Elemental Flux is a fanfic by the author of The Best Seven Years, Blu Taiger. It is a crossover story between Calvin and Hobbes and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Calvin, Susie, and Hobbes wake up in the middle of a grassy field with no memory of how they got there. All they know is that the locals speak some language that they don't understand, Hobbes is a real tiger now, and people can shoot fire from their hands. Calvin also, for some reason, has a strange device in his pocket... how will they get home?

The story was first published in June 2012. It is complete, with a last update from 2020.

Tropes:

• Absence of Evidence: Name-dropped by Calvin when he points out that just because no one has seen a spirit, it doesn't mean that there are none, when he's trying to convince a Boiling Rock guard that the teleporter's light show was a spirit, not an Earth Kingdom secret weapon.
• Accidental Kidnapping: Ty lee gets dragged along when the trio is teleporting away from Ba Sing Se during the invasion.
• Admiring the Abomination: Calvin to the Fire Nation drill, which gets him a Death Glare from everyone else in the group.
• Animate Inanimate Object: Hobbes is now a flesh-and-blood tiger to everyone, but at the cost of his Talking Animal status and his ability to stand upright.
• A Rare Sentence: Calvin notes that he's been on the Avatar world too long if a sentence like Sokka's "my first girlfriend turned into the moon" completely fails to phase him.
• Arbitrary Skepticism: When Susie is skeptical about Calvin's alien tales, he points out that they are from another planet, which she can't really argue against.
  • Averted with Ty Lee after she gets told about them being from another world. When Calvin lampshades her acceptance, she points out that she just got transported miles from Ba Sing Se via the teleporter.
• Arch-Enemy: Azula seems to be being set up as one for the displaced Earthlings after banishing them, Calvin and Hobbes get pretty steamed when they see her battling Aang, and even Susie is hoping that he'll knock her down a peg. Then, after Susie hits her in the head by accident, she vows revenge on whoever did it. Then they accidentally kidnap Ty Lee....
• Armor-Piercing Question:
  • After Zuko rescues Azula, Susie asks Katara what she'd do if her sibling had done terrible things and then ended up in a life-threatening situation, with her in a position to save him, with Katara being unable to answer.
  • When talking to Mei again for the first time after her Heel Realization, Ty Lee asks her that, if the purpose of the war was to share the Fire Nation's greatness with the world, would there be a need for a war if the rest of the world wanted to share in that greatness? And if they don't want to share that greatness, what right do they have to force it on them?
  • Zuko saves Azula's life when her attempt to steal the teleporter at the Air Temple goes south, and when Azula demands he enact some kind of price for it, both out of hatred of the thought of being indebted to him and an honest disbelief that he'd save her if he didn't have some scheme to benefit from it instead of it just being because they're siblings, Zuko tells her that his price is that she stops hunting the Avatar, and she isn't to send anyone else after him either. When Azula asks him why he thinks that she'd agree to that, he asks her if her honor really means so little to her, which stops her in her tracks.
  • When Azula has Calvin captive as the attack on the Earth Kingdom is starting, she starts saying that she should be at her father's side, only for Calvin to point out that Ozai probably wouldn't have let her join him, pointing out that Ozai had usurped the throne from his own brother, rhetorically asking her if she's sure that he wouldn't have given her a "meaningless participation award" and left her behind, among other statements to get under her skin, which are all entirely accurate.
  • When Ty Lee wonders if Galaxoid's government would have really used the teleporter despite his intentions for military purposes, Calvin asks that she thought Azula wanted it for.

• Be Careful What You Wish For: Azula, unable to believe that Zuko would save her just because they're family, and despising the very thought of being in his debt, demands that Zuko tell her what he wants from her. Zuko uses this opprotunity to forbid her from chasing Aang anymore (or sending anyone else after him), knowing that her honor would keep her from refusing.
• Big Damn Kiss: Susie kisses Calvin after Ozai is defeated, much to his shock.
• Blatant Lies: Calvin does this when interrogated, saying his name is Jet Li and Susie's name is Lucy Liu.
• Book Ends: The story begins with Calvin, Susie and Hobbes waking up under a tree on the Avatar world and ends with them waking up under a tree back on Earth.
• Brick Joke In chapter twelve, Calvin mentions that the only thing he took from Sesame Street is that C is for Cookie. Then in chapter twenty two, Iroh ends up singing that very song after overhearing Calvin sing it in the tea shop's kitchen. In English, flabbergasting Zuko when he learns that his uncle is singing a song that he doesn't even know the meaning of the words of.
• Brought Down to Normal: Calvin and Susie lose their bending after they return to Earth.
• Bullying a Dragon:
  • Zhu and Gaan keep going after the trio despite one being an Earthbender, another a firebender, and the third a large predatory cat. They are Muggles.
  • Gaan does realize that Zuko and Iroh are way out of their league when Zhu suggests capturing them to buy back favor with the Fire Nation though, asking his friend if he wants to get burned to ashes.
• But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Susie eventually starts getting used to Calvin's brand of crazy.
• Catapult Nightmare: After Calvin sees Nebular in his dream, he jumps up shouting his name, waking Susie and Hobbes.
• Cassandra Truth: Calvin mentions that Kei's son is a military man to the gang of street kids trying to rob him as part of his Shaming the Mob speech, but it doesn't work.
  • Since Calvin isn't able to get the device to work again, Susie and Hobbes are skeptical about it being a teleporter.
  • Calvin is a bit skeptical about Susie's suspicions of Li/Zuko, mainly because her suspicions are based purely on circumstantial evidence, and tells her that she needs something more solid to convince him.
  • Jet about Zuko and Iroh, as in canon. It doesn’t help that he gets all You Have to Believe Me! after Susie binds him.

• The Gaang is a bit skeptical about Calvin and Susie being from another world.

• Comically Missing the Point When Calvin hears about how Fire Lord Sozin utilized the comet to start the war, he wonders how a ball of rock and ice can amplify fire power.
  • After witnessing the moon turn red, burn out and then come back normally, Calvin comments that they just had a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment. Susie's response:
  Susie "Since when do alligators have lips?!"
  • After the strange device Calvin found scared off the street gang that tried to rob him, one of them gets hung up over him using an unfamiliar term, "Samaritan", in his attempt at Shaming the Mob.
• Contrived Coincidence: When the group teleports into the desert on their way to Ba Sing Se, they end up next to the White Lotus flower guy, also on his way to the city. Susie lampshades the coincidence, but Calvin, while acknowledging it, isn't looking the gift horse in the mouth.
  • Calvin and Susie apply for jobs in the same tea shop Iroh and Zuko are working at.
  • Zhu and Gaan later show up to said shop, causing Calvin to lampshade how the two keep finding them. They weren't even looking for Calvin and Susie that time, and they only narrowly avoid being spotted.
  • Hobbes, out for a midnight stroll, happens to spot Appa. He later finds where Zhu and Gaan are staying.
  • After fleeing from Ba Sing Se, the group manages to wander right into Zuko's camp.
  • After Azula coincidentally runs into Izo's platoon, she has the Rough Rhinos capture them and bring them to her. When Calvin asks if Gaan and Zhu are going to show, he's genuinely surprised when they don't appear.
• Crossover Between Calvin and Hobbes and Avatar: the Last Airbender
• Curse Cut Short:
  Calvin (when the teleporter activates for the first time.) "What the he-"
  Susie (After Calvin swindles her at Rock–Paper–Scissors for a second time) "You son of a -"
• Cruel to Be Kind: Calvin knocks Susie out in order to keep her from participating in disabling the drill and risking being killed.
• Custom Uniform of Sexy: Calvin lampshades this with the uniforms of the female guards at the Boiling Rock, pointing out how it leaves several important organs undefended, something the guard he asked had wondered herself.
• Dishing Out Dirt: Susie eventually gains Earthbending.
• Disney Villain Death: The Combustion Man, though the narration makes it pretty clear that he's dead.
• Double Entendre Calvin blurts one out to Susie after rage quitting their chess match.
  Susie "Suck it up, and take it like a man!"
  Calvin' I'll take YOU like a man!!!"
• Dramatic Irony: Jet talks about his suspicions of Iroh and Zuko to Gaan, who we know is a Fire Nation deserter.
  • Azula infiltrates the Western Air Temple in an attempt to steal the teleporter. She manages to get her hands on it - only to discard it, assuming it to be a piece of junk.
• Dreaming the Truth: Calvin's dreams allow him to start putting the details of their arrival in the Avatar world together.
• Elemental Powers: As to be expected, considering what world the story mainly takes place in.
• Empowered Badass Normal: A Lion Turtle gives Calvin and Susie bending.
• Entertainingly Wrong: When escorting Ying and the rest of the refugees to the trams, the soldiers on the wall ignore Calvin and Susie because the Avatar is well known to run around with kids his own age, and assumed they were with Aang. The soldier lampshading how logical it is only makes Calvin fume more.
• Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Colonel Izo takes time to visit his mother on her birthday.
  • At the Boiling Rock, Calvin instigates the riot by saying something about one of the inmate's mother.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good Azula adamantly refuses to believe that Zuko would save her life just because she's his sister.
• Exactly What I Aimed At: Susie was trying to hit Azula's hand to make her drop Aang, but hit her in the head instead, which Calvin thought was the target.
• Exact Words: After Azula captures Calvin and Suzie, Suzie points out Azula's promise to Zuko. Azula counters by pointing out that Zuko only made her promise to stop chasing the Avatar, not the Avatar's friends.
• Facepalm: When Hobbes stumbles onto Gaan and Zhu, he's unable to communicate that he knows where they are until he thinks to write it out on the ground. Calvin's realization that it took them that long to think of using writing as a way to communicate with Hobbes prompts a simultaneous facepalm from both the tiger and the girl when they realize how stupid they were.
• Failed a Spot Check: Calvin's firebending briefly stops working at one point. In the next chapter, the day of black sun is mentioned, implying that the earthlings completely failed to notice a total solar eclipse.
• Fantastic Racism: Calvin gets some of this for being a firebender after saving Susie from Gaan and Zhu.
• Fridge Logic: In-universe:
  • Calvin wonders why a comet, made of ice and rock, would boost fire based powers.
  • At the Boiling Rock, while Calvin admits that while working in a volcano makes heat dispersion a priority, he questions a female guard about why their armor would leave a certain portion of their body with sensitive organs exposed, a design flaw the guard had wondered about herself. Later, when some of the guards are talking about seeing the light from the teleporter marking the location, Calvin is able to convince them it was spirits instead of an Earth Kingdom weapon by pointing out that it even if the Earth Kingdom had a secret weapon like that to test, it wouldn't make sense for them to come to the remote and highly secure prison to test it.
• Gilligan Cut:
  • After Calvin tells Susie about Colonel Izo's arrival at Kei's house and that they're expected to sit down to tea with him, Susie vehemently refuses. Cut to Susie with a tea cup in her hand, staring fearfully at the Colonel.
  • When Calvin asks if Sokka left some kind of excuse as to why they left on the Boiling Rock mission, Sokka says that he wrote a note with a legitimate excuse that wouldn't arouse any suspicions. Cut to Susie saying that her suspicions are aroused, since the note said they went fishing — which Calvin hates doing.
• God Guise: Calvin claims that Galaxoid and Nebular are spirits to the people of the Fire Nation to avoid any issues, although the two initially protest.
• Gone Horribly Right: Calvin tries to get Susie mad enough to start Earthbending again, but when it succeeds she's bending rocks at him, chasing after him until they collapse.
• Good Scars, Evil Scars: Susie hits Azula in the head with a rock (she was aiming for Azula's hand) while she's battling Aang, and is scarred similarly to her brother as a result, swearing revenge on whoever did it.
• HA HA HA—No Calvin reacts this way when Susie suggests bringing Ty Lee along with them.
• Heel Realization: Ty Lee has one when she sees Fire Nation mercs that Azula hired to find her tearing up a town, and hears the sheer hatred the townspeople have towards the Fire Nation.

• Heroic BSoD: Calvin experiences one after Susie tells him off for getting them banished. See "The Reason You Suck" Speech below.
• Hero Of An Other Story: When the earthlings return to Ba Sing Se in the final chapter, they learn about a rebellion that had been fighting the Fire Nation occupation. It turns out the leaders of the rebellion were Gaan and Zhu.
• Hidden Depths: Calvin actually makes pretty good cookies.
• How Do I Shot Web?: Susie has some trouble learning how to control her Earthbending after getting it.
• Human Aliens: Besides bending, the people of the Avatar planet are as human as Calvin and Susie. When Ty Lee asks if Galaxoid is from Calvin's planet too he starts to ask if that looks like the case before remembering that this trope applies.
  • Galaxoid and Nebular later reveal that there are multiple planets in the galaxy with Human Aliens. It's suggested that some alien race transplanted them there in the distant past from their original world, possibly Earth, possibly another world.
• Hypocritical Humor When trying to get Susie to earthbend, Calvin tries to invoke All Girls Like Ponies. Susie chides him for sexually stereotyping. Later, Susie makes a comment about boys and their cars. Calvin immediately calls her out on it.
• Instant Expert: Sokka's first time playing chess against Susie has him win due, in part due to his strategic mindset and experience.
• I Owe You My Life: Azula after Zuko saves her.
• Ironic Echo Cut: When Zuko, Sokka, and Calvin raid Boiling Rock Prison, Sokka lets the other two know he left a message that was sure not to arouse suspicion. What does Suzie say upon reading the note, which claims that they went fishing (which Calvin hates)?
  "My suspicions are aroused."
• I Want Grandkids: Torrin's mother keeps telling him this and trying to set him up.
• Jerkass Has a Point: After Torrin and his family kick Calvin out for having Firebending, he points out that because of the war, they have a genuine reason for their Fantastic Racism, though Susie argues that it's still not an excuse.
  • Gaan makes several points to Jet when the later tries to talk to him about his suspicions of Iroh and Zuko. He finds Jet's argument convincing but points out that the Fire Nation (or the people of any nation) aren't Always Chaotic Evil, and that he's mostly encountered soldiers that were likely mainly good people Just Following Orders. He's mainly just trying to get the fanatical Jet to stop talking to him, but that doesn't mean he isn't right.
  • Although everyone glares at Calvin when he suggests that Aang be bait for Combustion Man instead of Zuko, he points out that Aang is the guy that he's actually after, and that he can fly.
  • Calvin's comments to Azula are a bit mocking and Calvin is clearly trying to get under her skin, but his points are logical and backed up by what happened in canon.
• Just Following Orders: Gaan points out to Jet that most soldiers tend to just be doing this, even Fire Nation ones.
• Know When to Fold 'Em: Colonel Mongke, after three men from the village arrive to help Calvin and Susie. He realizes that with the rest of his men out of commission, and himself worn out from fighting the earthlings, the situation calls for a strategic retreat.
• Komodo Rhino Rampage Hobbes leads one of the Rough Rhino's mounts on a chase through Izo's camp, throwing the soldiers into disarray.
• Lampshade Hanging: Susie lampshades on how the Fire Nation has so much red.
  • Calvin points out how it doesn't make much sense that a Comet (made of rock and ice) gives a power up to fire.
• Language Barrier: Calvin and Susie are initially unable to understand the language of the Avatar world. Calvin gains the ability to speak it early on, but with Susie it takes a while longer.
  • Hobbes is still intelligent, and can still understand Calvin and Susie, but can only communicate in chuffs and growls. Hobbes and Susie both Facepalm in realization when Calvin expresses disbelief at them taking as long as they did to use writing.
  • Apparently the Translator Microbes turns off when they think they aren't needed, several occasions have had Susie and Calvin slip into English, usually when talking to each other, and they may not always be aware of that fact.
• Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When the group uses the teleporter and hops into the desert, the flower guy from the White Lotus transporting Zuko and Iroh to Ba Sing Se is right where they land, and also heading to the city. Susie is a bit suspicious of it, and compares it to lazy writing in a story, while Calvin argues that reading about the characters being lost in the desert would be boring and slow the story down.
  • In the final chapter, Calvin mentions that it feels like they've been on the Avatar's planet for eight years - the time it took for the story to be completed.
• Living Lie Detector: Toph uses her bending to determine that Calvin and Susie lied about their names.
• Loophole Abuse: Zuko made Azula promise not to hunt Aang anymore, but forgot to make sure that she couldn't go after Aang's friends, allowing her to have the Rough Rhinos capture Calvin and Susie.
• Magma Man: Susie discovers that she can lavabend near the climax of the story.
• Male Gaze: Susie goes out to take a dip, keeping her "assets" covered but removing her shirt. When Calvin's attempts at hunting ruin it, Hobbes accuses him of ogling her after she heads off.
• Marshmallow Dream Hobbes dreams that he's eating a giant swordfish - only to wake up realizing that he was chewing on Calvin's backpack.
• Mistaken for Romance: Calvin mistook Zuko and Katara leaving to find her mother's killer as a romantic rendezvous.
• Mix-and-Match Critters It is the Avatar-verse, after all.
• Most Fanfic Writers Are Girls: There are hints that Susie might be a writer, like her lampshading meeting the White Lotus Flower guy, for example.
• Mundane Utility: In Chapter eleven, Calvin has the idea that Susie can use her earthbending to turn a abandoned wagon into a pseudo-car so they can move without having to walk. He later thinks of how to expand the idea into a car business.
• Mr. Exposition: Kei.
• Near-Villain Victory: Zhu and Gaan came dangerously close to kidnapping Susie and Calvin.
• Non Sequitur, *Thud* Calvin gets one after getting hit by a rock while Susie practices earthbending.
  • "Professher Prumm, in de kitshin, wiff Dinah."
• Not Helping Your Case: When Ty Lee corrects Calvin and tells them that she's Azula's friend, not her minion, Calvin lampshades her doing this.
• Not-So-Harmless Villain: Gaan and Zhu.
• Oblivious to Love: Apparently Calvin noticed the looks Torrin was giving Susie, but not Susie herself.
• Occam's Razor: When the effect the teleporter makes when marking a new location is noticed during the Boiling Rock mission, Calvin invokes this to convince a guard that it was the work of spirits, not an Earth Kingdom weapon. He basically points out that it makes more sense for it to be spirits than the Earth Kingdom using a secret weapon on a highly defended prison far from civilization.
• Oh, Crap!: Calvin when he sees fire bending for the first time and when he hears about the hundred year war.
  • The street gang flees when the device emits a flash of blue light.
• Orphaned Punchline:

  Ty Lee "And ever since, I just couldn't stand the taste of plums..."

• Our Wormholes Are Different: FTL-capable civilizations apparent;y regularly use wormholes to make traversing interstellar distances easier. The teleporter locking onto a wormhole that would let it jump to the Avatar planet (Galaxoid and Nebular had originally planned to hide it there because it was the closest one to their own homeworld before deciding it was too obvious a choice) is what resulted in the Earth trio ending up there in the first place.
• Pass the Popcorn: When Jet does his accusation thing, Susie says that they should do something. Calvin then bites into a cookie and offers her one. He then complains when Susie immobilizes Jet.
• Playing with Fire: Calvin discovers this power when fighting to save Susie.
• Poor Communication Kills: As lampshaded by Calvin, the flower guy who guided them to the ferries at no point mentioned that they would need passports there.
• Psychoactive Powers: Calvin comes up with the idea that Susie's bending is tied to adrenaline and intense emotion, thus purposefully getting her mad in an attempt to activate it.
  • Calvin's firebending activates when he's trying to rescue Susie from Gaan and Zhu.
  • When Susie, frustrated by her captivity and how horrible Azula is being to her so-called "friends" gets frustrated and starts stomping her feet while tied up, she discovers that she can lavabend.
• Punctuated! For! Emphasis!
  Susie "WHAT. DID. YOU. DO?!"
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: Calvin and Susie respectively. Zhu and Gaan also fit.
• Refuge in Audacity: When asked where they came from, Calvin tells Colonel Izo that they were at a party. When he leaves, Izo complains that he never gets invited to parties like that!
• Revenge: The gang eventually is chased by a couple soldiers after an incident which caused the soldiers to be discharged. Susie makes the classic Atla anti-revenge comment, but they aren't phased.
  • After Azula's face is scarred by Susie's rock hitting her, she vows revenge.
• Revenge Before Reason: Zhu, a Fire Nation soldier who lost his position because of the duo, and is obsessed with getting vengeance, despite his friend Gaan being a voice of reason.
  • He even tries to attack Calvin in a crowded market, Gaan barely being able to restrain him. And even Gaan starts to delve into this more and more after the gang gets away yet again and Calvin unlocks his firebending. Looks like Aang is right.
• Rock–Paper–Scissors: Calvin and Susie do this to decide which way they would go when they come to a fork in the road while journeying through the Earth Kingdom. Susie remembers how Calvin used "Superman" in a previous game and uses Kryptonite right off the bat, but Calvin used "Wolverine" instead, so she lost.
• Roaring Rampage of Revenge The platypus-bear goes on one after Hobbes attempts to drop a large rock on him
• Shaming the Mob: Calvin tries to do this to the gang of kids that tries to rob him while getting groceries for Kei, asking what kind of person would steal from a kind old lady. Unfortunately, their leader keeps it from working, even after he mentions that Kei's son is a military man.
• Shipper on Deck Hobbes is very excited when Calvin and Susie hook up.
• Ship Sinking: Susie and Torrin, the trope almost being name dropped In-Universe.
• Shout-Out
  Colonal Izo "What is your name?"
  Calvin "My name is Sir Lancelot of Camelot; I'm on a quest to find the Holy Grail; my favorite color is blue!"

  Azula "I am the princess of the Fire Nation!"

  Calvin "Well, I didn't vote for you."
  • While Susie is describing an unusual dream she had, Calvin interrupts her, saying "And then the horns kicked in and your shoes began to squeak!" - A reference to the 2Nu song, Ponderous.
  • When Calvin is asked how he usually kills pigs, he replied "Usually by slingshotting birds at them."
  • Calvin, while out fishing, sings "They're coming to take me away" by Napoleon IV. He also mentions that he "Hates fish. Hate the taste, hate the smell, hate all them little bones."
  • Calvin introduces Hobbes to the Gaang as Poobah
  • When the Gaang goes off to fight the drill, Calvin tells them "May the Force be with you."
  • After joining Zuko in his camp:
    Susie "See, I told you (Li) was Zuko."
    Calvin "Yes, you're very smart. Now, shut up!"
  • In chapter twenty-five, Calvin shows the Gaang the 'Live Long and Prosper' sign.
  • "All was laid to BURNINATION!"
  • At one point, Susie compares Calvin to Natsu Dragneel.
  • While being interrogated by Azula, Calvin sings the chorus of R.E.M.'s The End Of The World As We Know It
  • When Ozai goes all You Meddling Kids, the Earth trio is quick to burst into laughter from the unintentional reference to a certain show.
  • As the earthlings set off for home, Calvin quips that he'll miss the scarecrow most of all.
• "Shut Up" Kiss Calvin gives one to Susie after she starts rambling while trying to downplay what happened between them on the spaceship.
• Side Bet: When Zuko and Katara went off to find the man that killed Katara's mother, Calvin and Susie bet on whether it was a romantic rendezvous or not.
  • (He lost.)
  • Colonel Mongke makes one with General Izo as to whether or not Azula would be able to break Calvin.
• Sidetracked by the Analogy: As mentioned under Comically Missing the Point, Calvin's use of the term "Samaritan" distracts the street gang that went after him.
• Smart People Play Chess: Susie is rather good at chess, as well as Hobbes and Sokka, the former managing to play Susie to a stalemate and the latter actually manages to beat her the first time he plays.
• Stable Time Loop: The Earth trio arrive back home just in time to see themselves get sent to the Avatar world, and apparently Calvin later tells Galaxoid and Nebular where they need to go to find the Earth trio.
• Super-Empowering: The two dimensionally displaced humans eventually run into a Lion-Turtle who tries to grant them bending, though only Susie manifested Dishing Out Dirt powers at first.
  • Calvin later develops Playing with Fire abilities.
• Surrounded by Idiots: Izo's behavior in chapter ten gives this impression.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech Susie tears into Calvin after the latter gets the entire group banished from the Fire Nation.
  Susie "HOW COULD YOU?! Why couldn't you keep your stupid trap SHUT?! We had a place to live, Calvin! We had food and clothing and shelter! And what do we have NOW, huh? Just the clothes on our backs and a measly tent! We've lost everything because YOU just HAD to go and make a big fuss! And for what? FOR WHAT?! Just because some HUSSIE was mean to you?! That's the ENTIRE PROBLEM! You DIDN'T THINK! You never know WHERE the line is until AFTER you've crossed it! Did you think about what consequences your actions would have on ME, or on HOBBES?! • Swiss-Cheese Security: Gaan finds it a little funny that all it took for him and Zhu to get into Ba Sing Se was a couple of fake passports when the Fire Nation has been trying to get in for years.
• Teleportation Sickness: Using the teleportation device is rather unpleasant.
• Teleporters and Transporters: The device that Calvin found transports him back to the hill where he and Susie first arrived in the Fire Nation.
  • Later, after it does another scan and expands its map, Calvin uses it to teleport to a town they were heading to in the Earth Kingdom.
• Tempting Fate: Calvin is about to lampshade Sokka doing this when Ying suddenly goes into labor.
  • Calvin wishes that something exciting would happen in the tea shop. Cue Jet.
  • General Izo says that as long as Sozin's Comet is in the sky, there is no force on earth that can stop them. Immediately after saying that, the comet explodes.
• Translator Microbes: Calvin, after a weird dream, gains the ability to speak in the Avatar world's language (apparently Japanese) as easily as he speaks English. Susie, on the other hand, is still unable to speak and understand it until much later, forcing Calvin to act as her translator.
  • After he is teleported back to the hill he started at in "Discovery", this effect is temporarily disrupted, with Calvin unable to understand himself for a short while.
  • It seems that the effect is shut off when they're talking among themselves, when the Gaang is listening in during chapter sixteen, they have no idea what they're supposed to be hearing.
• Trapped in Another World
• The Unreveal: At the end of the story, Calvin buys a rock from a guy claiming that it's a piece of Sozin's Comet, despite Susie pointing out that it could be a con, in part because he's not going to have any use for the Avatar world's money after going home. He means to have Gallaxoid and Nebular verify it, but forgets before being dropped off, so it's never confirmed either way.
• Unstoppable Rage: The platypus-bear just won't quit. Even after having a tiger clamp onto his back, getting repeatedly pelted with a hefty branch, taking a rock to the head, shoulders and gut AND getting all four of his paws stuck in the ground, he just won't be satisfied until he's massacred the three earthlings. It's only the teleporter activating with it's lightning-like effect that finally scares him away.
• You Have to Believe Me!: Jet after being immobilized.
• You Meddling Kids: Ozai after being defeated, causing the Earth trio to burst into laughter.
• Waking Non Sequitur
  • Calvin "AVOCADOS!"
• Waking Up Elsewhere: The story starts with Calvin, Hobbes, and Susie waking up in a Fire Nation field with no memory of arriving there.
• What Did I Do Last Night?: Invoked. When Calvin is being interrogated as to why he didn't speak the local language upon being arrested and not being able to tell the colonel his hometown, Calvin smartly replies "It was a real great party." Once he's alone, the colonel muses that he never gets invited to parties.
• A Wizard Did It: A Spirit Did It: One possible explanation for how the kids are suddenly able to understand the Avatar-verse language.
  • Invoked by Calvin, who convinces some guards that spirits caused the light show from the teleporter, not an Earth Kingdom secret weapon, noting that for once he's glad that in the Avatar World, "spirit shenanigans" can be used as a legitimate excuse.
• Would Hurt a Child: Gaan and Zhu, who want revenge on Susie and Calvin.
