Fanfic / Fate: Kill

Go To

Najenda: What is it that you see in those bronze-coloured eyes that seem to stare beyond the present circumstances?
Shirou: I see hope. Beyond the corruption and lies of those in power in the Empire, Revolutionary Army, or Wakoku, it will be the people that matter in the end. The one concept that will always hold true is the pursuit to happiness, and all evil will one day meet justice regardless of present circumstances.

Fate: Kill is a crossover fanfic between Fate/stay night and Akame ga Kill! by Parcasious, author of The Vasto of White and Fate-In Time.

In this story, Shirou Emiya is reborn as the son of a retired imperial general who founded a small village called Calla, before inevitably passing away and leaving the position as leader to his son, whose reputation as a "miracle healer" begins to attract attention. Before long, Shirou's mysterious powers and obsession with helping anyone in need turns the village into an ever-expanding haven for the oppressed and those who seek to wash away the sins of their past. But it's also not long before outsiders regard this utopia with envious eyes, and slowly, and surely, Shirou and his ever-growing army of supporters—many of whom would not mind if he sat on the imperial throne—will have to fight to protect it.

Completed at 52 chapters (the 53th is just an Author's Note), it can be read here. AO3 link, but this one is not updated regularly. A sequel is in the works.

The author has also released A Different Kind of War, a Massive Multiplayer Crossover of many of their fics where the casts of each fic plus the cast of the original Fate/stay night are gathered and go to war in a Singularity.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Abled in the Adaptation: Shirou restores Najenda's missing eye and arm, then traces a copy of Pumpkin for her.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Esdeath is mentioned to have only tolerated Honest for as long as she has, aside from him providing ample reasons for her to be out fighting and killing, because she respected the former emperor's choice to make him Prime Minister as he himself was a capable leader before his murder, something that was never mentioned or implied in canon. The story also implies that she's less evil than she really was, labelling her alignment color as "grey" (as her main interest is in sating her Blood Knight and Social Darwinist tendencies no matter who or what gets in her way, and she's completely honest in her feelings for Shirou despite how their respective ideals clash) when the manga explicitly spelled out that she was a total psychopath whose supposed redeeming qualities were a case of Pragmatic Villainy at best.
  • Agony of the Feet: Akame gets injured in battle and later wakes up in bed. When Selka and Elaine imply Shirou was injured, Akame frantically jumps out of bed and runs around town looking for him, forgetting to put her shoes on (or any other clothes besides the hospital gown she woke up in). By the time she finds Shirou, her feet are dirty and have blisters. Fortunately, Shirou quickly heals her.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules:
    • The super strong Selka becomes more and more attracted to Shirou whenever he does something powerful like using Ig-Alima, the Mountain Felling Sword or hurling a mook across a field.
    • Esdeath is also attracted to Shirou for his strength.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Selka is described as this, with a well-sculpted body that still looks gorgeous.
  • Any Last Words?: Syura asks this of Shirou while strangling him. Shirou gasps, "My body is made out of swords!" and fatally impales him with swords coming out of his wounds.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil:
    • Prime Minister Honest and his clique are as wretched as ever, wanting to conquer Calla in order to plunder its supposed wealth and enslave the inhabitants.
    • The tribal leaders of Wakoku, minus the ones who seek refuge in Calla, are a bunch of petty, self-important assholes.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: When Shirou spells out his plans for the Empire to Esdeath, she playfully asks why he would say such things to an imperial general. He responds by pointing out that he's a rival claimant to the throne, and she sheepishly admits that he has a point.
  • An Arm and a Leg:
    • Shirou cuts off Syura's arm, then Mine shoots off his legs. Surprisingly, this isn't enough to kill him, only to retreat.
    • Shirou manages to slice off Shikoutazer's arms, but burns out of magical energy as a result. However, while the narration notes being non-living means the Teigu won't die from something like that, within said arms are extra power sources to keep the massive mecha running, plus the giant's center of gravity has been compromised. As a result, Emperor Makoto quickly struggles to just keep his rapidly weakening ultimate weapon standing upright, especially once Night Raid starts deliberately attempting to trip it up.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: When Leone in both anger and despair demands Akame to tell her why she's willing to stand against her revealing any info about Shirou to the Revolutionary Army to the point of getting absolutely demolished and beaten black and blue in hand-to-hand, Akame's answer stops her cold because it encapsulates everything Leone herself has been struggling to believe about Calla.
'"Because I saw a future! Don't tell me that you didn't see it! You've seen what kind of place Calla is! Enough with the lies Leone! I saw a future without corruption, without hate, nor despair, and you're asking me why I stand opposed?"
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Honest convinces Makoto to use Shikoutazer after Shirou's forces take the capitol, playing on the fear they will attempt to kill him.
  • Attempted Rape: When Akame and Shirou are incapacitated by injuries and exhaustion, Enshin tries to rape Akame. Wave attacks him, Kurome helps Wave, then Shirou recovers enough to kill him. Of course, this was All According to Plan by Syura, who wanted Shirou to expend himself and use any remaining tricks before making his own move to kill him.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Ig-Alima, the Mountain Felling Sword, is one of Shirou's most powerful weapons and can easily destroy fortresses or really huge Danger Beasts. However, since it is so huge, he can't exactly wield it, and it costs so much mana to make that he can only make it once per battle. The only way he can use it is to materialize it in the sky and make it fall on his target. Then, since he can't pick it up, all he can do is make it disappear.
  • Best Her to Bed Her: While All Amazons Want Hercules is already in effect, Shirou quickly realizes that the only way he'll be able to "tame" Esdeath and sway her to his ideals is if he can prove himself without a doubt dominant over her. It culminates in him and her fighting to the death with his victory, and her apparent survival and rumored desire to join the Queen's Blade tournament if she has indeed at the end of the fic seems to suggest it worked.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Shirou has just enough resistance to the Mahapadma, coupled with the foresight to reinforce his body, to parry Esdeath's strike while it is active to avoid dying.
  • Big Badass Battle Sequence: The battle of the Kalance Plains is shaping up to be one, with three armies, each with their own groups of badasses, square off for control of the Empire.
  • Big Damn Hero:
    • Shirou saves Akame from being overwhelmed by hostile Wakokan troops.
    • Budo saves Akame from Honest in Chapter 49.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Akame finally kisses Shirou in the final chapter.
  • Black-and-Gray Morality: Both the Empire and the Revolutionary Army want to conquer Calla for their own reasons, and the only thing keeping the latter in the Gray area is the fact that the former is pitch-black.
  • Blood Knight: Esdeath, natch. She doesn't say anything in Chapter 29, but Shirou can sense the bloodlust rolling off of her just by looking at her.
  • Body-Count Competition: A one-sided example. Akame becomes obsessed with one-uping Selka and impressing Shirou by killing more enemies than Selka. Leone eventually puts a stop to it by pointing out she is acting crazy and judging by how Shirou attempts to avoid fighting and minimize casualties, her actions would not impress him.
  • Bolt of Divine Retribution: Shirou using Hrunting to kill the lord of Hageshi is interpreted as this, as the weapon's advent is preceded by a clap of thunder. Lubbock develops a phobia of thunder after seeing this, as he now can no longer tell if it's just regular thunder or Shirou using the weapon.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Selka had never tried alcohol before. When Leone challenges her and Shirou to a drinking contest, she gets drunk after one glass.
  • Cassandra Truth: Tatsumi and Ieyasu spot Shirou held captive in an Empire camp and attempt to report it, but Sayo thinks they are being idiots because she was not aware that Shirou had been captured. It takes Leone and Akame confirming it for her to believe them.
  • Cast from Lifespan: If Shirou doesn't have sufficient magical energy stored up, he can substitute his own life force for his Noble Phantasms. His usage of Excalibur to destroy the corrupted Shikoutazer after burning up all his magical energy in the previous fights by his own reckoning took several years off his life and left him in a coma and bed-ridden for the better part of a year.
  • Children Are Innocent: When Makoto learns that he has surviving relatives, he gets excited by the prospect of new playmates. Honest, on the other hand, sees their existence as a threat to his rule and wants them all dead.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • Selka has a crush on Shirou and sees Elaine and Akame as love rivals.
    • When Akame becomes attracted to Shirou, she becomes just as jealous of potential rivals.
  • The Consigliere: Elaine Bukerfield is Shirou's personal assistant, and she's all too willing to give cold-blooded orders behind his back if she thinks he stands to benefit from it.
  • Death by Childbirth: It is briefly mentioned Selka's mother died giving birth to her.
  • Democracy Is Flawed: Many members of the Revolutionary Army want to completely tear down the monarchy and establish a democracy as the new government, but multiple issues are raised with that line of thinking. Disregarding how many radicals want to kill all members of the imperial line to ensure the loyalists have no base to stand on, this is all predicated on the idea the newly-elected officials aren't more of the same corrupt figures who once stalked the imperial court, simply hiding their true faces under the veil of "revolutionaries". As the likes of Najenda and Chouri note, it simply has too much of a chance of creating multiple new Honests to deal with, and the current climate just has too many conflicting agendas and corrupt individuals seeking power by any means necessary to create the ideal stable government the Empire needs when the war ends. The solution, therefore, would be to install a new Emperor under whom a stable and just reign can ensure to purge out the corrupt elements and cultivate a new generation that can then reform the system to a proper democracy.
  • Demoted to Extra: Tatsumi, formerly a central character of his series, initially only appears in the background as one of the many refugees to Calla alongside his friends Ieyasu and Sayo. Though he briefly interacts with Night Raid, he doesn't join them, and thus doesn't obtain Incursio not that he could since Bulat lives, get into a relationship with Mine, or even attract Esdeath's attention. However, his friends' antics keep him surprisingly involved in events, especially in the battle sequences.
  • Detect Evil: At the battle of the Kalance Plains, Shirou turns Caliburn into a Broken Phantasm and shatters it. The shards turn into powder that blows over everyone and makes them glow white, black, or grey according to their alignment, letting Shirou and his allies know who to kill. This also causes mass Heel Face Turns in the Empire's ranks as in-fighting starts among them, and several Revolutionaries unwilling to stand back and watch break ranks to join Shirou's side in the fighting.
  • Die Laughing:
  • Dirty Coward: Honest values his own life above anything else. When he manages to negate Lubbock's Teigu and tries to stab Akame with a knife as she's initially trying to break her momentum, the sight of her deciding to go for a Mutual Kill anyways is enough to make him panic even as he tries to kill her before she can hit him.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: It is mentioned that the Heiwa tribe doesn't normally use weapons because they are so strong that any weapon they try to use breaks. Shirou provides them with many of his traced weapons, which are more durable than the regular kind and can survive being used by them, making them very grateful.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: When Tatsumi and Mine bump into each other, Mine tries to shoot him for accidentally touching her chest, something he isn't even aware of. Ieyasu tries to stop her, but Sayo - also a flat-chest - stops him. To add insult to injury, the collision was actually Mine's fault.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: The new world Shirou finds himself in has no mana in the air. So far, the only sources of mana he could find are Danger Beast carcasses, which disintegrate after their mana is extracted. This means Shirou has to be careful about overusing his powers and has to periodically recharge using Danger Beast body parts he collects.
  • Drunken Master: Selka is actually more dangerous drunk than she is sober, given her superhuman strength.
  • Dungeon Bypass: To get past the walls of the Capital, Shirou activities Unlimited Blade Works, sending his army and the defenders into his Reality Marble.
  • Enemy Mine: The warring states of Wakoku unite together in order to deal with the "problem" of Calla wholeheartedly accepting their War Refugees, thus depriving them of labor power, as well as lay claim to Calla's various resources.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Najenda assumes that Esdeath tortured Shirou while she held him captive, and that he won't talk about it due to PTSD. What she really did was try to seduce him.
  • Everyone Can See It: Pretty much everyone can see that Selka is attracted to Shiro, possibly even Shiro himself.
  • Evil Army: The army defending the Imperial Capital is shown (with a few exceptions) to be pitch-black when Shirou checks its moral alignment, to his utter disgust.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good:
    • All of the bad guys and the more cynical members of Night Raid cannot believe that Shirou is truly selfless and think he is running some kind of con. The latter eventually realize they misjudged Shirou and pledge allegiance to him.
    • Kurome due to her Dark and Troubled Past and various coping mechanisms she takes to deal with it, including various drugs, plus her fear of what Honest will do if she fails cannot for the life of her bring herself to believe it's possible to rebel against the Empire or that Shirou is truly benevolent. She also can't comprehend why Akame is intentionally pulling her punches in their showdown by refusing to go for killing blows and resorting to striking with her fists, thinking that her sister's mocking her rather than wanting to save her. She even breaks down in the midst of a drug withdrawal that she thinks Wave is secretly trying to manipulate her. She finally wises up in the penultimate chapter.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Syura is left in disbelief that Shirou is deflecting all the gun and cannon fire he's throwing at him without a single one getting through to hit civilians behind him, all while Wave and Kurome nearby are looking more and more ready to run for their lives the longer it goes on. Syura then angrily asks himself how they can be so afraid of one man who just got finished fighting Esdeath and should be running on fumes by now, only to then realize what he just said and realize just how out of his league he really is if this is what Shirou can do on his last legs.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite how revealing her normal dress is, Leone does think there's such a thing as exposing too much skin. When forced into the normal dress of the Heiwa tribe she feels practically naked.
  • False Flag Operation: Honest decides to discredit Shirou by ordering civilians massacred and blaming Shirou for it. While this does prevent any mass civil uprising in the Capital aiding Shirou's forces, it still doesn't turn the tide in the Imperial Army's favor, and after the war Shirou's forces suppress the masses clamoring for his head over the atrocities attributed to him.
  • Fastball Special: Bulat and some Heiwa members are strong enough to hurl allies across the battlefield.
  • Forgot About His Powers: When Elaine hands Shirou an Empire Emblem, he is confused and does not understand what is so special about it. He does not use Structural Analysis, his spell that shows him the history and physical properties of an item.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Kurome briefly does one to Wave after they're trapped in Shirou's Unlimited Blade Works by reminding him of their mission as Jaegers to eliminate the enemy commanders, though it's just as much to psych herself up after she lost her cool witnessing such a feat. Wave recognizes this but does as she says to assure her as well. Later on, Wave has to give a gentle version to Kurome herself combined with a Cooldown Hug after they escape the resulting slaughter of the imperial army when the Reality Marble goes down.
  • Give a Man a Fish...: Shirou remembered something his old friend Rin Tohsaka said that made him realize fighting only helps people in the short term. So he arranges for everyone in Calla to be taught how to take care of themselves.
  • God Guise: Shirou eventually uses Excalibur Morgan and its pitch black Sword Beams. The witnesses believe he is an avatar of the God of Darkness.
  • Healing Hands: Shirou has an unnamed Mystic Code that allows him to heal others.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • Akame is sent to infiltrate Calla in order to kill a retired general, but she falls in love with the town and can't bring herself to cause any harm to it. Leone is then sent to check on her after she fails to send any reports, only to become just as fanatically devoted to preserving Calla once she sees how charitable and caring everyone is. In Chapter 19, the rest of Night Raid swear allegiance to Shirou, as well.
    • Downplayed by Liver in Chapter 30, as while seeing Caliburn's brilliant light and Detect Evil does reignite faith in his old shattered ideals and makes him truly believe Shirou is worthy, he refuses to abandon Esdeath's side. He does, however, act in the hopes he can solve any Conflicting Loyalty by pairing the two together, and he doesn't fight the heroes nearly as hard or fanatically as he could otherwise.
    • Seryu is set up to make one at the end of Chapter 45 and does so in the following chapter.
    • Kurome was teetering on the edge of this for some time amongst her Villainous Breakdown and Villainous BSoD, but she finally falls over for good in Chapter 51 where she joins Wave in protecting Shirou and Akame from Wild Hunt. This would also count for her companion too, but he really wasn't much of a Heel in the first place.
  • Heel Realization: Seeing Shirou defend a bunch of civilians (and her) from a hail of bullets is enough to convince Seryu that he isn't evil, which leads to her giving up the chance to attack him and instead taking the civilians to safety.
  • He Knows Too Much:
  • Hope Bringer: Shirou fills everybody with hope when he unleashes the holy light of Caliburn and blocks attacks with Rho Aias.
  • How Is That Even Possible?: This is the general reaction everyone has whenever Shirou uses his powers. For example, when he uses Reinforcement on everybody's clothes, and Akame demonstrates her sword cannot penetrate them, everyone is stunned and asking how he did that.
  • I Gave My Word: While infiltrating a Wakoku meeting, Leone captures and interrogates a guard, promising to let him live if he talks. He talks, then Leone knocks him out. Akame attempts to kill him, but Leone stops her, saying that keeping their word is what separates them from the scum of the Empire.
  • Informed Attribute: Raiga and his men are labelled as "mountain bandits", but they conduct their missions too professionally to be mere bandits. It turns out that they belong to the Imperial First Legion, which dissolved itself when Honest came to power out of contempt for him.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Selka only wears the bear minimum needed to cover her privates, and is confused when others ask her to put on something less revealing.
  • Interplay of Sex and Violence: Esdeath effectively views any possible romantic relationship this way. As it turns out, her tribe, the Parthas Clan, had this baked right into its courtship rituals. Her fights with Shirou therefore are played out like an elaborate courtship that involves violence and possible death.
  • Intimidation Demonstration: When assaulting the headquarters of Wakoku's tribal leaders, Shirou cuts a bloody swath through their guards using Excalibur Morgan—while also Reinforcing his clothes and skin to make their weapons fail to damage him—until the quivering nobles are completely defenseless. He then fixes them with an arctic gaze and simply says, "Yield." They do.
  • Kill It with Fire: Shirou encloses Esdeath inside an artificial sun created from the Broken Phantasm of Excalibur Galatine, which ultimately incinerates her, though the final chapter implies she did survive the aftermath.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: In the battle of the Kalance Plains, Ieyasu recklessly runs deep into the enemy lines. Tatsumi is forced to follow him to stop him from getting killed and calls him a moron.
  • Love Epiphany: Akame finally realizes she loves Shirou by comparing how she feels about him with how she feels about her sister, Kurome.
  • Magnetic Hero: Shirou isn't a master orator, but he exudes a subtle, comforting type of charisma that makes others borderline worship him.
  • Marshmallow Hell: Leone does this by accident to Shirou after bumping into him while she's distracted trying to come to terms with the very existence of Calla and the two of them falling to the ground with her on top. This quickly makes Selka jealous.
  • Master Actor: In chapter 34, Shirou masterfully strings Esdeath along by giving her the idea that he could easily escape from her grasp, but has decided to stick around because he wants to test her strength. She decides the best way to do that would be wiping out the Revolutionary Army by herself, which will, unbeknownst to her, give Shirou ample time to concoct an escape plan as well as see how she fights.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Shirou helps Lubbock walk when he is injured and Lubbock becomes really grateful. Their interaction looks really gay to everyone and Selka and Akame become jealous of Lubbock.
  • Money Is Not Power: Shirou confronts Bach, who commits the atrocity of selling girls into slavery to people who enjoy torturing and killing girls. Bach tries to offer money to be left alone, and is shocked when Shirou points out his crimes cannot be paid for with mere money.
  • Mugged for Disguise: Kurome and Wave kill some Calla soldiers for their uniforms and try to infiltrate their division of the rebel army while in Unlimited Blade Works. They get found out immediately since everyone in Calla knows each other, so they know the two don't belong, and the only reason things don't get really ugly is thanks to Seryu showing up to rescue them.
  • Mutilation Conga: Honest is subjected to a well-deserved one in Chapters 49 and 50, first by getting their hands and feet shattered by Budo, then getting their limbs shot off by Najenda, who follows this up by brutally removing their eyes, ears, and tongue before tossing them off a cliff and blowing up a section of it to hurry them under.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: General Budo swore an oath to protect the imperial line. Whatever grievances about the Empire's current mismanagement thanks to Honest he shares with the Revolutionary Army, they aren't enough to convince Budo to turn traitor against the young Emperor Makoto, especially since he knows they would gladly kill the Emperor or at bare minimum strip him of power after winning. Hence, he views Honest and his ilk, who are intent on using the Emperor to achieve their desires but not to dispose of him, as the Lesser of Two Evils. Shirou joining the war and being revealed as connected to the Imperial line provides him a third option: allowing Shirou to win and become the Emperor means the line is preserved and he would likely spare Makoto from death, thus fulfilling Budo's oath to the family, and he would then take care of Honest and his cronies, thus removing the corruption.
  • Mythology Gag: Much like in the AGK canon, Akame rescues Tatsumi from a sticky situation and convinces him to go with a specific group. Though in this case, Tatsumi was planning on going to Calla anyway—Akame just made sure his journey didn't end in failure.
  • No Kill like Overkill: Esdeath is so powerful and insane that Shirou has to trap her inside of, and incinerate her with, a miniature sun in order to finally kill her. And the final chapter hints even that might not have been enough; granted, Liver was apparently on-scene...
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Out of the Heiwa tribe, Selka is considered one of the weakest members. Outside it, she is one of the strongest people in the world, with only people like Shirou, Leone, and Bulat able to rival her.
  • The Nose Knows: Nyau is sent by Esdeath to infiltrate Calla and learn what's up. Shirou quickly discovers him due to sensing the Teigu he is carrying and the stench of blood surrounding him.
  • No-Sell: Downplayed. Poison can affect Shirou, but his Healing Factor can prevent it from killing him.
  • Not Quite Dead: The final chapter implies that Esdeath might be alive. It's noted to be speculation, but considering that Liver, the most ardent Esdeath x Shirou supporter, seems far too enthused about things, plus he spent much of the aftermath of that fight dousing whatever was left of Esdeath with his Teigu and thus would be the most likely to know of her condition, it's not impossible to rule out.
  • Not So Invincible After All: While Shirou's allies have repeatedly drilled home that he's not invincible despite his incredible power and that he should rely on others more, and they've even seen him in various states of collapse after overusing his Magecraft, he's nonetheless built up an illusion of invincibility since never once have they seen him bleed or be obviously injured. When Shirou admits during the Final Battle after using Unlimited Blade Works and facing Esdeath that he's running on empty for his reserves, none of Night Raid quite realizes how serious he is until he throws himself into a gunfire and cannon barrage to protect Seryu and several citizens who survived Syura bombing the slums to kill him and he gets noticeably blooded and injured since he lacks the power to rely on Tracing a healing Mystic Code or Reinforce his body beyond bare minimum.
  • Oblivious to Love: Shirou does not notice that Selka and Akame have crushes on him and gets confused whenever they act awkward around him. He comments that even in his previous life, he never really understood girls. Later, Selka directly asks him to marry her if they survive the final battle. He says he will think about it, and Akame becomes depressed, but he does not understand why. In fairness, Akame herself doesn't realize why.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Esdeath sends her agent Nyau to infiltrate Calla. When he sees the super strong Heiwans all wielding Shirou's weapons, he is horrified, thinking they are Teigu.
    • Kurome nearly has a panic attack when she is sent into Unlimited Blade Works and she sees how powerful Shirou truly is. Wave manages to calm her down.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Sayo will never let Ieyasu live down the time he mistook a rabbit for a Danger Beast.
  • One-Man Army: Both Shirou and Esdeath at their best could easily wipe out entire armies on their lonesome. Shirou inadvertently goads Esdeath into going after the Revolutionaries by citing the fact that he hasn't seen her defeat an army single-handedly while he's proven his capacity to do so as a reason why she's weaker than him. During the Final Battle, Kurome witnessing the two of them about to clash after Esdeath protects the Imperial Army from the initial Storm of Blades from Unlimited Blade Works with ice walls comparable to castle fortifications and Shirou destroys them with two BFSes capable of shattering mountains and melting glaciers has her wonder if the only point of their respective armies is just collateral damage.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield:
    • Only someone with royal blood can touch an emblem of the Empire. Anyone else who tries gets burned. Shirou was given one by Elaine but he does not notice anything significant about it. Nyau burns his hand when he tries to pick it up.
    • When Shirou gets captured by Esdeath's forces, none of them can pick up his sword Caliburn. Esdeath manages to get around this by covering it with a layer of ice so she isn't touching it directly.
    • Inside Unlimited Blade Works, Kurome tries to examine Balmung, but it burns through her glove and into her hand, though she doesn't flinch from the pain. Other members of Esdeath's forces are similarly rejected by the Noble Phantasms, and even the few who do manage to touch them without getting burned can't actually use them.
  • Original Character: There are a few characters in Callan that don't exist in canon, such as Selka, Elaine, and Raiko.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Shirou's magecraft is this. The closest thing to it in the world are the Teigu, and they pale in comparison to what Shirou can do.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: When Lubbock sees a fully restored Najenda, he assumes he's dreaming and proceeds to glomp and grope her, loudly proclaiming his love for her. A flustered Najenda beats the tar out of him.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: The Heiwa tribe only wears thin fur loincloths for both sexes and bandeaus for the girls, along with Danger Beast bone jewelry. Everyone else pleads for them to cover up, but they get confused and say the important parts are covered up. Shirou eventually gets Selka to put on his jacket, which is Reinforced and acts as armor; she only agrees because it is his jacket.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Not exactly, but it does lead to a rapid bit of plot advancement. When Shirou decides to go to war with Wakoku in order to rescue Akame and stop the Wakokan tribes from enslaving refugees who are attempting to seek asylum in Calla, his inner circle assume he has decided to go to war with the Empire and tell him that he is descended from the first emperor, much to his surprise. By the time the misunderstanding is cleared up, there's no going back.
  • Power Misidentification: Though Akame understands that Shirou has magical powers, she thinks the secret of his abilities is that his family rediscovered the lost art of creating Teigu, with his usage of Danger Beasts bones being as the raw materials for the weapons themselves rather than sources of magical energy to absorb and fuel his abilities. Whenever he makes a Noble Phantasm, everybody thinks it is a Teigu.
  • The Power of Acting: Leone rescues Chouri and Spear from the Three Beasts by pretending Shirou is hidden and prepared to snipe them. In reality, he is not present, but she is so convincing that they retreat. It helps that Nyau is scared shitless of even the possibility that Shirou could be nearby and doesn't want to take the chance.
  • Psycho Serum: The drugs Kurome takes and are fatally dependent on boost her physical abilities and also dull her emotions, which thanks to her damaged mental state caused from her various traumas only compounds her issues. They also cause her alignment color to shift more and more to the black while under their effects.
  • Reincarnation: Back in the Fate/stay night world, Shirou was eventually framed for war crimes and executed, only for him to be born in the Akame ga Kill world with his skills and memories intact.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: At different points, Akame and Leone are made to wear the outfits the women of the Heiwa tribe wear. They get really embarrassed, with Leone commenting it's even skimpier than her usual outfit.
  • Rightful King Returns: Shirou has a claim to the imperial throne, and his copious amount of supporters eventually convince him to fight for it.
  • Sanity Slippage: Honest was never sane to begin with, but the end of Chapter 28 shows that he's slowly beginning to lose it as Shirou makes his presence publicly known. By the end of the story, he's fully willing to destroy the entire Empire just to spite Shirou and the rebellion.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!:
    • Bach tries to bribe Shirou into looking the other way from his brutal crimes. Shirou is having none of it.
    • Esdeath falls for Shirou, and is all too willing to put him on the imperial throne with herself as his empress. Shirou is strongly tempted, as having her support would allow him to save a lot of lives in the short run, but her Social Darwinist mindset disgusts him so thoroughly that he refuses.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • After experiencing Unlimited Blade Works once, Kurome and Wave run away when they hear Shirou say, "I am the bone of my sword" again, with their plan (or Wave's plan at least while Kurome just wants to get away no matter what) being to run out to the coast and lay low for the next few weeks or even months before checking back on the situation. Syura teleports away after he loses his limbs though he comes back for a final try on Shirou's life. Meanwhile, as the army of Calla advances, Honest tries to flee the capital and get the Emperor to activate Shikoutazer.
    • In the end, after Syura's death, Izou and Champ decide to cut their losses and run from their fight with Wave and Kurome, becoming wanted fugitives.
  • Secret-Keeper: Shirou's father informed Calla's inhabitants that he is descended from the second son of the first emperor, and instructed them not to tell him about it unless he expressed a desire to make a bid for the imperial throne.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • The rest of the Heiwa tribe constantly encourage Selka to make Shirou her man.
    • Leone is really amused and encourages Akame when she notices Akame has feelings for Shirou.
    • Liver wants Shirou and Esdeath together. Chapter 44 kills that hope, though Chapter 52 hints he might be trying again with a Not Quite Dead Esdeath.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Raiko at one point accuses the Heiwa of being no different from the other Wakoku tribes due to bringing in refugees of political importance. While Selka is briefly stunned by this accusation, she does fire back that even if that is the case, the Heiwa have never deliberately started any violent conflicts, so it doesn't matter in the end. Raiko has no comeback for this.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Tatsumi is Demoted to Extra, but an off-hand comment from him after he and his friends reach Calla leads to Shirou going to war with Wakoku and deciding to make a bid for the imperial throne.
  • Social Darwinist: Esdeath, as per canon. This mindset keeps her from surrendering even when Shirou has her at his mercy.
  • So Much for Stealth: Some Calla forces use a smoke screen to sneak up on Kurome's zombies, but Ieyasu screams, "For the village!", which gives away their position. Sayo smacks him for his stupidity.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Akame saving Tatsumi and his friends from Wakokan slavers eventually leads to Shirou piecing together her location, thus allowing him and the army he brought with him to save her when she is nearly overwhelmed by a Wakokan army after she breaks cover to stop them from executing helpless slaves.
    • Shirou becomes this to the whole Empire-Revolutionary conflict once he plants his flag as a contender for rulership by virtue of being descended from the imperial lineage, yet still not officially affiliated with either side. This blindsides Honest, who relies on keeping the naive Child Emperor in his pocket to hold onto power, and the leaders of the Revolutionaries, who have been clamoring to kill the Emperor and establish a new government with themselves in power, on the grounds that a legitimate and more alarmingly competent leader has suddenly emerged and has grounds to be accepted.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Tatsumi's two friends, Sayo and Ieyasu, are alive and well.
    • Shirou and Selka intervene when Bach sold Fal, Luna, and Air to the men who killed them in canon.
    • Leone prevents the Three Beasts from killing Chouri and Spear. Ironically enough, the Three Beasts themselves survive through the final battle as well instead of dying fighting Bulat and Tatsumi.
    • Budo choses to accept Shirou's claim to the throne and aids Night Raid in stopping Honest and protecting the Child Emperor rather than fight and die against Mine.
    • After the final battle, the Child Emperor is given refuge in Calla instead of being executed.
    • By the final battle, Night Raid and the Jaegers have taken no known casualties except for Esdeath, and even that one might not have stuck.
    • Of Wild Hunt, only Enshin and Syura are confirmed to have been killed. Izou and Champ ran off before Wave and Kurome could kill them — being more focused on helping Akame and Shirou back to the Capital — and are now wanted fugitives; meanwhile, Cosmina and Dorothea suffered an Uncertain Doom.
  • Spiteful Spit: When Akame becomes depressed due to Shirou saying he will consider marrying Selka, Leone angrily spits in his direction. He has no idea why she did that and moves on.
  • Straight for the Commander: It's pointed out multiple times that the biggest weakness of any army is its commander, much like how aiming for the head of a Danger Beast is a much quicker way of ending things than targeting the body.
  • Succession Crisis: When Shirou joins the war after it's revealed he's related to the Imperial line, it transforms the conflict into this. Before Honest could label the revolutionaries as nothing but dangerous rebels seeking to undermine and kill the Emperor, but now that Shirou is a definite candidate to the line of succession and not directly affiliated with the Revolutionary Army, this entire affair has become one of a question of which heir is the most qualified to rule. Even within the Empire many on the fence about the current rulership and the goals of the revolutionaries would balk at murdering Shirou outright, including the Emperor who's ecstatic at the idea of meeting surviving kin and wouldn't mind straight up abdicating to him considering all the good he's done for Calla.
  • Superpower Lottery: Shirou can create Weapons of Mass Destruction, heal wounds, cure illnesses, make copies of WOMD that already exist, turn regular clothes into bulletproof armor, and is a Supreme Chef.
  • Super-Strength: Selka and the rest of the Heiwa tribe are incredibly strong, able to break stone and lift Danger Beasts by themselves. Shirou is able to perform similar feats when he uses Reinforcement on himself.
  • Take a Third Option: River knows that Shirou is the leader that the Empire deserves, but he's too loyal to Esdeath to defect outright. He figures the best way to solve the problem is by pushing them together. Esdeath is on board with it, Shirou is reluctant.
  • Taking the Bullet: Selka saves Akame from being hit by a spear but gets impaled herself. She survives, but is in bad shape.
  • Taking You with Me: Honest tries to pull this in Chapter 50 after realizing that their defeat and death is inevitable, forcibly activating Shitokaizer's modifications to force the Emperor to go berserk.
  • Tempting Fate: Budo nearly convinces Shirou to stand down and let Night Raid take care of Honest since, with Esdeath defeated and Budo himself unwilling to attack a member of the royal family, there's no one and nothing left of a sufficient threat level to warrant Shirou getting involved and worsening his exhausted and injured condition. Cue Shikoutazer rising up.
  • Token Good Teammate: Wave, not just for the Jaegers but most of the Empire's military, especially post-Kalance Plains. When Shirou uses the 'Light of Selection' to check the imperial army's moral alignment during the Final Battle, Wave is the only one mentioned whose light burns a bright white where the rest are black or at best varying shades of grey. It's such that several fighters on Shirou's side hesitate to attack a fleeing Wave carrying Kurome because of said white light.
  • Tournament Arc: The fic ends with Shirou's many suitors arranging a tournament called Queen's Blade to determine who will marry him.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Najenda repeatedly underestimates just how powerful and experienced Shirou is. Each time he proves her wrong, and each time this increases her opinion of him.
  • Undressing the Unconscious: When Akame is injured and passes out, Selka and Elaine remove her bloody clothes and put her in a hospital gown.
  • Undying Loyalty: Akame becomes so fanatically obsessed with protecting Calla that she comes to blows with Leone when the latter tries to send information on the town and its leader to the Revolutionary Army, though she draws the line at using Murasame and only uses unarmed combat. Leone wins the fight, but Akame convinces her to keep several important secrets.
  • Uncertain Doom: Cosmina and Dorothea were part of the imperial army force that was drawn into Shirou's Unlimited Blade Works, which in turn was decimated by the Storm of Blades and the rebel army, but 'Chapter 47: Interlude' reveals that at least Dorothea survived the destruction and engaged the rebel forces afterwards. However, their fates post the final battle are left unclear. Syura and the rest of Wild Hunt lost contact with them after the Reality Marble went up, but the utter chaos of the aftermath meant they didn't have the time or care to search for them, leaving them absent and unaccounted for the final confrontation with Shirou, Akame, Wave and Kurome.
  • Utopia: Calla. It has many modern perks, such as a welfare system, retirement benefits for veterans, and helping the unemployed find jobs. It even has common houses for those who can't afford private homes. Oh, and its leader is a selfless "miracle healer" who puts everything and everyone before himself.
  • Villain Ball: Syura has an all-but-spent Shirou dead to rights at the very end with a dagger to his throat, but his sadism and anger at his earlier crippling causes him to forgo just finishing off Shirou for stabbing him under the kneecaps and then choking the life out of him slowly so he can hear him beg. This gives Shirou enough time to Project a blade out of his own body to fatally impale Syura.
  • Villainous Crush: Esdeath falls for Shirou at the end of Chapter 32.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Several merchants refuse to trade with Calla, thinking that their policy of helping the poor makes them weak-minded fools.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: One of the biggest disadvantages that Wakoku suffers in its attempted conquest of Calla is that its tribal leaders keep butting heads with each other.
  • We Can Rule Together: Esdeath would gladly put Shirou on the Imperial Throne in exchange for his hand in marriage, but their worldviews are so contradictory that he refuses.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Akame clearly has a crush on Shirou, but due to her traumatic childhood and lack of education on matters of the heart, gets confused on why she reacts the way she does around him. At one point, when Esdeath abducts Shirou, she outright asks Najenda how does she stop her heart from "hurting". It's not until she fights with and resolves to save her sister Kurome that she finally realizes that it's love by comparing those feelings to what she feels for Shirou.
  • What the Hell Are You?: One of the Wakoku leaders asks this to Shirou after seeing his powers.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The only reason Enshin manages to beat Akame during the final battle is because she's running on fumes from all the fighting she's done up to that point, particularly from the stab wound caused by Kurome, while he's fully fresh. It does not save him from Shirou, who's in an even worse state, when he tears him in half with a Strike Air.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Shirou feigns fatigue to get Nyau to approach him, then "accidentally" drops a royal emblem within the boy's line of sight, leading Nyau to realize that Shirou is of royal blood.
  • You Are Fat: The food in Calla is so good that Sayo pigs out. Ieyasu teases her by saying she is becoming fat.
