conversation with the man and his daughter.
  • Locke boasts of the "long friendship" he and Hobbs have had. Meanwhile, Loeb notes that "Shaw beat the crap out of me in a bar 17 years ago and doesn't even recognize me."
  • Helen Mirren once more steals every scene as Magdalene. That includes the fact she could easily break out of jail any time she wants and just stays in there for a break.
  • Upon learning that they're assigned to work together, the very first thing both Hobbs and Shaw say to each other is nothing short of hilarious:
Hobbs and Shaw (simultaneously): No fucking way!
  • Hobbs is talking to his daughter on the phone, completely unaware that in the room behind him, Hattie has gotten out of her cuffs and is wailing on the poor "new guy" sent in to watch her.
    • Even better is that no one in the office sees it even though the room has clear walls so everyone can see inside.
    • Before that, Hobbs had told the guy that "if she moves, shoot her." Hattie points out the guy has no authority to do that but Hobbs keeps insisting he can.
  • Hattie and Hobbs are holding guns on each other when Shaw enters with his own gun raised.
Hobbs: Hey, this is between me and your girlfriend...
    Hattie: That's disgusting.
    Shaw: That... is my sister.
    (beat)
Hobbs: Bullshit, she's too good looking to be your sister.
  • Shaw comes up with fake names for himself, Hobbs, and Hattie before heading to Moscow. He gives Hobbs the name “Mike Oxmaul.” Hobbs later returns the favor by telling police that Shaw’s name is “Hugh Janus.”
  • Meeting Madam M, Shaw is straight-faced before they share a hot kiss. Hattie's look of utter horror is priceless.
Hattie: I didn't see that coming.
Hobbs: I wish I didn't see that at all.
    Hattie: Me too.
  • Hobbs and Shaw are arguing on the plane when out of nowhere Kevin Hart shows up to cut them off.
    • Even better? Hart's character is a former Delta Force soldier turned air marshal. The looks of the duo trying to see this skinny small guy as a top notch commando are amazing.
  • Upon arriving at the Hobbs family home, Hattie and Deckard have a Side Bet as to whether Hobbs's brother (Jonah) will greet him with a punch to the face. Deckard wins.
Jonah: You know what comes next.
    Hobbs: Yep.
    (PUNCH!!)
    Shaw: See? Not just me.
  • The face-scan scene shown in the trailer is expanded - Shaw has to scan EVERYONE HE JUST KNOCKED OUT while Hobbs gets bored and cranks out a few pushups while he waits. By the end of it, Shaw's mooks are in one big giant pile.
  • Let it be known that in a big budget blockbuster in 2019, Idris Elba said the words "Genocide Shmenocide" with a completely straight face.
    • In general, Brixton has no qualms with being both insanely over-the-top and Obviously Evil.
      Hattie: Who are you?
      Brixton: Bad guy.
  • The final Stinger casually blows two huge twists from late in Game of Thrones, just a few months after it ended. Seems Ryan Reynolds just can't stop doing that. But considering the ending and the fact that it's disliked a LOT, it seems oddly fair.
