- Childhood Friends: The four have been close friends since childhood.
- Gender-Equal Ensemble: The group is composed of two boys (Keitaro and Kihiro) and two girls (Tamaki and Sakiko).
Keitaro Maebara
Keitaro Maebara
The son of Keiichi. They lived in Tokyo due to Keiichi's job as a congressman's secretary and would make yearly visits to Hinamizawa. Keitaro's since moved to the village 3 weeks ago in June 2019 to live with his mother and grandparents, and attends the Okinomiya middle school as a second-year.
- All-Loving Hero: Keiichi taught Keitaro that "harmony among people is most important". Keitaro puts it into practice by wanting to befriend everyone.
- City Mouse: Like his father, he moved from Tokyo to the rural town Hinamizawa. Although, Keiichi brought Keitaro to visit Hinamizawa a lot before moving so he considers himself a Hinamizawan at heart.
- Determinator: When he decides to make friends with someone, nothing can stop him from keep trying.
- Family Theme Naming: He's named Keitaro and his father is Keiichi.
- The Gadfly: He loves teasing Kihiro by telling playful lies as he knows how much Kihiro hates lies.
- Love at First Sight: He feels attracted to Inori from the moment he first sees her.
- Nice Guy: He inherited his father's friendly and sociable personality.
- Secretly Selfish: He says he wants to become a bridge between the locals of Hinamizawa and the reclusive people of the Polaris Society, but his true biggest motivation for trying to socialize with the people of Polaris is getting closer to Inori, who he has a crush on.
- Strong Family Resemblance: He closely resembles his father Keiichi.
- Wide-Eyed Idealist: He believes he can make friends with everyone, even though the people of Polaris are basically a cult that rejects all communication with people outside their circle and almost everyone in Hinamizawa would want them out of the village.
Kihiro Ryuugu
Kihiro Ryuugu
The son of Rena and her ex-husband. Kihiro grew up with Keitaro as his best friend and now attends the Okinomiya middle school with his friends.
- Best Friend: Keitaro considers Kihiro to be his best friend and the feeling is mutual.
- Character Catchphrase: He repeatedly yells "Liar/You're lying!" when one of his friends (usually Keitaro) tells a lie to tease him.
- In the Blood: His personality is a lot like his mother Rena, even sharing her quirks such as her love for cute things and hatred for lies.
- Generation Xerox: Kihiro moved out of Hinamizawa when Rena got married, but moved back to the village after his parents got a divorce. His mother went through the same when her mother divorced her father.
- Mistaken for Gay: Kihiro is so fond of Keitaro that Kururu asks him if he's in love with him, but Kihiro explains he only cares about Keitaro in a Heterosexual Life-Partners sort of way because he has never felt romantically or sexually attracted to anyone.
- Momma's Boy: He's very close to his mother.
- Tears of Remorse: In Irotoutoshi-hen, Kihiro remembers having been unable to save Keitaro from the L5 people of Polaris in Oniokoshi-hen, causing him to break down in tears.
Tamaki Sonozaki
Tamaki Sonozaki
The daughter of Mion. Her grandmother Akane is the current head of the Sonozaki family, with Tamaki being the one to become the successor after Mion. Tamaki attends the Okinomiya middle school with her friends.
- Beware the Nice Ones: She's a sweet and cheerful girl, but she's still a Sonozaki so you can expect her to be scary when she's angry.
- Curtains Match the Window: Like her mother, Tamaki's hair and eyes are both green.
- Groin Attack: She squeezes Keitaro's balls until she almost crushes them because Sakiko told her grabbing a man's balls is the fastest way to grab his heart, not realizing she was trolling her.
- Hereditary Hairstyle: She has the same ponytail hairstyle as her mother at her age.
- Hime Cut: She has parted blunt bangs, chin length sidelocks, and long straight hair worn in a ponytail. Her hairstyle reflects her position as the current heiress of the Sonozaki household, one of the Three Great Families of Hinamizawa.
- Playful Cat Smile: Her default expression is a cat-like smile, showing her perky personality.
- Strong Family Resemblance: She looks very similar to her mother Mion.
- Tomboyish Ponytail: Like her mother at her age, Tamaki ties her hair back into a ponytail and is as much of an outgoing tomboy as her mother was.
Sakiko Kimiyoshi
Sakiko Kimiyoshi
The daughter of Satoko. Her mother owns a souvenir shop, where Sakiko works at sometimes. She's in her third year of middle school while all her friends are in their second year, being a year older than everyone in the new generation.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: According to Keitaro, Sakiko plays the part of a polite and charming lady when working at her mother's shop, but her true personality is vulgar and rude, even badmouthing the clients behind their backs.
- Noblewoman's Laugh: She does the "Ohohoho!" arrogant laugh that her mother did when young.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: At the end of Hoshiwatashi-hen, Sakiko leads an angry mob to slaughter the Polaris Society after she thinks she finds evidence that they murdered her father, even killing Keitaro when he defends the people of Polaris.
Polaris Family Society
Inori Mikazuki
Inori Mikazuki
A beautiful girl with a mysterious aura who goes to the same school as Keitaro and the others. She recently moved to Hinamizawa with her mother to join the Polaris Society. Despite her fear of interacting with people, Keitaro takes an interest in her and wants to befriend her.
- Broken Bird: The abuse of her father resulted in Inori following Polaris' teachings to avoid any kind of interaction with people outside their circle.
- Shrinking Violet: Whenever someone who isn't a Polaris member approaches her, she becomes unable to speak and withdraws in fear.
Kururu Isshiki
Kururu Isshiki
A girl who is a member of the Polaris Society, like Inori. Unlike other Polaris members, Kururu is very chatty around outsiders, making Keitaro find her more approachable.
- Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Her midriff is exposed in both her school uniform and casual wear. She even calls this her charm point.
- The Gadfly: She enjoys teasing Keitaro by calling him a pervert and similar things.
- Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair into pigtails, representing her outgoing and somewhat childish attitude.
- The Mole: She claims that she isn't a follower of the Polaris faith and acts friendly with Keitaro, but her real motive for joining his group is spying on them because her father is the main political representative of Polaris.
- Stepford Smiler: She was abused by her mother when she was younger. After she and her father joined Polaris, she took on a cheerful and teasing persona to try and leave her traumatic childhood behind.
