    Squirrels
A stubborn and proud species with extremely rigid gender roles, a strong attachment to traditions, and a ban on the use of magic. Based on feudal Japan. Males are called "bucks", while females are "does".
  • Ban on Magic: Out of respect for their Goddess of Life, Lady Terra, squirrels refuse to practice magic, or use any kind of magic-enhanced or enchanted objects at all in extreme cases.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: The cultural ideal for bucks, and only bucks, is the perfect warrior: fearless, loyal, and unafraid of death.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Enforced. Most squirrels feel that does are too precious to ever be allowed into harms way.

    Foxes
A society of bohemians obsessed with beauty and self-expression, foxes tend to produce writers, artists, musicians, actors, performers, and extroverts of all kinds. Males are "todds" and females are "vixens".
  • Motor Mouth: A species-wide quirk is that, when cornered, they all start talking really fast, presumably in an attempt to annoy their captor into letting them go.

    Badgers
A Perfect Pacifist People with a strict code against harming other sentient beings. Badgers are intellectuals, poets, and philosophers, priding themselves in developing their minds. Males are "boars" and females are "willows".
  • Loophole Abuse: They've foresworn taking up arms, so they fight barehanded using martial arts when they need to, and use ninjas instead of soldiers (ninjas being, originally, peasant militias using Improvised Weapons and their badassery being largely exaggerated).

    Rabbits
A mashup of ancient Greece and Rome, with the curiosity and scientific advancement of the former and the militaristic expansionism of the latter. Generally logical, straightforward, and blunt. Males are "jackrabbits" and females are "jillrabbits".
  • Ancient Grome: The interest in advancement of science and knowledge from ancient Greece, with the military bent of ancient Rome.
  • Nay-Theist: They regard the gods as parents. Nescessary for "childhood," but their ultimate end is to have their children survive without them. The rabbits don't have names for the gods, just calling them by their titles.

    Skunks
The skunk society is an entirely matriarchal agrarian society, producing most of the world's food supply. Females take on what are usually seen as "male" duties, and vice versa. They are unique in that they place the Goddess of Life much higher than the other two, a belief system that led to the founding of the Silver Order. Males are "florins" and females are "florises" (singular: "floris").

    Wolves
Wandering packs loosely based on Romani and nomadic tribes, the wolves are highly social and stress the importance of community. They are born explorers and have a fascination with astronomy: stars, planets, and other heavenly bodies, hence their names. Males are "brutes" and females are "fae" (singular and plural).
  • Noble Savage: Only wear clothes when they *have* to, preferring tatoos. Moreover, they prefer their own language to either sort of Standard, and some tribes are more lenient on crossbreeding than the other species. It's a rare wolf who prefers city life to tribal.

    Ferrets
A society in which almost everyone is a mage, run by a Magocracy and highly invested in the spiritual, mystical, and occult. Ferrets are very open-minded, but can also tend to be overly nervous or paranoid. Males are "hobferrets" and females are "jillferrets".

    Raccoons
The raccoons are a total mystery to everyone, having withdrawn almost entirely into themselves. Secrecy and mystery are the cornerstones of racoon life, to the point where they refuse to speak the names of two of their Gods to outsiders, and only reveal their true names as a sign of utmost trust and intimacy. Males are "clouds" and females are "mists".

    Wolfoxes
A crossbred species of half-wolves, half-foxes, not considered part of the primary eight. Since crossbreeding is considered one of the ultimate taboos in the series, wolfoxes are generally treated as second-class citizens at best. Wolfoxes tend to travel in groups for their own protection, since their numbers are so few and they're at such a risk for persecution. Much of their culture is based around music, dance, and the mental arts, with quite a few of them being gifted mages.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Their Death God is the personification of quiet and darkness, and modulates the blinding light of Time and the deafening noise of Life into beauty and music.

    Jackals
Also called the Titans, the jackals ruled the world in the distant past, long before the Species War. All the jackals save for Seker died out under mysterious circumstances during his imprisonment, and almost no trace of their culture remains. Jackal society is primarily based on ancient Egypt, but also has elements of lost civilizations such as the Incas, Mayans, and Aztecs.
  • Precursors: Before the Apocalypse, they were a mighty empire. 1500 years later, all that's left of them is one pyramid and a lich.
