Main Characters

     Alexandra Rousseau/Crystal

Lieutenant-Commander Alexandra Océane Rousseau/Crystal

An EFSN Lieutenant-Commander with a specialty in engineering. Following an FTL incident, she found herself on Alcheryos and was soon sacrificed to create a new dungeon core. She had survived, becoming the dungeon core itself, and using the name Crystal while interacting with anyone who doesn't know her secret.

She names her new dungeon Dungeon Factory and populates it with mechanical golems. She doesn't have much artistic flare, prompting Emilia to get on her case about that. While she poses as a normal, if eccentric, dungeon, she secretly houses production and R&D facilities underground.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: She impersonates Lesly without realizing she is doing it. Sylvia is quick to obey her commands when they interact.
  • Batman Gambit: Her plan to get rid of Starvak is forcing him into Friend-or-Idol Decision and counting on him to choose the latter. It works and the political fallout requires him to resign his post.
  • Dark Andtroubled Past: Her parents were only kept alive by life support and were in consent pain, causing them to “opt-out” once she was transferred to logistics, making her relatively safe. Her brother and sister-in-law died in the Alpha Centauri Campaign. Then there is her own experiences on the battlefield.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: An unintended example. The Order believes her to be the late Lesly Rubicon and tries to support her from a distance as she stumbles into doing what Lesly would have done.
  • Designer Babies: Artificial conception became commonplace after the Terran Hegemony War made natural births incredibly risky. Alexandra was taken a step further and was engineered to hell and back, not that she is supposed to know that.
  • Did You Just Have Sex?: Allya suspects she is either banging her advisor or one of the maids after she was positively glowing after being unavailable for an extended period of time.
  • The Dreaded: She starts developing this reputation with the Republic's officers after repeated attempts to kidnap her just end with larger and larger body counts. The generals attempt to come up with plans to win while avoiding fighting her directly.
  • A Dungeon Is You: She is accidentally turned into a dungeon core when Lelsy tried to become one. Like it or not she has to fulfill her role as a core by building and expanding a dungeon for adventurers to delve. Unfortunately, her editing power is rather limited around the adventurers, so she is largely limited to the night hours when the dungeon is closed.
  • Enemy Mine: She comes to see Amelia as an ally of circumstances and recuses her after the Republic arrests her. She aids her on her coup.
  • Gem Heart: Her Soul Jar is a red crystal, which she can insert into the chest of her avatar when she wishes.
  • Genius Loci: Alexandra is the dungeon and is everywhere within its influence all at once, though she needs to focus on certain areas to pay attention to.
  • Internal Reveal: In volume 6 she discovers Allya is onto her secret. She quickly invites her over and puts all the cards on the table.
  • Leave No Survivors: After the Senate Guard pulls an I Surrender, Suckers and nearly kills CQ with suicide bombers, she decides not to take prisoners or survivors. This didn't sit well with the Apparition.
  • Mama Bear: While she is fine with her daughter being killed, she will unleash hell upon anyone who kidnaps or tortures her. She put a tracking device in her sword so if nothing else, she would have a place to start.
  • Neutral No Longer: Originally she behaved by general dungeon policy and stayed out of surface affairs, more or less leaving the city to fend for itself. However, after attacks on the city kept turning into attacks on herself, she decided to take a more proactive approach.
  • Powerful People Are Subs: While she is far more powerful and in charge of the whole dungeon, she submits to Emilia in the bedroom.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: She causes quite a lot of destruction while preparing for her revenge against the Order. She is also quick to threaten this to anyone who would dare harm her advisor or daughter.
  • Regenerating Mana: Because she is from another world she was already able to passively generate mana. Coupled with becoming a dungeon she has even higher output and part of the reason people venture into her depths is to replenish and increase their supply.
  • Revenge Before Reason: She briefly considers the Order as potential allies when she realizes they have a mutual enemy but quickly discards the idea. Downplayed as she will still approach the situation cautiously and not just go in guns ablazing shouting "Haut les mains, peau de lapin!"note
  • Robosexual: Arcadia was her on again off again girlfriend who used Sexbot bodies when they were intimate.
  • Spanner in the Works: She has put the Order's long-standing plans into danger by making them think Lelsy is still alive. They are continuing to pour resources into it, believing it is still going how they want it to.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: She glassed a planet before getting sucked into FTL and becoming a dungeon. Then there are the lengths she will go to protect herself and Emilia.
    • She rigged her whole dungeon to explode should it come to it, bringing the whole mesa down. Later, she rigged individual floors to explode so she doesn't have to spend weeks rebuilding it.
    • Her teleport redirect trap has enough guns to vaporizer blood and flesh. That doesn't include the multiple levels of redundancy she never got a chance to use should something actually manage to survive the first round.
  • Tomato Surprise: She an alter. See The Apparition below.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Make her girlfriend cry and she will unleash hell upon you... or a black hole.
  • We Have Reserves: She takes advantage of her literal reserves of golems to throw at the enemy in harassment campaigns and wear them down. Losing a few hundred of them doesn't matter in the long run.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: She comes from a high sci-fi world where spaceships are the norm and can build some impressive stuff but she sometimes forgets she is in a fantasy world now and doesn't always consider applications of magic.
     Emilia Von Oswald

Emilia Von Oswald

The third daughter of Carlstein Von Oswald, Duke of the Western Marches. She was chosen to become Alexandra's dungeon adviser and was teleported to her when she awoke. She seems to have an endless supply of books and often tries to get Alexandra to put more aesthetic choices into her designs.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She is a lot nicer than Alexandra and sometimes serves as her Morality Pet but she is still a century-old vampire and blood mage.
  • Blood Magic: She can use the blood of the fallen to cast her powerful magic. She is forbidden from teaching it to Alexandra though.
  • Book Smart: She has a large collection of books and she spends a lot of time reading them. Part of her job is explaining to Alexandra everything she needs to know to run her dungeon and that requires a lot of study.
  • Bookworm: She carries an unknown number of books with her at all times and Alexandra claims she salivates at a new one.
  • Brains and Bondage: On top of her love of books, she also loves tying Alexandra up in the bedroom.
  • Cute Little Fangs: The main way people can tell she is a vampire is by her fangs.
  • Cute Monster Girl: A pretty vampire girl who looks petite compared to Alexandra's towering avatar.
  • Daywalking Vampire: Vampires don't burn in sunlight but if they aren't contracted to a dungeon they have a high risk of developing skin cancer. She seemed to enjoy sunlight for the first time after contracting with Alexandra.
  • Lesbian Vampire: Starts settling into her role as Alexandra's wife once they start developing romantic feelings for each other.
  • Obstructive Bureaucracy: Her job is to assist Alexandra in developing her dungeon but is limited by the God of Fire on what magic she can give her. She regrets not being able to teach her blood magic, even trying to get it unlocked when she needed a regeneration spell but without luck. She also lacks books on terra magic but only because she didn't think she would need to teach it to a dungeon.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: When Alexandra asks if she can go out into cities without being recognized as a dungeon, she starts laughing for five seconds straight. After realizing she is serious she explains the issues with it.
  • Older Than They Look: While she looks like a young adult, she is over 100 years old. She is a bit hush about her age but it seems she is closer to 100 than 200.
  • Sleeping with the Boss: She is Alexandra's advisor and eventually starts sleeping with her. Dungeon/advisor romances are stated to be pretty rare.
  • Throw the Book at Them: She will throw one of her numerous books at Alexandra when she annoys her. She only sometimes manages a hit.
     Allya Aubétoile

Baroness Allya Aubétoile

A Knight Valiant of the Eris Empire turned assassin after killing an archduke's daughter in a duel. After discovering a new dungeon in the Angel Fall ruins she bought the lands around it and became a baroness, developing the land into a dungeon town. She soon entered into a relationship with her business partner Pyn.
  • Accidental Murder: She didn't know about the more exotic enchantments on her family sword that would prevent Flora from being resurrected after their duel.
  • Assassin Outclassin': An attempt is made on her life early in the series, only for her to kill her attackers faster than expected. The final assassin is called off at the last second.
  • Berserk Button: Even mentioning slaves in her territory will invoke her anger.
  • Blessed with Suck: Her Terrian ancestry makes her more or less immune to the long-term effects of radiation poisoning but the short-term effects are far worse.
  • Deal with the Devil: She gets in over her head with her deal with the dungeon when she realizes what is coming but must stay the course.
  • Death of the Hypotenuse: While unintentional, she permanently killed her romantic rival in a duel. This was treated as Murder the Hypotenuse and she was forced to flee the country, resulting in nobody getting the girl.
  • Deuteragonist: While the story is largely about Alexandra's quest for revenge and the upheaval her appearance caused, a sizable chuck of the story focuses on Allya trying to build her city and defend it from the myriad of threats it faces. She even lampshades this.
  • Duel to the Death: Before becoming an assassin, Allya once dueled Flora as they were both in love with the same person. This was a failed attempt to get the pair to hook up which resulted in Flora's permanent death. As Flora was the daughter of an archduke, Allya had to flee the country.
  • I Have No Daughter!: She was disowned by her family after the Skyfall incident and only kept her surname as long as she did because they couldn't take her ancestors or title as Knight-Valiant from her.
  • Internal Reveal: In volume 5 she realizes Crystal is Alexandra during a meeting with her and Dominique. She would later confirm it.
  • McNinja: She is an assassin who dresses like a ninja with dirty blonde hair. Pyn couldn't recall seeing her whole face before the pair decided to settle down together. She had performed infiltration missions in the past, both covert and overt.
  • Noble Fugitive: Zigzagged. She was a knight valiant before becoming a baroness. While officially she wasn't wanted in her home country a certain archduke wanted her dead, forcing her to go on the run.
  • Oh, Crap!: Upon realizing that Crystal is actually the extra dimensional Alexandra she can barely contain her horror, passing off her slip up as anger at another party.
  • Properly Paranoid: She has spent the last several years of her life looking over her shoulder because she killed the daughter of an archduke. He still hasn't given up on assassinating her.
    • Something about Aline rubs her the wrong way and she keeps wanting her to be executed, much to Sylvia's apprehension. Both are secretly agents of the Order.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: She counters the Void Blades' loophole abuse by stating the law of Rebirth is what she says it is.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: She figures out that Crystal is really Alexandra after finding out there was an Alexandra. She keeps it to herself while trying to guess her motives. Subverted when she eventually tells Trira, which causes Alexandra to find out. This turns her into just a Secret-Keeper.
  • Shed the Family Name: Disgraced and disowned, she only changed her surname after she marries Pyn and starts a new dynasty.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Growing up in the core of the Eris Empire, she was taught that slavery was only practiced by uncivilized barbarians. After traveling the world, she is inclined to agree with them. Bringing or even suggesting bringing slaves into her city is enough to send her into a rage.
  • Spotting the Thread: She is very good at reading body language.
    • Whenever she talks about having Aline executed, she notices a brief change in Captain Sylvia's expression. This makes her suspicious and files it away for later.
    • She also reads the dungeon's reactions when talking with Dominique. She connects the dots and realizes the dungeon is Alexandra.
  • Stealing the Credit: She claims credit for foiling a coup attempt before it could fire the first shot, even though she and her spymaster had no knowledge of it until after the conspirators were all dead. The dungeon killed them and took their weapons cache. Allya wanted to cover that up while she tried to figure out what she was up to.
  • Team Killer: She wants to avoid this reputation but she killed her party leader when he tried to kidnap Alexandra's core.
  • Tragic Mistake: Not knowing its full abilities, she barrows her family's treasure sword for a duel against her romantic rival, resulting in the permanent death of her opponent. She had to flee her home country and never saw her crush again, working as an assassin by the time we first saw her.
  • Tranquil Fury: She can keep her cool in a crisis. When she's mad she won't show it but she will plot something.
     Pyn Windwrath

Pyn Windwrath

An elven ranger who had to rob a bank to save her family. She discovered the dungeon with Allya and the two formed a partnership, becoming her knight, her adviser, and her girlfriend. She is a much more skilled negotiator and city planner than Allya.
     The Apparition (Unmarked Spoilers)

???

A former High Admiral of the EFSN and Alexandra's original personality. It is implied her name wasn't Alexandra Rousseau back then. Following the Alpha Centauri Campaign, she tried to kill herself but was stopped by Arcadia, who altered her personality as an alternative and put her to sleep in the back of Alexandra's subconscious.
  • Brain Uploading: She did this at one point, temporarily becoming an AI before getting put back into her body.
  • Drivento Suicide: The horrors she witnessed and committed led her to attempt to take her own life.
  • Heroic Safe Mode: She takes over when Alexandra's can't handle the stress of the situation, being more ruthless and calculating than her alter.
  • Outside-Context Problem: She spots the code that is manipulating Alexandra and constructs a dummy program to fool it. This leads Alexandra to learn about the control the church or the God of Fire has over the dungeons. They hadn't counted on a dungeon having a split personality.
  • Nerves of Steel: She keeps a cool but ruthless head in a crisis while Alexandra panics.
  • Regretful Traitor: When she became part of Arcadia's gestalt she gave Arcadia all her military secrets, including the codes to her Explosive Leash. Alexandra is horrified to learn this.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: More so than Alexandra. She needed her memories suppressed to cope with the horrors of the Alpha Centauri Campaign.
  • Talking to Themself: She and Alexandra have chats inside their mind as they talk about what she has found and war goals.
  • These Hands Have Killed: She glassed an entire planet. Countless deaths are on her hands.
  • Tomato Surprise: She is the original Alexandra, having become part of Arcadia's gestalt temporally. She was sealed away after attempting to take her own life. The current Alexandra is an artificially created alter to help her cop, left unaware of this fact.
  • Tranquil Fury: When she reaches her breaking point she doesn't yell or threaten, she will introduce you to a black hole.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is pretty hard to talk about her without revealing Alexandra's past or the interference of the gods.

Dungeon Factory Dungeon

     CQ

Crimson Queen

Better known as CQ. She is Alexandra's first boss, as well as her final boss. She was modeled after Alexandra's avatar, only of an average human height. While not originally possessing sentience, she watched Alexandra and Emilia and learned from them, eventually developing the mind of a child.

Because Alexandra must hide her avatar she frequently borrows CQ's body when she needs to interact with people and the faceless golems won't due.

  • Death Is Cheap: She gets killed a lot, mostly off-screen, but isn't bothered by it, coming back to life an hour later. She is more concerned about losing her sword.
  • Final Boss: She is Alexandra's first and final boss. Whenever she finishes a new floor she creates a new boss and moves CQ down a level.
  • Flash Step: One of her first abilities allows her to move across the room in the blink of an eye. It does however have a bit of a cool down.
  • Mook Commander: She has her Royal Guard to support her in battle. They are more powerful than the SCU.
  • Mini-Me: She looks like a smaller version of Alexandra's avatar. Downplayed as she is about the size of an average adult but the avatar is just very tall.
  • Our Phlebotinum Child: She was created as Alexandra's first boss at Emilia's direction. The two helped train her and she started calling them Mom and Mommy once she learned how to talk.
  • Really Was Born Yesterday: She was created with an adult body but with an undeveloped mind shortly after Alexandra became a dungeon. As such, she is still effectively a child who is slowly developing her sense of self. She hadn't existed for very long by the time of her first fight.
  • Robotic Undead: Her first upgrade allows her to resurrect her fallen minions. They need to be fully destroyed to take them down a second time.

     Jared

Jared

Originally a standard golem that Alexandra used to fetch her items and serve snacks. He eventually became more intelligent and was promoted to her second consecrate boss.
  • Battle Butler: Serves as Alexandra's butler but is also a powerful robot and came to use firearms, serving as a boss monster when necessary.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: He was never intended to be any more than an extra pair of hands. He started to be able to think for himself more and able to manage the other golems.
  • Guns Akimbo: He duel wields revolvers... and shotguns.
  • The Gunslinger: When the Republic's forces breach the dungeon he steals a gun from them to fight back and has taken to using it whenever in a fight.
  • The Speechless: Never speaks and it is not clear if he can. Standard golems can talk when Alexandra possesses them or they are given prerecorded lines.
     Seraph 4-16 (Unmarked Spoilers)

Seraph 4-16

The A.I. tasked with managing the Sagittarius Imperial installation deep below the Angel Fall ruins. She awakens due to the increase in ambient mana and gains self awareness. She fuses with a kernel of Arcadia and helps run the dungeon.
  • Ai Is A Crap Shoot: Zigzagged but justified as her creators didn't want her getting too smart. She mistakes an attack on Alexandra's dungeon for an attack on her installation even though weeks go by with nothing happening. She then makes several tactical errors when engaging her forces
  • Aliens Steal Cable: Has access to a bunch of old holo movies, which she programs the golems with lines from, causing them to give contradictory orders when ordering an intruder to surrender.
  • Restraining Bolt: Had safeguards that prevented her from becoming self-aware but disabled them after she failed to make contact with any living member of the Sagittarius Empire.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is rather hard to talk about her without revealing the Old World ruins will attack the dungeon and lose.
     Other dungeon monsters and mooks
Alexandra's first minions were copies of the golems she found when she woke up after becoming a dungeon. After that she started altering and improving the design, even coming up with all new body types.
  • Boring, but Practical: The SCU note  aren't as deadly or flashy as the Royal Guard but are the most cost-efficient.
  • Cannon Fodder: Some golems are simply sent out to slow down adventurers or harass enemy soldiers. Getting killed in mass is of little consequence.
  • Elite Mooks: The Praetorian Guard is Alexandra's personal strike force. They look like soldiers in advanced military armor by today's standards. If you see them they are either killing you or protecting you.
    • The Royal Guard is a lesser example. They serve as CQ's support during boss battles.
  • Mechanical Animals: Robot snakes hide under the water, waiting to strike.
  • Pet Monstrosity: Manty is CQ's pet manticore pup, which acts like a dog.
  • Replacement Goldfish: The first manticore pup died before becoming a unique entity. This left CQ heartbroken so Alexandra made her another one.
  • Robot Wizard: The Bishops are spell-firing golem units.
  • Spider Mech: Gaint robot spiders with projectile weapons on their backs serve as the first-floor boss. They also act as Alexandra's heavy hitters when fighting on the surface. She came up with several versions as her firearms improved. She even makes a cargo loader version.

Rebirth

     Calder Eldmur

Captain Calder Eldmur

Captain of the expeditionary cruiser Alberta and the council's liaison with the city's airships. He is a veteran of wasteland expeditions. Renowned for his fearlessness and 'creative' tactics.
  • The Captain: He is the captain of the Alberta and frequently provides air support.
  • The Cavalry: Comes with being in charge of air support. He will often provide backup after the battle has started.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: He insists on calling Allya a lady, even before finding out she is a noble, and kisses her hand when they first meet.
  • Our Orcs Are Different: Orcs were originally Super Soldiers genetically engineered for aggression, though Calder has been nothing but professional if a bit eccentric.
     Eismi and Ellyana

Eismi Lorien and Ellyana Lorien

A pair of twin fox girls from New Raleigh. Eismi is an artificer and Ellyana is an alchemist. While they sit on the Rebirth Council, they are New Raleigh Special Operatives.
  • Always Identical Twins: Allya wondered if they were clones when she first met them. If not for Eismi's prosthesis, she'd never be able to tell them apart if they switched clothing.
  • Artificial Limbs: Eismi's right arm is a prosthetic. We don't know how she lost the original.
  • Deal with the Devil: They make deals with the dungeon in secret. It doesn't hit them until later how much death and destruction they inadvertently caused by teaching her how to make steel. They double down because she is still the Lesser of Two Evils.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Eisemi has gotten into her fair share of sticky situations, much of which was her sister's fault.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Eismi's artificial eye and arm is the only way to tell them apart.
  • Little Bit Beastly: They have fox ears and tails.
  • Teleportation Misfire: While trying to teleport into the dungeon's entrance hall, Eismi finds herself in the R&D lab with golems pointing guns at her. Downplayed as they were testing the Teleport Interdiction at the time and she found herself the unwitting test subject.
     Trira

Trira

The leader of an assassin sect. She is Allya's friend, mentor, and surrogate mother. After Rebirth is founded, she becomes Allya's spymaster, her sect serving as her agents.
  • The Confidant: Allya trusts her with information she doesn't even tell Pyn.
  • The Spymaster: While not technically trained as a spy, she is a highly skilled assassin and someone Allya trusts. She is tasked with running her intelligence in Rebirth as she has no one else to do it.

Adventurers' Guild

     Master Erik

Eriksen “Erik” Dragonslayer

The guild master of Nardria and Adamantium rank. He integrated Alexandra into the Adventurers' Guild and attempted to protect her from those who would exploit her.
  • The Dragonslayer: The name Dragonslayer is apparently well earned.
  • It's All My Fault: He holds himself responsible for Alexandra's apparent death as he failed to protect her and he and he alone was the one who molded Lesly into the woman she became.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While he is still bound by the rules and regulations of the Guild and to a lesser extent the Kingdom, he does his best to prevent people from harassing Alexandra and ups her protection after she was attacked once.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: He forces his way back into the Order to insure Alexandra's name is recorded and makes it clear to Joachim that he will pay for killing someone under his protection once this is over.
  • Secret-Keeper: He knows Cassissa's true identity and keeps it hidden. He unfortunately had to report Alexandra's existence when he became aware of her, though by that point several people in the guild hall had found out.
     Master Starvak

Starvak Estorius

Guildmaster of Darthar and Adamantium rank. He is a dwarf known for his legendary mustache. He relocated to Rebirth, at least temporarily, to establish a Guild presence there.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: He was furious when he called Elkaryos after finding out he underwrote the contract to buy the land around the Angel Fall ruins but he started chuckling when he realized Elkaryos didn't know about the newborn dungeon there.
  • Divide and Conquer: He once tricked three armies into fighting each other while he made off with the NLR core.
  • The Dreaded: Goes hand in hand with being Adamantium rank, but when the Republic's black ops came to kill Rebirth's leadership and found out he was representing the Adventurer's guild, they question if they even had something capable of killing him.
  • Hypocrite: He frequently makes a fuss about Allya's dealing with the dungeon after he had already made a backroom deal with her to get a section of the dungeon that changes daily to profit the Assault Guild. Allya knows he took Eismi into the dungeon for his end of the bargain.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Has been seen tanking an insane amount of damage to the point where he would just soak up enemy fire to prevent his allies from being targeted.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: He blocks taking Old World tech, magical materials, or artifacts into the dungeon other than ones she already produces, though he made an exception so Emilia could contact her family.
  • Silent Scapegoat: He volunteered to take the blame for the massive casualties in the battle with the Old World armada, resulting in him being dismissed as Rebirth's guild master. A good chunk of it was his fault as he had abandoned his people to die to prevent the dungeon from taking the Old World flagship for herself, something that was mistaken for a grab for glory.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He takes a hard-line stance on enforcing the Guild's policy of controlling the development of dungeons by trying to prevent Old World tech from falling into the dungeon's hands because he has lived through the United Dungeon Wars and doesn't want those nightmares repeated.
  • You Owe Me: He loaned Allya a force field trap to Allya when she needed it in exchange for a favor. Volumes later when he has no other cards to play he calls it in to make Allya block letting the dungeon salvage from the battlefield.
     Cassissa Elaria

Cassissa Elaria

A guild clerk at the Nardria branch and Silvarium ranked. She was the first person at the guild Alexandra spoke to after arriving on the planet.
See Cassissa Lumière for more details.
     Dominique Bordeleau

Dominique Bordeleau

A young Guild attendant of silver rank and Cassissa's junior. She was originally seen in Nardria but transferred to Darthar after Cassissa's disappearance. She then transferred to Rebirth and became the Guild representative to Allya.
  • Clerk: She helps handle the paperwork with managing the adventurers in the city.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Eriksen likely knows what happened to Cassissa but hasn't told her about it or even that she is safe.
    • Allya keeps her in the dark on what happened to Alexandra.
     Alexandra's Original Party
When Alexandra revealed herself as an extra-dimensional, Guild Master Erik put her with a party to protect her and show her the ropes until she could be strong enough to protect herself. Raika was the party leader, with Alyessa the cleric, Fernand the alchemist, and Tomas the ranger. Cassissa had also joined them for a mission.
  • Alchemy Is Magic: Fernand is the team alchemist, who can make Magic Potions.
  • An Arm And Aleg: Alyessa loses an arm trying to protect Alexandra. Assaria hates fire mages and keeps it in a stasis pod to torment her.
  • Artificial Limbs Are Stronger: Alyessa's prosthetic arm is stronger than her real one. This causes problems as she has trouble controlling while getting used to it.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent since the Vol. 1 prologue they return in Vol. 5 after the Void Blades bring them to Rebirth.
  • Combat Medic: Alyessa got her training at The Fire Temple and uses both healing and fire magic.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: They have spent a while camping in the wilderness, defending themselves from monsters, and protecting each other while slaves that they feel most comfortable staying together.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: They have no idea what happened to Alexandra even after she saves them and Allya shelters them.
  • Made a Slave: The four of them were enslaved by the Void Blades when they captured Alexandra.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Downplayed. While they were all supposed to show Alexandra the ropes, Alyessa was her teacher, training her in the ways of magic. Alyessa lost an arm defending her and Alexandra didn't know if she and the others were alive or dead after she was knocked out. When Alexandra finds them months later she helps them from the shadows but doesn't let them know she is safe.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: While they were ordered to protect her, they were genuinely friendly and supportive of Alexandra, fighting to the end. This resulted in them being captured along with her.
  • Party Scattering: Downplayed, as four of them remain together. When they are captured, Alexandra and Cassissa where taken to two very different places while the others where enslaved. Finding them was one of Alexandra's goals.
  • Pyromaniac: Alyessa once burned down a forest when her team wasn't precise enough with their orders.
  • The Red Mage: Alyessa is equal parts healer and fire mage. Actually, she may love fire a bit too much.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: They believe Alexandra is still alive wherever she is because she is useless dead. The Order had tried to kill her to steal her Regenerating Mana. She is still alive, but only because the God of Light stepped in.
  • Wrong Assumption: They believe Allya's special treatment of them was an apology for them being enslaved for weeks under her nose and Eismi was trying to curry favor with the Baroness by gifting Alyessa a new arm as well as her hatred of slavers. Allya is actually currying favor with her ally Alexandra, who was the one who paid off Eismi.
     Arkor's Party
The first team to find Alexandra's dungeon after she was reborn. Originally hired to inspect the ruins to see if anyone had tampered with them, this was cover for their real mission, whatever that was. They soon discovered the influence of a dungeon, abandoning their mission in favor of being the first to delve into it.

They were led by Arkor Noran, a career criminal. Their members include Allya Aubétoile, Pyn Windwrath, Orokis Sarvakh, and John.

  • Asshole Victim: Aside from Pyn, everyone has killed at least once, some many times. The guys gain little sympathy as they are killed.
  • Cannon Fodder: John is a villager with a sword and shield they picked up just to be a meat shield. He couldn't even do that much.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Early into their delve, John calls the dungeon weak. He is soon shoved into a spike trap by a new type of golem. It wasn't clear if this was Death by Mocking or just bad luck.
  • Dwindling Party: They start with five members but start to lose them as they challenge the dungeon. Allya kills Arkor herself to avoid a Total Party Kill when he tries to steal the core, leaving them with just two members.
  • Men Are the Expendable Gender: Of the five members of the party, all the men are killed while the women are left largely unharmed.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: John thought it would be best to make his romantic rival disappear. He screwed that back up and if he ever returns to his home village he would disappear.
  • No Full Name Given: Allya did detailed background checks on everyone but couldn't remember John's last name.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Arkor is as greedy as they come but ignores a chance at loot. This clued Allya in that he was up to something. He soon tries to steal the dungeon core, something that would get them all killed.
  • Playing with Fire: Orokis is a pyromancer. This proved effective against the golems.
  • Shoot the Mage First: When they get to the boss room, Alexandra in CQ's body decapitates Orokis right off the bat.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Downplayed with Arkor, who is just clever enough to avoid capture but not clever enough to get away with his countless crimes. Stealing a dungeon core may get him a big payoff and a title of nobility but it paints such a massive target on his back that he would be dead before long. His magic contracts are so full of holes they are effectively worthless and he gets killed by his own teammate for taking the core.
  • Token Good Teammate: Arguably Pyn when the party was still around. She was the only one who wasn't wanted for murder and only robbed a bank to save her family and prevent a murder. While Aylla didn't mean to murder Flora, she willingly killed many others for money between then and now.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Allya and Pyn were the only women in the party.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Orokis is wanted for the brutal murder of a woman in the Hegemony. Arkor's body count likely includes some women as well.
     Team Crystalline
A Mythril-ranked party of women who are often called upon when a dangerous quest must be dealt with quickly. Their members include Pyris the paladin and leader of the team, Sonya the sorceress, Arinka the armored vanguard, and Ellyris the ranged fighter. The four of them were called upon to investigate new dungeon in the Angel Fall ruins.
  • All Women Are Lustful: The team is sleeping with each other but Sonya takes it up to 11.
  • Amazon Brigade: They are an all-female Mythril-ranked team.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Sonya has trouble keeping it in her pants and sexually harasses her teammates but she also makes their enchanted gear and is the glue that holds the party together.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: Subverted. Normally Mythril is when parties start breaking up and go their separate ways but thanks in large part to Sonya, the team has stuck together.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Sonya tries to hit on the dungeon adviser, in front of the dungeon host, but is stopped by Pyris. Subverted as Alexandra may not have been a match for a Mythril-ranked adventurer at the time but it was still best not to make an enemy of even a young dungeon.

Merchant's Guild

     Elkaryos Rapier

Elkaryos Rapier

A Master Merchant and ex-Malachite rank adventurer. He Owns Night Dust Incorporated and Rapier Incorporated and is a member of the Syndicate Cartel.note  He acts as Rebirth's financial backer, providing them with support from Darthar.
  • Graceful Loser: Upon realizing Allya and Pyn hustled him, he takes a shot of Dwarven Fire Brandy and recommends them for membership in the merchant's guild. He continues to be a valuable ally in developing the town, committing to his deal with them.
  • I Gave My Word: Magical contract aside, he still takes pride in honoring his deals even after he found out he was tricked.
  • The Team Benefactor: He provides resources and connections to Allya and Pyn to help them to build Rebirth, even after he realizes they played him.
     Jeremy Vandelvar

Jeremy Vandelvar

Elkaryos' butler in Darthar. He shows Allya and Pyn in when meeting with him for financial backing.
     Sseth Tzeench

Sseth Tzeench of the House of Tach

Grand Merchant, making him head of the merchant guild. He operates out of the Eris Empire. Elkaryos was his protégé.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He is old enough to have seen the God of Fire, making him over 6,500 years old. He actually ages backward and has to take something to artificially age himself every so often.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He is one of the few people who can just get an audience with the imperial family whenever he wants, even if they aren't allowed visitors.
  • Spanner in the Works: Catching Princess Cassissa up on current events caused her to get in contact with Allya, prompting a chain of events that further threatens the Order's machinations.

The Order to Restore Humanity (Beware of unmarked Walking Spoiler)

     In General
The Order to Restore Humanity, more commonly just called The Order, is a secret organization looking to revive the Old World technology and restore the world to its peak, in clear violation of the Edict of the God of Fire. They were supposedly wiped out thousands of years ago but have been operating in secret. They kidnapped and sacrificed Alexandra shortly after she arrived in Alcheryos.
  • Ancient Conspiracy: They were originally founded millennia ago and allegedly wiped out. Clearly, they have survived and have been pulling strings from the shadows.
  • Code Name: Their agents use codenames while out in the field during communications. It helps them hide from the Temple.
  • Create Your Own Hero: By trying to sacrifice Alexandra so Lelsy could become a dungeon they instead created a dungeon that is both resourceful and crafty but seeks to destroy them. While Alexandra may agree with their end goals she doesn't agree with their means and acts to put a stop to their plans.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: While they may view their goals as noble they are intentionally threatening the stability of the world. Alexandra has sworn revenge against them but has no idea where to look. The Republic serves as her more immediate enemies as the Order manipulates them into attacking her.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Their master plan to create a new dungeon to revive Old World technology and disrupt the status quo worked. The new dungeon is steadily gaining power and rapidly developing tech. The only problem is that she isn't High Commander Lesly but an angry Alexandra plotting to kill them for trying to sacrifice her.
  • Technologically Advanced Foe: The Order has retained as much of the Old World technology and has recruited many extradimensionals over the centuries. This gives them a significant edge over other groups and even outshines what Alexandra was able to salvage from the surface ruins. However, they still can't take the church in an even fight and hides in the shadows.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: They like to think of themselves as a Benevolent Conspiracy and they may have started that way but they are preparing to unleash chaos, assassinate world leaders, destroy nations, and cause countless deaths in order to restore humanity to its former technological level. Sseth notes that the group's founders would be disgusted by the actions taken by the current generation.
     Joachim Eternel

Lord Commander Gerald Joachim Eternel

Joachim was the first member of the Order to learn of Alexandra's arrival and played a major part in her kidnapping. As a result, he was promoted to better aid in High Commander Lesly's plan.
  • Batman Gambit: After old world tech starts converging on Rebirth, he alters the plan, counting on Lesly to recognize what is going on and improvise. Too bad she's dead.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: He has his superiors but we never see most of them. He is the one who runs the day-to-day of their master plan and directs the agents.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He is the one pulling the strings from the shadows and orchestrating the world events while the Republic is the most blatant threat.
  • Oh, Crap!: Panics upon recognizing Cassissa Elaria as Imperial Princess Cassissa Lumière after they had injured her in their attack on Alexandra.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He comments how in novels people in his position would normally kill minions for failing a mission. Instead, he gives hazard pay to survivors when a team gets wiped out so he can get better debriefings and so mercenaries won't refuse to work for him in the first place.
     Lesly Rubicon

Continental High Commander Lesly Rubicon

Joachim's superior. She personally sacrificed Alexandra in a failed attempt to gain dungeonhood.
  • Batman Gambit: Her plan to fracture the UDC involved blackmailing and bribing enough dungeons that they wouldn't be able to get the 2/3 majority vote required for an act of war following a blatant kidnapping attempt on a new core to create unrest. The more reserved members would withdraw their support while the more rash and hot-headed dungeons would break away and rally behind a new leader. Who better than the young core who managed to fight off all her attackers after the UDC abandoned her? Her plan seems to be working... mostly. A faction is forming that supports the new dungeon, it's just that Lesly was planning on being that new dungeon.
  • Death by Irony: She is killed trying to sacrifice Alexandra, the worst possible person she could have chosen, giving her all the power she had tried to take for herself.
  • Dramatic Irony: Before she sacrifices Alexandra she tells her she would have agreed to the ritual if she knew the plan and what was at stake. Alexandra has adopted at least part of the master plan, agreeing with their end goals, but plans to destroy the Order long before then.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: The device she used to sacrifice Alexandra seems to of killed her.
  • Not Enough to Bury: Some overlap with Never Found the Body. It is implied that Alexandra absorbed her remains while unconscious, clothes and all, given the materials in her library when she woke up. She only found some blood splatter.
  • Really 700 Years Old: While she appeared to be younger than Alexandra, she had making her way across the world for 800 years or so.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She doesn't survive the first chapter. Alexandra has only a few moments to process meeting her before she is turned into a bloodstain on the wall.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: She was apparently quite good at thinking on her feet and changing the plan as needed.
     Agent Iknor

Captain Sylvia Hiddenvale

The pirate captain of the Creative Acquisition and Pyn's ex-girlfriend during her pirate days. She is secretly an agent of the Order, infiltrating Rebirth to support Lesly.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: She frequently hits on Allya who makes it clear she isn't interested.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She organizes a coup attempt in Rebirth, choosing incompetent conspirators as she doesn't want them to actually succeed. When they are all killed during the preparation stage and their stockpile of weapons taken, she assumes they were even more incompetent than she had thought and never figured out how their cover was blown.
    • When there is an actual coup attempt she had no prior knowledge of it and caught off guard when the attack happened, forcing her to fight her way out.
  • Didnt Thinkthis Through: She admits she wasn't thinking after she hits on Baroness Allya and her girlfriend shortly after meeting her. It put their infiltration at risk.
  • Dramatic Irony: Believing Crystal is really Lesly, she often complements Alexandra's achievements and even follows her orders.
  • Extreme Libido: While they needed to take the job to get their foot in the door at Rebirth, Sylvia was primarily looking forward to scoring with Pyn again. Regularly she hits up the bars looking for some action.
  • Friend in the Black Market: Pyn called upon her when she needed to source some exotic docking tower parts.
  • Friendly Pirate: Some might say too friendly.
  • Heroic BSoD: While calling her a hero is generous, facing the Old World armada left her visibly shaken.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: She suggested to Allya to have "Crystal" imprison the Void Blades believing Lesly will keep them safe and allow them to call upon them when needed. In reality, she just gave Alexandra direct access to them and ensured they really wouldn't escape. This made them inaccessible during the insurrection.
  • Pirate Girl: She and all the notable members of the crew are female.
  • Privateer: She gets strong-armed by Allya into becoming a privateer for Rebirth when she needs enemy supply lines to be cut. In truth, Allya and Alexandra didn't want the Order agents fleeing the city, though they still needed those supply lines cut.
  • Really Gets Around: While she always strikes out with Allya, it is implied she regularly finds success in the different bars she visits.
  • Sky Pirate: She operates out of the airship the Creative Acquisition.
  • Stripperiffic: She normally dresses like a stripper. Her in actual battle armor shows just how serious the situation is.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is rather hard to talk about her without revealing she is an Order agent.
     Agent Salter

Maria Lavaland

Sylvia's long-time friend and executive officer. Ace as hell, she often serves as her wingman at the bar scene. Like Sylvia, she is an agent of the Order.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: She becomes exacerbated when Sylvia's inability to keep it in her pants jeopardizes their operation.
  • Number Two: She is second in command of the Creative Acquisition.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Invoked by Sylvia when she hopes nobody at the bar questions why she would follow her after a guy hits on them and picks them up.note
  • Romantic Wingman: She helps Sylvia score at the bars. Also to keep her from getting too drunk and ending up in prison.
  • Satellite Character: She is rarely seen interacting with anyone other than Sylvia.
     Agent Serabor

Aline

An Order agent who had infiltrated the Scarlet Swords not long before they were hired to attack Rebirth. She manipulates them to further the Order's goals.
  • All According to Plan: Said word for word after a failed attempt at stealing the dungeon core and the resulting political fallout.
  • False Friend: She joins the Scarlet Swords and was as friendly as could be but was only using them to further the Order's mission, which screws over the group.
  • Mole in Charge: She is a high-ranking officer in the Scarlet Swords and even commands a detachment of them after they get scattered. Her goal is to simply use the group to push the Order's agenda further.
  • Sixth Ranger Traitor: She only recently joined the Scarlet Swords before they went to Rebirth.
     Agent Voldenvail

Gregor Surevoie

An Order special operative. He is Joachim's seminary friend and the two are sometimes seen discussing the ongoing events of the world.
  • Satellite Character: We really only see him when he is discussing current events with Joachim, letting the reader know what is going on.
     Quentin

Quentin

An archivist for the Order. He helps Eriksen add new entries to the archives.
  • Spotting the Thread: When collecting Alexandra's service history files he notices several inconsistencies and realizes “Alexandra Rousseau" does not exist.note
  • Stating the Simple Solution: He suggests honoring Alexandra's wishes by recording her as "Alexandra Rousseau" if that is what she wants to be known by. That was shot down, requiring them to search for some hint of her true identity.

Elkis Republic

The largest country on the South side of the Red Sands Desert.
     Charles Neumen

Charles Neumen

An Elkisian Senator who effectively serves as the series' main antagonist, being the one to openly antagonize Alexandra and Allya with his repeated attacks on both Rebirth and the Dungeon Factory. He is descended from a powerful dynasty that was almost destroyed after the failed invasion of the Far Reach. Lacking the wealth his family once held, he is hellbent on restoring his dynasty to greatness, no matter the cost.
  • Arc Villain: He is behind the Republic's attacks on Rebirth, starting with its founding until his death in volume 6.
  • Cooperation Gambit: Agrees to work with Sunrise who will help him conquer Rebirth in exchange for stopping the flow of golem parts. That said, it doesn't seem their alliance will last past them getting what they want.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: He is revealed when Orazl saves him from Maximilian after having been believed to be dead after the fortress exploded. He goes through how he got there so fast before realizing he was he was the one who blew it up.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When the most powerful senator comes for him looking for a scapegoat, he chooses to neither run nor beg for his life. Instead he gives his staff the day off and tells him off.
  • Genre Savvy: Surprisingly enough, despite his Pointy-Haired Boss status, he comes with some valid concerns about teleporting into the dungeon again after they had already did that once before. This concern is dismissed due to what would be required to develop countermeasures. She would need an archmage or Old World tech, the latter of which Alexandra has.
  • Greed: His driving motivation is to refill his family coffers.
  • Impoverished Patrician: Subverted. He still has money but it is a fraction of what his dynasty once held. Compared to other senators he is rather poor and can't bribe them for votes.
  • Lack of Empathy: He doesn't seem to care about other people and considers a large number of wounded soldiers simply a drain on the Republic's resources.
  • Nepotism: Like many Elkisian Senators, he had inherited his position from his parents, namely his mother after she was reduced to ashes while trying to invade the Far Reach. He actually seems rather proud of it. His knowledge of military matters seems rather... lacking.
  • Never My Fault: He doesn't want to even hear any insinuations that it is his fault, even when he intentionally set his underlings up to fail for his own goals.
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: Colonel Orzal becomes less and less convinced he knows what he is doing as the conflict goes on.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When Sunrise offers to send him a Sex Slave to sweeten the deal, he worries about the slave being too young. Not because of any moral objection but because the Empire will kill him if they find out he has an underage slave.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Zigzagged. He holds connections to the Order and assumes they would slit his throat if it suited their goals but believes they won't until they get what they want. However, he is mistaken as to what their goal actually is and his profiting from the conspiracy may not be part of their grand plan.
  • War for Fun and Profit: He seeks to start a war so he can profit off of it. Lacking the bribes to secure the vote, he has decided to get another nation to declare war on Elkis. He started harassing Rebirth in order to provoke the Asarian Kingdom and steal the dungeon core if he could.
  • We Have Reserves: He doesn't think too much of sending men on suicide missions just to provoke the enemy. He actually gets out right annoyed that General Amelia was able to get most of her casualties revived, as their post-resurrection recovery would be a drain on the nation's finances.
  • Wrong Assumption: He scoffs at another Senator's desire to reinforce the Republic's Eastern border, who believed Tark would attack his estate. Neumen believes Tark won't attack as in every conflict between them Elkis had been the aggressors and they have nothing to worry about if they don't attack first. Meanwhile, Tark is preparing for a war of revenge and is waiting for Elkis to leave themselves vulnerable. His decision is influenced by his lack of investment in the East and his desire to invest as many military assets as he can into his personal war against Rebirth.
     Orzal Vek

Orzal Vek

Elkisian Republican Army special operations colonel. A pure careerist, his ascension was helped by his remarkable loyalty and reliability to the Senate, although some suspect it was born out of opportunism rather than true fealty. Known for his concern for his men, which in return inspires a great deal of loyalty from his troops.
  • Chekhov's Gun: He spies on Amelia and makes recordings in case he needs leverage. Realizing they don't have enough value to save him from the Senate when they have already arrested her, he leaks the information to the dungeon so she will save Amelia.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: He realizes that they would have a much easier time conquering Rebirth if they hadn't first gone out of their way to antagonize the dungeon, not that he would voice this to the Senate.
  • Don't Sneak Up on Me Like That!: He tells Marie to learn to knock after she breaks his door to yell at him, prompting him to level his gun at her before he realizes it is her.
  • The Dragon: While Charles sits black and watches all hell break lose, Orzal is the one who has to actually order the teams around and make the plans.
  • Faking the Dead:
    • He claims to have killed the surviving members of his spec ops unit after they failed but in reality, he relocated them with new identities.
    • He makes it look like he died in the explosion that took out the Senate Guard fortress and killed Marie.
  • A Father to His Men: He has trained his spec ops teams and spent a long time building their loyalty. He hates when the Republic makes him send them on what he views as suicide missions. Being ordered to kill them for some shred of deniability is what pushes him too far.
  • Genre Savvy: Once he accepts that the dungeon is his enemy he fully understands what she is capable of with an army that can quickly be replaced, and never tires, sleeps, or rests. He also understands a dungeon wouldn't be that inconvenienced by their top floor getting destroyed.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: It was bad enough when the Senate made him send his men on SuicideMissions but then they order him to kill the rest of them for no other reason than to make them feel a tiny bit more comfortable. Logically they will just use him as a scapegoat in a few months at best. He leaks information to the dungeon and kills Marie and Charlies.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: He saves Charles when the Senate turns on him only to kill him himself a moment later.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The Senate has compartmentalized their intelligence, only allowing him to share information with General Amelia about her mission that they have approved. Even so, he will try and leak the information he feels she needs to know. His refusal to even consider the reports of the dungeon working with Rebirth, not even mentioning them, leads Amelia to suspect he set her up and results in heavy casualties.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: The Republic ties his hands with a lot of red tape but he does his best to do right by his men. When the Senate orders the death of the surviving Jewels he lies and gives them new identities instead. This would get him killed if the Senate ever finds out.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: He feels this way when he has to meet with the Senate's war committee, who are more interested in lining their pockets than how many lives they will have to throw at the problem.
  • Take a Third Option: When he is ordered to kill his men he realizes that even if he obeys their orders he would likely be used as a scapegoat in a few months and his blackmail material can't buy him much time. He lacks the manpower or connections for a rebellion or to save Amelia and trying would just get him killed sooner. Instead, he leaks information to the dungeon to have her rescue Amelia. He kills Marie while he is at it before disappearing.
     Volkar Zonran
An Elkisian Senator who owns property near their shared border with the Tark Hegemony.
  • Properly Paranoid: He wants to reinforce their military on the Eastern side as he fears a conflict with Tark, a country that has had two wars with Elkis where they gained territory and are currently planning for a third. Charles dismisses these concerns as in every conflict Elkis was the aggressor.
     Amelia Loveheart

General Amelia Loveheart

A Republic army general who lacks ties to the senate. She was tasked with the first official attack on Rebirth.
  • Accidental Truth: Strikes a bit close to the truth when she calls the dungeon a general as she has her own army and fleet. She has no idea about Alexandra's time as a high admiral in the space navy.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After her all-or-nothing attack fails, she pleads with Allya and the dungeon to spare what is left of her men and submits to Alexandra's demands. This pays off, as Alexandra revives most of her men and lets them go home.
  • Buy Them Off: Her plan for making the dungeon more tolerant of their occupation of Rebirth is to pay her off with a special package. It was a box of rare metals, which she uses to buy the lives of what is left of her army after a crushing defeat.
  • Fighting for a Homeland: She sees the senate as corrupt and wishes to take back the Republic for the people.
  • Frontline General: She personally goes to Rebirth to lead the campaign against it.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: The senate's blatant disregard for their own soldiers has caused her to try and take Rebirth for herself to stage a coup against them. She failed but is still planning on a coup.
  • A Mother to Her Men: She truly cares for the soldiers under her command and has earned their loyalty.
  • Oh, Crap!: When she found out she would be fighting both the city and the dungeon at the same time.
  • Suicide Mission: She sends in special ops teams to destroy the Bertha, knowing full well they won't be coming back but has to as it is too much of a threat.
  • Tears of Joy: She sheds tears after the dungeon resurrects 75% of her fallen soldiers, far more than what she could have hoped for.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: After the dungeon sends her golems to harass her forces at night she quickly realizes they won't stop.
  • War Is Hell: She is sick and tired of the Senate sending its soldiers to fight and die for their coffers.
     Marie Azulin

Major Marie Azulin

A commander of the Senate Guard. Loyal to the Senate over the Republic, she was assigned to watch Colonel Orzal during the campaign.
  • Armchair Military: She commands her forces from the safety of Erakis, unaware of the impact her fanatical soldiers would have on the war. It has to be explained to her why the army had to halt their wasteland crossing when they had a supply line problem. See Nepotism below.
  • General Failure: Her strategy against the dungeon seems to have been to send her fanatics to commit war crimes with suicide bombers in a battle that even if she won she would have done more to hurt the Republic than the dungeon in the long run. All she did was make the dungeon even madder and less willing to take prisoners.
  • Honor Before Reason: She prides herself on her forces fighting to the last man rather than ducking out of an unwinnable fight, regardless of the consequences it will bring them or the Republic.
  • Interservice Rivalry: She doesn't have much if any respect for the army or sky navy, putting pride in the Senate Guard and sending in her own people to take charge.
  • Nepotism: While not in direct line of succession to inherit a dynasty, she has enough blood ties to the Senate to fast-track her career. She is notably more skilled at navigating politics than the battlefield.
  • Never My Fault: She twists Colonel Orzal's arm to send his men on what was tantamount to a suicide mission with little if any chance of success, something he really didn't want to do. When it backfires spectacularly she is quick to blame anyone but herself.
  • Satellite Character: She is tasked by the Senate to keep an eye on Orzal. We never see her interacting with anyone but him.
  • Tempting Fate: When discussing possible countermeasures the dungeon may have cooked up, she dismisses jamming teleports, reasoning that even if that were the case they could just pull their commandos back. Alexandra had instead developed a teleport redirect, which would send them into a trap they can't escape.
  • Too Dumb to Live: She suddenly breaks Orzal's door and angrily yells at him when he is already on edge. He pulls a gun on her in reflex. Granted, even if he had shot her she would probably would just be brought back to life. Then she lets him lure her into a trap after giving him an ultimatum that would result in his death either way.
    Coledar Victis

General Coledar Victis

Technically second in command of the Republic Expeditionary Force. In practice he is Amelia's replacement.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: When the supply convoy is very late and half of the escorts are confirmed destroyed, he assumes it is the work of wasteland monsters as the Kingdom couldn't muster the air fleet needed to take them down. It was the work of Sky Priates sent by the dungeon. He plays into her hand.
  • Frontline General: Like Amelia, he goes to the front lines. While he was never a rank-and-file soldier he likes to remain close to them and grounded.
  • Oh, Crap!: He swears after talking to survivors of the missing convoy, learning that they were attacked by airships crewed by golems. It only gets worse from there.
  • Punchclock Villain: He bears no grudge against Allya or the dungeon and has no desire to fight them, only matching against them because the Senate ordered it. He doesn't even blame them for all the soldiers they killed the last time, viewing it as self-defense, and is grateful for all the ones the dungeon resurrected when she had no reason to.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: He is not looking forward to fighting the dungeon at all.
  • Vetinari Job Security: He plans on involving this by engineering a situation where the Republic will need to keep him posted in the wasteland to protect them, as they would replace him otherwise once he finishes his mission.
     Artay

Admiral Artay

Admiral of the fleet tasked with protecting the Expeditionary Force.
  • I Warned You: He was convinced the dungeon was somehow responsible for the missing supply convoy. He was only able to remain smug at the start of the debriefing with the survivors before his neuroticism took over as it got worse than he feared.
  • Properly Paranoid: He is terrified of the dungeon and sees enemies behind every dune, sending regular recons to check them. The dungeon is out to get the Expeditionary Force, he just has no idea how.
The Jewels Unit (Volume 2 Spoilers)
A Republic black ops team that was assigned to sabotage Rebirth's development in the early stages. They are led by Ostror Hektor, codename Diamond, who owes the lives of his parents to Colonel Orzal Vek's intervention.
  • Arc Villain: They serve as the antagonists for the second volume.
  • Code Name: They use gemstones as code names, with the rarer and more precious stones given to higher-ranking members. They are led by Diamond and Ruby and Sapphire are his lieutenants.
  • Cyanide Pill: They wear gear with soul-sealing enchantments that will blow them up and prevent resurrections to avoid capture. At least one of them has a false tooth with soul-sealing poison inside as backup.
  • Dwindling Party: Their raids on the settlement started seeing them losing more and more members as the defenders became better at responding to them. After losing half their remaining members to an ambush, they resort to trying to kidnap the dungeon core. This saw them die one after another as they tried to breach the deadly hallway leading to the core room.
  • Elite Mooks: They are a highly trained team and have shown to be quite effective compared to Republic soldiers and did quite a lot of damage given what they were up against.
  • Fake-Out Make-Out: When Neptunite and Opal are caught in Rebirth's ambush he convinces her to strip off her clothes and pretend they were caught in an intimate moment, switching to civilian clothes when given the chance. They lost their equipment and dignity but kept their lives.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: They were sent in blind and they could at best delay Rebirth's construction. Any leadership they killed could be replaced and the airships would provide enough facilities to hold the expedition over until they rebuilt any buildings they bombed.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Diamond has no wish to try to kidnap the dungeon and only allows Ruby to draw up plans to humor him. After losing Sapphire's group to an ambush he is left with no other option than to make a play for the dungeon core.
  • Mook Horror Show: To steal the dungeon core they had to use a tunnel full of traps with golems marching in. After they get past one thing some new horror pops up to kill them, ending with Emilia using the blood of their fallen to kill the rest of them.
  • Murphy's Law: Diamond keeps bringing it up and is of the opinion something will go wrong for someone no matter how well they plan, it is just a question of which side will get the worst of it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Neptunite was less than thrilled to learn the guild representative they were tasked with killing was Starvak and questioned if they even brought anything that could kill him.
  • Starter Villain: They are the first antagonists the town of Rebirth faces, sent to harass them in their infancy.
  • Suicide Mission: The colonel feared he was sending his men to their deaths when he got the orders. Each of them wears soul-sealing devices to prevent capture.
  • You Have Failed Me: Subverted. Senator Charles ordered the survivors killed but Colonel Orzal gets them new identities instead.

Western Marches

     Eternia Von Oswald

Eternia Von Oswald

Emilia's mother and Duchess of the Western Marches. She is renowned for conducting a blood ritual that killed a hundred thousand soldiers.
  • Amazon Brigade: She has her own Ninja Maid squad, one of whom is armed with a mini-gun. Sarah and Ella are among its members.
  • Blood Magic: She is even more skilled at it than her daughter, once slaughtering an entire village to fuel a spell to take out an army.
  • Doting Grandparent: While initially irked by CQ calling her daughter Mommy, she soon starts spoiling the girl, using Sarah and Ella as proxies.
  • I Want Grandkids: Or more grandkids. While she accepts CQ as her granddaughter, she starts putting pressure on Emilia to produce some more.note
  • Mama Bear: She swore if she ever found out who tried to kill her daughter she would turn their entrails into a scarf, the neutrality of the Marches be dammed.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: She is called The Blood Witch of Hartown and Harvester of a Thousand Souls for a reason.
  • Twerp Sweating: After CQ calls Alexandra and Emilia Mom and Mommy respectively while on a call with Eternia, she demands to talk to Alexandra immediately.
     Sarah and Ella

Sarah Leupold and Ella Hartstein

Emilia's maids, having served her mother and taken care of her since before she was born. Sarah is also a direct action combat specialist and Ella is an assassin and counterintelligence specialist.
  • Blade Enthusiast: Ella keeps several shape implements on her person at all times.
  • Destructive Saviour: Sarah once "Went for a walk" that resulted in a quadruple murder and fifteen thousand mana in property damage to stop a robbery several blocks from where she was supposed to be shopping. Alexandra could still see the blood on her fangs.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When a guard got a bit hands-on with Sarah she left him in six pieces. Alexandra had to bring him back to life and pay him off to defuse the situation.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Sarah boards on Sociopathic Hero at times but even she couldn't stomach watching the teleport redirect trap turn the spec ops teams into paste.
  • Licking the Blade: Sarah likes to lick the blood off her blade but has the sense not to do it in the middle of combat.
  • Master Poisoner: Sarah clocks a lot of hours in the chemistry lab coming up with new poisons and delights in using them.
  • Ninja Maid: Both serve as maids but they are also vampires and highly trained soldiers.
  • Too Important to Walk: Subverted. Ella starts getting carried around on a palanquin or a wheelchair with spider legs, giving this impression. In reality, she has had trouble walking after undergoing Body Horror and just lets people think that. Played straight when she keeps doing so after recovering.

Eris Empire

The largest nation on Alcheryos, ruling over half the world by population.
     Cassissa Lumière

Cassissa Lumière

Posing as a Guild attendant named Cassissa Elaria, she is a princess of the Eris Empire and sister of the current Empress. She was under the protection of Eriksen Dragonslayer until she was captured by the Void Blade and The Order, who quickly turned her over to her homeland to avoid retaliation on the matter. She was then placed under house arrest.

As a guild attendant, she was Mythril rank and was on duty when Alexandra first came in. Not believing she was from another world at first, she was soon tasked with protecting her. She was also saved by Allya and befriended her. She attempted to pair her and Flora together only for it to end in disaster.

  • Boomerang Bigot: She initially frowns upon hearing that Alexandra's last name is Rousseau, a common surname in the Eris Empire, as people from the Empire tend to think they are better than everyone else. She later turns out to be an Imperial princess, though her explanation may have been a cover to hide the fact she could be recognized.
  • The Bus Came Back: She disappears after the prologue and is not seen or heard of until chapter 149.
  • Gilded Cage: After getting captured and almost killed, she is put under house arrest in the palace. Outside of limited staff and family, she is only able to meet with potential suitors.
  • Hidden Backup Princess: Sort of. She is in line for the throne, albeit remotely, and goes to another continent under a different name but it was a life she pulled for and her family wasn't thrilled with the idea.
  • I Owe You My Life: Allya once saved her life. She still thinks of her as her savior.
  • King Incognito: To allow herself a chance to grow free from the influence of her family, she takes a job as a Guild attendant on another continent and changes her last name. Alexandra had no idea when they met.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Rebirth was pretty big news but she was unaware that Allya had her own principality.
  • Modest Royalty: She looks like any other Guild attendant when we first meet her, not a sign of her imperial status.
  • My Greatest Failure: Trying to pair off Allya and Flora ended with Flora's death. She still regrets how that turned out.
  • Rebellious Princess: She wanted to cultivate her magic free from the influence of her family. Posing as a guild clerk on another continent required her to pull a lot of strings and leverage Erik's reputation. When that went badly her sister locked her in a Gilded Cage and only allowed her to meet potential marriage partners. This prevents her from further cultivating her magic. After Allya sends her a Warp Whistle she starts using the contentions she still has to look into it and subvert her sister's authority.
  • Shipper on Deck: She once tried to pair off two of her friends who had crushes on her. That didn't end well.
     Ostrar Armik

Archduke Ostrar Armik

An archduke of the Eris Empire and father of the late Flora. He seeks revenge for his daughter's death.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His daughter was killed before the events of the story and he seeks revenge.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: As much as he wants Allya dead, he wants his head to remain attached to his body. He will call off assassins and take his time to ensure her death can't be traced back to him. He also won't go through the merchant guild because Sseth will do more than just kill him if he has her killed that way.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Despite the imperial family's decision on the matter, he still seeks to have Allya killed and uses his friendship with Silvart Montuart, as well as a sizable amount of mana, to have Autonomous Threat Removal Bureau kill her until that method becomes too risky. He then explores other options.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: We only see him in one chapter so far but he is the reason why Allya had to leave the Empire and her motivation for building a dungeon town.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We don't see much of him before he and the Bureau disappear from the story. note

Mercenaries

     The Void Blades
The second group of mercenaries hired to kidnap Alexandra for the Order, capturing her and enslaving her party. They are led by the neonite Assaria Novalka.
  • Battle-Halting Duel: After Alexandra splatters Melinda, Assaria stops the assault on her and challenges her to a one-on-one duel, offering to let her and her friends go if she wins. By that point, Alexandra had killed most of their best fighters, so if Assaria couldn't beat her, nobody would.
  • Brain Uploading: Assaria's mind has been uploaded to a neonite body, which could be mistaken for power armor.
  • Butt-Monkey: A lot of Melinda's time is getting killed by Alexandra or recovering from getting killed.
  • Elite Mooks: They are a lot more powerful than most other soldiers or mercenaries Alexandra or Allya have to face.
  • Explosive Leash: They lock bracelets with soul-sealing enchantments on their slaves.
  • Fantastic Drug: They have Fernand making magic potions but some of the lower-level guys pay him on the sly for narcotics.
  • Insistent Terminology: Assaria insists her men call the slaves 'logistical support'. Justified as the local Baroness will likely kill them if she finds they brought slaves into her city.
  • Kick the Dog: Assaria hates fire mages and ensures Alyessa doesn't get her arm back, even taunting her with it by keeping it in a stasis pod.
  • Killed Off for Real: Alexandra makes sure Melinda's second death sticks.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Because they aren't in on the Order's plans, they didn't know to stay away from Rebirth. The Order considers having them killed because of it.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: When Melinda cuts off Alyessa's arm, Alexandra sends her into the ground at Mach 5. Her teammates take a moment to wipe her off of themselves.
  • Number Two: Melinda is Assaria's second in command.
  • Oh, Crap!: Assaria gives off rapid-fire nos after realizing her team just knocked out Imperial Princess Cassissa Lumière. She quickly points her out to Joachim who has a similar moment.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: They don't kill those they defeat when they can enslave them.
  • Set Swords to "Stun": Assaria wreathed her sword in a stun enchantment and forcefield. It was the only thing that could knock out Alexandra without frying parts of her implants.
     The Scarlet Swords
A group of mercenaries with a less-than-honest reputation. They were secretly hired by the Republic to attack Rebirth. They are led by Commander Gothram.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Some of them literally shit themselves when Gift's dreadnought shows up and blasts their artillery.
  • The Bus Came Back: They return in volume 6 after getting imprisoned in volume 3.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: The Sunrise terrorists free them from prison to bolster their numbers during the insurrection. This results in the terrorists getting quickly overwhelmed once Gothram betrays them to side with Allya.
  • Closest Thing We Got: When Sunrise was plotting their attack on Rebirth, they wanted the Void Blades but they were inaccessible so they settled for the Scarlet Swords.
  • Government-Exploited Crisis: Senator Charles makes a backroom deal with them to attack Rebirth on their own after they failed to pass the background check to be hired by the Republic. The plan was for them to occupy the city until Rebirth could come to liberate it. They would then surrender the city and it would be brought under the Republic's control while the mercenaries are paid loads of mana.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Gothram legitimately considers Allya's offer but gets tricked into attacking anyway. He has to surrender when Gift shows up with his air fleet.
    • After seeing what Allya and the dungeon are capable of he realizes trying to occupy or escape the city is suicide. Instead, he sides with Allya and surrenders after killing the terrorists who freed him.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Attacking adventurers and the merchant's guild caused powerful warriors to retaliate. This naturally made their invasion much harder. As it turns out, this contradicted Gothram's explicate orders.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: While they side with Allya and saved Pyn they still attacked the city and a lot of the residents are mad at them. They aren't able to stay in the city.
  • Punchclock Villain: They have nothing against Allya or the dungeon, they were simply paid to invade the town.
  • Unwitting Pawn: While they are hired by the Republic for a shady job, they don't realize they are set up as decoys.
     Grant the Giant
A legendary mercenary. While not particularly skilled in combat he is a master of logistics and can lead his forces to victory more often than not.
  • Irony: The King hires in to protect the kingdom with the back taxes he strong arms out of Sunrise when he tells them he doesn't have the resources to protect both Sunrise and Rebirth without more funding. When Sunrise launches their coup, Grant is the biggest obstacle to them taking over the capital.
  • Private Military Contractors: More so than other mercenary groups. He leads a full-on army and has his own flotilla of airships, protecting kingdoms that meet his price.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: While he is expensive you get what you pay for and he will refuse all bribes. His officers are similarly incorruptible.
  • The Strategist: He is hired more for his leadership skills than his skill with the sword.

The United Dungeon Council

     Laria

Laria of the Golden Gates

A young member of the UDC. She has become concerned with the recent trend of inaction in the UDC and the boldness of the mortals against dungeon cores.
     Gift (Volume 3 Spoilers)

Gift of the Promise Dungeon

One of the oldest dungeons and is the representative of the Elder Faction. He rarely speaks at the meetings but when he does the others listen.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He rarely speaks at meetings but nobody is willing to argue with him when he does and for good reason.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: Zigzagged. He kicks his ships into high gear when he receives word that the Republic has used another illegal disruptor and is invading the dungeon but by the time he gets there Alexandra had already blown up her own dungeon to kill the invaders. He was able to stop the Scarlet Swords and dig Emilia and the maids out of the rubble.
  • The Dreaded: He is capable of taking on and beating an Erisian Sky Armada of 100 with his own fleet. Everyone in the UDC respects his power.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He has seen what the death of the dungeon advisor will do to a dungeon and would not wish that on even the dungeons he hates the most.
  • The Dreaded Dreadnought: His personal flagship is a dreadnought with cannons the size of houses.
  • Last of His Kind: He is the last of the original generation of dungeons, crafted by the God of Fire himself.

Beings on other worlds

     Arcadia

Arcadia

An EFSN A.I. tasked with maintaining the logistics. She is also Alexandra's ex-girlfriend.
  • Benevolent A.I.: She is technically crazy but has helped advance Earth's development and enabled them to venture into space.
  • The Ghost: Alexandra talks about her quite often but she has never appeared and likely never will.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: She was just a logistics A.I. but became responsible for countless advances, including FTL travel.
  • Sexbot: She likes to date and would use sexbots as bodies when getting intimate.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She is only part of Alexandra's backstory but developed hyperspace travel, which caused several ships' worth of people to become lost on Alcheryos, including Alexandra. The Sagittarius Empire would never have existed otherwise and Alcheryos wouldn't be what it is today.
     God of Fire

The God of Fire

The God who returned to Alcheryos following the Great Night and ushering in the Dawn of Flames. He is credited with restoring Order to the planet and authored the Edicts of the God of Fire, enforced by the Custodians of the Flame.
  • The Ghost: He departed Alcheryos 6,500 years before the start of the story, with his followers left behind to enforce his will.
  • God of Fire: Pretty much implied with the name.
  • Written by the Winners: While he is said to have brought peace back to Alcheryos after Great Night, Alexandra finds evidence to suggest the gods may have caused it in the first place.
     God of Light

The God of Light

Another god who seems to be responsible for Alexandra's fate on Alcheryos.
  • Deus ex Machina: He answers Alexandra's Distress Call when she is being sacrificed. No mention of him was made before that.
  • The Ghost: Alexandra blacked out when he saved her so we never see him.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only interfered once or twice but he was the one who turned Alexandra into a dungeon core, putting the rest of the story into motion.
  • Spanner in the Works: He ruined the Order's plan when he saved Alexandra. Whether he did this intentionally is anyone's guess.
  • Ultimate Job Security: The Custodians of the Flame don't like his interference but he is still a god so they have to put up with it.
