    Lucian
First appearance: Prologue, "He Who Kneels"
The God of Strife and mentor to Thomas.

  • The Ageless: Because he's a god. Lucian is over thousands of years old, but looks like he's in his early twenties. He is this until chapter 22, when he looses his immortality.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Thomas and Rowen both consider Lucian their older brother, and he returns this feeling.
  • Hearing Voices: Lucian can hear voices, which we later find out are Dimitri being inside his head while he 'waits in the wings.'
  • Mortality Ensues: Lucian gives up his godhood to Chris for their plan to work.
Thomas’s mouth fell open in silence as the realization finally came to him. If this was before, everything would have been effortless: the running, the climbing, the leaping. Something as simple as a healing stab wound or a sprained ankle would have felt like nothing at all. But that was before. And this was now.“Lucian,” Thomas froze, whispering, “you’re mortal?".
  • My Greatest Failure: When Thomas stabbed Lucian with the dagger, Lucian realizes that Thomas never forgave him over Rowen's death, and calls the dagger his 'biggest mistake'.
  • Really 700 Years Old: His exact age is unknown, but he's stated that he's hundreds, possibly thousands of years old.

    Thomas
First appearance: Chapter 1, "Feather to the Air"
The boy plagued by voices, Thomas is the son of Christopher, older brother of Rowen, and the king.

  • Ax-Crazy: When he's been possesed in chapters 17-18, he tries to kill both Lucian and Chris.
  • Babies Ever After: With Eloise in the epilogue.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: At the end of chapter 16, Thomas becomes possessed by Dimitri, and stays possessed until chapter 18.
  • Hearing Voices: Alike to Lucian, Thomas hears the voices aswell, which is why Chris asks Lucian to mentor him.
  • Happily Married: During the epilogue, it's revealed that he and Eloise got married, and have a son.
  • It's All My Fault: After Dimitri possesses him and he stabs Lucian with the dagger, Thomas breaks down in grief over Rowen's death, saying that all of them were to blame for it.
  • Kick the Dog: In Chapter 12, he gives Lucian a brutal "The Reason You Suck" Speech blaming him for everything that's gone wrong and claims that Lucian is to blame for Rowen's death
  • Parental Abandonment: In the events of chapter 5, we find out that Christopher has abandoned Thomas and Rowen, something that they both hold against him in later scenes.
  • Writer's Block: In chapter 2, we find out that everything has been coming hard to him, and he has an inability to write/play music.

    Rowen
First appearance: Chapter 1, "Feather to the Air"
The princess with a heart of gold and spunky attitude, Rowen is the younger sister of Thomas with a hero-worship for Lucian.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Confirmed to be a lesbian. Her and Faye have a very queer-coded relationship, Rowen even thinks in chapter 7 that they’d get along further than only being friends.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Her first meeting with Faye in chapter 4 is implied to have been this.
  • Big Brother Worship: From the start, she adores Lucian, her surrogate brother, and refers to him as her big brother in her last moments.
  • Child Soldiers: In the book, Rowen is 15 during the war.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her need to prove herself, Lucian calls her out on this in chapter 4.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She dies in Thomas's arms, with Lucian and Chris there aswell. Rowen thanks them before she dies, thinking that there is 'warmth even in darkness'
  • Hope Bringer: To Lucian and Thomas. Rowen's character is the representation of hope and future.
  • Parental Abandonment: In the events of chapter 5, we find out that Christopher has abandoned Thomas and Rowen, something that they both hold against him in later scenes.

    Christopher/Angel of Death
First appearance: Prologue, "He Who Kneels"
Lucian's old friend, the Angel of Death and father to Thomas & Rowen.

  • The Ageless: Because he's a god. Chris is over thousands of years old, but looks like he's in his early thirties.
  • The Atoner: Is set on making on things right in the later chapters.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Thomas refers to him as "Chris" a few times during the middle chapters, though he does call him "Father" in the early chapters, and refers to him as "Father" and even "Dad" after his internal conflict with him is resolved.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He sacrifices himself to stay in the void and watch over Dimitri so no one else needs to suffer.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After seeing Thomas's treatment of him and Rowen's death, Chris is wracked with guilt over leaving them, making his initial choice in the end more upsetting.
  • Parental Neglect: During the early chapters, we see that Thomas and Chris have a very distant relationship, but Chris's parental neglect furthers when he leaves and abandons Thomas and Rowen after Yvette's death.

He Who Overlooks, the God of Retribution and the man capable of rewriting realms.
  • Holier Than Thou: From his first appearance, Dimitri makes it clear that he is more-powerful than them all, being convinced in his superiority as a god.
  • Hope Crusher: Dimitri utilizes this during chapter 16, when he reveals to Chris, Thomas, and Lucian, that He is unable to revive anyone, and that Rowen is gone for good.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Dimitri is rarely phased by anything they try against him, all until Christopher is given Lucian's godhood and is able to defeat him and make him bleed, to which Dimitri immediately becomes afraid of.
  • I Have Many Names: When asked about everything, he lists out all the titles he's been given.
  • It Amused Me: Dimitri's reason for giving Thomas and Lucian voices. In his own words, it was too boring, and his way of 'having fun' while he waited in the wings.
  • Jerkass: Dimitri is frequently shown to be a sadistic, callous, self-serving, arrogant Control Freak.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Dimitri was able to acomplish this at the end of chapter 18, proving his power by sending them into dreamscapes and beginning to alter their reality.
  • The Voice: He was this to Lucian and Thomas.

    Colsen/The War God
First appearance: Chapter 8, "Lose Sight of It"
The bitter man seeking revenge, Colsen is the War God.
  • Blood Knight: Being the War God, he enjoys fighting and often looks for ways to find himself in one.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: For a bloodthirsty warrior, deep down (and quite ironically), Colsen is quite sentimental. His previous friendships with both Nicolas and Dimitri mean a lot to him, and even after leaving, Colsen still wanted to protect Nicolas.
  • Defiant to the End: He intends to avenge his lover, and even in his last moments, he throws the dagger at Rowen.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is immensely hot-headed and stubborn, notably less than he is in Exuent.

  • Heroic Sacrifice: What her going to the mountain was meant to be, although she ran into Faye when she stopped to protect her, and Faye took on this instead
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: She may talk tough and keep up a snarky exterior, but most of Eloise's Emotionless Girl persona is really just a front, we see more of her true personality further into the book.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Believes that she doesn't deserve the love of someone like Thomas.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Courtesy of Faye in chapter 9, who prevents her from going to the mountain and takes her place instead.
  • Sweet Baker: She owns the bakery besides the sea, and although she doesn't come off it as first, we see her more empathetically later in the book.
