Misused: Evil Is Petty

Go To

To-do list:

  • It was decided to define Evil Is Petty as major villains doing minor acts of wrongdoing.
    • Make adjustments to the description if necessary, and adjust the list of subtropes to only include actual subtropes.
    • Clean up on-page examples.
    • Clean up wicks.

    Original post
Evil Is Petty, going by the description, is supposed to be a villain who both kicks the dog and pokes the poodle; in other words, a villain who mixes large-scale atrocities with small-scale petty cruelty. However, a good chunk of the wicks describe villains with petty motives, which is instead Disproportionate Retribution. Assuming the concept is sufficiently tropeworthy, a rename will almost certainly be needed to get better across the actual definition. A concern has also been raised that it may be redundant with Kick the Dog.

Wicks Checked: 88/88 (thanks so much to WarJay and Ferot for their help).

  • 16/88 (18%) Correct Use (several have issue of failing to explain their major evildoing in the example)
  • 47/88 (53%) Misuse as Petty Motives
  • 18/88 (21%) Unsure/Other Misuse
  • 7/88 (8%) ZCE

A vast majority of examples, over 80%, are misused or problematic. The issue seems to be that "Petty" is being interpreted as cruelty rather than trivial actions as intended. Possible fixes:

  • Rename to better fit intended definition (possibilities: "Major Villain, Minor Evildoing").
  • Require all examples explain the major evildoing they do in addition to the small ones the trope is about.
  • Decide on how we define evildoings as petty/minor to distinguish it from Kick the Dog, which can be evils too major to count. (I'd say disqualify anything that could be Moral Event Horizon worthy.)
  • Consider disambiguating Evil Is Petty, the rename becoming a separate trope.

Correct Use: Evil on Both Large and Small Scale (16/88)
  1. Characters.Fallout 3: (Dr. Stainslaus Braun) The first thing he asks the player to do? Make a little boy cry. Then he has the player break up a married couple. Partial Context Example as it describes his petty evil, but not his larger scale human experimentation and mass murder.
  2. Funny.Destiny 2: One of Nezarec's dialogues that you can get while doing missions? Him pulling the classic Look Behind You trick and then chuckling about it. You read that right; the "God of Pain" takes the time to effectively prank you. And yes, a lot of players end up falling for it.
Nezarec: Do not look behind you. [Laughs darkly]
  3. Characters.Senran Kagura Nintendo 3 DS: (Dogen) In addition to all his genuine atrocities, he also one made an internet bot to sexually harass people.
  4. Webcomic.Loveand Capes: When Evil Brain possesses a jogger, the first thing he does is insult Joggers, before ordering a "Cheesy Onion Bacon Loaf." Keep in mind that this is his first appearance in the comic, and he has previously been built up to Doctor Doom levels of supervillainy. The mention of serious supervillainy seems to make this example keep
Future!Evil Brain: I really hate joggers.
  5. Characters.Undertale Flowey: It really doesn't help his plans any to mock and insult you constantly. He's just kind of a dick like that. Again, mass murder unmentioned, but fits.
  6. Characters.Batman The Joker: Joker truly sees no difference between throwing cream pies, robbing a museum, and wanton mass-murder. To him, it's all just part of the joke.
  7. Characters. The Legend Of Zelda Majoras Mask: (Majora) While Majora's ultimate goal is Termina's destruction, that doesn't stop it from having Skull Kid commit smaller and more petty acts of evil, such as turning Link into a Deku Scrub, turning Kafei into a child days before his wedding, attacking Koume in Woodfall Swamp, shattering the Great Fairy into fragments, and cursing each of Termina's four regions. Unlike most examples, however, this only serves to make Majora all the more terrifying, as it seems completely indiscriminate in its evil acts. Whether it's turning people into strange things, ruining someone's life, or committing horrendous acts of mass slaughter, it's all part of the same sick game.
  8. Monster. The Elder Scrolls: On a smaller scale, Molag Bal is petty enough to corrupt a good and righteous man into breaking his oath of pacifism by sending a servant to defile his wife's grave, and dominates the defenseless priest of his rival Boethiah by having the old man beaten to death and revived to repeat the process until he swears fealty.
  9. NeverLiveItDown.Video Games: Mass Effect:
    • Kai Leng has yet to live down eating Captain Anderson's cereal. He is an assassin, and has done many far worse and important things, yet this is what he's most known for.
  10. RealityWarper.Web Original: Monster Factory has several reality benders, usually thanks to cheats that allow the McElroy brothers to give their video game characters god-like powers. The most powerful of these characters is the Final Pam, who can summon millions of bombs out of thin air or turn her husband into a giant battle mech. Her abilities even allow her to instantly kill everybody on screen, and then steal their clothes.
  11. TheLordOfTheRings.Tropes D To F: Evil Overlord:
  12. PlayingWith.Token Good Teammate: Parodied:
  13. Characters. The Road To El Dorado: Tzekel-Kan is such a Sadist that something as small as Tulio and Miguel having a slapping contest is enough to make him grin immensely and drop his guard completely. Major evildoings only mentioned elsewhere, but he fits.
  14. Sinister is this in spades. He is absolutely petty and childish during Quiet Council meetings, distracting from important discussions with his one-sided rivalry with Exodus that began with "he's trying to out-fashion me." His fashion obsession even extends to the Hellions' mission in Arakko, where he randomly bothers passers-by about his lack of cape which could very easily break the team's cover. When he is being interrogated by Arcade, he still acts like a childish idiot, at least until the torture gets bad. He also likes to take jabs at the team and revel in their misery, sometimes to their faces.
Sinister: (to Kwannon) Have I told you how pretty you are when you're loyal? Major evildoings only mentioned elsewhere, but he fits.
  15. Fanfic.Dead On Arrival MHA: Overhaul steals a chair from a news station because he could and he felt like being petty in that moment. Major evildoings only mentioned elsewhere, but he fits.
  16. ComicBook.Green Lantern Godhead: The Black Hand summons and plays with the corpse of Hal's father just to piss him off. Omnicidal Maniac which qualifies this not stated.

Petty Motives/Fits Disproportionate Retribution Better (47/88)
  1. Characters.Sword Art Online Abridged Season One Characters: (Akihiko Kayaba)
    • Pay Evil unto Evil as it might've been, his murder of a guy for mildly sassing him proves he's not the Only Sane Man he claims to be.
    • After his motive it's revealed, him accepting Kirito's Duel to the Death comes off as this in retrospect, as he only accepted it because Kirito annoyed him.
  2. Fanfic. The Rise Of Darth Vulcan: Ted's a very petty individual. Everything he's done so far is more or less him lashing out over being humiliated at a party. Heck, it's the reason he's even in Equestria in the first place, since the Amulet was simply granting his wish to be sent to Equestria so he could wreck it.
  3. Recap.NYPD Blue S 3 E 3: Angela Biaggi wants Paul killed just because he makes her "physically ill."
  4. VideoGame. The Bouncer: Daurugon was refused to bring his sister into a hospital for her illness because the only active doctor at the time was on a house call, with no implied malice or spite behind the action. Mind you, this was when he was still a child at minimum, so a good number of years prior. Guess what the first target of Daurugon's Kill Sat is to highlight how truly evil he was all along?
  5. Recap. The Simpsons S 7 E 22: Burns is willing to kill Grandpa Simpson, his commanding officer over paintings they hid away during the war. Yeah, priceless paintings, but he is plenty rich. He then tries to kill Bart for insulting him after he took away the paintings at gunpoint.
  6. NightmareFuel.Invader Zim Oni: If Zim ever managed to keep himself on target long enough for a plan bigger than just thumbing his nose at his nemesis, humanity wouldn't stand a chance.
  7. Literature.Skylark Series: Faux Affably Evil: As badass and intelligent as DuQuesne is, and even though he is willing to enter an Enemy Mine situation when he needs it, it doesn't change the fact that his goal is to kill Seaton in order to have a monopoly on metal X. He eventually gives up on that goal simply because the knowledge spreads so widely that monopoly becomes impossible.
  8. Characters.Art The Clown: He kills people for no reason, but is just as brutal to those who mistreat him in the slightest sense, which is usually justified because he acts likes an asshole.
  9. Film.Once Upon A Time In Mexico: Marin's character thinks he's smart: he explains to Sands that he intentionally low-balled his fee, since no-one would ever kill somebody over such a trifling amount. We'll never know if Marin was right, as Sands kills him anyway in a fit of pique, then pockets his cash and cocaine. And kills the completely-innocent waitress who accidentally spilled a glass of water. And the chef because he made the dish Sands ordered too well. Dick.
  10. DarthWiki.Marked: Lyle allows Lewis to see him despite the other ghosts being unable to purely so he can gloat at him.
  11. Characters.Dinosaur King:
    • In the DS game, after completing the main story they attack Zoe and steal her personal things to spite the D-Team for thwarting their plans in Antarctica.
    • In the Ancient China arc she summons her Mapusaurus at a group of woodcutters just because they disturbed her sleep (they didn’t even know she was sleeping on a tree).
  12. Princess Fantasy DX 2: Grimhilde hates Snow White for being more attractive than her. Gaston wants to hurt Belle for refusing to marry him. Maleficent cursed Aurora as a baby just for not being invited to her christening. In Maleficent's case, her pettiness is the whole reason queen Mab banned her from the Unseelie Court.
  13. Characters.Xenoblade Chronicles 1: (Mumkhar) His motives for going along with Egil's scheme calling for the mass extinction of the life on Bionis boils down to getting a one up over Dunban. Not to mention that he leaves himself plenty of free time to mock the loved ones of those he skewered.
Dunban: Why did you betray us to the Mechonis? Why did you kill our friends at the colony? Why?!
Mumkhar: You wanna know? Because it's your home!
    Dunban: You piece of-
  14. Manga.Fairy Girls: The bombers in the fourth volume explained they're tried to kill Prin and Lane...simply because they feel they stopped noticing them. Even Ezra tells them there's a limit to how entitled a fan can get.
  15. Characters.Octopath Traveler Antagonists: (Helgenish) The main reason why he is such a loathsome scumbag is because he flies into rages and inflicts Disproportionate Retribution on the women under his "care" for the most trivial of offenses. He once slaps Primrose across the face for not expressing immediate gratitude that he would "teach a completely useless girl everything she knows" (his words). Things go From Bad to Worse when Yusufa covers for Primrose when she leaves to pursue Rufus of the Crows; he beats Yusufa severely, catches up to Primrose, and stabs her in front of Primrose. It's very obvious that this man is sick in the head!
  16. NightmareFuel.Dr No: Dr. No torched an entire bird sanctuary and its staff brutally murdered just because it was a bit too close to his base. Later on, several characters remark on how one of the most extensive and sinister criminal conspiracies in the West only started unravelling because a few people from a bird-watching society went missing.
  17. Characters.American Psycho: (Patrick Bateman) Almost all of his murders are motivated by people having nicer clothes or better apartments than he does.
  18. Recap.Meat Fuzzy Lumpkins Crime 101: Fuzzy wreaks havoc across Townsville because he lost a jam contest.
  19. Film.Elf: The Central Park Rangers are fully aware of Santa's existence and hold a grudge against him for putting them on the naughty list. And the reason why is this: they are infamous for their controversial and brutal tactics of controlling park crowds, especially with a Simon and Garfunkel concert held at Central Park in 1985.
  20. HateSink.Anime And Manga: Rent-A-Girlfriend has one in the form of Mami Nanami, Kazuya's ex-girlfriend. To put it nicely, in-universe and out, nobody likes her. Not only does she come off as a blatant manipulator who toys with people's feelings, such as how she abruptly broke up with Kazuya after just a month and told him to his face that it's because she met someone she likes more, which is later revealed to be a lie, but fans are further put off by how cruelly she treats him, viciously insulting him and deriding him as a pervert in front of Chizuru, which her and Kazuya's friends find very uncomfortable despite their own tendency to rib on him, and even going as far to demand Kazuya apologizes on her behalf when Chizuru defends him and calls her out on it. Fans are also extremely put off for her motives for trying to break Kazuya and Chizuru up, which isn't because she still likes Kazuya and wants to get back with him like most instances of this, but out of spite over the fact that Kazuya apparently found another girlfriend so soon after she dumped him.
  21. Series.I Zombie:
    • The Asshole Victim in "Virtual Reality Bites", forced a couple's Donut shop to go out of business and drove a woman to suicide by exposing her private information online. Why? Because the couple gave him donuts he was allergic to, and the woman kept him on hold at the call center.
    • Vaughn Du Clark engineers the police shooting of someone in another country who left a negative review of Max Rager online.
  22. Characters.V For Vendetta Film: (Adam Sutler) As is the case with any dictator, his governmental policies are the result of his own beliefs and personal wants. He offhandedly abuses his power to put the 1812 Overture (the music V played while destroying the Old Bailey) on the blacklist, simply because "[He] never wants to hear it again." He later has Gordon murdered for making fun of him.
  23. My Superhero City I Feel The Rage And I Just Cant Hold It: Do Not Adjust Your Set: Saint captures Leon, who seems to still think he's dealing with a paragon. On live television, Saint asks Leon his motives. And Leon... has a grudge. And just wants to hurt Saint. And promises to continue doing it. Saint believes him. And acts. And one Neck Snap later, Leon is not his problem anymore.
  24. Monster.DC Series: "The People vs. Lois Lane" & "Dead Lois Walking": Professor Jefferson Cole is a narcissistic, brilliant mind expelled from S.T.A.R. laboratories after he attempted to sell weapons technology to those who would misuse it. Breaking out of jail years later and possessed of a vendetta toward the people who locked him away, especially Lois Lane, Cole frames Lois for murder by rigging a gun to go off in her hands and kill his own henchmen, later using his illusory technology to further discredit Lois until she's sentenced to death. Cole murders one of his own minions who tries to clear Lois's name in remorse and reveals his trump card is to rain down hybrid-Kryptonite on Metropolis to horribly kill its entire populace, all out of petty spite for the city having "shunned his genius".
  25. ComicBook.Born Again: After being told that Matt Murdock is secretly Daredevil, whose actions have barely impacted the profit of his previous crimes, and even though he is unsure of this information, The Kingpin dives headfirst into this, going above and beyond to ruin Murdock's life to confirm it, and sacrificing his calmness and methodical approach (the factors that made him such an intimidating and effective villain in the first place) for his vendetta against Daredevil.
  26. Triptych Continuum Triptych: It doesn't come much pettier than Coordinator. He was the primary factor that soured Twilight on the very concept of friendship back during their school days because she spurned him, carefully arranging rumors which would drift into her ears concerning any ponies who might attempt to befriend her and actively using Blackmail on any who kept right on trying anyway, usually with evidence he'd created.
  27. Motive Rant: In Blood Oath, the first book in the President's Vampire series, Konrad gives an epic one when asked why he's provided Islamic Jihadists with Unmenschensoldaten to help destroy America.
Konrad: Why? Oh, it shouldn't be that hard for you to figure out. Revenge. Not just against Cade. This whole arrogant, adolescent country. The one that destroyed my home twice in the last century. That put a military base on the ruins of my family's castle. I want to see someone inflict the same pain on America that they brought to the Reich. I want to see their dream turn to a nightmare, like mine. I want them to wake up screaming. [Helen shakes her head, and Konrad realises she means why he's betrayed and paralyzed her]. Oh, you mean why did I do this to you? That's actually much simpler: I don't like you, Helen
  28. Characters.Mega Man Battle Network 4 Red Sun And Blue Moon: Some of his evil plans involve getting revenge on people who have (from his perspective) wronged him, such as kidnapping Dex to make a huge pot of curry so he can drown Jawaii Island because he used to work for their tourism office but got fired.
  29. VideoGame.Half Minute Hero: More than a few of the evil lords have extremely trivial reasons for attempting to destroy the world, which the Time Goddess will often lampshade.
  30. Characters.Full Metal Daemon Muramasa Tsurugi And Cruxes: Apparently the reason he attacks Muramasa is because he wants to lay claim to the title of "demon".
Muramasa: "...We all have our dreams, I suppose, but this is the first time anyone has ever envied me for that. If you want it, take it—is what I'd like to say, but not if it means losing to the likes of you!"
  31. Characters. The Exorcist: His defining trait. Once someone crosses him in anyway, he will do anything to take revenge. Merrin exorcises him? Gotta kill him. Karras exorcises him? Have a serial killer pull a Grand Theft Me on him. Anyone who, no matter how indirectly, helped Karras to exorcise him from Regan? They gotta die.
  32. Characters.Deus Ex Human Revolution: He's rather pissed and bitter his own invention can't do a thing for him, so he hijacks the Illuminati's plans and tweaks them so he can make sure the whole world gets to know just how much he's come to hate his own creation.
  33. Characters.Criminal Minds Unsubs Seasons Six To Seven: Ruined Don Sanderson's life out of simple jealousy.
  34. Characters. The Super Mario Bros Movie: (Foreman Spike) He's not genuinely evil, simply by writing a negative review on the Mario Bros.' website out of spite, but his reason for doing so has nothing to do with the service but because Mario and Luigi "deserted" his business. Also, right before Mario battles Bowser in New York, he was going to beat him up for scratching his truck when he didn't even touch it.
  35. Scream (2022) has Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman. Much like the villains of the previous film, they have incredibly shallow reasons for their murder spree. That said, their goal is somehow even pettier, since they seek to recreate the plot of the first film just so that they can inspire the creation of a Stab film that's closer to the first few ones, due to them hating the direction Stab 8 took. Additionally, in a major departure from most other Ghostfaces, where their was a clear hierarchy with a main killer commanding over the accomplice, and some of these alliances fracturing via backstabbing, Richie and Amber genuinely like each other and hold equal power.
  36. Lycoris Recoil: Robota is a really nasty character who wants Walnut to die just so he can become the number one hacker in Tokyo. Even his flunkies consider him a Jerkass, and their leader decides to warn Chisato about Robota's surveillance drone after she spares him (not that it really helps in the end). His pettiness is ultimately what drives him going forward to work with Majima.
  37. Characters.First Encounter Assault Recon Main Antagonists: Disproportionate Retribution: She horrifically killed Jankowski just for mildly criticizing the Point Man. Don't mess with her kids.
  38. Pantheon.Luckiness: Repulsed by Herbert Garrison for his solution to "f**k all the immigrants to death", saying "I grew up in the turn of the century and even I find that stupidly offense. How were you even elected?!" He's further repulsed by him nuking Canada over basically a need to prove his manhood, stating "I wouldn't never authorized the Manhattan Project if it could lead to you". Luthor, Senator Armstrong and the Enclave are all unpleasant fate for America to him.
  39. LackOfEmpathy.Anime And Manga: Griffith from Berserk upon becoming a Godhand. His very first action as Femto says it all, as he viciously rapes his former executive officer Casca in front of her love and his former comrade Guts just to spite and hurt him while smirking at him the entire time. The evidence just gets more damning after he is reincarnated into the physical world as a human, where he goes to the Hill of Swords, a memorial to the Band of the Hawk whom he sold out during the Eclipse in order to become a Godhand just so he could find out if he could still feel anything about all that he did to his former friends and comrades. Turns out he doesn't. And says it with such a straight and rational face that it's scary.
  40. YMMV.Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F: Jerkass Woobie: All of Frieza's army can count. It's not difficult to pity them considering all they go through throughout the movie. They are all Punch Clock Villains forced to work for one of the universe's worst tyrants who can and will kill them for even the most minuscule slight or if he just feels like it. note  In fact, their decision to revive Frieza wasn't out of loyalty, but out of sheer desperation to save the crumbling empire, a fact that Frieza is fully aware of and even seems to relish. Later, when his army is defeated by the Z Fighters, Frieza kills them all out of sheer disgust. Not even loyal Sorbet is spared as he ends up killed by a stray energy blast from Frieza when it's deflected by Vegeta.
  41. Characters.Halo UNSCA Is: One of the biggest examples imaginable. She destroyed a planet and killed 12 billion people all for the sake of spiting one guy. His crime? Not bowing to her. Note that said guy didn't even live on the planet or have any say in its government, he just happens to have been born there.
  42. Recap. The Punisher 2017 S 01 E 12 Home: Rawlins could simply shoot Frank, but decides to slowly beat him to death, and his disagreements with Russo cause him to insult his partner to his face. Russo even calls him out for this as the entire mess with Frank started because Rawlins wanted him dead for the loss of his eye.
  43. Characters.Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games: Not invited to the Olympics? Fog up London with the Phantasmal Fog and endanger the populace! Though, it was all because of a misunderstanding.
  44. Recap.Justice League S 2 E 23 Comfort And Joy: The Ultra-Humanite is destroying a wing in Central City's art museum because he considers the modern art ugly and unworthy of tax funds.
  45. Recap. The Flash 2014 S 2 E 22 Invincible: Zoom kills Henry in the old Allen house just to prove his point that he and Barry are the same.
  46. Film.Smosh The Movie: Steve YouTube says that one of the reasons he plans on trapping Ian and Anthony in his website forever is because they didn't think his penis joke was that funny.
  47. The Annotated Series: Remarked on in the third Spectreman episode, where the plot gets kicked off by Karas kidnapping and horribly mutating some random guy because he accidentally got water on Karas's jacket.

    Unsure/Other Misuse (18/88)
  1. PlayingWith.Poke The Poodle: Subverted:
  2. Podcast.Blowback: So Saddam Hussein has fallen from dictator of a nation with an array of palaces to a prisoner facing execution. What's on his mind? According to one of his interviewers while he was in captivity, one of his main concerns was a suspicion that the troops that took him prisoner stole the gold that he had with him at the time of his capture. An example attached to a real-life figure, despite the trope being NRLEP
  3. Characters.Darkwing Duck Major Villains: (Negaduck) Is quick to throw a fit the moment things don't go his way, and goes berserk at the notion of not being considered the top villain in St. Canard.
  4. Characters.Tomie: (Tomie Kawakami) Arguably what makes her so horrifying. Tomie has no apparent long-term goal or master plan in her actions. She simply wants to mess around with people, extract as much resources as she can from them, and emotionally torment them. Her small-mindedness makes her horrific. Doesn't describe any specific examples, but I do vaguely remember her having some more small-scale evil actions.
  5. Myth.Sawa Mythology: Njambe Inono eventually gave up on trying to kill Jeki after having his plans foiled again and again. So he retired and was content to mumble insults under his breath.
  6. Characters.Super Paper Mario: (Dimentio) As if his other misdeeds weren't bad enough, when the heroes succeed in defeating him, he's so spiteful that he leaves behind a shadow of his power that will keep The Void in existence long enough to ensure the end of all worlds with no chance of them coming back. It's only thanks to Tippi and Bleck pulling a Heroic Sacrifice that the universe is spared.
  7. Funny. The Silverscale Arena Season Two: Robbie Rotten fights Richard over the title of being the laziest man of them all. But Robbie's attempt to attack Richard backfires when the piece of metal he was using shatters upon hitting Richard's belly.
  8. Film. The Last Sharknado Its About Time: Morgaine attempts to exploit the Sharknado to take over Camelot, even after Merlin promised to give her Excalibur if she would help them stop it.
  9. Pantheon.Duos: He, Dr. Insano, and Professor Poopypants tend to work together for the purpose of creating crazy scientific creations for various motives, most of which are rather petty and odd. The effectiveness such machinations in causing mayhem can vary from being mostly harmless to being very threatening until someone steps up to put down their work. What they lack in consistency and inability to go for direct solutions, they make up for in unpredictability and mind-boggling complexity that prevents their enemies from figuring out their plans right away. That said, others have begun to figure out whenever they're collaborating by a cacophony of mad, villainous laughter. Sounds like some might be valid but can't tell.
  10. Webcomic.Kill Six Billion Demons: Accomplice by Inaction:
    • Gog-Agog becomes one to Jagganoth during the Discordance of Demiurges by first sitting back and refusing to help until forced into it by Solomon, then leaving the battlefield at a crucial moment because she felt underappreciated, allowing Jagganoth to gain the upper hand and proceed with his multiversal purge.
  11. TabletopGame.Vecna Trilogy: Vecna once had all of the people of a city executed except for the officials because the latter begged for the former's lives. Can't tell of sadism or petty motives.
  12. Characters. The Ultimates: Once she shows she's a traitor, she does so in the nastiest way possible - first by murdering Hawkeye's kids, and then by murdering Jarvis.
  13. Characters. Its A Wonderful Life: He takes immense pleasure in George's suffering.
  14. Film.Buddha: Devadatta seems strangely interested in one particular monk, Ananda. He casts a magic spell so Ananda will violate his vow of chastity and have sex with the beautiful slave girl Auttami. The arrival of the Buddha and his words break the spell and Ananda leaves Auttami's bed. After this Devadatta starts thinking bigger, corrupting a prince so that he might use the prince's power to crush Buddhism.
  15. VideoGame.Cradle Of Empires: Menes will occasionally show up to cast curses that interfere with your efforts to rebuild the city, forcing you to assemble certain collections and undertake quests so you can turn the curses aside and get back to work on the rebuilding. Menes's main motivation for engaging in these acts of sabotage is heavily implied to be sheer spite and rage at you for having the audacity to give the townspeople hope of living happy and productive lives... until the special event that revealed his backstory showed that he's Brainwashed and Crazy and is not attacking the city of his own free will, so it's really Amrun who fits this trope. Can't tell if actions are minor compared to their other evildoing.
  16. Date A Live - Isaac Ray Peram Westcott: He's a sociopathic lunatic that desires to see the world burn, but even with his grandiose ambitions that doesn't mean he won't try to get under your skin. At which point he even planned on using the prospect of rape as a Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique just to be cruel. Likely too heinous to count, but raise issue of if about "not significantly heinous" or "not significantly compared to their other evils".
  17. Characters.Apex Legends Assault: We Used to Be Friends: With Mad Maggie. They grew up together as freedom fighters on Salvo, trying to keep their planet out of Syndicate control. However, they began to grow apart when Fuse became more interested in pit fighting. The final straw for Maggie came when Fuse announced he was leaving Salvo to join the Apex Games, which are run by the Syndicate. His attempt at smoothing things over with her resulted in an antique grenade going off and left Fuse short one limb. Maggie would then go on to hijack the games (multiple times) to get back at him further, demanding the legends bring her his other arm.
  18. YMMV.Hey Arnold The Jungle Movie: Alternative Character Interpretation: Lasombra refusing to give Rhonda the Wi-Fi password. Was it a case of Evil Is Petty or Pragmatic Villainy considering that if she had internet access, she could easily message someone to rescue the kids from his prison? Doubles as Fridge Brilliance. Not clear how this compares to there over evildoings/or if about their motives.

    ZCEs (7/88)
  1. KnightTemplar.Anime And Manga: In the original Mobile Suit Gundam most of the Principality of Zeon's Ace Pilot characters such as Ramba Ral and Johnny Ridden fervently believe that they are fighting a righteous war of independence against The Federation, with The Rival Char being a bit of an outlier due to his outward loyalty to the cause while secretly having his own motives. Once again, “villain acting like jerk” is the default for villains. Also, “villain provoked by minor inconveniences” is Hair-Trigger Temper.

We're going in circles here. At this point I don't think anyone will change their mind on what their preferred definition is. We may just need a crowner

Think so too, to me the distinctions brought up so far still feel like the other tropes we have.

What are the crowner options?

[up]Possibilities

  • Disambiguate (because so broad).
  • Rename the intended definition to be more indicative.

If what constitutes as Petty is so broad (to the point of what's considered petty is possibly YMMV) we keep going in circles and any useful definitions are redundant with existing tropes...

And if Evil Is Petty should be YMMV because of the above, we already have Jerks Are Worse Than Villains which is attracting issues over the scope.

Knowing history, mods will surely ask "to be more indicative" of what, meaning what are the definition options. Crowners that invite to continue brainstorming on what the action even does typically get don't get added.

It sucks because this is definitely a trope I like seeing, but yeah if we can't even determine what "petty" means for individual villains who engage in complete non-crimes/actual misdemeanors/kid-friendlyish crimes, it's at the very least hard to fully salvage. The only other option I can think of is turning this into a reaction of non-crime sprees to something that the villains think is someone else's Felony Misdemeanor, though that might get easily confused with Harmless Villain (even if the villain also has to commit major crimes to count).

There are a number of possible definitions for this trope that I've seen:

  • A villain who is evil in small ways in addition to big ones.
  • A villain who is extremely motivated by very minor slights.
  • A villain who acts gratuitously jerkish.
  • A villain who is prone to Disproportionate Retribution as one of their defining qualities.

Actually, I have a suggestion: we could more strictly define Evil Is Petty as meaning "evil in small ways as well as big ones", then group "wants revenge for minor grievances" and the like under something like "Evil Is Vindictive". What do you think of that idea?

[up][up][up]First one is valid and the best definition I've seen. Second and forth sound redundant with Disproportionate Retribution (fourth less so but listing the moments would functionally be the same). Third I'm not getting if/how it's separate from Jerkass.

I assume a possable rename would wait until deciding on the definition.

Another possible def.

  • A villain who put disproportionate effort into committing minor evildoings.
This may be redundant with Kick the Dog though.

acting like a jerk is the default for villains.

Not always. There are plenty of villains who are motivated by good intentions, as well as villains who are genuinely friendly and well-meaning.

Evil Is Petty is a villain who goes out of their way to be a dick simply because they can, in much the same way that For the Evulz is being evil simply for the sake being evil.

They're a villain, yes. Does that necessarily make them a jerk? No, but they can when or if they choose to be.

I wouldn't mind failure so much, if I didn't fail so much.

Looking through some of the wicks, I've found some other possible "definitions" based on how it was used:

  • Villains who deliberately go after vulnerable and/or taboo targets.
  • Villains who take the time to be malicious towards people who really should be beneath their attention.

So, how should the crowner work? Different definitions and the disambig / index options?

[up][up][up]Affable and well-intentioned/sympathetic villains are trope-worthy because they are exceptions/subversions of the normal expectations for villains I was referring to. Villains being cruel is too normal to be a separate thing. Petty is supposed to be a specific kind of cruelty, but the line between that and regular villain cruelty is causing this issue.

[up][up]Politically Incorrect Villain and Bullying the Disabled might cover the former, but worth taking to vote. Second one looks good.

[up]Suggested crowner for Evil Is Petty on this thread have been:

  • Disambiguate.
  • If disambiguated create a new trope better fitting the definition.
  • Define as major villains doing minor acts of wrongdoing.
  • Define as villain who is extremely motivated by very minor slights.
  • Define as villain who acts gratuitously jerkish.
  • Define as villain prone to Disproportionate Retribution as one of their defining qualities.
  • Define as villain putting disproportionate effort into committing minor wrongdoings.
  • Define as villain who deliberately goes after vulnerable and/or taboo targets.
  • Define as villain taking time to wrong those who should be beneath their attention.

Anything else? If not we've been stuck debating this so long we need a crowner to decide how to proceed.

The second option needs to go; the definition is the thing we've been fighting over. Making a new trope for it doesn't explain what that trope would be (plus it's a TLP thing anyway)

If there's so many possible definitions, maybe we could bump it up to a supertrope? Going off here, we could spin off the subtropes of (working titles) Commits All Evil Big And Small, Petty Motivation, Supervillain Superjerk, and Disproportionate Villain.

Not sure all of those need to be their own tropes, though.

[up] New tropes are up for TLP as mentioned in a post above. Does the crowner suggestion sound fair enough?

Reformatting the description to sound like a Super-Trope can probably be an option.

And the whole "definition" thing as if we agree on what it is. It's just a mess.

Rest of it seems fine. I'd agree with adding the supertrope thing if we have a clear idea on what it would be.

although im the one who brought up the cruella de Vil example, i actually now agree that is not a good definition. Its too subjective, and theres very few examples that fit that which dont also fit Disappointed by the Motive. Will vote for the "Major villian, minor evil" version

supertrope could also work

[up]Supertrope actually couldn't work if we can't figure out the definition, as WarJay has been trying to explain, and as I've been having to explain the past several months whenever supertrope proposals have come up without being properly laid out.

Anyway, I'll see if I can put a crowner together.
