Go To

A young man is resurrected into a seemingly normal world, till he gets the shock of his life when he recognizes the name of his favourite childhood hero. Join "Ander" as he navigates the wider Riordan Verse in order to not die a painful existence failure due to all the apocalypses converging around the same time period.
Did I fail to mention that he is only a Clear-Eyed Mortal as well?

Hey There Clear Eyes! is a Percy Jackson and the Olympians AU self-insert made by Sal_man123. Starting before the first book, after his death in his first life, the now named "Ander" finds himself in New York reborn as a baby in the nun orphanage. From there, Ander tries finding his purpose in life in the chaotic and dangerous world that is one filled with myths and legends of ALL pantheons.

The fanfic can be found here on Spacebattles.

Tropes contained in Hey There Clear Eyes! Watch out, spoilers ahead:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: When Robert and Ander faced each other in their first fencing tournament, Ander won the bout in spite of the Navojo young man cheating with magic. He also gained Athena's amorous notice by virtue of being a Renaissance Man.
  • Chosen Conception Partner: Ander's worst nightmare is for a god to decide he would be suitable as father to a demigod. Unbeknownst to him, Athena in her Sophia guise has him in her sights and only restrained herself from saddling him with a kid because he was underage at the time — but she's ready to wait...
  • Cute Bookworm: Sophia. Smart, cute and has an interesting reaction to the War Hammer 40000 game. Makes sense seeing that she is Athena.
  • Game Changer: Ander's iPod for Percy and any other demigod. Possessing every audio lecture of everything he ever learned: language academic skills, survivorship and even some fencing skills (even making sure they were easy to understand). Which would allow any demigod to easily finish primary school.
    • Even further for Percy, besides getting the iPod, he also gets a recommendation letter for his previous school where he was considered The Ace and a letter for a teacher he considers best dealing with Percy's issues with ADHD. Said teacher also considered him his favourite student.
  • Geeky Turn-On: Ander's attempts to convince Sophia to leave him alone by showing off just how nerdy he is only manage to charm her further. Obviously the goddess of wisdom would get interested in a young man who loves strategy games and learns as much as he can in as many fields of knowledge as he can. She actually gets so excited by his Rousing Speech that she almost gives birth on the spot.
  • God in Human Form: Sophia, the girl attempting to date Ander is actually Athena.
  • Heroic BSoD: Twice in a very short amount of time, when Ander meets Percy Jackson and immediately after, meets Poseidon and Pegasus. The latter meeting is even more of a shocker because Ander realizes this means he is Clear-Eyed.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Ander doesn't see himself as a nice person since you shouldn't praise somebody for showing the minimum decency expected from a human being. Thing is, he has a very skewed opinion on what constitues "minimum decency", leading everyone that knows the guy to adore him — and thoroughly blow a gasket when he decides to vanish in thin air.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Ander has issues about people noticing him and having expectations, being content to spend his life wallowing in quiet obscurity. Learning he was reincarnated in the Riordanverse causes him a major Freak Out when he realizes he's very much at risk to gain the attention of monsters or gods for being a smidge too brilliant and talented.
  • The Jailbait Wait: When she heard Ander's Rousing Speech, Athena barely restrained herself from giving birth on the spot because he still had a few months to go before his eighteenth birthday, and isn't ready yet for fatherhood.
  • Large Ham: Richard Robertson apparently believes in shônen conventions when meeting a Worthy Opponent. Nobody else at the fencing tournament was impressed, and Ander describes him as "the Energizer Bunny".
  • Magical Native American: Ander is extremely aware of the racial stereotype and how degrading it is, but he has no other good plan but to beg for his Native friend's help on the supernatural world and hope he won't be taken for insane, as he really wishes to avoid the Greek and Roman factions.
  • Meaningful Name: Ander comes from the Greek root andrôs, "man". It certainly fits with his desire to be mundane and boring, merely a man among so many others, alongside his complete lack of links to a pantheon or anything supernatural when the story begins. Interestingly, the author didn't know that.
  • No Guy Wantsto Be Chased: Played With. While Ander is certainly attempting to avoid Sophia, he's not doing it strictly because he is being chased but from different reasons. In fact, he wouldn't mind trying out a relationship with her, seeing how she is smart and has similar hobbies such as his (tabletop games - Warhammer 40k for example).
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Sure, Ander is lauded as smart, a born leader and physically impressive, an all-around ace, but he's only human. Anything supernatural can easily turn him in a greasy smear on the ground, and he knows it.
  • Platonic Co-Parenting: Sister Lucia and Sister Gloria at the orphanage in which Ander was raised. He started to call them his moms when he was a preteen and all the other children followed his lead.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Downplayed. Upon realizing how the humanities are a field in decline, he's extremely disappointed. He starts silently fuming after the school counselor tries getting him into any other STEM field simply because it pays much better than humanities would and is much more in demand. He holds it until Sophia raises the same point (other STEM fields being better payed) upon which he explodes into giving a Rousing Speech.
  • Renaissance Man: Ander. While trying to figure out what sort of world he stumbled upon he decided "to cover all bases". Beside his impressive repertoire of knowledge he's now possessing even before going to highschool, he now also possesses many other skills such as: fencing, forestry, marksmanship and so on.
  • Rousing Speech: Ander in the library, upon reaching his Rage Breaking Point described above beforehand, starts giving one to Sophia (and indirectly, everyone in the library). It is so impressive that Athena has to physically and mentally (quite literally) restrain herself from creating a child right then and there, giving her a huge headache. She ends up quite joyful shocking the goddess in front of her, stating that she is feeling bliss.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Upon discovering what world he was in along with meeting Poseidon, Ander decides to run fast and cut all connections going from New York straight to Window Rock, Arizona.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Athena shamelessly goes through high school records in order to learn what university her latest Chosen Conception Partner will attend, planning to enroll her human guise there and wait for the right opportunity to bear his child. When she learns Ander has suddenly vanished and her magic cannot find him, she's rather upset.
  • Stern Teacher: Mr. Wolf, the European History and fencing teacher.
  • True Sight: As a Clear-Eyed Mortal, Ander has this and is less than pleased due to all the baggage that comes with being one.
  • Un Reveal: At the end of the first episode, much to his dismay, Ander meets Percy Jackson and finally realizes where he is.
  • Worthy Opponent: Richard Robertson deems Ander his after failing to win in their first match as they participate in a fencing tournament, in spite of cheating with magic.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Ander in the first chapter was paranoid about bringing attention to himself, leading him to sabotage his opportunities to study at the Ivy League or practise fencing at the Olympics levels, but just as he was relaxing and considering he might give his academic prospects a chance, he stumbles upon Percy Jackson, leading him to realize he's Clear-eyed and will gain the supernatural's notice if he shows his brilliance off. Cue escape from New York City entirely.
