Needs Help: Prongs Of Poseidon

Go To

To-do list:

Original post

Prongs of Poseidon is in a bit of a situation right now, because it's very explicitly trying to be several tropes at once.

Counting the on-page examples is relatively straightforward, since they're already sorted by folder on the page itself:

  • Poseidon/marine tridents have 61 distinct works linked, not counting one ZCE ("BIONICLE: Kiina and Turaga Nokama have these"). This accounts for 52.14% of examples.
  • Satan tridents have 28 distinct works linked, not counting one ZCE ("Touhou Project: Nue Houjuu from the 12th game wields one, however she is a subversion"). This accounts for 23.93% of examples.
  • Random tridents have 21 distinct works linked. This accounts for 17.95% of examples.
  • Gladiator/disarming tridents have seven distinct works linked. This accounts for 5.98% of examples.

Regarding inbound links, I opted to focus on dedicated examples over miscellaneous links and potholes, as these would be the most relevant to deciding the viability of a page split by showing how many examples each potential "offspring" would have. Consequently, I checked only character and work pages, looking at every fifth example.

    List of checked wicks

Ratios:

  • Sea/Poseidon tridents: 51/104 = 49%
  • Demonic tridents: 9/104 = 8.7%
  • Gladiator tridents: 2/104 = 1.9%
  • Tridents/pitchforks with no narrative significance: 22/104 = 21.2%
  • ZCEs: 20/104 = 19.2%

My conclusions are:

Firstly, this page is very under-crosswicked. There are 117 works linked on-page, versus 644 inbounds. The majority of the works I checked were not listed on the page.

As for the examples themselves, notice that both lists are largely dominated by sea/Poseidon/mermaid/fish-associated tridents, the inbound list more so. Normally this would be the opposite of a problem, since it shows concept cohesion — but this trope is currently supposed to cover the other uses of tridents as well, which means that the fact that people are not using or linking for those definitions is a problem. The page's title and presentation absolutely contribute to this, I feel — logically, who would look at a trope called Prongs of Poseidon, with a page picture of a big merman in the ocean, and think that this is also supposed to cover, say, Satan's pitchfork? Folding those other tropes into this one is very clearly hurting them.

My proposal is as follows:

  • "Pitchforks associated with infernal figures" is the most obviously viable trope to extract here. It has plenty of examples and is very clearly a strong trend in fiction. Carve out its folder and send it to the launch pad.
  • "Pitchforks associated with gladiator figures/used for disarming opponents" could also be viable, but I feel it lacks enough material to work with. We could try to extract it too, but I'm not too confident that that would yield results.
  • The third type is by its own definition tridents that have nothing to do with any specific theme. That's chairs by definition and should just be cut.
  • Having decided what to cut and what the send to TLP for separation, comb through the inbound wicks list, keep examples of the sea-themed type and crosswick them to the main page, move any applicable ones to the new draft/s, and cut everything else.

Thoughts?

[up] - Yeah, that's more Evils Pitchfork...

Maybe try Sinfest?

Satan from Animaniacs? Could use a quality upgrade, but it's obviously a Big Red Devil and I like how the pitchfork is front and centre.

Erm... this trope is about evil characters who use tridents/pitchforks. Examples don't have to literally involve Satan.

I'm not going to stop anyone from replacing the image if anyone thinks it's necessary (I wasn't the one who added it; I didn't check who did either). I just wanted to point out that the image that was chosen is still an example.

[up] - Well, I was in error about my proposed name then.

I would've wanted Evils Pitchfork instead of Devil's Pitchfork then.

Well, obviously evil goes with Satan and pitchforks are associated with evil because of Satan so I don't see the problem.

It ain’t that deep, but it shows the codifier. Just how Prongs of Poseidon’s wielder doesn’t literally have to be Poseidon.

Speaking of POP, should we change its Laconic now? And its Analysis and such too?

I'd rather move Sandbox.Prongs Of Poseidon into place before changing the subpages of Main.Prongs Of Poseidon, and ideally we'd move Sandbox.Prongs Of Poseidon into place at the same time as Sandbox.Devils Pitchfork (and we'd transplant the redirects I made for that trope to point to it; I made them as well as Main.Devils Pitchfork into redirects to Prongs of Poseidon so mod intervention isn't needed to edit them).

So these tropes are just for actual weapon wielders, right? Because I had been thinking of The Devil Wears Prada's film poster (stiletto heel that ends in a pitchfork) but that's just devil's pitchfork imagery.

Also, that would be a duplicate of the image on Film. The Devil Wears Prada.

I think they are just asking if it would be an example. But I think it is flexible enough to count.

I think The Devil Wears Prada counts. It's using the pitchfork to evoke Satan.

I feel like we should focus less on the image and more on getting the descriptions into a state where they can be moved into Main/, followed by cleaning up the wicks, because I'd prefer if this thread didn't get derailed by discussion regarding the fact that Ganondorf isn't Satan despite still being an example of a trope about evil trident wielders. Image Pickin could still be used while wick cleanup is taking place after the split is complete.

So, I don't see anything wrong with the descriptions of Sandbox.Prongs Of Poseidon and Sandbox.Devils Pitchfork, so I'm going to move them to Main.Prongs Of Poseidon and Main.Devils Pitchfork in three days if nobody objects. Alternatively, they could be moved now if anyone chimes in saying they think the descriptions are fine and if the image for the latter is the only thing being objected to, and image discussion could be deferred to Image Pickin.

Edit: For the record, I mean I'll transplant the sandboxes in three days if nobody objects to the descriptions. I still don't think this is the right place to discuss image changes, so I'd still rather defer that discussion to Image Pickin.

Alright so if Satanic imagery/references that involve the pitchfork count then I can rustle up a couple more just from digging through google. Most are just quotes referring to devils carrying pitchforks though (like not wanting to end up on the end of the devil's pitchfork), but I think one is referring to some sort of b-movie involving a satanic pitchfork dude.

I should probably clarify that when I said I was prioritizing the descriptions with the plan to move the sandboxes to Main/, I wasn't saying that image changes can't be done at all before the move. My reason for prioritizing the descriptions is partially because the descriptions and examples are more important than images and page quotes, and partially because images for trope pages are subject to change to a greater extent than descriptions (plus they're easier to change, since Image Pickin changes tend to go through more quickly and easily than Trope Description Improvement Drive changes), hence why I referenced Image Pickin.

Alright since Devil's is the new trope, I tried to page through a bunch of google results in hopes of finding more examples. Tedious and nigh fruitless work, but eh. Is what it is.

To avoid people accidentally checking an already checked section, it'd probs be good for people to say which namespaces they've looked through so others can know they don't need to

for example, Evil Counterpart wicks are [tup]

Poseidon only has 650 wicks. We're just moving the Devil-s, right? No need to Google things?

Or are there not enough examples?

We're also completely removing examples that don't have have anything to do with the sea (Prongs of Poseidon) or evil (Devil's Pitchfork) instead of moving them.

Crown Description:

Consensus was originally to split Prongs Of Poseidon between Poseidon-influenced tridents, Satan-influenced tridents, and gladiator-influenced tridents. However, on the second page of this thread, the tropeworthiness of gladiator-influenced tridents has been questioned. Should the creation of a trope for gladiator-influenced tridents be skipped?
