Fanfic / Solidarity Among Students

Go To

In the hopes of improving the bonds between his students — and preferably keeping them out of his hair — Aizawa provides the newly elected Class Representatives of Class 1-A with a group chat.
He knows it's not likely to reduce his stress levels, but he figures it can't possibly make things worse.
He'll learn.

Solidarity Among Students, Class 1-A Edition is a chat fic that takes place within My Hero Academia, the premise being (as shown above) Class 1-A having a chat group for the sake of helping them stay in touch and hopefully keep them from making Aizawa tear off his hair.

While the story itself follows the canon plotline, the chat provides several changes to the background events and other minor facets, as well as making for an entertaining tale as the students (and the teachers) squabble, argue, and make fun of each other using the chat as a medium.

Last updated December 2021.

This fanfic provides examples of the following Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny:
    • Hagakure and Kaminari find their chat nicknames (Invisibitch and ZappySus) hilarious.
    • When the students realize that the idea of giving Aizawa a card to apologize for him being Surrounded by Idiots would also rip on themselves, Bakugo actually decides to join them in signing it.
    • After Character Development, Mineta manages to make a few jokes the others (even Bakugo) admit are funny.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: All over the place!
    • Kaminari and Jiro are Childhood Friends.
    • Eraserhead and Present Mic are married.
    • Kaminari and Ashido are Friends with Benefits (they snog and date, but nothing beyond TV-PG).
    • Hagakure and Ojiro hook up before the Sports Festival.
    • Jiro and Yaoyorozu start dating sometime before the first term's midterms.
    • Midoriya and Uraraka become an item after the internships.
    • Koda begins dating Ibara a couple of weeks after the internships.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Most of the characters have a defined sexuality, as opposed to canon's silence on the matter.
    • Aoyama, Bakugo, Jiro, Kirishima, Aizawa, and Yamada are homosexual.
    • Asui and Yaoyorozu are bisexual leaning towards homosexual.
    • Ashido and Kaminari are bisexual.
    • Koda, Midoriya, Tokoyami, and Uraraka are demisexual.
    • Hagakure, Ojiro, and Sero are bisexual leaning towards heterosexual.
    • Mineta and Sato are heterosexual.
    • Iida, Mezo, and Todoroki are unsure or don't tell.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Uraraka uses "Deku" as one for Midoriya, per canon, and the girls mention him picking it as his hero name as one big evidence that he likes her. Inverted, though, when she goes First-Name Basis when they are in private.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Uraraka angrily yells at Iida, Midoriya, and Todoroki for fighting Stain and worrying all of Class 1-A. She's then chastised by a nurse (since they are in a hospital) and forced to continue her tirade in a lower voice.
  • Ascended Extra: Hagakure has limited roles in canon, typically used for a Running Gag about being invisible and naked. In this fic, along with Kaminari and Ashido, she is usually one of the main drivers of conversation on the app, being one of the most social members of Class 1-A.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: No matter how much Kaminari and Jiro bicker, they are great friends.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Midoriya is widely considered 1-A's #2 Cinnamon Roll. After his fight with the Hero Killer and his Relationship Upgrade with Uraraka, he threatens to kill his classmates if they wake up Uraraka. Everyone notes that Izuku doing that has a lot more impact than Bakugo (for whom "I'll kill you!" is pretty much a catchphrase).
  • Brick Joke:
    • Yaoyorozu's initial nickname is GachaQueen, and Ashido apologizes, telling her she will eventually come up with something better. She later refers to this when coining YaoMomo.
    • When Asui tells Bakugo to stuff his attitude towards Midoriya and Bakugo challenges her to say that to his face, Asui tells him to wait for it. Several chapters later, when Hagakure tells Bakugo off for pissing the other classes off before the Sports Festival, Asui brings up Bakugo's face when she actually went and did it.
    • When Kaminari off-handedly mentions how Uraraka shut him out during their second day while he was trying to hit on her, Jiro tells him to keep quiet so they can bring it up later when Midoriya and Uraraka finally get together. When the latter happens, Kaminari reveals the event, much to their horror and Jiro's hilarity.
    • Before the Sports Festival, Kaminari jokes that Midoriya will eventually realize how to use his Quirk without breaking himself and then think himself a dumbass for not figuring it out sooner. When Midoriya develops Full Cowl, he calls himself a dumbass and tags Kaminari.
    • After Aizawa learns that Midoriya is a late bloomer and berates Nezu and All Might for not telling him, the students sign a card for their teacher to basically apologize for him being Surrounded by Idiots. Several chapters later, Monoma finds it accidentally and reveals it to the teachers.
    • When the issue of what they are doing with their internship mentors comes up, Midoriya says that Gran Torino doesn't seem to give a fig about paperwork. After he leaves the hospital in the aftermath of the fight with Stain, Torino decides to teach him about paperwork and procedural stuff - and Midoriya mentions to Uraraka that Torino gives exactly one fig about paperwork.
  • Caught on Tape: An author's note gives a Suspiciously Specific Denial about Midoriya's leverage over Bakugo being a recording of the swan dive incident.
  • Character Development:
    • Midoriya grows out of his shyness and begins to show more confidence.
    • Mineta matures and stops being a blatant pervert.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: The 1-A students are amazed to see how ripped Midoriya is under his U.A. student clothes when the group goes to the beach.
  • The Comically Serious:
    • A good part of the humor about Iida is his penchant for taking everything too seriously.
    • Once he fully joins the chat, Todoroki proves to be this. Uraraka even mentions at one point that she's not sure what's funnier - whether Todoroki is actually completely serious in what he says, or if he is actually pranking everyone by pretending to be overly Literal-Minded.
  • Contrived Coincidence: At one point, half of 1-A ends up going to Dagobah Beach even though they were all making their own plans for couples.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: When Izuku mentions that he's sure Nezu has bugged the chat app 1-A uses, Nezu intervenes to state that "bugged" implies there was actually something in the app that wasn't closed to him.
  • Double Entendre: Part of the group will make them for fun - and then attempt to have more fun by goading Iida into trying to unravel it.
  • Double Standard: Discussed at several points between Mineta and Midnight, and later with Jirou. Mineta doesn't understand why it is that Asui can get away with making perverted jokes, or Jirou can get away with blundering with talking about breasts, while he's treated as scum for seemingly doing the same thing. Midnight (and later Jirou) points out that in their case, they only make perverted comments when it's actually appropriate, and have enough respect to recognize when they're in danger of going too far with their antics. By contrast, Mineta doesn't act with any sense of restraint or care for how uncomfortable he makes people with his perverse behavior, and in his case, his antics tend to lean dangerously close to harassment.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Kaminari quickly figures out that Midoriya, Iida, and Todoroki were the ones who actually beat Stain, but Jiro manages to talk him out of it by pointing out that had they done so, they'd have been arrested for Vigilantism, causing Kaminari to initially consider it to be a police cover-up by crediting Endeavor before Jiro convinces him to just drop it. Unbeknownst to them, he's entirely correct.
  • Embarrassing Old Photo: When Uraraka first visits Midoriya's home, the latter fears his mother will bring out his baby photos. It doesn't happen then - but it does happen when Iida and Asui visit along with Uraraka, shortly before the Sports Festival.
  • Embarrassing Nickname:
    • Some of the nicknames the characters use are this. Particularly Mineta, who gets stuck with StickyDiaperBaby between the USJ incident and the end of the internships.
    • Izuku finds himself freaking out when Kaminari bestows upon him "SmallMight", but mostly because (a) he wants to keep One for All secret and (b) he doesn't consider himself as strong as his idol/predecessor.
    • Inko's old nickname for Mitsuki is "Yappy Pom-Pom Bitch". When she learns about this, Uraraka coins "Yappy Pom-Pom Douche" for Bakugo, much to his anger - and his mother's hilarity.
  • Everyone Can See It: Pretty much everyone notices that Izuku and Ochako like each other well before they admit it to themselves and each other.
  • First-Name Basis: Midoriya and Uraraka doing this with each other marks their full transition to boyfriend and girlfriend.
  • Gag Echo: In chapter 28, Mitsuki calls something Inko says slander, with Inko replying that in text, it's called libel. In chapter 29, the same thing happens, but with Eraserhead calling something slander and Momo correcting him.
Mitsuki: Anyway, your asshole slander aside
    Inko: Mitsuki please.
    Inko: In text it's libel.
    [later]
Invisibitch: Awwww, sensei, we knew you loved us!
    (A few students): <3
    Eraser: Slander.
    Yaomomo: Now, now, sensei.
    Yaomomo: Written, it's libel.
    AuxcuseYou: LOL <3
    Eraser: ...Et tu, Yaoyorozu?
Yaomomo: I'm sorry sir I don't know what came over me.
  • Genre Savvy:
    • One of the Seinfeldian Conversations 1-A has is about how their lives seem straight out of a Shōnen manga and wondering who is the protagonist. Opinion is split between Midoriya and Bakugo.
    • Aizawa is very much against someone saying What Could Possibly Go Wrong?, having noticed how prone the universe is about proving the questioner wrong.
  • Gratuitous French: Aoyama is prone to writing in French.
  • Heroes Gone Fishing:
    • A good part of the chat is devoted to the 1-A students making plans for having fun outside of class.
    • Most of U.A.'s teachers play an unnamed MMORPG, where they form part of the same guild.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation:
    • Played for Laughs with Ashido, Hagakure, Kaminari, and Sero, who joke about their status of being the class' dumbest students.
    • Played for Drama with Izuku, who is struggling with ten-plus years of being a pariah and then his having to learn how to use One for All without the experience.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Uraraka is not impressed with Bakugo's swearing and constantly claims to be able to do better than him.
    • Ashido is a fan of an unnamed animated historical series she takes ideas from, and takes her classmates' love lives very seriously.
    • When he joins his classmates for a guys' night out, Todoroki proves himself a prodigy in bowling - getting strikes eight times out of ten on his first time playing - and then very good at playing Hero Fighter with All Might, but only when Kaminari started to play with Endeavor.
    • When he sheds his shyness and nerves, Midoriya can be quite smooth.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: All over the place. Ashido even mentions having compersion.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Most of the story follows the same path as the manga.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Due to Adaptational Sexuality, there's some of this. Kaminari, for example, would hit on Jiro if she weren't lesbian, and Ashido knows her attraction for Kirishima will never do anything.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Yaoyorozu does this from time to time.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When the students see Aizawa's phone sending a bunch of gibberish and adding Yamada to their group, and Kyoka mentions hearing Aizawa and Yamada fighting, Iida states his belief that the teachers are professional enough to not engage in childish fighting. The immediate next message is Midnight chiding Iida for being so naïve, and the next one is Yamada cheerfully stating that Aizawa will be unable to find him in his new hideaway.
  • Loophole Abuse: Iida, of all people, exploits one when he tells Sako Keiji that the law forbids him from using his Quirk without a license - but his Quirk is solely centered in his legs. Cue Sako suffering from a broken nose.
  • Mundane Utility:
    • One of Asui's comments makes Jiro wonder if she's been subconsciously using her Quirk to win at Rock–Paper–Scissors.
  • No Hero to His Valet: All Might may be Japan's Number One Hero and Symbol of Peace, but the U.A. teachers are more than willing to poke fun at him, and Recovery Girl is not afraid to call him out when he screws up.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: When Uraraka reaches the end of her patience towards Bakugo and his constant disparaging of Midoriya, she challenges him to a fight. While the two initially use their Quirks, they get so fired up that they just start punching each other until they collapse to the ground.
  • Noodle Implements: Hagakure and Tokage's prank on Sako involves twine, twenty rubber ducks, and enough custard that it had to be compressed before putting it into the guy's locker.
  • Not Hyperbole: When Midoriya expresses interest in the techniques Uraraka has been learning from Gunhead, she jokes that he would have to be careful not to take people's wrists off when he tosses them around - and Midoriya realizes that, with his Super-Strength, it could be an actual legitimate concern.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Yaoyorozu can make good snark if triggered, and her venting about Uwabami for using the internships as unpaid labor in one of her ads is legendary.
    • Even Iida has limits to his "do not use strong words" ideal, as shown when he drops a Precision F-Strike after dealing with the second-year student Ashido had a date with.
    • Regardless of their Pro Hero status, the U.A. teachers are as prone to squabbling, laughing at, and tricking each other as the students.
    • When Torino joins the U.A. teachers chat, Recovery Girl nicknames him WarrantyVoid.
  • Oh, Crap!: The general reaction to Izuku posting where he is in the class chat - in a back street in Hosu with Stain and multiple Nomus loose.
  • Pet the Dog: The girls manage to convince Lunch Rush to make hamburgers for Kaminari for his birthday.
  • Point of Divergence: While most of the story strictly follows The Stations of the Canon, there are a few events that happen differently.
    • Mineta and Kaminari's attempt to trick the 1-A girls into wearing cheerleader costumes backfires when Jiro sends a message to ask Aizawa about it - and Aizawa forces the two boys to put on cheerleader costumes of their own.
    • Gunhead being sent to Hosu to help deal with the post-attack trouble causes Uraraka to find her friends in the hospital and triggers her Relationship Upgrade with Midoriya.
    • The "hole-in-the-wall" that in canon led to Mineta attempting to perv on the girls, only to get his eye jacked by Jiro, instead ends with Mineta blocking the hole with a hairball.
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • Aizawa drops a "Son of a bitch" in the 1-A chat when he realizes that Midoriya was a "late bloomer", thus explaining his lack of control over his Quirk.
      • He later says "Fuck" when Nezu indicates he can't locate a functional camera near the place where Midoriya is fighting Stain, and another "Son of a bitch" when a video with Stain ranting about heroes features Midoriya.
    • Momo makes two in a row when venting about Uwabami.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Downplayed - Shoji mentions that Innsmouth (the villain Asui encountered in her internship with Selkie) is a distant cousin of his.
  • Running Gag:
    • Iida attempting to lecture the others on what should be appropriate behavior for U.A. students.
    • Kirishima stating something or someone is "manly", even if it is one of the girls.
    • The students lampshading the fact that they are using the chat when they could be speaking.
    • Aizawa using Sideshow Bob's Rake Take animation every time he needs to express his despair over being Surrounded by Idiots.
    • People saying "You don't have to say that" or similar phrases.
    • Aizawa making Side Bets with Vlad King - and winning.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Most of 1-A, Inko and Mitsuki are Green Tea (Midoriya/Uraraka) shippers, particularly the girls. Ashido and Inko also support Asui/Midoriya/Uraraka.
    • Kaminari is all for Jiro/Yaoyorozu, encouraging his friend to be more forward and boosting her confidence.
    • Mitsuki supports Bakugo/Kirishima.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sleep Cute:
    • Midoriya and Uraraka tend to end up cuddling with each other, her head on his chest, if they fall asleep close to each other - and there's always someone nearby ready to take a photo of them.
    • Sero takes a photo of Yaoyorozu giving a Lap Pillow to a sleeping Jiro. Judging by some of Yaoyorozu's commentaries, they also like to cuddle, and her mother loves it.
  • Stunned Silence: 1-A's reaction when Iida drops a Precision F-Strike.
  • True Companions: 1-A, after all they've gone through, is willing to do a lot for each other. For example, when Ashido dates a second-year student, only for him to clearly disrespect her, Hagakure enlists Setsuna to set up a prank in his locker, and Iida goes to tell the guy off. Then the guy makes a very nasty comment about Ashido. Iida promptly breaks his nose, Midoriya and Uraraka punch him in the gut so hard he pukes his lunch, Bakugo is all too ready to explode the guy, and the rest of the class is disappointed that the teachers came too soon either because they wanted to see the boy getting pummeled or because they wanted to pummel him themselves.
  • Tsundere: Mitsuki outright states her son Bakugo is one for Kirishima.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Uraraka towards Midoriya. When Bakugo goes too far in his insults, she requests Aizawa for hand-to-hand fighting sparring so she can have the excuse to pummel Bakugo, and when Ashido becomes too intense in her teasing, she warns her to back off.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Kaminari and Jiro.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: Variation. After Ingenium's crippling, Iida stops using the chat, causing the others to miss his interventions. After Stain's capture, Iida apologizes for his behavior, only for Ashido to deliberately goad him into starting one of his rants on what should be U.A. students' appropriate behavior, cheering when she succeeds.
