Fanfic / The Future Briefing Island

Go To

One day, Izuku wakes up not inside his dorm room, but in an unfamiliar room inside a hotel resort on a tropical island. And he isn't alone, given that his friend Ochako is also with him in the same room. He quickly finds out that all his classmates plus Itsuka, Tetsutetsu, Hatsume, Aizawa, Midnight, All Might and Nezu have been transported to the mysterious island as well.

There, they're greeted by a mysterious woman named Kamimoto, which gives them the chance to see both their past and future events, so they can lead Japan to a better future than the one they were heading to.

The Future Briefing Island by Shire_Folk is a My Hero Academia fanfic where Izuku and his classmates and mentors watch the ''My Hero Academia'' anime.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Of the Writers Cannot Do Math variety. In this story Midnight is Momo's mother. This caused several issues that were pointed by some readers explanation , which the author amended by making Midnight a couple years older than her canon age and stating that she only had Momo a year after graduating from UA.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Mineta says through the group chat that he's been made aware of "how Midoriya's milkshake brings all the girls to the yard", Kyoka admits it was funny.
    • More generally, Izuku will occasionally laugh at his own on-screen misfortunes and antics, seeing the humor in them in hindsight.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Izuku gets Blackwhip when he fights Ochako, months before he got it in canon.
  • Adults Are Useless: Aizawa eventually identifies this as one of the reasons for Izuku's Chronic Hero Syndrome. After years where no adult helped him with his problems, and then the incident with the Sludge Villain, he interiorized the idea that he had to be the first to act if he wanted to make adults do their job.
  • Age Lift: An invoked case. Canonically speaking, Midnight is roughly a year older than Aizawa, being his upperclassman as established in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. When it was decided to make Midnight be Momo's mother here, this was pointed out in the comments, along with the fact that, even if Midnight was an Absurdly Youthful Mother, with Momo being fifteen, Midnight would have had to have her when she was 16, one or two years before the death of Shirakumo, and that it would be highly unlikely she'd have been able to remain at U.A. in any capacity if she was a teenage mother, let alone hide the fact she was a mother from everyone. Because of this, it was decided to make Midnight a couple years older than Aizawa, and established that she didn't give birth to Momo until about a year into her career.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Poor Momo suffers a lot through the story. Inevitable when your mother is Midnight.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Subverted hard for Momo, where the narration makes it clear that she's slowly awakening to her bisexuality, if her having daydreams about both Izuku and Ochako are any indication.
  • Anger Born of Worry:
    • Mei screams at Tenya (while crying) that she wants to make gear for everyone because she can't stand the idea of them being in danger.
    • Mina yells at Kirishima for training by having Bakugo use his biggest explosions on him.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Downplayed. Itsuka Kendo, Neito Monoma, and Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu were already the three most prominent members of Class 1-B in canon, and Mei Hatsume was already the only Support Course student with any real relevance, but the four of them were still only supporting cast. Here, all four are present for the viewings and receive just as much focus as the other viewers.
    • Played straight for Midnight, who, while one of the more reoccurring members of the staff, didn't get as much focus as her contemporaries like All Might, Aizawa, and Nezu, outside of the prequel series My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. Here, she's present for the viewings alongside the others, and gets more importance by virtue of being Momo's mother here.
  • Awesome Music: In-Universe, the students, especially Kirishima and Jiro, often gush about the series' great soundtrack, especially the first opening and "You Say Run" (or, as they call it, the "Izuku does something badass" track).
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Thanks to seeing the Entrance Exam from Izuku's point of view, Ochako is mildly disturbed over how by merely treating him with basic decency, she made such a huge impact on Izuku, while to her he was just some kid she helped and immediatedly forgot about.
  • Beleaguered Bureaucrat: Discussed, While All Might sees all bureaucrats as the obstructive kind, Aizawa reminds him that it's their duty to enforce all the laws that politicians make, including the nonsensical and contradictory.
  • Beyond the Impossible:
    • After the scene with Bakugo's Suicide Dare to Izuku, All Might bursts into his muscular form out of sheer rage, even though he doesn't have One for All anymore and the room they're in has a Quirk suppressor.
    • Played for Laughs during the sex ed class, where Momo is so embarrassed by her mother's teasing that she ends up creating a matryoshka doll while under the same Quirk suppression effect.
  • Blazing Inferno Hellfire Sauce: Hellfire Cola, Bakugo's favorite drink, is an Endeavor-brand soda that is about as hot as pepper spray - people tear up just from the smell, Izuku mentions puking for several hours after Bakugo forced him to drink one, and when Bakugo force-feeds Monoma a can it makes the latter sick as well.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Downplayed. While Nezu has an intellectual understanding of human morality, he demonstrates how different that is with having an emotional understanding at numerous points during the viewing. When numerous students voice disgust or outrage at the fact Mineta latched himself onto Momo's back during the obstacle course race portion of the Sports Festival, Nezu kept rebuking their issues with counterarguments based on logic or pointing out what he saw as double standards, such as the fact Momo had clearly punched him in the face at several points which should suffice as payback, or how Momo could have torn her track suit off and just made a new one during the race, or how Izuku, Bakugo, and Shoto also gave unwanted physical contact to each other yet aren't being reprimanded. Even Midnight is outraged at Nezu suggesting Momo, her daughter, strip on live tv, but is stopped by Momo herself before she can protest further.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: When Kamimoto drops a spoiler on how badly Izuku hurts himself much later in the year, Ochako, who was just contemplating confessing her feelings to him, rallies herself in this direction instead, rejecting him outright when he attempts to confess and claiming she'll prevent him from getting into any sort of romantic relationship, because seeing them miserable but alive and well would be preferable to seeing Izuku horribly maimed or worse.
  • Brick Joke: When the teens begin to make up Embarrassing Nicknames for Bakugo, Todoroki suggests Cherry Popper, causing most everyone to crack up laughing. In Chapter 20, during the Sex-Ed class, he brings it up again - and Midnight explains what "popping the cherry" means, causing him to blush.
  • Bullying a Dragon: It doesn't matter how many times it's pointed out to him that he's surrounded by twenty people ready to kick his ass and that Kendo would likely let them do so, Monoma keeps antagonizing 1-A and claiming they are all arrogant blowhards even when he's getting blatant proof of the contrary. Aoyama actually name drops the trope when they are watching the Cavalry Battle.
  • Cat Girl: Most of the employees at the hotel resort are this.
  • Chick Magnet: Izuku. Several girls tell Ochako that if she doesn't confess her feelings for him soon, then it's open season on him. Even after she does, they still make quite a few comments.
  • The Chosen One: The rest of the class begin to jokingly call Izuku "The Chosen One" when they find about his relationship with All Might and One for All.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Aizawa takes some time to gently point out to Izuku the dangers of this after watching Season 1's last chapter.
  • The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: Mina notes the irony that, as much as she loves to gossip about romance, she sucks at dealing with her own feelings.
  • Composite Character: While the anime has never said anything about whether if they are connected, Bakugo, Jiro and Shoji have come to believe that Dr. Tsubasa and Dr. Garaki are in fact one and the same due to their similar appearances, the fact that Tsubasa has been made into a Nomu, and that the two Doctors sound the same.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: While the girls are having their 'talk' with Mineta over his behavior, Hagakure decides to take things into her own hands by giving Mineta a kiss on the cheek to tease at his possible reward for good behavior. Because the girls have plausible deniability since they "didn't see anything happen", Mineta is stuck wallowing over how he can't say anything about this to anyone because no one will believe him.
  • Cringe Comedy: The entirety of chapter 20, which consists in Midnight giving the students a (rather lengthy) lesson in sex ed. The chapter is even titled "Embarrassment Central".
  • Cuteness Overload:
    • The girls undergo this when they see 4-year-old Izuku.
    • Izuku name-drops the trope in the scene with toddler Ochako.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Something All Might laments while watching the reaction to Mineta having latched himself onto Momo's back is just how different this kind of situation is treated between Japan and the United States, which is Truth in Television. In the US, Mineta's actions would be considered criminal acts via sexual harassment and result in authoritative, if not legal, punishment. In Japan however, Mineta's actions are given more leeway by faculty and peers due to Japan having less options. Corporeal punishment is long outlawed, school clubs are Serious Business so detention isn't an option, pulling them out of class would risk outraged parents saying their students were missing valuable learning time, and the most students can do is social outstracize the offender. All Might even mentions to Izuku how, when he was staying in the States with David, they both told anecdotes of these kind of situations to each other, and neither could believe the others stories in how their countries handled things.
  • Devil's Advocate: Played straight, then subverted with Mineta hitching a ride on Momo's back during the first test of the Sports Festival: as Izuku points out, Midnight had stated that she gave them permission to pretty much do anything as long as they didn't leave the stadium, and latching onto somebody else to carry you is a legitimate strategy; the subversion comes when he points out that, had Mineta's intentions been purely strategical as he claimed, he would have chosen somebody with both great physical shape and a very large back for him to latch, such as Shoji or Sato, yet he instead went for Momo.
  • Disappointed in You: With a heavy dose of anger. After watching Bakugo's Suicide Dare to Izuku, All Might tells Bakugo he's unworthy of both being a hero and Midoriya's rival. Bakugo calls him out on this later, for treating who he was in the past as if that's who he is now, and that he worked to be at U.A. and to be a hero, regardless of what All Might thinks of him. All Might admits he was in the wrong for what he did.
  • Drinking Game: At the beginning of the second season, Aizawa and Midnight decided to have one whenever All Might says "I am here!" in the series. One episode is all what it takes for Aizawa to regret the idea.
  • Do I Really Sound Like That?: Iida often asks this when the series shows him acting at his most uptight, which makes him feel a little embarrassed.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Due to how Bakugo has yet to get a Hero name, the others decide to make up their own ideas for the lulz. The worst/most hilarious is Todoroki's "Cherry Popper".
  • Embarrassing Pyjamas: Downplayed, and not for the wearer, but Izuku notes how jarring it is to see Principal Nezu in their pajamas, a pink set with a cap and patterned with blocks of cheese. Nezu himself shows no reaction to such.
  • Emotions Versus Stoicism: The core of the debate as to whether or not Mineta deserves more punishment due to his hitching a ride on Momo's back during the Obstacle Course of the Sports Festival. While many of the characters are incensed by the actions taken by the Pop Off user, the stoic side, which includes Momo herself after reviewing the tapes, say that while morally repugnant and doing him no favors in his pursuit of fame and women, was a viable strategy as a way to compensate for Mineta's weaknesses such as his short stature which makes him slower than the rest of his classmates. Not that the other students aren't ready to have a 'talk' with him.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: When Izuku manifests Blackwhip, Todoroki assumes that this is because Izuku was never actually Quirkless.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: While nursing a drink over watching the USJ events, Aizawa is stumped by something he can't grasp that's informing Izuku's actions, namely how he went against orders to come to the aid and support of his teachers who should be protecting him. When he lays out his concerns to Midnight, the latter mentions it sounds like he's saying Izuku doesn't trust adults to handle things, and Aizawa instantly realizes that she's right.
Aizawa: "That's it. Midoriya doesn't trust us adults. [...] That's what I couldn't figure out. That's why he's such a damn problem child. Once he’s in a situation he doesn’t trust anyone other than himself and his friends to handle it.
  • Exact Words:
    • At the noon pause on day 2 (at the end of chapter 16), Aizawa keeps 1-A from beating the crap out of Monoma, telling them he doesn't want to see them doing anything to him. The students quickly understand what he means.
    • The students eventually realize that Kamimoto's claim that she could provide them with anything really means anything - even if it comes from fictional universes. When Mei requests materials to craft Tony Stark's Arc Reactor and Captain America's shield, Kamimoto's only problem is that it'll take time for all that stuff to arrive.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Upon hearing the explanation about how One For All is transferred, Iida and Shoto instantly freak out over their mutual encounter with Stain, though Izuku quickly assures them the transfer can only be done willingly.
  • Flat "What": The general immediate reaction to seeing Ochako's "rainbow puke" scene.
  • Fridge Horror: In-Universe, when they find out that Dr. Tsubasa is the same doctor who works for All for One and the one behind the Nomus' creation, Izuku remembers that the Nomu that almost kidnapped him in Hosu had wings, just like a member of Bakugo's Gang of Bullies who was the grandson of said doctor, whom he hadn't seen in years. Bakugo mentions that the kid and his parents moved to another city, but both him and Izuku grimly realize that the chances that said kid was used to create that Nomu were high.
  • Fridge Logic: In-Universe, Aizawa's Quirk Apprehension Test gets this reaction from the viewers:
    • When Izuku (in the series) laments that he's lagging behind because everybody else have already mastered their Quirks while he's still struggling with One for All, Hagakure points out multiple times that her invisibility gives her zero advantages on a physical test. Same with Ashido, who only used her Acid for the 50 meters dash and it didn't give her that much of an edge.
    • Relatedly, Hagakure asks how could had she placed higher than Midoriya, given that Midoriya did much better than her in pretty much every exercise (especially in the softball throw) minus the seated toe-touch, and asks Aizawa how did he grade them. Aizawa refuses to provide an answer. Hagakure later states she suspects Aizawa rigged the results against Izuku, which Aizawa admits.
    • Izuku asks Tenya why he didn't use his Recipro-Burst super move for the test. Tenya's answer is that he didn't want to reveal it so soon.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: While still true in canon, Bakugo's status as this is especially pertinent here, where his relationship with most of the class is almost irreparably damaged by the revelation of his Suicide Dare. All Might notes that despite such a crippling blow to his already tenuous reputation amongst 1-A, Bakugo still has friends who will be in his corner and support him.
  • Fun with Acronyms: As noted by Kamimoto in the first chapter:
Kamimoto: "You're on the Future Briefing Island, or FBI for short!"
    Everyone, internally: (Beat) "FBI, huh?"
  • Gag Penis: When Midnight mentions the average for penis sizes, Izuku is stunned to learn that having to stuff it down a pant leg isn't normal. Ochako and Kyoka blush up a storm when they hear him muttering about it.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: When Ochako is in the middle of a mumble storm over how she believes herself unworthy of being with Izuku, Momo gives her a slap to shock her out of it.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Izuku has one when Kaminari and Monoma make a "Not So Different" Remark regarding Izuku and Shigaraki, as he believes he might become evil sometime in the future.
    • Izuku has another one when he realizes that Dr. Tsubasa is the same doctor that works for All for One, and when he deduces that his grandson, the winged kid that was part of Bakugo's Gang of Bullies, was probably turned into one of the Hosu Nomus.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • It's unknown who gave them their lessons, but both Bakugo and Izuku aren't just familiar with basic sex education but are in fact able to answer many questions about the female anatomy that isn't covered in it.
    • In-Universe example: Aizawa pegged All Might as somebody who was all muscle and no brain, with a personality as deep as a puddle, who reveled in the adoration of the masses and basked on the attention the media constantly gave him. However, the series allows Aizawa to see how All Might is when there are no cameras around. Watching how All Might trained Izuku forces Aizawa to rethink his idea of the #1 Hero.
The Number One Hero, the most popular hero in Japan, with tons of merchandise and a huge media personality, instilling in his successor the values of boring humble community service work? And he wasn’t just giving his quirk to Midoriya and letting him run with it, the man had a method, a training plan, and had clearly thought this through. Maybe deep down he had All Might pegged all wrong?
  • Hypocrite:
    • Todoroki points out that, for all of Aizawa's dislike of the Entrance Exam, his Quirk Apprehension Test wasn't that much better, as it also favored people with destructive Quirks to the detriment of Quirks that are more subtle or not suited for direct combat. This is lessened by the fact that Aizawa wanted to see how the latter group would react to a situation where their Quirks weren't obviously useful, and that ultimately, with the exception of Izuku, no one was at risk of being expelled.
    • Aizawa calls Midnight out for defending the Entrance Exam when she failed it (since her Quirk has no effect on robots) and had to transfer to the Hero Course from Gen Ed by making a good showing at the Sport Festival.
    • When Aizawa continues being 1-A's homeroom teacher after the USJ attack despite still being so wounded he's covered in bandages, Midnight basically explodes and calls him and All Might out on setting up a bad example for Midoriya, since how can they expect to stop him from endangering himself and neglecting his own health when his two biggest role models aren't any better?
    • When Aizawa expresses his disappointment with Nezu's idea of training the students with the death maze, the principal points out that the former's "fake expulsion" stunt caused just as much trauma to students.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: One of the reasons Izuku never tried to tell Aizawa about his problem with One for All was that he wanted to feel like a normal teenager for once.
  • I'll Never Tell You What I'm Telling You!: In Chapter 31, Momo reveals her attraction for Izuku and Ochako and her racy fantasies with both of them in this way.
  • Immortality Field: According to Kamimoto, no one is capable of dying on the island, which Midnight advocates using it as much of possible in terms of the students' Quirk usage.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Discussed. Ashido has a crush on Kirishima, but she isn't sure if he's gay or not.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: When Kamimoto first quips that at least one of the adults will want some alcohol at some point in the first day, Aizawa snarks at her to get serious. Two hours and the first four episodes later, he admits he definitely wants a drink now.
  • Internal Reveal: Inevitable given the premise.
    • The first few episodes reveal to everybody not already in the know that Izuku used to be Quirkless, the truth being his relationship with All Might, and One for All.
    • Shoto realizes that this would also eventually affect him as well, as Izuku is the first person who he told about his home life.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Mineta is revealed to have either had a subpar or completely detrimental version of sex education due to using completely improper and anatomically invalid terminology, calling a woman's urethra a "pussy fountain". He does somewhat redeem himself by acknowledging the fictitious nature of pornography as well as calling those involved as performers rather than stars or actors as doing so would discredit those who work on proper mainstream performances.
  • "Let's Watch Our Show" Plot: Characters from My Hero Academia watch the Out-of-Universe anime of the same name.
  • Make-Out Kids: Once they get together, Izuku and Ochako start kissing everywhere. Even if it's in front of their classmates.
  • A Man Is Always Eager: Averted. When Izuku and Ochako wake up in the same room with no memory of how they got there, and they implicitly bring up the possibility that the two had sex, he's just as distressed as she is; hormonal teenager or not, Izuku doesn't feel mentally prepared to have sex just yet, especially with a girl he isn't even in a relationship with.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: Discussed and defied. Both Izuku and Ochako believe in this at first, which plays a part in their hesitation towards becoming a couple, but Iida points out that, being the latest scion of a long family of heroes, he's the living proof that this trope isn't true, and heroes can have relationships and form families.
  • Must Make Amends: Once Aizawa learns about One For All and just how inexperienced Izuku is at using it, his response during the first break is to apologize and promise to make up and be a more active teacher.
  • Mythology Gag: Izuku suggesting to turn U.A. into a giant Helicarrier is one to the Final War Arc, where U.A. becomes a flying island.
    • Much like in canon, Izuku unlocks Blackwhip in a combat situation with Ochako around to try and calm him down, and requires outside help to shut it off. Unlike canon, he does so while fighting with Ochako as an opponent instead of an ally, and the outside help is Aizawa erasing it instead of Shinso brainwashing him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Momo manages to convince Ochako that it is feasible for her to be in a relationship with Izuku while both of them are heroes, but then Kamimoto lets out a spoiler about Izuku's state after what's presumably meant to be the Paranormal Liberation War Arc. Ochako not only doubles down on her intent to keep her feelings locked up, but openly rejects Izuku and tells him she's going to prevent him from having any romantic relationships. This leads to her fight with Izuku and Izuku unlocking Blackwhip ahead of schedule.
    • Todoroki's hatred for his father is so great that seeing a, possibly doctored, photo of Enji and his mother Rei being happy together is enough for him to burn the pin-up book that is the key to his group's escape.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Kendo of all people lets out a Squee at the idea that Izuku's perception of Ochako made him see her puking rainbows, and regularly notes how Izuku can be adorable.
    • When Bakugo wakes up to find about a hundred rubber duckies in his bathroom facing one suspiciously designed to look like him, he notes that if he weren't so weirded out by what he was seeing, he'd call the duck that looks like him cool. And when he goes to get rid of them all, he specifically keeps the one that looks like him, christens it "Baku-duck", and places it next to his shampoo, looking around nervously the entire time despite being alone in his bathroom.
    • When Mineta cheers as Snipe shoots at Shigaraki during the USJ incident, Aizawa decides to let it go, because he's enjoying seeing Shigaraki being turned into Emmentaler cheese a bit too much.
    • Much to his classmates' surprise, Todoroki isn't above jabbing Ochako over the whole rainbow barfing.
    • Momo once tried to use her Quirk to recreate Captain America's shield and had a tantrum when she realized she couldn't replicate Vibranium.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Kaminari and Monoma point out that Shigaraki has some similarities to Izuku, namely, that they both tend to mumble their thoughts out loud a lot and that they both have acute analytical minds. Though, upon seeing what effect such comments have on Izuku, the rest of the class quickly reassure him that that's where the similarities end.
  • Not So Innocent Whistling: When past!Mineta is shown whining about losing his headband in the Cavalry Battle, Tetsutetsu (in whose team was Ibara, the one that stole it) does this. Kirishima just grins.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Monoma's reaction when he realises all of 1-A is after his ass and that not even Kendo is willing to help him.
    • Momo when she sees her mother's face a few moments before her sex ed lecture begins.
  • On Second Thought: After Bakugo screams that Izuku owes him a free punch for accidentally freeing the Sludge Villain, Kaminari points out that, by that logic, Bakugo owes Izuku a lot of free punches for all the beatings he gave him when they were younger. Bakugo decides to retract his demand.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten:
    • Everyone loves to needle Ochako about how Izuku portrayed her as puking rainbows.
    • Izuku's penchant for breaking himself is something his classmates keep bringing up.
    • The "clench your buttcheeks" comment gets a lot of mileage.
    • The blatant attraction between Izuku and Ochako.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Izuku swearing is treated as this:
    • When Iida and Todoroki point out how, unlike them with Stain, Bakugo not only wasn't chastised for using his Quirk during the Sludge Villain incident but was praised for it, Izuku called it "bullshit". The girls all chastise Izuku, and Mina even says that Izuku isn't allowed to swear since he's "too pure for that".
    • During the impromptu Sex Ed. class, Midnight reveals that some heroines such as Uwabami made porn films. When Ochako wonders in horror if they will also have to do porn if they want to be popular, an incensed Izuku goes on an angry rant on how no female hero should have to do such a thing to become popular. Lampshaded by Kyoka:
Kyoka: Holy shit, Greenie just said "fuck" twice.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Momo states she doesn't want to visualize her parents engaging in foreplay. Unfortunately, Midnight loves to speak about it just to tease her daughter.
  • Power Nullifier: The projection room where they watch the series has a Quirk suppressor device, stopping everybody from using their Quirks as long as it's active. Though, as seen in Beyond the Impossible above, it's not 100% effective.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Part of the sex ed class touches on this. Izuku reveals this as a kink of his (Bakugo quips he saw it coming "ten miles away") and quickly rattles off ways some of his classmates could actually use their Quirks for sex.
  • Professional Maiden Name: Midnight, who is Momo Yaoyorozu's mother here, uses her maiden name in her official biography as it does not list her marital status. It grants her family some anonymity as well as to her daughter to avoid claims of nepotism.
  • Recursive Fanfiction: Played with. ThoughtSpinner's In the Grasp of Schadenfreude shares a nigh-identical premise with that of Future Briefing Island, but specifically has the viewers comprised of people not present in the latter, namely several of the other staff members at UA and the families of the students, and their host having a much more malicious reason for having them watch the anime. However, it's all but outright said the events of Schadenfreude are meant to take place parallel to the events of this fic, the only reason it not being a Shared Universe due to there being no indication Shire_Folk recognizes it as canon to their fic.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Bakugo gets to give one to All Might for calling him "unworthy" of being a hero. He lays out how he and Izuku had already hashed out their issues, and that he's not the same person he used to be. That he doesn't care if All Might thinks he's unworthy of being a hero, or even unworthy of being Izuku's rival, he worked for his spot at U.A., and he will work hard to surpass Izuku, regardless of whether or not All Might chose him to be his successor. All Might even admits he acted rashly and shouldn't have treated Bakugo like he hadn't changed.
Bakugo: I don’t care if you think I’m worthy of being Deku’s rival or not, All Might, but I fucking earned my spot at this school. You think I didn’t bust my ass off too to get my quirk to where it’s at? I will be the number one hero, and surpass Chosen One over there. Just watch me.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Momo is Midnight's daughter here.
  • Relationship Upgrade: After much back and forth, Izuku and Ochako become a couple at the end of chapter 10.
    • Momo has hers with both Izuku and Ochako in Chapter 31 after she accidentally reveals how he finds them attractive.
  • Rewatch Bonus: In-Universe, thanks to the Recap Episode at the end of Season 1, Bakugo, Jiro and Shoji realize that Izuku's medic Doctor Tsubasa has the exact same voice as the doctor working for All For One, meaning that they're one and the same. note
  • Running Gag: Monoma and whether he has a Teeny Weenie.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • When the teens realize Midnight is about to begin giving them a sex ed talk, they all attempt to skedaddle. Unfortunately for them, the other adults were faster and have locked up all exits to the theater to prevent them from escaping.
    • When Tenya states that Hatsume is not his girlfriend, Mina asks what the inventor meant then about her showing him her tits. Tenya mutes the chat.
  • Serious Business: Sex education is this for Midnight, who during her course refuses that anyone uses any other forms of terminology for sexual organs outside of the most common ones, i.e. penis, vagina, etc. with little deviation. When Mina tries to do this in order to alleviate some of the tension, she's immediately chastised for it.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Hatsume has no trouble stripping down during the sex ed class in order to show how would she seduce a boy. She claims not to know what shame is.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Pretty much everyone for Izuku and Ochako.
    • Midnight ships Aizawa with Ms. Joke, much to the former's chagrin.
    • Nana ships Izuku, Ochako and Momo.
  • Ship Tease:
    • In-Universe between Izuku and Ochako. The rest of the girls never miss an opportunity to tease them whenever there's a scene when they're crushing on each other. A notable example is the scene where Izuku embraces the "Deku" nickname because Ochako thought it was cute:
Ashido: Yeah, you get that water, Dekuuu.
Jiro: You’re going to need it, Dekuuu.
Hagakure: The name suits you, Dekuuu, ‘cause you’re both so cuuute.
      • Momo is also getting droves of it with both Izuku and Ochako. At the same time.
    • Iida and Hatsume also get this after she strips down during the sex ed class and he gives her his shirt to cover up.
    • Mina and Kirishima also get this, with Mina professing interest in him while he blushes when she's acting sexy.
  • Shocking Voice Identity Reveal: Despite the class deriding the need for a previous-season recap, said recap enables the realization that Dr. Tsubasa, Izuku's childhood doctor, and the doctor who works for All for One have the same voice.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Shown Their Work: When addressing Mineta's antics towards the women of the series, Shire_Folk went to painstaking effort to research actual Japanese legal procedures, to the point that when All Might and Nezu went to give a lecture on ethics and law, they forewent that in favor of directly quoting the Japanese penal code and explaining the legal loopholes to highlight not only how, but also why Mineta can get away with his antics unpunished outside of slapstick, without in turn forcing anyone who subjects him to said slapstick to even worse legal procedures, while acknowledging said issues come from Deliberate Values Dissonance.
Shire_Folk: Mineta cannot face consequences from the authority figures, because acknowledging what he does means acknowledging what the girls did, not in self-defence, but in retaliation, and that is worse. Although we are an English-speaking audience consuming the product, it was made by a Japanese mangaka primarily for a Japanese audience, and we cannot impose our standards upon another country's right to create and enforce their own laws. Our laws; our standards, as Canadians, Americans, British, Australians, New Zealanders, other anglosphere, latinosphere, and other western/north-central Europeans have to take a back seat. Were Mineta to happen in one of our countries, things would (hopefully) be different, because our cultures and laws are different. But I'm not writing a MHA fic that takes place with students from Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Halifax, Gander, St. John's, Montreal, Gatineau, Ottawa, Trois-Rivieres, Thunder Bay, and Toronto all going to a hero school in Kingston. I'm still writing about Japanese kids going to a Japanese hero high school where the adults are not as competent as they should be because plot. There are issues; I'll try to address them, but I'm not waving a wand imposing our laws on them to make myself feel culturally superior to them. I’m working within the framework of the country this takes place in, and never mind that it’s set in the future that looks suspiciously similar to the present but with Quirks, it was written by an author of today who did not go into detail as to the exact wording of legislation or changes to Japan’s Penal Code. That’s not his target audience. Without specific mentions of anything to the contrary, I must assume that Japanese law outside of Quirk-related laws are identical to the laws as they are today in 2022.

So, with all of that taken into account, Mineta likely couldn’t face any legal repercussions for his actions because of the ambiguous language of the law and the actions the girls took against him in retaliation for his harassment. And before anyone mentions Article 37, paragraph (2), these are students without licences that would give them that special professional obligation. It’s the same basic premise for why what goes down in Hosu causes Chief Tsurugame to bark at the boys. Because they were not licensed, and caused excessive injury to Stain (it would need to be argued in a court as to whether or not their actions were necessary and/or excessive, but given that we never saw a trial for Stain and he was just locked away in Tartarus the whole time, I’m not sure exactly how functional their judicial system even is or if it’s degraded to being arrested and going directly to jail. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200), Tsurugame needed to have a talk with the boys for going against the law despite how the result was in the public interest.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Izuku is such a good person that when Ochako is confronted about her refusal to confess to him, both Mina and Kendo, who are already interested in other boys, admit that if it weren't for their attraction to said boys, they'd probably be trying to date him. Mina even admits that she wants a chance at Izuku in case Kirishima does in fact turn out to be gay.
  • Skewed Priorities: When, in the labyrinth, Kendo realizes that the key to getting out of a trap is to rip the pages out of a certain book (full of pin-up images of heroes), Iida tries to keep the book away from the others because he refuses to let a book be vandalized, even though (a) it's a temporary construct and (b) it's the only thing that can save them.
  • Sleeping Their Way to the Top: A discussed subversion. After learning that Uwabami performs in porn films, Ochako wonders if the female students would have to do the same or sleep with people in charge of the ranking in order to gain notoriety in the Hero Billboard Charts, causing an uproar. However, Midnight immediately shuts it down, stating that the way the Billboard charts rank heroes makes it impossible for anyone no matter what gender to do so. Uwabami just likes making porn flicks on the side, and if it brings it a little extra cash then bonus.
  • Smells Sexy: Hatsume blatantly sniffs the shirt Iida gave her.
  • Spit Take:
    • All Might has one when Midnight reveals that Momo is her daughter.
    • Several students have one during the "Eat this!" scene.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Several of 1-A ask Izuku why he didn't try to take all of Shoto's headbands at the end of the Cavalry Battle. Izuku admits he only took one because he didn't want to put Shoto's team through the same situation his team was just in - out of the tournament with no points.
  • Stylized for the Viewer: Discussed and Played for Laughs. Midnight reasons that Ochako puking rainbows is either this (since the series is told from Izuku's POV and he clearly has a crush on her) or some form of censorship. The classmates, however, decide to take it literally, since they can make fun of Ochako that way.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: A discussed zig-zagged example is Midnight discussing illegal fetishes, pedophilia specifically. She calls pedophiles victims, though not as much as their own victims, as they have no control over their bodies' reactions and the only thing they can do as Pro Heroes is educate, council and try preventative methods. But if they cross the line, all bets are off.
  • The Talk: Perhaps unsurprisingly, the teachers take the fact that they're on a tropical resort with 24 teenage students with some bunking in boy-girl pairs (and one of them actually hooking up) rather seriously. Midnight takes the lead and ask Nezu to allow her to give both a refresher course as well as new material about sex education. With Nezu's approval, Midnight proceeds to not only give said refresher but also delve deep into orientation, fetishes and kinks, ideas of how to use one's Quirk in the bedroom (thanks to Izuku) to even the adult entertainment industry.
  • Tear Jerker: In-Universe, the "You can be a hero" scene at the end of the second episode had almost the entire theater (including Kamimoto, who had already watched the episode before) in tears, with Bakugo, Todoroki and Aizawa being the only ones not crying.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • When the Zero Pointer shows up, Ojiro and Sato comment they were glad no one had to fight the giant robots. Two minutes later...
    • As the USJ Arc begins, everyone is handed bags for potential Vomit Discretion Shot needs. Hatsume claims her stomach is "lead-lined", so she won't need to use it. She's one of the first to do so.
  • Terrible Pick-Up Lines: Kaminari teaches Izuku a large number of space-based pick-up lines for when he decides to confess to Ochako. Jiro decides to punish Kaminari when she eavesdrops on Izuku quick-firing those lines.
  • That Came Out Wrong: While she clearly meant it in a "please kill me now" kind of way, Momo didn't realize how she sounded when she asked Izuku to "smash her" in chapter 20.
  • This Is Gonna Suck:
    • Kamimoto's reaction when she realizes the Suicide Dare scene is about to happen.
    • 1-A when they realize the USJ Incident is about to begin in the series.
  • A Threesome Is Hot: Momo reveals that she has a threesome kink with it being the standard two girls plus one guy as a testament to her somewhat closeted bisexuality.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Ochako and Aizawa mistakenly assume that the confrontation with the Sludge Villain caused Izuku to manifest his Quirk for the first time. When such thing didn't happen, Ochako wonders in horror if Izuku got into an even more dangerous situation after that one.
  • The Unreveal: Played for Laughs. When the class wonder what Nezu is, Izuku claims to know the answer. What is Nezu?
    Izuku: He's the principal.
    (cue Nezu laughing uproariously)
  • Unstoppable Rage: Upon watching the infamous scene of Bakugo telling Midoriya to jump out of a building, All Might is so enraged, he's able to regain his muscular form despite no longer having One For All and the room they were in being under the effect of a Quirk-suppressing aura.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Izuku's reaction to Bakugo pointing out Tenya doesn't have any authority to prevent Izuku and Ochako from "[taking] the first train to Pound Town".
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Midnight is the laid back, carefree parent who loves to crack inappropriate sex jokes and to tease everybody around her, while her daughter Momo is dignified, solemn, and often has a formal demeanor.
  • We Used to Be Friends: It takes a bit to get there, including a serious talk from the teachers, but Izuku eventually admits that he and Bakugo are this, and that it's been the case for many years. Part of his trying to move past their old relationship involves dropping his use of "Kacchan" as a nickname.
    • This said, even if Izuku doesn't want much to do with him anymore, Bakugo is still The Rival to him in being the number 1 Hero, so he'll still treat Bakugo somewhat politely because, in his words to Ochako, he doesn't want to be a dick about it.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Several:
    • As noted above, Bakugo gets several from many people over his bullying of Izuku. Not even Kirishima is above calling him out on his more reprehensible moments.
    • All Might also gets a milder one over telling Izuku that he couldn't be a hero without a Quirk.
    • Aizawa does this to All Might and Izuku for not mentioning that the latter did not get his Quirk until the day of the exam, because Aizawa completely misconstrued the reasons behind Izuku's lack of control and nearly expelled him, when Izuku should have been given the Quirk counseling he never got as a child. He does, however, admit that he should have asked about it and tried to help Izuku, instead of assuming Izuku had never bothered to control his Quirk out of arrogance. In the same breath, he also calls All Might out for waiting until the last second to transfer One for All, instead of doing it a week or so before the Entrance Exam so Izuku could properly test his new power.
    • Aizawa gives a pretty big one to Jiro when he sees her kicking Kaminari into a villain during the attack on the USJ, calling it unbelievably dangerous and reckless.
    • Mineta gets a few over his perverted attitude.
    • Midnight gives one to Aizawa when he returns to teaching even though he's still gravely injured, pointing out his hypocrisy in doing so.
  • Workout Fanservice: The girls really enjoy watching the many scenes of Izuku working out, many of them shirtless.
Hatsume: Yeah, you work those muscles, Midoriya.
