Found this at Fire Emblem Heroes and deleted it because it looked like misuse to me, but I'm not entirely sure and want to bring it up just in case.

  • Legendary Hero banners. On one hand, the fact that they remove all but the specific 5*'s means that players at the very least will get unique or special heroes that are rare or highly sought after for skills or use, such as seasonal units or rare to get normally, plus the addition of the new Legendary Hero means the player can get a special variant hero that can help players create special teams based around the legendary elemental effect, so many people find them to be the best way to spend orbs and often will save up for them. On the other hand, the lack of a 5* pool of larger size means that the pool to pull from is smaller, meaning the increase percentage rate to get a new 5* is debatably worse than a normal banner, causing many to waste time and money pulling and getting nothing. It doesn't help that, with the exception of Fjorm and Legendary Ike, you cannot get the Legendary Heroes without pulling. At the end of the day, the debate focuses on if the banners are fair to players, or a bait for money that are not worth investing in.

To trope, or not to trope...that is the question.

[up] As the person who put it up, I argue its a fine point, though I would also like to point out that removing it before discussing it, when it wasn't a clear misuse, would of been better to wait for. Also YMMV is opinions, and as long as the entry is valid for time and is signs of a split, it is fine.

The point was that Legendary Banners have a polarizing view because the fact you have one new legendary unit, in a sea of other rare units, with a deceptively high 9% that is offset by having all but a few 5 star units left, is something people have expressed frustrations, and love for. And yes, I might have mixed feelings about it, but it is something people would also feel the same way about, these banners can often be devise because these banners can be a welcome addition, or a frustration.

I play Fire Emblem Heroes as well. I can vouch for that.

Yeah, it was fine. Sorry about that. I jumped the gun. (Heck, I even realized that seconds after I made that edit). I did rewrite it a little upon readding it, though, to make it sound a little less like one person's opinion.

I really shouldn't edit the wiki unless I 100% know what I'm doing.wink

You're fine! I was trying to make it seem as much as a 2 sided debate, with some frustrations over the last one being present. Seriously, 10.50% rate and I got Fjorm.

I removed this entry off of YMMV.The Legend Of Zelda Four Swords because there isn't honestly a broken base surrounding this issue:

  • Broken Base: Princess Zelda, or more specifically Princess Zelda's design. It's quite unpopular and rarely gets much mention by fans, nevermind fanart. Many consider it an ugly design or at best Ugly Cute. Despite this, she does have her fans who like her design. The manga adaptation of the sequel didn't even bother to use the design, instead opting for something more similar to her Wind Waker design.

I have a question about Smash Bros. here. If a reveal happens that causes the six month rule to retroactively befall what was a valid BB, what do we do with it?

Relating to this, should Broken Base and Base-Breaking Character only apply to what's actually in the work as opposed to hypotheticals like the above example? (It's at the mercy of if it's done well, which seems too dicey and speculative even for YMMV.)

Reposting from the previous page:

Bringing up these examples from The Lovely Bonesnote

  • Broken Base: Susie and Ruth switching places so that Ruth can see that the afterlife is real and Susie can have one night of passion with Ray. Some readers take issue with the tone shift the scene creates—pushing a little too far into the supernatural, and maybe too much emphasis on a romance that never really came to fruition—while others appreciate that there is at least some closure in such a heavy story. Many also debate over whether it was really okay for Susie to use Ruth's body to have sex with Ray. Ruth never consents to this, and it can make Susie come across as selfish and unable to let go of a boy she was never truly with. The fact that Susie chooses to use this reality-defying experience to visit Ray as opposed to her father or siblings also rubs some the wrong way.

  • Broken Base:
    • The depiction of the in-between, which is drastically different from how it is in the book. Some fans dislike it for merely being Gratuitous Special Effects and accuse the CGI of taking attention away from the main plot - as well as the Mood Whiplash involved (from family mourning their daughter to Scenery Porn). Others feel that it's a perfectly reasonable depiction of how a teenage girl would imagine her heaven to be - not to mention that it's still ultimately shown to be empty and that Susie has to move on.
    • Let's also not forget Peter Jackson. On paper he seemed like the perfect choice for this property. He had history with making long movies based on books, weird horror in his early career, and even a movie about a very questionable subject matter. (All of which rather important to the book to retain it's character development, weird supernatural bits and its high use of sex including with teen characters) The actual movie he delivered had a lot of division. Some finding it strange how someone who seemed to fit the material so well would neuter so much of it. On the other hand some who weren't as big of fans of the book found his treatment to be a good way to transform it from page to screen.

The Project × Zone page has a few.

  • More than a few people were that annoyed some of the cooler characters in the roster (Sanger Zonvolt and Heihachi Mishima, for example) are in the game as "Solo Units" rather than fully playable roles. The same thing happened when Brave New World announced Phoenix Wright, Maya Fey and Axel Stone.
  • Some Street Fighter fans are upset at the fact that Seth is the villain representative for the series and not M. Bison. To be fair, Dictator is already dead at this point from the timeline of The 'Verse. Of course, he did come Back from the Dead in his game as well. However, if the opening of the sequel is any indication, M. Bison will be returning.
  • There are some fans who think the plot of Project X Zone is simply an Excuse Plot to continue from Namco X Capcom, while others are content this Crossover between three different publishers (four, as of Brave New World) are even happening.
  • Because Sonic the Hedgehog was excluded from the Sega line-up, a lot of people weren't exactly happy about it, given he is the company's mascot. However, the blue hedgehog has a sizeable Broken Base of its own; additionally, neither Klonoa (who was in Namco X Capcom but not here) nor many other animal-based/non-humanoid characters from other video games also appear in Project X Zone (the ones that do are largely villains); all this is before mentioning Sonic the Hedgehog is more popular in the West than it is in Japan.
    • Adding to the setting and nature of Project X Zone is the argument of whether or not its content is the reason why Sonic isn't included. An extension of this is the argument as to whether or not having a seemingly all-human roster on the heroes' side and not on the villains' side is intentional or just mere coincidence (the latter appears more likely to be the case).
  • Both games borrow the Turn-Based Strategy formula of Namco X Capcom with the Action Commands button-inputting of Endless Frontier, but is this mechanically "good" as part of game-play or does it become a redundant chore after a while?
  • Female characters in Brave New World, specifically Pai Chan, Ling Xiaoyu, BlackRose and Estelle, seemingly being replaced with male characters Kage-Maru, Kazuya Mishima, Haseo and Flynn Scifo (the latter was in the last game, but as a Solo Unit) was not well received. Fortunately, Xiaoyu, Pai and Estelle are in the sequel; the problem is the latter two are now Solo Units, giving certain players something to complain about.
  • Were Kogoro/Mii victims of underdevelopment to their characters in the first game and deserve a return in the sequel to properly do so or were they shafted because of the possibility of them getting overshadowed (again) by more popular pairings like Reiji/Xiaomu and the rest of the roster? Given their absence in Project X Zone 2 and Reiji/Xiaomu ascending back to protagonists, indications point to the latter; additionally, there was a divide among players whether or not Kogoro/Mii were Flat Characters who had less plot relevance (despite being the main characters) as the party grew larger, unintentionally making them unappealing and unvaried compared to other pairings.
    • The fact that Brave New World shows the Koryuuji mansion late in the game yet the two don't make an appearance and are only mentioned in passing has peeved the Kogoro/Mii fans more.
  • Regarding character inclusions and overall series representation in the sequel, a lot fans have become vocal about the amount of Spotlight-Stealing Squad Sakura Wars is getting compared to other franchises - notably, all four characters return as pairs, with two new bosses from their series entering on top of two returning Sakura Wars villains from the first game. By contrast, Street Fighter and Tekken have individually less representation, but since they're one of the most well-known series from Capcom and Namco Bandai respectively, some fans believe what they have is justified, yet naysayers will argue series' character count is in favor of Sakura Warsnote . Some fans of Sakura Wars see this justified due the franchise being one of SEGA's juggernaut properties, having lived the glory days as the flagship franchise and Killer App for Saturn in Japan and has quite an expansive media and legacy stretching to present day. On the other hand a good number of players, mostly in the west, dislike Sakura Wars due in part of how generic the cast feels when compared to the other characters in the game as well as the fact that out of all the franchises, Sakura Wars overshadows more popular franchises.
  • The inclusion of a Hot Springs Episode in Brave New World: although it's a completely optional cut-scene that's played for Fanservice, the fact it's only available on New Game Plus doesn't help its case. Is it truly worth viewing on a second play-through or not?

The one about Sakura Wars I feel is valid, the rest not so much.

Too much spoiler tagging. Especially since Audience Reactions aren't part of the story and thus can't be spoilers, unless the entry spends much time (that is in most cases: too much) discussing the in-story factors. That example also sounds too weak.

Alright so I looked around and found that BrokenBase.Super Smash Bros has been discussed before, but it never really went anywhere. It's a shame too because that page is a dumpster fire. I've versed myself in the criteria for this trope and am willing to review each individual example on the basis that nobody else should have to suffer it.

If I go over all of the examples at once, I would never survive, so I'm willing to do these in batches. I'll include short summaries of each entry to save time. For this post, I'll go over all the stuff in the Characters folder.

An important note: Almost all of these entries refer to the fourth game in the series. If it's any other game, it will be directly specified.

     The Character Folder, Abridged
  • Mario: "His personality is different, and he's everywhere - is that good?"
    • Nobody argues about either of those things. Zap it.
  • Link: "Are people chumps for using him online?"
    • The stigma against Link did exist at one point, but he would eventually become respected, something noted by the entry currently on the page. Cut.
  • Jigglypuff: "Why the hell is she still here?"
    • This one's fine. This is a valid war that has been going on for 20 years now.
  • Pikachu: "He represents the anime - is that a bad thing?"
    • Again, nobody argues about this. Cut.
  • Princess Peach: "Overtly cutesy and overexposed, or delightfully fun?"
    • Oh man, I remember this one. Some guy went around trying to slap Peach with every Scrappy trope he could think of and had his stuff undone every time until he settled for this trope. Not only is it another "nobody argues about this" entry, it's flat out misleading - Peach's "overexposure" amounts to being on the box art for the fourth game.
  • Wario: "Disgusting or hilarious?"
    • Wario is a meme-machine. He's adored. Cut.
  • Roy: "Pointless, or awesome?"
    • Roy is one of the single most popular characters in the entire series. His inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Melee, along with Marth, literally brought the Fire Emblem franchise to North America. He is a quintessential Ensemble Dark Horse. Zap it.
  • Diddy Kong: "Is he too good and annoying?"
    • He's purely a High-Tier Scrappy. Always has, always will be. Nobody is rooting for him. Cut.
  • Star Fox: "FALCO VS. WOLF WHO GETS TO BE IN THE NEXT GAME FIND OUT THIS SUNDAY"
    • This debate died five minutes after Smash 4 came out. They listed Krystal underneath that for some reason too, despite not listing two opposing sides to that idea.
  • Ice Climbers: "Was the existence of the 3DS version worth cutting these two from the roster?"
    • As the test of time and game sales can tell, everyone agrees that yes. Yes it was.
  • Toon Link Vs. Young Link: "Who is gooder???"
    • The arguments for this subject are a) nonexistent and b) moot now that Young Link is back for the fifth game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • Wii Fit Trainer: "Do people like her?"
    • Again, lasted five minutes. Most people are neutral towards her nowadays.
  • Zero Suit Samus: "Is her existence and overt fanservice a bad thing for her home franchise and for Smash Bros. as a whole?"
    • This entry is fine. It nails all the points and the debates rage on.
  • Miis: "Are they a bad choice due to their home games? Also, were they a waste of development time cuz you can't use them online?"
    • The first point was a vocal minority - most people like the Miis. The second point is moot because you can use them in online tournaments now.
  • Lucina: "Fire Emblem over representation + being a Moveset Clone = bad or good?"
    • The first point is a universal problem with Fire Emblem, not just her, and I will address it later. The second point stemmed from a key misunderstanding of how Moveset Clones are made in Smash Bros - people think they "stole" development time from another, non-clone character, but in reality they take virtually no time and money to make. When this fact was cleared up, people changed their tune. Overall, cut this one.
  • Meta Knight: "OH DEAR GOD HE'S BACK, but are we okay with that?"
    • This conflict died faster than Mufasa. Zaaaaaap.
  • Rosalina: "Is she annoying to fight? Is she being given too much focus? Why is her in-game name Rosalina and Luma?"
    • First point falls under Tier Induced Scrappy. Second point doesn't matter because most people like her as a character anyway. Third point is dumb and should be thrown in a well. Remove.
  • Dr. Mario: "He's a clone, do we care?"
    • As I mentioned, the stigma around clones was subdued when the nature of their development was clarified. Remove it.
  • Palutena: "A good choice for the roster, or Kid Icarus over representation? Does she suck?"
    • Like Lucina, she is a symptom of a separate problem. The second point is Tier Induced Scrappy again. Cut.
  • Koopalings: "Are they a Spotlight-Stealing Squad?"
    • Five minutes.
  • Duck Hunt: "Do you have PTSD from a dog laughing at you?"
    • Duck Hunt is a universally acclaimed character choice. Zap it.
  • Pichu Vs. Dark Pit: "Who's a bigger Scrappy?"
    • This entry dealt damage to me in real life. Cut it.
  • R.O.B.: "Is he a good choice?"
    • R.O.B. usually has some ugly heads turn his way whenever he's confirmed to appear, but never enough that most people would actually want him removed from the games. The only time he got serious vitriol was around the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where he was perceived to have been included in place of fan-favorite Ridley. Cut.
  • Charizard: Not even gonna sum up this one - the entry admits he's not this trope anymore.
  • Pokemon Trainer: "Should he come back?"
    • Moot now that he is, and to much fanfare too.
  • Dark Pit: "Is he a good choice?"
    • Dark Pit was viciously hated for the longest time. Nowadays people are neutral. Either way, not this trope.
  • Snake: "Does he fit with the tone of the series? Should he come back?"
    • Snake was the single most requested character to return after he was absent from Smash 4. Most people like him, to say the least. Cut.
  • Sonic: "ummmmm"
    • Sonic's entry does a really bad job of explaining what sides are fighting each other. It explains sides but not what they argue about with each other. Regardless, Sonic's hatred currently stems from a competitive standpoint, locking him as a Tier Induced Scrappy. Cut.
  • Pac-Man: "Is he a good choice?"
    • Most people are ambivalent towards Pac nowadays. Not this trope.
  • Cloud: "He's an Anti-Nintendo character. Are we okay with that?"
    • Keep it. Maybe trim the entry to be shorter than the Bible.
  • Bayonetta: "Was the ballot rigged? Does she fit Smash? Is she overpowered?"
    • First point died in five minutes, again. Second point was collateral from the first from people who were in denial and it died about as fast. Third one is agreed upon to be a resounding yes, and that goes under Tier Induced Scrappy. Delete.
  • Corrin: "Everything about them, I guess."
    • This character has half a screen of text dedicated to explaining the circumstances behind them, when absolutely all the conflict regarding Corrin died within a month. Cut away.
  • Waluigi: Not even gonna bother with this one. He's not even a playable character - the entry regards the people who want him to be instead of the man himself. Cut.
  • Mii DLC Costumes: "Are costumes based on desired characters that aren't in the game a slap in the face?"
    • The people who complained about the Mii costumes forgot about it within like a day. Zap it.
  • Assist Trophies: "Are they a lazy way of incorporating wanted characters without putting them on the playable roster?"
    • The discussion about the Trophies only picked up after Waluigi was confirmed to be an Assist again for Ultimate, which isn't even out yet. Wait about a year from now and we'll see where the argument is at, if there is one at all.
  • Cartoony Characters Vs. Realistic Ones: "Which one fits the game better?"
    • The fact that there's an Awkward Zombie comic about this makes me feel like this is just a weird scuffle that happens every now and then rather than the sheer flaming this trope demands. Remove.

To summarize: keep Jigglypuff, Zero Suit Samus, and Cloud. The rest have no place here. I'll try and go over the other folders if I have time.

[down] Oh dang, you're right. Alright, she can go too. ZS Samus and Cloud are still a-okay, from what I've seen, they just need some rewrites.

[up][up] This is correct. They're just placed with the other Broken Base entries for simplicity's sake, which I'm on board with.

[up] Neither of those seem to have the prerequisite longevity or viciousness. I'd say cut em.

Now, for part two of my quest to clean up BrokenBase.Super Smash Bros. This post will focus on the Use of Source Material, Over-Representation, and Mechanics folders.

     Source Material Abridged
  • Ganondorf's Moveset: "Are we cool with him being a copy of Captain Falcon?"
    • This is a rare instance of two equally large factions being fully capable of living alongside each other - a lot of people love Ganon's current moveset, and a lot of people want the Dorf to have a unique one, with plenty of overlap. I almost never see them actually fight each other over it. Cut.
  • Wario's Moveset: "Should his moves be based more on his original games instead of having new ones invented for him?"
    • Most people would prefer it, and nobody's really flaming one another over it. Cut.
  • Samus' Moveset: "With the inclusions of Mega Man and the Mii Gunner, should Samus have her moveset reworked to be less physical and more based on projectiles?"
    • Same as Wario. Cut.
  • Charizard and Mewtwo's Movesets: "They suck."
    • This entry is flat out negative. No two sides at all. Destroy it.
  • The Voices of Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong: "Are we okay with their realistic voices, or should they go back the goofy, cartoony voices they usually have?"
    • I literally didn't know people even discussed this concept. I have never seen a word spoken of it anywhere. Zap it.
  • Marth, Roy, and Cloud Speaking Japanese: "Should they speak English in English countries?"
    • Again, no real fires or longevity over this. Cut.
  • Duck Hunt's Name: "Why they called that?"
    • This entry is sooooo looooong for a topic that lasted for three seconds. Cut, cut, CUT.
  • Sheik's Gender: "Is Sheik a dude?"
    • This is a separate fandom altogether. Plus, Smash itself firmly refers to Sheik as female, so it's kind of a pointless topic in the first place. Zap.
  • Metroid: Other M's Presence: "Why??"
    • Okay, so people fucking hate this game, and so do I, but I feel like it can be cut for this reason: when Ultimate revealed that Samus would continue to use her Other M design for the Power Suit and Zero Suit, the reaction was largely just some moaning before moving on. So, not enough conflict/longevity for this trope.
  • Mega Man's Animations: "Should they or should they not be based on his sprites from the original games?"
    • People don't caaaaaaaaaare. Cut.
  • Pokemon Pokemon Pokemon: "Are the anime elements a bad thing? Is there too much Gen 1 focus? Should the side games get focus?"
    • People actually like the anime elements, for the most part, so that should be zapped. Most people don't mind the gen 1 focus, so that can go. I haven't seen too much discussion of the side games period, so that can go too.
  • Overt Focus on Specific Games: "What the hell am I reading?"
    • There is absolutely no focus in this entry. It's just a list of stuff that doesn't get repped in Smash without arguments or counterarguments. It doesn't matter what point it wants to make, it's garbage. Destroy it, and let someone with a more clear idea of what it's supposed to be take a stab at it.
  • Shulk's Presentation: "Is Shulk too memey?"
    • This is about fandom perception of the character instead of the man himself. It has nothing to do with the games, the characters, or what they do. To top it off, I never see it ANYWHERE. Cut.
  • Tharja's Trophy: "Was removing it in the name of censorship of good idea?"
    • Everybody forgot about this so fast. The game wasn't even out at the time! Delete it!

     Over-Representation Abridged
  • All: "Is there an issue with certain franchises receiving too much attention? Is there an issue with other ones not getting enough?"
    • This is a completely legitimate argument that happens constantly, with bitter results. It's just that it doesn't need to be 4 mega-paragraphs taking up a chunk of the page. I'll write a much more compact version to encompass everything at once.
  • Swordfighters: "Do too many people use swords?"
    • Even though I think this topic is dumb as hell and a waste of energy, it's widespread enough to get a pass. Just needs to be shorter.

     Mechanics Abridged
  • Brawl Vs. Melee: "Which one's better?"
    • While the Brawl vs. Melee debate would eventually die, with Melee being the winner, the concept behind it (Pros vs. Casuals) lives on. Delete the entry, because there's another entry at the bottom of the page that covers that very idea pretty well.
  • Air Dodge: "Do we prefer the directional variant of Melee or the momentum saving one from Brawl?"
    • Similar boat to the above, and also moot due to Ultimate managing to reach a compromise between them. Zap it.
  • Advanced Techniques: "Are they glitches? Are they fair? Do they make the games too inaccessible?"
    • This one's fine. It's kinda like how you see people bitch about speedruns because they aren't playing the game the "right" way. Needs some shortening though.
  • Rolling in Smash 4: "Is it too good?"
    • Evidently yes, because it got nerfed in Ultimate. Doesn't matter either, because people had largely accepted it anyway. Cut.

To summarize: condense the Over-Representation folder into a single entry, rewrite the Advanced Techniques and Swordfighter entries, and gut the rest. I'll do the last two folders when I get the chance.

Bringing up this example from Winnie the Pooh:

  • Broken Base: The Disney franchise as a whole is this to fans of the original novels, the common Adaptation Displacement not helping either. Most common points of division are the Americanization of the British stories, and the changes in characterisation and storyline, with the Disney version most often downplaying the novel's sarcasm and non-sequitur humour for more sentimental stories (eg. in the novels, Eeyore and Rabbit were foolish, bitter Jerkasses, Disney's Eeyore is The Woobie while Rabbit is often a repentant Jerk with a Heart of Gold).

And now, for the grand finale of BrokenBase.Super Smash Bros. This'll cover the final two folders, WiiU/3DS and Other:

     WiiU/3DS Abridged
  • The Concept Itself: "Should the game have been on a single console, or is splitting it into two a good idea?"
    • This died the second the 3DS version came out - while eventually not considered quite as good as the Wii U version, it's still a Smash game, and that was enough for most. Hell, it actually sold better than the Wii U version. Cut.
  • For Glory: "Is it perpetuating the stereotype of Pros being boring?"
    • Jesus, this entry is bad. It's completely one-sided in favor of the Pro players, and the topic was ultimately forgotten about. For Glory itself inspires total ambivalence in people. Kill it.
  • Crazy Stages: "Are there too many bad stages for competitive play?"
    • Yes. The entry itself doesn't even try going against that idea. Virtually everyone agrees too many of the stages are a hassle to play on. Cut.
  • The Splits: "Was splitting off Zero Suit Samus and Sheik from Samus and Zelda a good idea?"
    • The test of time says yes. People are cool with it nowadays. Cut.
  • DLC: The entry itself says the point is moot now that a) DLC is in the game and b) it's also available on the 3DS version. Kill it with fire.
  • Smash Run: "Is it good?"
    • Conflict died fast. Nowadays I see people openly say they liked it, but that it needed improvement. Cut.
  • Smash Tour: "Is it good?"
    • Died about as fast, with a less pleasant conclusion. Regardless, nobody fights about it. Cut.
  • Custom Moves: "Literally a timeline of complaints."
    • Yet another "IMMA COMPLAIN" entry. Zero focus. Cut.
  • Focus On Later Games: "Are more recent titles getting too much focus?"
    • Nobody cares. Cut.
  • 3DS Version: "How does it stack up to the Wii U?"
    • The entry itself comes to the conclusion that people think it's good, with some positive and negative points in relation to the Wii U version. Zap.
  • ESRB Rating: "Is the game worse off for risking being labeled a "kid's game" due to being rated E10+?"
  • The Smash Ballot: "My character didn't get in! Boo!"
    • Oh boy! More complaining! KILL IT!
  • Miiverse: "Should it be in the game, due to it's potentially risky content?"
    • You guys have no idea how much petty, short-term squabbling is in this fanbase.
  • Umbra Clock Tower Music Selection: "Could there have been better music choices?"
    • This one isn't even a debate! It barely even tries to present itself as one! Yes! Everybody thinks that!
  • Midgar Music Selection: "Could there have been-"
    • Almost the same entry with a different stage. Cut.
  • Palutena's Guidance: "Are they good? How do they stack up against Snake's Codecs from Brawl?"
    • Somehow someone thought an incredibly short-term dispute deserved an absurdly long entry. Cut.
  • Smash 4 In General: "Is everything bad or is everything good?"
    • This is literally the entry that caused me to take action because of how much it infuriated me. No. It's neither. Smash 4, despite having plenty of tiny disputes, has ultimately failed to really break the fanbase in half. This entire folder is pointless whining about a bunch of petty crap.
     Other Abridged
  • Adventure Vs. Subspace: "Did Brawl or Melee have the better "platform game" mode?"
    • Both have many fans with tons of overlap and people were peeved when Smash 4 didn't offer an equivalent. Cut.
  • Banning Meta Knight: "Should it be done?"
    • This was a years-long, vicious conflict that ended up killing the entire Brawl competitive scene. The only reason the conflict died is because the fanbase itself collapsed from the argument, and while there's not as much fire over it today people aren't sure what the answer was. This stays.
  • Event Matches: "MELEE'S THE BEST"
    • I'm not even kidding. That's basically the whole entry. Burn it.
  • Masterpieces: "Were they pointless?"
    • Oh my god, why would anyone even assume somebody complained about this?
  • Living Toys: "Are the characters inanimate objects? Does it matter?"
    • Where is everybody encountering these pedants who feel the need to argue about itty bitty things like this? Get rid of it.
  • The Melee Competitive Scene: "Is it good or bad?"
    • A good old fashioned Casual-Competitive Conflict. The entry itself is far too one-sided against the pros and fails to mention some of the other things people like about pro-Melee. Needs a hefty overhaul, preferably one that can encompass the competitive formats of all the games, because they cover a similar subject.

In summary, expand the Ban Meta Knight entry, make a new one about the pro-scene, and get rid of everything else.

Final Conclusion

I think I may have gone insane reading this page. Overall it should look like this once I'm done with it:

Characters

  • Entry for Zero Suit Samus.
  • Entry for Cloud.

Other Stuff

  • Entry for the competitive scene.
    • Sub-entry for advanced techniques.
    • Sub-entry for the attempted ban of Brawl Meta Knight.
  • Entry for representation.
    • Sub-entry for perceived over/under-representation of certain franchises.
    • Sub-entry for Swordfighters.

And maybe keep that Brawl in the Family picture. I like it.

This is a massive change I'm proposing here and I dearly want some feedback before I do anything.

Do it. You've already suffered for our sins, don't shy away from what must be done. You're the hero we need.

I personally think Dark Pit and Lucina could count as Base Breaking Characters.

[up] Lucina... I'll admit that I can see her, if only because she seems to get much more bashing and defending than other Fire Emblem characters. What makes you say Dark Pit, though? His fanbase was largely eclipsed by his hatedom, and even after the hate died down he doesn't seem to have too many fans. I don't think he clears the "equally large sides" rule.

Bringing up this example from Saving Mr. Banks:

  • Broken Base: Between those who think it's a great story and those upset with the changes to history, especially the implication, intentional or not, of Travers approving of the film after seeing it, when she really went to her grave despising it. Given that the film was produced by Disney, one can get the impression that they're giving themselves a Historical Hero Upgrade. Inversely, Travers said in a 1977 interview that, "It's glamorous and it's a good film on its own level, but I don't think it is very like my books", suggesting the film depicting her accepting it might be valid. Lindsay Ellis discusses the idea in this video essay (she's a fan of the film).

[up] That entry should be removed since it's about the film's overall reception and not an argument between fans of the film. Though it might fit better under They Changed It, Now It Sucks!.
