A list of characters appearing in the Teito Monogatari series.

Yasunori Kato

Played by: Kyusaku Shimada (Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis, Tokyo: The Last War), Kazuhiko Nishimura (Teito Monogatari Gaiden), Etsushi Toyokawa (The Great Yokai War)
Voiced by: Kyusaku Shimada (JP), Jeff Winkless (EN)

Both the Big Bad and the protagonist of the series, Kato is an immortal Evil Sorcerer who is out for revenge against the Japanese Imperial Court for conquering and killing his indigenous ancestors 2,000 years ago. He's referred to as an oni, and is proficient in Onmyōdō. He also claims to be a descendant of famous onmyoji Abe no Seimei.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To Keiko. He actually realizes this, and often flirts with her, proposes to marry her, and sometimes even gropes her in order to aggravate her.
  • Abusive Dad: In all versions, Kato kidnaps Yukiko to make her a medium for Lord Masakado. In The Last Megalopolis, he forces Yukiko to burn her hand on a Paper Talisman so that Keiko will let them go. In Doomed Megalopolis, he also tries to sacrifice her to the Underground Dragon after Masakado refuses to awaken. Even though Yukiko turns out not to be his daughter after all, he did all those things to her while he still thought she was.
  • The Ageless: No matter how old he gets, he never looks much older than thirty.
  • Ambiguously Brown: In The Last Megalopolis, his skin is a shade darker than everybody else's. Inverted in Doomed Megalopolis, where he's a shade lighter than everybody else.
  • Anime Hair: After losing his hat in the third episode of Doomed Megalopolis, he grows it out. It sticks straight up.
  • An Arm and a Leg: In most adaptations, Rohan chops his hand off.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: Played with. Most of the powers he is seen using seem evil (like Mind Manipulation via Puppeteer Parasite), but these are all actual forms of eastern magic that any onmyoji can use. Kato just happens to be using them for evil purposes.
  • Badass Cape: That's also an All-Encompassing Mantle.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: His military uniforms, which he's seen wearing most of the time. In The Great Yokai War, he instead wears a black suit with a Badass Longcoat.
  • Badass Native: He's a descendant of the indigenous Japanese people, though which ethnicity was never officially revealed.
  • Badass Long Robe: Wears one of these The Last Megalopolis when he comes back to Tokyo after disturbing the Underground Dragon. It has gold dragons on its shoulders.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: At the end of The Last Megalopolis, he blocks Keiko's tanto by nonchalantly grabbing its blade. His hand bleeds from doing so, however. And he immediately guides her blade into his chest.
  • Big Bad
  • Combat Sadomasochist:
    • At the end of The Last Megalopolis, he not only guides Keiko's knife into his own gut, he gets rather excited when she drives it into him.
    • In the Babylon Tokyo manga, he gets rather aroused when Keiko sets his head on fire to the point of wanting to lick her ear.
    • In The Last War, he finds getting repeatedly whacked over the head with a metal pipe and having part of his face ripped off awfully funny.
  • The Corrupter
    • In Doomed Megalopolis, he flat out admits to Keiko that he wants to corrupt her by making her hate him.
    • In the book series, he manipulates author Yukio Mishima into helping him further his own agenda to weaken Japan's political power.
    • In The Great Yokai War, he's seen trying to lure Kawahime into join him in her Troubled Backstory Flashback. He also captures innocent youkai and forces them to become his Magitek minions.
  • Creepy Monotone: Both Kyusaku Shimada and Etsushi Toyokawa make Kato talk like this unless he has a Freak Out about something. Averted when voiced by Jeff Winkless who made him sound slightly hammier.
  • Creepy Shadowed Under Eyes: In the first two live-action films. In Doomed Megalopolis, his eyebags are red for some reason.
  • Cross-Melting Aura: In The Last War, he's able to burn the Zigzag Paper Tassels right off the door leading to Kouou's meditation chamber. He's also able to set Yukiko's talisman on fire, forcing her to drop it.
  • Dark Is Evil: Most of his powers would be considered "dark" - his main shikigami are crows that arise from black paper, and he's often walking around in a black military uniform or robe. In Doomed Megalopolis, all of his shikigami are black (as opposed to Hirai's white shikigami), and his magic spells are sometimes colored black.
  • Dramatic High Perching: Does this a lot. The box art of The Last War even features him standing around on a high metal tower. In the anime, he stands on poles, roofs, treetops, etc.
  • Emotion Eater: Feeds on hatred.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Depending on the adaptation, he tends to straddle between being outright evil and a Well-Intentioned Extremist.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Kato is generally played or voiced by actors with deep voices. When played/voiced by Kyusaku Shimada, he's also raspy.
  • Eye Scream: In Doomed Megalopolis, Keiko throws a knife at him that goes right through his hand and gouges out his eyeball.
  • Familiar: His shikigami, which often take the form of crows. In Doomed Megalopolis, he also has ones that appear as tar-like Blob Monsters, and a giant one that looks like a manta ray. He also has his fukuchu-mushi which brainwash their hosts. Later, he usually summons a goho doji, which either resembles a squat, child-like creature like in the manganote  or a biomechanical monster like in The Last Megalopolis.
  • Fangs Are Evil: In Doomed Megalopolis, Kato has vampire-like fangs that he bears whenever angry or shouting. The cover of the OVA gives him a mouth full of shark-like teeth. The Last Megalopolis emphasizes his canines sometimes, too.
  • Flaying Alive: At the end of The Last War, Yukiko manages to rip the skin off the left side of his face with a talisman. He just laughs.
  • Good Hurts Evil: In the anime, Kato is killed when Keiko channels the celestial bodhisattva Kannon. Her endless compassion appeases his hatred, which, in this adaptation, he cannot live without.
  • Harmless Electrocution: In most adaptations, he gets struck by a Bolt of Divine Retribution from Masakado after trying to awaken him a second time. In The Last Megalopolis, it just knocks him out. In Doomed Megalopolis, it seems to temporarily turn him into stone.
  • Healing Factor: Implied in most adaptations, due to the immense amount of damage he takes without so much as bleeding. In Doomed Megalopolis, he's actually seen regenerating an eyeball. In the beginning of The Last War, he regrows his entire head!
  • Hiss Before Fleeing: After having his eye gouged out in the third episode of Doomed Megalopolis, he lets out an angry "gagging roar" before retreating.
  • Historical Rap Sheet: Winds up being responsible for the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. In the books, he's also responsible for Yukio Mishima's suicide.
  • Holy Burns Evil: While he doesn't actually burn, he is unable to enter a building that's been sealed off by Paper Talismans.
  • Humanoid Abomination: While Kato is portrayed as an almost normal human in the original novels, the anime and the films prefer to portray him with a much more sinister biology, complete with Tainted Veins and a unnaturally long face.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty:
    • In the Babylon Tokyo manga, Kato manages to tie Keiko to a post using a sticky substance. He then comments about how beautiful she is and caresses her cheek...only for her to beat him up anyway.
    • In Doomed Megalopolis, he ties Keiko up and has his black slime grope her in a vision in order to anger her.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: One of the things that fuels his powerful magic is a diet of human organs.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He gets stabbed a LOT. In The Last Megalopolis, both Rohan and Keiko run him through (although he wanted the latter to stab him). In Doomed Megalopolis, Lord Masakado stabs him through the neck with Narutaki's knife. In the Babylon Tokyo manga, Masakado almost runs him through with his own sword, but Kato manages to get out of Yukiko's grip and escapes.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: In Doomed Megalopolis, he becomes rather impressed with Keiko's strength and starts sending her disturbing visions or making his shikigami grope her in order to provoke her into attacking him. His ultimate goal is to make her hate him so much that she becomes an oni as well, and he can make her his demonic bride in Hell.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: His design in Doomed Megalopolis is largely a caricature of his first live-action actor, Kyusaku Shimada.
  • Killed Off for Real: In Doomed Megalopolis only. The Kannon-possessed Keiko cancels out the hatred fuelling Kato, and he violently dissipates.
  • Kubrick Stare: All the time in all of the films and the anime. The mangas give him a few more facial expressions.
  • Last-Name Basis
  • Lean and Mean: In the films, Kato is always portrayed as rather thin. This is exaggerated in Doomed Megalopolis, where he's practically a Noodle Person. Averted in the mangas, where he's Large and in Charge.
  • Limited Wardrobe: In Doomed Megalopolis, he wears his dark green military uniform for three out of the four episodes, and in The Last War, he never changes his clothes at all. Averted in The Last Megalopolis where he practically changes his clothes every other scene.
  • Loners Are Freaks: In Doomed Megalopolis and The Last War, he works completely by himself. Averted in all other works, where he leads an entire congregation of dark mages.
  • Man on Fire: In the Babylon Tokyo manga, Keiko sets his head on fire by wrapping a lock of her hair around his neck and igniting it.
  • Mind Control: Kato can take control of people, either by using kodoku or by brainwashing.
  • Mind over Matter: He uses this a lot in The Last War, even throwing a car at Nakamura with his mind.
  • Multiple-Choice Past: Thanks to the source materials never being translated, there's a lot of confusion among western audiences about what exactly Kato is.
    • The most common explanation as well as the one on The Other Wiki is that Kato is a descendant of the Native Japanese peoples, as well as the incarnation of their 2,000 year old revenge curse upon their conquerors, the Yamato people. Where the confusion sets in is that there are a lot of sources telling you that Kato is Masakado's curse on the Imperial Courtnote . To make things even more confusing, in the books, Kato would brag about being the incarnation of the curse of other groups conquered (Chinese and Korean) or ostracized (those who practiced forbidden magic) by the imperial court as well. In one of the last books, he seems to Retcon himself into being Masakado himself reborn!note  The Other Wiki suggests that this Kato was simply being compared to Masakado (as they both fought against the central government), but without access the source material, it's difficult to determine if this was a mistranslation or a Series Continuity Error on the book's part.
    • To add to the confusion, the English dub of Doomed Megalopolis created its own exclusive backstory for Kato: he's supposed to be a demon created from the restless souls whose graves were left forgotten.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: His name, Kato Yasunori, is a reference to famous real life onmyoji Kamo no Yasunori.
  • Nightmare Face: Tends to do this a lot.
    • In The Last Megalopolis, Kato's face twists into something demonic after Rohan chops his hand off.
    • In The Last War, Yukiko manages to rip the skin off part of Kato's face, leaving him with a dangling eyeball.
    • Doomed Megalopolis has him making one right on the cover. In the third episode, one of his trippy Mind Rape attacks features his face with bared fangs painted over the ground.
  • No Brows: Completely missing eyebrows in Doomed Megalopolis. In the Babylon Tokyo manga, his eyebrows are burned off at the very end.
  • No-Sell:
    • In The Last Megalopolis, Rohan stabs him in the gut, and he doesn't seem to hurt him at all. He even removes the blade from his own stomach and uses it to stab Narutaki.
    • In The Last War, he seems completely immune to Nakamura's psychic attacks. The worst they even do to him is knock him backward. At one point, Nakamura whacks him over the head repeatedly with a pipe, and all Kato does is laugh!
  • Nonchalant Dodge: When Narutaki tries to stab him in Doomed Megalopolis, he nonchalantly teleports out of the way.
  • Off with His Head!: Sometime prior to The Last War, he had his head chopped off.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Discussed in the books, as a major theme is what it means to demonize someone and what actually makes an oni an oni. In the adaptations, he usually Was Once a Man whose own hatred mutated him into an actual demon.
  • Pointy Ears: In Doomed Megalopolis, his ears are pointier than the other adaptations. And bigger.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: In The Last War and Doomed Megalopolis, Kato rarely engages in hand-to-hand combat, usually allowing his shikigami, magic, and Psychic Powers to do the dirty work.
  • Psychic Nosebleed: As he brings the moon closer to earth in Doomed Megalopolis, he starts bleeding out his nose, as well as his eyes, ears, and throat.
  • Psychic Powers: Usually seen using magic, but has a few powers that can fall under this category. Especially in The Last War, where it seems to be all he uses.
  • Mind Rape: In Doomed Megalopolis, Kato is very fond of giving his victims disturbing hallucinations.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He was born somewhere in the latter half of the 19th century at the latest.
  • Redemption Equals Death: At the end of Doomed Megalopolis, Kato's hatred is appeased, causing him to explode violently.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Whatever Kato's wearing, expect him to look good in it.
  • Super-Toughness: Thanks to the magic potion making him immortal, Kato can take hits that would kill a normal man and keep going.
  • Special Person, Normal Name: "Kato" is a very common Japanese surname.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Kato's eyes turn golden several times in the films and anime, usually when he's about to cast a big spell.
  • Tainted Veins: When trying to move the moon in Doomed Megalopolis.
  • Terse Talker: In the films and the anime, Kato doesn't say too much, not even to his allies. Averted in the printed media, where he has normal conversations with everyone.
  • The Unfettered: Absolutely nothing will stop Kato from trying to destroy Tokyo, whether it be being turned to stone, stabbed in the neck, getting his eye gouged out, nothing. Although channeling a celestial bodhisattva seems to do the trick in the OVA. If he needs somebody to complete this goal, no amount of purification ceremonies or anti-demon talismans will keep him from kidnapping them.
  • The Vamp: Male example; in the printed media, he charms Yukari and eventually asks her out on a date. While there, he tricks her into eating a fukuchu-mushi egg by disguising it as a sweet.
  • Villainous Breakdown: In the climax of the OVA, Kato completely freaks out as the Kannon-possessed Keiko advances on him, and all of his dark magic has no effect on her. He finally has a Villainous BSoD and drops to his knees screaming, not even bothering to try and run away.
  • Villainous Cheekbones
  • Villainous Crush: On Keiko.
  • Villain Protagonist: By Word of God.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He just wants to avenge his ancestors and make the Japanese Imperial Court pay for their past crimes.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Has no qualms about battling Keiko in any media. In The Great Yokai War, he tries to burn Kawahime to death with a wall of fire and also kills his own Perky Female Minion, Agi.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Kidnaps Yukiko in all versions to force her to be Masakado's medium. In the adaptations, he's also done things like force her to burn her hand, or tried to make her a Human Sacrifice. In The Great Yokai War, he also tried to fry the Kid Hero, Tadashi with massive fireballs.
  • Your Head A-Splode: Inverted in The Last War: his head actually implodes after Nakamura vomits psychic waste material down his throat.
  • Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters: In the printed media, Kato actively helps Chinese and Korean guerrilla groups take back their lands from Japanese imperialism. In the mangas, Keiko even befriends a girl who sees Kato as her hero.

Yukari Tatsumiya

Played by: Haruka Sugata
Voiced by: Keiko Han (JP), Joan-Carol O'Connell (EN)

A young girl with psychic abilities, and a descendant of Lord Masakado's. Kato kidnaps her and tries to use her as a medium to try to awaken Masakado. She later has a daughter, Yukiko.

  • Big Brother Worship: Adores Yoichiro and always refers to him in the very respectful "-sama" honorific. In Doomed Megalopolis, she continues to do this, even when he abuses her.
  • Brainwashed: By Kato via fukuchu-mushi.
  • Break the Cutie: Goes insane in Doomed Megalopolis thanks to her Trauma Conga Line and then helplessly watching as Kato targets her own daughter next.
  • Breath Weapon: In The Last Megalopolis, being possessed by Masakado allows her to breathe some sort of steam that knocks over Kato's Perky Female Minion.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: With Yoichiro, which produces Yukiko. In Doomed Megalopolis, their relationship was not at all consensual, with Yoichiro forcing himself on her.
  • Cute and Psycho:
    • While being controlled by Kato in The Last Megalopolis, she too develops a case of Nightmare Face with Occult Blue Eyes, and retrieves Kato's hand for him.
    • In Doomed Megalopolis, she becomes emotionally unstable to the point of almost being Ax-Crazy thanks to her Trauma Conga Line at the hands of Kato and her brother. She's seen brutally butchering fish while pretending to be happy.
  • Damsel in Distress: While being targeted by Kato.
  • Empty Shell: In the last two episodes of Doomed Megalopolis, she's all but catatonic, only speaking when Kato is controlling her via the second fukuchu-mushi that was never removed from her.
  • Famous Ancestor: She's a descendant of Taira no Masakado, which is half the reason Kato thinks she'll be an ideal medium for said samurai.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Inverted. After she's believed to have been impregnated by Kato, abortion is quickly suggested, and she agrees to go through with it, but it doesn't work.
  • Mama Bear: At the end of The Last Megalopolis, she tries to rescue Yukiko along with Yoichiro.
  • Mystical Pregnancy: Everybody assumes her sudden pregnancy is due to Kato's magic. It turns out to be a normal pregnancy after all.
  • Near-Death Experience: As a pre-teen, her brother tried to strangle her, but she survived. In Doomed Megalopolis, it's explained that this is how she got her Psychic Powers.
  • No Periods, Period: Averted in a flashback in Doomed Megalopolis. We see her have her first period in front of a teenaged Yoichiro... who then decides it's a good time as any to try out his choking fetish on her.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: When either possessed by Kato or Masakado in The Last Megalopolis.
  • Psychic Powers: She can see the future in her visions , and act as a medium for spirits of the dead. Kato also uses her power to reattach his hand.
  • Stepford Smiler: In the second episode of Doomed Megalopolis, though she's not very good at hiding her anger.
  • Trauma Conga Line:
    • In all versions, she is kidnapped by Kato, who tries and fails to use her as a medium to revive Masakado. After she is rescued, she is revealed to be pregnant, leading everyone to believe that Kato magically impregnated her. Worried about a potential Fetus Terrible, she tries to get an abortion, but it doesn't work. The printed media make this scenario worse than The Last Megalopolis, as in those versions, Kato was somebody she liked and trusted.
    • Doomed Megalopolis has Kato Mind Rape her several times before forcing the fukuchu-mushi egg down her throat via Forced Kiss. She later coughs up the worm (which has a penis for a head in this version), only to be reinfected by a nurse who is secretly working for Kato. After she is kidnapped, Kato works his magic on her which includes physically raping her by shoving a spell up her crotch. Once she is rescued, she is raped by her brother.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Whenever she throws up a fukuchu-mushi.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: At the end Doomed Megalopolis, she still has that second fukuchu-mushi inside her, and it was never implied to have been discovered let alone removed. And what happened to it after its master was killed?

Yoichiro Tatsumiya

Played by: Junichi Ishida
Voiced by: Kaneto Shiozawa (JP), Kerrigan Mahan (EN)

Yukari's older brother. He works at the Ministry of Finance, and later marries Keiko. His personality changes wildly from adaptation to adaptation. But in all versions, he's Yukiko's real father.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: His portrayals in The Last Megalopolis and Doomed Megalopolis are so opposite of each other, you'd swear you were looking at Mirror Universe counterparts of the same character.
    • Adaptational Heroism: In The Last Megalopolis, he tries to do what he can to protect his family from Kato, despite not knowing how to use magic. At the end of the film, he tries to put Masakado back to sleep all by himself in order to rescue Yukiko.
    • Adaptational Villainy: In Doomed Megalopolis, however, he's a Smug Snake and an abuser. He strangles Yukari as a child, causing her psychic powers to emerge. He also rapes her after she's been rescued from Kato. In the final episode, he tries to kill both Yukari and Yukiko until Narutaki and Rohan stop him. There are parts in the OVA where he starts to show remorse for what he's done, but he usually goes right back to his old ways.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: With Yukari, which produces Yukiko. In Doomed Megalopolis, their relationship was not at all consensual, as he forced himself on Yukari.
  • Erotic Asphyxiation: It's his fetish, and he's not too proud of it. Probably because he tried to enact it on Yukari, which almost killed her.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Has some severe anger issues in Doomed Megalopolis, which usually result in him freaking out at his own friends and family or trying to kill somebody.
  • Happily Married: To Keiko in The Last Megalopolis. Doomed Megalopolis subverts this by showing the two getting along just fine, but then Yoichiro has a Freak Out when he finds out that Keiko is actively protecting Yukari and Yukiko from Kato.
  • Hate Sink: Especially in Doomed Megalopolis. It really says something that he is so loathsome, that he manages makes Kato look likable in comparison.
  • Karma Houdini: Some viewers find that getting beaten up by Narutaki just wasn't an adequate enough punishment for his Doomed Megalopolis incarnation. It should be noted though that the plot of Doomed Megalopolis only loosely adapts the first four books of the novel series, meaning that we don't see the whole story anyways. This is averted in the Tokio Wars manga (which takes place after book four), where he is Killed Off for Real when Yukiko's boyfriend shoots him in the head.
  • Kick the Dog: Does this several times in Doomed Megalopolis, such as when he strangled a prostitute, yelled at Keiko for trying to defend Yukari and Yukiko, and told Narutaki to stop hanging around them.
  • Last-Name Basis: Being the head of the household, he's often called "Tatsumiya."
  • Leeroy Jenkins: In the beginning of The Last Megalopolis, he charges right at Kato with a sword. Narutaki has to hold him down to stop him.
  • Married to the Job: In almost all versions, he spends more time at work than at home. In Doomed Megalopolis, it's implied that he's actively avoiding his family.
  • Pet the Dog: In Doomed Megalopolis, he does have some scenes with Keiko where he's not a complete Jerkass. He even buys her a parasol at one point. Then again, considering he goes back to abusing her after that, it's likely his acts of kindness towards Keiko were just a way of keeping her from turning against him, which is something that a lot of abusers do.
  • Salaryman
  • The Sociopath: In Doomed Megalopolis, he's pretty much a text-book example, where he has very little empathy for others, gets sexually aroused by strangling people, is completely selfish and has very poor impulse control.
  • Tainted Veins: When trying to take on Masakado's spirit in The Last Megalopolis.
  • Took a Level in Badass: At the end of The Last Megalopolis, he tries to make a Heroic Sacrifice by trying to channel the awakening Masakado by himself in order to put him back to sleep and rescue Yukiko.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Keiko implies at the end of The Last Megalopolis that Yoichiro actually has more spiritual strength than even Kato (which is another reason why Kato can't control Yukiko), but doesn't want to use it. Averted in all other media, where Yoichiro doesn't have any spiritual powers, if any.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: After Kato tries to unsuccessfully kidnap Yukiko several times, Yoichiro takes his anger out on a outdoor kamidana that Keiko built to protect the house. As soon as he breaks the thing, its protection is removed, and Kato is able to successfully kidnap Yukiko.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In all versions, he once tried to erotically strangle Yukari as a teen. In Doomed Megalopolis, he tries to strangle a prostitute as well. At the end of the anime series, he tries to shoot Yukari and strangle Yukiko to death.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Tries to strangle Yukiko to death in Doomed Megalopolis until she stops him by calling him "father."

Yukiko Tatsumiya

Played by: Kaho Minami (Tokyo: The Last War)
Voiced by: Wendee Lee (EN)

Yukari's daughter, whom everyone assumes is the product of Kato's dark magic. Later, we find out Yoichiro is her real father. Like her mother, she is targeted by Kato to become a medium for Masakado. In The Last War, she becomes a nurse during World War II where she unfortunately runs into Kato again.

  • Child by Rape: In Doomed Megalopolis, she's the result of Yoichiro raping Yukari.
  • Clothing Damage: As she is about to be sacrificed to the Underground Dragon in Doomed Megalopolis, her clothes magically disappear.
  • Damsel in Distress: Just like her mother, she is kidnapped by Kato, sometimes several times. Justified, since she's only a kid.
  • Good with Numbers: Is actually really good at math. Kato uses this ability of hers to do some calculations for him through Yukari.
  • Human Sacrifice: In Doomed Megalopolis, after failing to awaken Masakado a third time, Kato tries to sacrifice her to the Underground Dragon.
  • Psychic Powers: Like her mother, she can channel spirits. In The Last Megalopolis, she also shows signs of being telekenetic.
  • Who's Your Daddy?: The main reveal in the first film, the anime, and the first few books. When Yukari winds up pregnant, everyone assumed Yukiko was Kato's daughter due to him using his magic on her. But her real father turned out to be Yoichiro. Somewhat spoiled by the films, as Yukiko doesn't particularly look like Kato
  • Trauma Conga Line:
    • In Doomed Megalopolis, she is kidnapped by Kato to serve as Masakado's medium. When that doesn't work, she's kidnapped a second time to serve as a Human Sacrifice. Finally, her real father tries to strangle her to death.
    • In The Last War, she not only has to deal with her city getting bombed by the Allies, but she also has to contend with the fact that Kato's back. Then her new boyfriend, Nakamura, gets badly injured by Kato, her friend gets shot to death, and Nakamura dies in her arms after he defeats Kato.

Junichi Narutaki

Played by: Shiro Sano (The Last Megalopolis)
Voiced by: Kōichi Yamadera (JP), Cam Clarke (EN)

A close family friend of the Tatsumiyas. He has a crush on Yukari and helps fight against Kato.

Yasumasa Hirai

Played by: Mikijiro Hira
Voiced by: Goro Naya (JP), Mike Reynolds (EN)

The leader of the Tsuchimikado Clan, Court Mage to Emperor Meiji, and actual descendant of Abe no Seimei. He leads the fight against Kato and tries to protect Yukari as best he can.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed with the anime. In the novel and film, Hirai is so powerful that Kato himself seems afraid of facing him, but in Doomed Megalopolis, while Hirai remains powerful enough to draw with Kato in a duel, he clearly can't defeat him.
  • Ambiguously Brown: His anime version has a darker skin tone than the rest of characters, but he is clearly Japanese.
  • Big Good: To an extent. Thanks to his status of master onmyoji, Hirai is the only character at the beginning who knows what to do with Kato and the only guy Kato can't curbstomp. At the end, however, he comes short.
  • Cane Fu: In the anime, Hirai impales a shikigami with his cane.
  • Court Mage: He is the leader of the Tsuchimikado Family, which is an onmyodo clan that serves the Emperor.
  • Eyes Always Shut: At the start of the anime, he tends to keep his eyes closed except when talking. He drops this trait after receiving more characterization.
  • Famous Ancestor: Abe no Seimei
  • Magic Knight: In Doomed Megalopolis, he uses a daikyū (a type of longbow) to fire a magic arrow at Kato.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Justified. Hirai sacrifices himself on purpose to show his devotion to the Meiji Emperor, who has just passed away, and also uses the ritual to divine the year of Tokyo's destruction.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: His surname comes probably from Teiichi Hirai, a famous Japanese scholar who taught Hiroshi Aramata himself at the Keio University.
  • Large Ham: Hirai usually is a suave old gentleman, but he becomes quite intense in really serious situations.
  • Light Is Not Good: Played with in the anime. He's supposed to be the good sorcerer and is dressed in bright white, but he is still beaten by the dark and evil Kato because in fact he is not morally better than him; they share the same magic, which is not inherently good or evil. It just so happens that the power of the curse fueling Kato is far older and stronger than anything Hirai or his ancestors have encountered, giving Kato the advantage.
  • Miniature Senior Citizen: Hirai is pretty short in the anime, but not absurdly so.
  • Old Master
  • Squishy Wizard: Subverted in Doomed Megalopolis. While not a hand-to-hand fighter, he is incredibly agile and resilient for a man of his age, being able to move faster than a magic blast and survive to an arrow through his torso. Averted in The Last Megalopolis, where he is never shown on the battlefield.
  • Wizard Beard: In Doomed Megalopolis, he has a white fluffy beard, complete with similar long hair.
  • You Monster!: Calls Kato a monster in both the anime and the film.

Koda Rohan

Played by: Koji Takahashi
Voiced by: Yusaku Yara (JP), Sam Fontana (EN)

Famous Real Life Meiji Era writer and friend to the Tatsumiyas. He also joins the fight to protect Tokyo from Kato.

  • Badass Normal: Can't usually use magic, but he manages to chop dozens of shikigami with his wakizashi and even attacks Kato a few times.
  • Demoted to Extra: While he has an active role in the novel and live action film, in Doomed Megalopolis, most of his actions are given to Kamo, a fictional onmyoji.
  • Historical Domain Character: Real Life author of several short stories and novels.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: He not only challenges Kato several times, but also manages to cut his hand off!
  • Hot-Blooded: Doesn't care about the risks as long as he has his reliable sword.
  • Magic Knight: Is already a skilled swordsman, and later on in the novel he learns magic.
  • Warrior Poet: Not at all afraid to challenge demonic sorcerers by himself.

Keiko Mekata-Tatsumiya

Played by: Mieko Harada

A shrine maiden and descendant of Lord Masakado. She is summoned by said ancestor to help defend his grave from Kato. She later marries Yoichiro and confronts Kato personally.

  • Clothing Damage: Steadily loses her clothing while fighting Kato and his creatures. She's completely naked at the end, while channeling Kannon.note
  • Cool Old Gal: In Teito Monogatari Gaiden, she fights against Kato while being nearly one hundred years old...possibly even older!
  • Famous Ancestor: Like the Tatsumiyas, she's also a descendant of Taira no Masakado.
  • Fangs Are Evil: In Doomed Megalopolis, Kato tortures her in a vision in an attempt to get her to hate him. Just as she's giving in to the dark side and breaks free, she suddenly grows fangs.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: In the climactic battle at the end of the anime, Keiko ends completely naked due to Clothing Damage.
  • Good Hurts Evil: In the anime, Keiko channels Kanon's infinite compassion, which kills Kato.
  • Happily Married: To Yoichiro in The Last Megalopolis. Doomed Megalopolis subverts this by showing the two getting along just fine, but then Yoichiro has a Freak Out when he finds out that Keiko is actively protecting Yukari and Yukiko from Kato.
  • Magic Knight: Her magic granted by Masakado is strong enough to rival Kato's powers, and she also fights with a naginata.
  • Mama Bear: Actively tries to protect Yukiko from Kato, especially in the anime.

Taira no Masakado

A Real Life samurai who lived during the Heian period in 8th century Japan. He rebelled against the central government after it got involved in an ongoing feud he was having with his neighbors and family. He was eventually captured and executed. He serves as Tokyo's Guardian Entity so long as his grave is maintained and no one tries to disturb his rest. Should he be awakened, he will wind up destroying everything within sight. Kato seeks to do just that, which annoys Masakado quite a bit.

  • Big Good: Arguably.
  • Cool Horse: Masakado sends one to Keiko at the fourth episode of Doomed Megalopolis. It appears as a furry, equine mystic being.
  • Deity of Human Origin: Demonstrates godlike powers in most adaptations, especially Doomed Megalopolis. The Real Life legend of him suggests his apotheosis happened not long after his death, as his disembodied head flew off by itself.
  • The Ghost: In most media. Subverted in the anime and the Babylon Tokyo manga in which he appears under the form of a ghostly samurai.
  • Historical Domain Character
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: In many adaptations, especially Doomed Megalopolis, it's implied that he's had a Heel–Face Turn and no longer wants to destroy anything. This is why he summons Keiko to defend his grave against Kato.
  • Mad God: If he is even awakened.
  • Samurai
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Could qualify as this, but the twist is that he's not inherently evil, and serves as a Guardian Entity so long as his rest isn't disturbed.

Shigemaru Kuroda

Played by: Sanshi Katsura
Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata (JP), Steve Kramer (EN)

A Feng Shui master who comes to Tokyo to investigate the disturbance in the city's energy flows. He ends up being drawn into the fight against Kato when he finds out the dark wizard is tampering with the Underground Dragon.

  • Badass Normal: He may pass as a bumbling character at times, but he can hold his own when the occasion requires it. In the anime, he has mystical powers and can even fend off shikigami with chants and salt. In The Last Megalopolis, he managed to fend off Kato's giant guardian statue and kill it with a piece of wood.
  • Battle Aura: In the anime, he gets a powerful-looking one when using his magic skills to check the spiritual energy of the area, complete with a mystical sign appearing on his forehead.
  • Geek Physiques: Short and stout.
  • Hand Seals: Uses them for the aforementioned technique.
  • Paranormal Investigation: Particularly anything to do with Feng Shui.
  • The Smart Guy: Has a deep knowledge in Feng Shui and magic affairs, helping Keiko and the rest with those fields.

Gakutensoku

The first robot to ever be created in Japan. Built by biologist Dr. Makoto Nishimura, it could make different facial expressions, move its hands, and write using its pen mechanism. In Teito Monogatari, it was reformatted into a construction robot when the subway excavation sites were blocked by Kato's minions.

Kyoka Izumi

Played by: Tamasaburo Bando V

A Real Life fortune teller and author. He tells Keiko her fortune and tells her that Kato is targeting her. He also gives her a cryptic clue about how to defeat him.

Kamo

Voiced by: Ken Yamaguchi (JP), Kirk Thornton (EN)

One of Hirai's students in Doomed Megalopolis, he takes over protecting the Tatsumiyas after Hirai's death.

  • Canon Foreigner: An original character to Doomed Megalopolis.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Rarely opens his eyes unless he's about to attack.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Uses a wakizashi.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Is brutally splattered into a red mist when he charges at Kato.
  • Magic Knight: He's not only a pretty strong onmyoji (strong enough to dispel Kato's illusions and almost banish Kato into an endless void), he's also pretty handy with a blade.
  • Mauve Shirt: The only Tsuchimikado member with a name aside from Hirai.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: After Kamo no Yasunori, the real life onmyoji who lent his name to Kato.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: Has these on top of a curious yellow sclera, not unlike Hirai.
  • Only One Name: We never know him by anything except "Kamo."
  • Shoot the Dog: Was perfectly willing to sacrifice Yukiko in order to banish Kato forever.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Killed in the same episode that we were getting to know him in.
  • The Worf Effect: Despite his power, he ends up being gruesomely killed by Kato anyway.

Yuko Nakamura

Played by: Masaya Kato

A young man with powerful psychic abilities, he tries to defend the city from a revived Kato in The Last War. He ends up courting an adult Yukiko.

  • Blessed with Suck: Every time he uses his psychic power, some sort of waste product builds up in his body, making him horribly sick.
  • Canon Foreigner: Only appears in The Last War.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The waste product that he's seen throwing up. He spits it into Kato's mouth, killing him.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: After defeating Kato, he dies in Yukiko's arms from his battle wounds.
  • Psychic Powers: Usually in the form of telekinesis.
  • Super-Soldier
  • Tested on Humans: His flashbacks imply that he was experimented on as a child.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: In the form of throwing up the psychic waste product. Justified when he has to cough it up into Kato's mouth.
  • The Worf Effect: Despite his supernatural abilities, he usually ends up being no match for Kato and gets brutally beaten by him.
