    Tadayasu Souemon Sawaki

The main protagonist of the series. His middle name is usually omitted. Sawaki has the ability to see, touch and talk with all sorts of micro-organisms and bacteria, but he considers it more trouble than its worth.

  • A Friend in Need: A part of his character growth involves learning to allow himself to help out others in any way he can, despite his self-misgivings.
  • Blessed with Suck: Tadayasu Sawaki's ability to see microbes, but because for most of his life only a few people even believed that he could, it's caused him more trouble than he thinks it's worth.
    • Cursed with Awesome: But eventually, he accepts that he has this ability and that people are willing to make use of it, and the microbes accept him in turn. His newfound confidence to be useful also allows him to temporarily let others see microbes like he can.
  • Brought Down to Normal: A few times in his life, he loses the ability to see microbes if he becomes absolutely startled. Losing it during his time in university makes him question his worth to people.
  • Only Sane Man: Whenever he's a part of one of Misato and Kawahama's money schemes.
  • Parrot Pet Position: After opening a care package from his grandfather, an A. oryzae from his household is always perched on his shoulder.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Often has to remind people that Kei is still a guy and also his best friend underneath her dressings.
  • Speaks Fluent Germ: Can fully converse with and listen to any microbe within earshot, which isn't something he enjoys because they can be very chatty.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Although the story mostly follows Sawaki's journey, much of the focus is shared later on with all of the main cast, including Kei. Sawaki himself laments that he's always getting dragged into other people's situations.
  • Weirdness Magnet: A lot of things have happened to him in just his first year, and seeing microbes constantly doesn't help.

     Kei Yuuki

Sawaki's childhood friend and the son of a sake brewer. He takes a leave of absence in the beginning of the story but soon comes back cross-dressed in gothic lolita fashion.

  • Childhood Friend Romance: He has a crush on her childhood friend Sawaki.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Had applied for an international driver's license just in case it was needed after Hasegawa's France rescue. Comes in handy when he follows Sawaki to America to bring him back in time for the sake brew.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Outside of his extensive knowledge of sake, Kei is mostly clueless on other types of alcoholic fermentations, requiring a second opinion on drinks like craft beer.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A goth lolita who happens to be Sawaki’s best friend.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Primarily his only form of attire aside from male clothes.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: When Kei overhears that Sawaki had spent time in France with Marie (who was essentially Kei's doppelganger in all white), he unconsciously smacks him in the back of his head. Kei does not understand why that happened.
  • Intimate Healing: Offered to heal Sawaki of his strep throat the same way he healed Nishino: By mouth.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: The author occasionally refers to Kei as a "man among men" because of his situation.
  • Only Friend: Kei considers Sawaki the only friend he's ever made and has stayed with him most of their lives, which is why he cherishes their friendship so much.
  • Perky Goth: If only in appearance.
  • Serious Business: Sake. Due to being the heir to a family brewery, it's normal. That said, absolutely nothing will get between Kei and the opportunity to make sake. Nothing.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Kei denies that he and Sawaki are anything but best friends, despite a lot of evidence to the contrary. Oddly enough, his reasoning always stems from the fact that they are both still men.
  • Shrinking Violet: Kei considering herself as this is the catalyst of his decision to crossdress as a lolita upon entering college. By doing something so far removed from what Kei would be usually do in order to find a place for the new him.

     Professor Itsuki

A prominent professor at the university and a mysterious old man with a passion for fermentation of all kinds. As a friend of Sawaki's grandfather, he knows of Sawaki's ability.

  • Cool Old Guy: As long as his students show passion for their interests and in the field of fermentation, he will do whatever it would take to nurture it, this involves taking care of expenses of constructing equipment or even repairing damages.
  • Disappointed in You: Itsuki is rarely down in spirits, but if his students forget their respect for the field or take something very important from him, even by accident, his disappointment is enough for them to grovel for forgiveness.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His utter casualness while processing and eating kiviak right in front of his students tells you all about him.
  • Foreign Queasine: Itsuki-sensei has a fondness for bizarre fermented foods from around the world.
  • For Science!: Goes to great lengths in the pursuit of agricultural science and to teach about proper methods of fermentation and to show the potential for the use of microbes as a true powerhouse. The author's note sometimes calls him a mad scientist as a result.
  • No Mouth: Rarely do you see a mouth moving under that mustache, the only time you can is when he shaved his hair entirely and got rid of his wrinkles. Oikawa and Mutou were so startled that they markered his wrinkles and whiskers back on.
  • Touched by Vorlons: By the end of the series, Sawaki allows Itsuki to see and interact the microbes the way he could for a short moment, and the experience moves him to tears.
  • Wallof Text: Itsuki-sensei is prone to delivering these in increasingly small font-sizes. Sometimes everyone else gets squished between the speech bubbles.

     Haruka Hasegawa

Postgraduate student and Itsuki's assistant. A short-tempered, no-nonsense and somewhat sadistic woman from a wealthy, over-protective family.

  • Agent Scully: Initially was like this concerning Sawaki's powers until he points out the microbes on her boots causing athlete's foot.
  • Blue Blood: Not as much as other examples, but she's lived an affluent life enough to have never encountered a space heater or even instant ramen.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: She's well aware she isn't a good drunk, which is why she usually abstains from drinking.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Was initially very cold and short-tempered to Sawaki, Misato, and Kawahama at the early parts of the manga, but begins to mellow out after seeing how strong the bonds around her were.
  • The Ojou: The daughter of a wealthy family, subverted in that for the most part she doesn't actively try to use her connections.
  • Runaway Fiancé: Is trying to postpone her Arranged Marriage as long as possible by staying at the University through Loophole Abuse of an agreement with her father.
  • The Snark Knight: Hasegawa is committed to science; bad science or You Fail Logic Forever in her presence will trigger a rant.
  • Stripperific: Hasegawa's usual attire involves all somewhat revealing leather, sometimes with spikes.
  • Tsundere: Towards people in general, but mainly towards Misato.
  • Whip of Dominance: She's a moody and stern Ice Queen with a sadistic streak and often uses a whip to "punish" people who annoy her, particularly Misato and Kawahama.
