Ring King and his Wives

    Satou

Satou Haruto, the Ring King

Voiced by: Gen Satō (JP), Corey Wilder (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/satou_2.png

The Childhood Friend of Hime, he has been in love with her since he first saw her appear in a flash of light ten years ago. He follows her through a portal back to her homeland, accidentally interrupting her wedding—and receiving the power she was supposed to grant to someone else.

  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: To quote the Elder, Satou is "well-equipped" below the belt.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In the early volumes, he'll gladly sneak up on a distracted enemy to attack them from behind if the opportunity presents itself. Said opportunities become less and less frequent as the series goes on, and he generally sticks to head-on fighting after a certain point.
  • Heroic BSoD: He experiences this when he and his Amazon Brigade's first real encounter with the enemy leader only results in said leader only being injured a little.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: The Ring of Light lets Satou imbue his weapons with a purifying light that is deadly to monsters of the Abyss.
  • Hollywood Homely: Satou is treated as looking plain in-universe. Saphira insults him by calling him a homely man when they first meet, and while his brides leap to his defense, none of them can refute the accusationnote . Despite this, Satou is not drawn to be any uglier than Marse or the other male characters.
  • Idiot Hero: Downplayed. While far from stupid, Satou makes some very boneheaded decisions during the early volumes, such as approaching a wild bear in the belief that it's safe to do so just because it's not an Abyss beast, or trying to be inconspicuous by imitating a birdcall in a place where there aren’t any birds. These decisions are met with incredulity from those around him. Fortunately, he grows out of this over time.
  • Magic Knight: He grows into a skilled swordsman over the course of the series, and the rings literally put tremendous elemental magic at his fingertips. By the time of his final showdown with the Abyss King, he can wipe out dozens of monsters at once with powerful Sword Beams and engage the Abyss King in a full-on Wizard Duel.
  • Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration: Sato is married to five different beautiful women who are ready and willing to have sex with him, which will grant him incredible power. He has moral objections to the whole arrangement, so he is very hesitant to cross that line. It's implied more than once that he's keeping himself in check with masturbation.
Saphir: [thinking] Looks like he got a load off...
  • Nice Guy: Satou, despite truly loving Hime, seeks to treat each girl fairly and with the respect they deserve. He doesn't want to take their feelings or positions for granted and would rather earn his own strength to be worthy of them.
  • No Full Name Given: For quite some time, only his last name, Satou, is given. Chapter 56 reveals that his first name is Haruto.
  • Skewed Priorities: In the Land of Fire arc, he refuses to use magic to give himself an edge against Granart and rejects her offer to throw the fight, wanting to beat her fair and square on his own merits. This is partially motivated by a desire to earn Granart's respect, but primarily he wants to look cool for Hime.

    Hime

Krystal "Hime" Novaty, Princess of Nokanatika

Voiced by: Akari Kitou (JP), Ezra Vervin (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krystal_0.jpg

Satou's childhood friend, she is a mysterious girl who appeared one day with her grandfather. In truth she is the princess of the magical land of Nokanatika, sent to Earth to hide her. Ten years later, she returns to marry a man and give him the power of the Ring King. When Satou follows her, she bestows the power on him instead.

  • Ancestral Weapon: The Nokanatika Staff of Light is a Magic Staff that's been passed down in her family for generations. She takes up this staff when it becomes apparent that she and the other princesses need to train themselves to fight alongside Satou.
  • Arranged Marriage: She was supposed to marry Marse, a prince of the Empire, in order to name him the Ring King, but when Satou interrupted she gave him the power instead.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Played with in chapter 16. Hime takes one gulp of a goblet of wine and immediately gets plastered, forcing Satou to take her back to her room. However, Granart later reveals that she spiked Hime's drink to get her in the mood, leaving it ambiguous as to how much of her current state is a result of low alcohol tolerance or of being drugged.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She first met Satou ten years prior to the main story, and the two are clearly in love with one another.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She frequently asserts her position as the Top Wife (especially the fact that they will have Their First Time with each other) and gets jealous when the other Princesses get to close to Satou. Saphir calls her out on this as her ultimately not trusting her fellow Princesses or Satou so she agrees to share him with them. Exploited when she makes a Face–Heel Turn, but instead of joining the Abyss King she instead desires to lock herself and Satou into an empty void so they can be together forever
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Hime's eyes darken and lose their shine when she undergoes a temporary Face–Heel Turn.
  • Evil Costume Switch: When a minion of the Abyss King convinces her to give in to the power of darkness, Hime switches out her normal high school uniform for a very skimpy black outfit, with her crown hairpin and her staff turning black as well.
  • First Girl Wins: Satou makes it clear from the start, to absolutely everyone, that he loves Hime first and foremost. The other princesses don't mind too much, but they are annoyed that they're taking too long to have sex since no one else can until they do. Despite an interruption or two, courtesy of Amber, it takes over 50 chapters for this trope to be realized.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Despite Satou going to another world for her and repeatedly kissing her and telling her he loves her most, Hime feels guilty over dragging him into this quest and is scared that one of the other princesses will steal him away from her. Exploited when a minion of the Abyss King exploits these insecurities in an attempt to invoke a Face–Heel Turn
  • Meaningful Name: Alabaster gave her the name "Hime" in Japan, which literally means "princess."
  • Modest Royalty: Hime spent ten years living incognito in Japan, and she continues to wear her high school uniform on most occasions after returning to her world.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She has a large chest, and her main outfit exposes a lot of cleavage.
  • Signature Headgear: Hime is never seen without her crown-shaped hairpin. Whether she's bathing, trying to get intimate with Satou, or undergoing an Evil Costume Switch during a temporary Face–Heel Turn, the hairpin stays on.
  • Top Wife: She often asserts her position as the one Satou loves most, but later subverted when she later decides to stop hogging him to herself and agrees to share with her fellow wives.
  • White Magician Girl

    Nephrites

Nephrites, Princess of Romca

Voiced by: Miyuri Shimabukuro (JP), Megan Shipman (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/neph_1.jpg

Princess of the elf kingdom of Romca, and theoretically the keeper of the Ring of Wind. In practice, she is a shut-in who never leaves her room, and her petrified parents still hold the Ring of Wind.

  • Ambiguous Innocence: She acts the most childish of the princesses, but there are some signs she's playing this up to sneak past Krystal and get closer to Satou. Krystal's sister, in particular, warns her that Nephrites' type can easily surprise you.
  • Barrier Warrior: Once she unlocks her wind magic, Nefritis mainly uses it to protect herself and her friends from harm, such as by surrounding people with protective wind barriers or conjuring gusts to deflect projectiles. This reaches its zenith during the battle for the Sorcerer's Spire, when she conjures a Vortex Barrier around the Spire to keep an entire army of Abyss beasts at bay.
  • Blow You Away: Eventually she starts learning to use the Ring of Wind for herself. She takes to it like a fish to water, quickly learning to create barriers of wind that deflect enemy attacks and even to fly.
  • Covert Pervert
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Played for Laughs. There's a Running Gag where Nefritis will sport such eyes whenever she makes any sort of public appearance, reflecting her anxiety at having to stand in front of a crowd.
  • Flight: She figures out how to fly using the Ring of Wind by chapter 42, though it requires intense concentration and she'll fall if that concentration is broken.
  • Hikikomori: She stayed holed up in her room for decades, refusing to step outside. Her brother encouraged this as he thought she'd always be safe if she was terrified of leaving. Ironically, this actually works to her advantage once the team starts going to weirder locations; she doesn't see much of a difference between exploring her own kingdom or a long-dead ruin on the other side of the world—they're both outside her room, and therefore basically the same to her.
  • Mundane Utility: She occasionally uses her wind magic to help others cool off by blasting them with a refreshing breeze.
  • Older Than They Look: She looks about eighteen, but is actually fifty-four. This tends to get lampshaded whenever the others are parenting her, despite her being older than nearly all of them.
  • Shrinking Violet: Nefritis is painfully shy, so much so that she cowered behind her throne when she first met Satou and later fainted when she realized they were (seemingly) alone in the same room. She grows more confident once she starts travelling with Satou and befriending the other princesses, but even so she remains prone to hiding behind the nearest nonthreatening person or object when meeting new people.

    Granart

Granart, Princess of Needakitta

Voiced by: Hitomi Ueda (JP), Cassie Ewulu (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/granart.jpeg

Princess of the catfolk kingdom of Needakitta, and keeper of the Ring of Fire. She spends all her time fighting off potential suitors in the arena.

  • Best Her to Bed Her: Needakitta tradition states that the princess can only marry one who defeats her in combat. Granart saw how that left her parents in a loveless marriage, and resolves to never lose to anyone. She is willing to throw the match for Satou, though, but he ends up earning her hand by defeating a dark knight and then beating her fair and square. A gender flipped example later occurs when she successfully challenges Satou to a duel in order to get him to finally consummate their relationship.
  • Cats Hate Water: She doesn't like to get wet, as the others discover while relaxing at a beach in the Land of Water.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: She was already a formidable warrior and swordswoman to start out with, but as time goes on, she realizes that simple strength and martial skill won't be enough to stop the Abyss King's monsters. She then starts training to unlock her people's forgotten magical abilities. She succeeds in Chapter 43, becoming a Magic Knight who can increase her own strength and speed dramatically, make herself hot enough to ignite flammable substances on contact, and superheat her blade to increase its cutting power.
  • Exposed to the Elements: When the party enters the dwarven tunnels to bypass the Abyss King's monsters, Granart is walking around in her normal duds while everyone else has put on heavy cloaks to keep themselves warm in the subterranean chill. She explains that the ring of fire is keeping her warm.
  • Fiery Sensuality: She's the princess of the Land of Fire, wields the Ring of Fire, has reddish skin, and is by far the most passionate and sexually assertive of Satou's wives. She also wears the least amount of clothing.
  • Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards: She might be one of the best warriors in the world, but that's just not enough when magic is taken into account. With Nephrites' help and the Fire Ring, she begins to relearn the long-forgotten art of catfolk magic.
  • Magic Enhancement: Her fire magic lets her put her body into overdrive, drastically increasing her strength and speed for a time.
  • Playing with Fire: This was supposed to be her element, but the catfolk species has long forgotten how to use magic. Until she regains the ability to use it.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: In a spa, she shocks Satou by not bothering with a towel before forcing him, a relative stranger, to give her a massage.
  • Stripperiffic: Her standard outfit is basically a Chainmail Bikini, leaving little to the imagination.
  • Warrior Prince: Granart's people have a proud warrior culture and as their princess, she was trained to be the greatest warrior among them. Whereas the other princesses prefer to hang back and use magic during battle, Granart gets right in the thick of it with her sword, cutting her foes to pieces.

    Saphir

Saphir, Princess of Maasa

Voiced by: Ai Kakuma (JP), Brittney Karbowski (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saphir.jpg

Princess of the dragon kingdom of Maasa, and one of the twin keepers of the Ring of Water. She marries Satou the instant he arrives so that her twin sister doesn't have to do it.

  • Barely-There Swimwear: Wears a tiny string bikini to the beach. She says she'd normally be nude, but wore something for the sake of her guests.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: She's the only princess to have actual magical training and has a keen mind for politics, but spends most of her time lazing about doing nothing.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Lazy Bum: Saphir is the laziest of the five princesses. More often than not, she'll be sitting around doing nothing while the others are all busy doing something. This idleness frequently puts her at odds with the much more active Granart.
  • Making a Splash: The Ring of Water allows her to control and manipulate water, naturally.
  • The Not-Love Interest: In spite of being one of Satou's wives, she doesn't show as much affection or lust as the others, often snarking at them.
  • Petite Pride: Saphir has the smallest bust out of Satou's wives. This doesn't bother her at all, though she does jokingly suggest that Satou must have a thing for big-breasted women.
  • Scaled Up: She can transform into a gigantic dragon using the Ring of Water's power.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She never attempts to cover herself and always stands proud whenever she is naked.
  • Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: She is rendered naked after turning into a dragon and back.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: In one chapter she shapes a mass of water into a draconic claw, which she uses to pick up and crush a monster.
  • Skinny Dipping: Says she prefers to do this when swimming. She only wore a bikini because she had guests.
  • Tears of Joy: Saphir, having been depressed ever since she and the other princesses were sent to Earth, weeps happily when she realizes that they now have a way to go home. Later, she tears up in relief when Alabaster assures her that her homeland has not fallen to the Abyss King's monsters.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: The second she confirms Satou's identity, she slips the Water Ring onto his finger and kisses him, sealing their marriage. She did this half so that her sister (who is in love with someone else) didn't have to, and half to keep the Empire from interfering.

    Amber

Amber, Princess of Idonokan

Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu (JP), Vanessa Benoit (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amber_98.jpg

A robotic copy of the last princess of the dwarf kingdom of Idonokan, and keeper of the Ring of Earth. She was designed to stay safe and in hiding until the Ring King arrived, at which point she would serve him unconditionally.

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: She gains the ability to summon a skyscraper-sized golem in chapter 60, two chapters before the party ventures into the Abyss King's realm for the final battle.
  • Artificial Human: As the dwarves were dying out, they knew they couldn't protect the Earth Ring, so they constructed Amber and sent her to Earth to keep her safe.
  • Dishing Out Dirt
  • Eating Machine: Amber is perfectly capable of eating, despite being an android. She devours at least ten plates' worth of bread while the party is stopped at an inn, much to Granart's bemusement.
  • Eye Beams: She can shoot giant lasers out of her eyes. She can also shoot them out of the gem on her chest.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Her pupils seem to have an inverted diamond shape. Whether the actual dwarves did too is unknown.
  • Mundane Utility: Her Chest Blaster's emitter can be used as a light source.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: She apparently has a working uterus, and casually asks Satou to save something from his first time with Krystal so that she can use it to make a baby.
  • Robo Speak: Downplayed. While Amber generally talks like a normal person, she occasionally speaks in a more stilted and robotic manner. For example, when Amber privately demonstrates to Satou that her body is anatomically correct, she takes note of his reaction with a deadpan "Ring King excitement confirmed".
  • Robotic Spouse: She was built specifically to marry the Ring King and help him save the world. She's quite happy to meet Satou and finally fulfill her duty, as she's been waiting for hundreds of years to do so.
  • Robot Wizard: She's a Magitek android who can cast magic using the Ring of Earth.
  • Running Gag: She just can't stop unintentionally barging in on Satou and Hime's "us time", can she?
  • Super-Strength: Being a robot, Amber is much stronger than she looks. Granart discovers this when she challenges Amber to a sparring match and is quickly Punched Across the Room.
  • Third-Person Person: She occasionally refers to herself in the third person.
  • Tron Lines: Her dress has patterns which resemble glowing lines of circuitry. It's easier to see this in the coloured illustrations than in black-and-white.
  • Unwanted False Faith: Amber was sent to Earth hundreds of years ago. The people of that time mistook her for some kind of god or youkai and placed her in a shrine, a fact which seems to embarrass her when she relates her past to Satou.

Allies

    Gramps

Sage Alabaster

Voiced by: Shigeru Chiba (JP), Max Hartman (EN)

Supposedly Hime's grandfather, he is actually a wizard and a sage sent to protect her in Japan.

  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: The previous keeper of the Wind Ring a princess, fell in love with a human traveler; their relationship fell apart because the elves thought he might just be out for the Ring. When the princess hears the name "Alabaster," Smaragdi finally realizes that he was her lost love.
  • The Archmage: The most powerful magic-user in the kingdom, and the one who teaches everyone else about magic when necessary.
  • Bullet Dodges You: He protects Satou from an assassin at one point by using his magic to stop the assassin's arrow in its tracks.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He frequently uses his magic to erect walls of rock during battle, either to keep enemies at bay or to trap them within a killing field.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: When he encounters his still youthful elven love as an old man, he avoids revealing his identity and focuses on giving her closure so she could move on.
  • Light 'em Up: He smites the Abyss King with a Pillar of Light while coming to the party's rescue.
  • Mr. Exposition: Alabaster is a wise old sage who traveled the world in his youth. If someone needs to explain things about the world of Arnulus to Satou, nine times out of ten it will be Alabaster who shoulders the burden.
  • Parental Substitute: Raised Hime while they were hiding on Earth and Satou even calls him "Gramps".
  • Wizard Classic: Alabaster is the spitting image of the archetypal wizard, being a wise old man who wears heavy robes, wields a magical staff, has a full beard, and is very knowledgeable about the workings of magic. The only thing he lacks is the pointy hat.

    Marse

Prince Marse

Voiced by: Shogo Sakata (JP), Jeff Plunk (EN)

A prince of the Empire, and the man who Krystal was supposed to marry and name the Ring King. Marse takes losing that power in stride, though he had his own reasons for wanting it.

  • The Bus Came Back: Marse is a regular character for the first four volumes of the series. Then the Abyss King awakens early, and Alabaster sends Satou and the princesses to Earth to keep their rings out of the Abyss King's hands. While Alabaster assures everyone that Marse is safe when they return in volume 6, Marse himself is not present at the time and does not re-enter the plot until the very end of volume 8.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Volume 4 gives a lot of focus to Marse, delving into his backstory, exploring his complicated relationships with his family and loved ones, and revealing his private insecurities.
  • Diplomatic Cover Spy: Marse was sent to Maasa as a diplomatic envoy so he could spy on the kingdom. Saphira falling in love with him at first sight made his job easier, but then he fell in love with her too, and he couldn’t bring himself to spy on her people anymore. Noticing this, the empire recalled Marse.
  • Heroic Bastard: The Emperor mentions that he is the son of a mistress, and only has his title by the Emperor's whim.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His name is spelt as "Marth" in one of the bonus stories from the early volumes.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: He fully admits to Satou that he's happy he wasn't named the Ring King, since that's a lot of responsibility for one man.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His given name is Marmarugias, but everyone calls him Marse.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: His idea of a clever disguise is to put on a mask which doesn't even fully cover his face. It fools nobody, not that he notices.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: The reason he wanted to be the Ring King was to invoke this. He was in love with one of the princesses of Maasa, but she was promised to the future Ring King. They thought that if he became the Ring King, they could be together. She is initially pissed that he broke his promise, but once Saphir marries the Ring King in her place, they realize they can just get married normally.
  • Warrior Prince: While he may not be a general like his elder brother, Marse is nevertheless a skilled swordsman. He teaches Satou how to wield a sword and fights alongside him for much of the series.

    Jade

Jade, Prince of Romca

Voiced by: Masaaki Mizunaka (JP)

Nefritis's older brother. In the absence of their parents, Prince Jade is the de facto ruler of Romca.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Jade is a weird creep who serves as the butt of many jokes. He's also a skilled fighter, as seen on the few occasions where he takes part in battle.
  • Incest-ant Admirer: Nefritis is clearly disturbed by Jade's delusional and borderline incestuous obsession with her. When Jade approaches Satou following everyone's victory over the Abyss King and suggests that Nefritis must want to return home to be with her beloved brother, Nefritis reacts with a blunt "Ew. No way." and puts Satou between herself and Jade, much to Jade's dismay.
  • I Reject Your Reality: He deludes himself into thinking that Nefritis never left and is still shut up in her room during the time between Satou's first and second visits to Romca. He forbids anyone from opening the door to her room on the grounds that, if the room remains closed, they can't prove she isn't inside it. Seeing the real Nefritis again throws him for a loop.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: He is set against letting Satou marry Nefritis at first, partially because he believes he's honouring their parents' wishes by protecting her from the outside world, partially because he wants to keep Nefritis for himself. He goes so far as to have Satou thrown in a dungeon, ostensibly to wait until Nefritis is of a reasonable age to marry... by which point, Satou would either be dead or a shriveled old man.
  • Royal Rapier: He's an elven prince, and he wields a rapier while fighting the Abyss Knight that's trying to take the Rings of Wind.
  • Spell Blade: He can imbue his rapier with wind magic, though it doesn't help much against the Abyss Knight.

    The Elder

Elder of Lomka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/towr_peridot_tvt2.png
Voiced by:

The oldest elf in Lomka, and therefore one of the most respected... despite many of her bizarre actions.

  • Ancient Conspiracy: She was actually the first Wind Princess, who married the original Ring King. When he went mad with power, she and the other princesses killed him. She is the last person alive who remembers what happened.
  • Dirty Old Woman: She is very open and interested in studying sex, examining Satou, and still says that her being a lust object of the original Ring King was one of her most exquisite sensations of her long life.
  • Fetish: She says that while the original Ring King turning into an animal driven only by lust was horrifying, it was also really hot. The current generation are not amused.
  • Jerkass Realization: In chapter 40, the Elder realizes that locking Satou and the princesses up in her lab and trying to force them to have sex against their will was a pretty shitty thing to do. She doesn't let them out, of course, but she does stop gassing them with aphrodisiacs and leaves them to their own devices, trusting in them to find a way out on their own.
  • No Name Given: For some reason, she is only known as The Elder; later averted when it's revealed to be Peridot.
  • Precursor Heroes: She is one of the five original ring princesses who married the first Ring King and saved the world from the Abyss King in ages past.
  • Time Abyss: Being well over 500 years old, the Elder is the oldest living person in the world and the only one with firsthand knowledge of the original Ring King's war against the Abyss King. A flashback to the war shows that, beyond her skin darkening over the intervening centuries, she looks the same now as she did back then.
  • The Wonka: She has a bizarre sense of dress and is quite open about studying sex, but she's the oldest elf around, and that means she commands respect whether everyone else wants her to or not.

    Smaragdi

Smaragdi, Princess of Lomka

Voiced by: Yumi Hara (JP), Marianne Bray (EN)

The previous Wind Princess, she fell in love with a human traveler. When the distrust of her people ruined her relationship, she fled in shame, passing the ring to her younger sister—Nephrites' mother.

  • Blow You Away: As an Abyss Knight, she wields formidable wind magic that can be used to fly, rip a man apart, block weapon strikes, toss people around, and tear open holes in the Vortex Barrier surrounding Romca so she and her demons can invade the city. Much later, she's shown using her wind magic to save Alabaster and Marse from falling to their deaths by creating air currents to slow their descent.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: She fell under the sway of one of the Abyss King's dark rings and became an Abyss Knight. She is freed of the ring's influence when Satou shatters her mask.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: She's also known as "Sumaragdi"?
  • Mayfly–December Romance: When she reunites with Alabaster after fifty years of separation, she's as youthful as she was back then, while he's grown into an elderly man. This does not deter her love for him in any way, much to his dismay.
  • Razor Wind: She can use her wind magic to slice a man into bloody chunks and snap a light-infused halberd in half.
  • The Resenter: Her anger over her lost love led to her being corrupted by one of the Abyssal King's dark rings.
  • Samus Is a Girl: As an Abyss Knight, she wears a mask and armored robes which obscure her figure and identity. Satou assumes her to be male while fighting her, and is quite surprised when he regains consciousness after the battle to discover that she's really a woman.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Once she's freed of the dark ring's control and realizes that Alabaster is her lost love, she begins following him everywhere, watching over him from a distance. Alabaster is more than a little creeped out when he realizes that she's been doing this.
  • Starter Villain: She's the main antagonist of the first two volumes, being the Abyss Knight who attacked both Nokanatika and Romca to kill Satou and obtain the Rings of Light and Wind.
  • Yandere: She is very clingy with Alabaster, despite the fact that he just can't keep up with her sexually any more. She apparently has potions for that.

    Morion

Morion Ravri Novaty, Princess of Nokanatika

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/towr_morion_tvt.png
Voiced by: Miyu Tomita (JP)

Krystal's younger sister. They aren't particularly close due to being apart for ten years. Morion has learned magic under Alabaster, and offers to teach Krystal.

  • The Gadfly: She spends most of her time messing with Satou's harem (and specifically Krystal) for her own amusement.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: In chapter 44, Morion reminds Satou that he's focusing all his attention on Krystal and should consider showing his other brides some affection. She then suggests that he show her some love too. When Satou reacts to this suggestion with incredulity, Morion prances away while claiming that she was just kidding to hide the fact that his rejection stung.
  • Loophole Abuse: In chapter 45, Morion warns Krystal to keep her guard up because, now that Krystal is no longer insisting on being first in line for Satou's heart, all the other girls are now rivals for his affection. Morion then makes it clear that she's going to be gunning for Satou too, and when Krystal protests at this since Morion isn't a ring princess, Morion reminds her that there's no rule against the Ring King taking extra wives outside the five princesses.
  • Magic Staff: She wields a staff to work her magic, and she can ride on it like a witch's broom.
  • The Resenter: Downplayed, but she is annoyed that while Krystal was kept safe in another world, Morion was put under a strict training regime to learn magic.

    Saphira

Saphira, Princess of Maasa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/towr_saphira.png
'Voiced by: Yūko Ōno (JP), Hannah Alyea (EN)

Saphir's twin sister, she was supposed to be the Princess of Water. Saphir stole the ring and married Satou so that she wouldn't have to.

  • Arranged Marriage: She was promised to the Ring King before the king had even been chosen. Marse decided to become the Ring King so that they could be together; she was pissed when he broke his promise by allowing Satou to take the power instead. Once she has a chance to calm down, she and Marse simply get married normally.
  • Damsel in Distress: She is taken hostage by the Fortune-teller's kraken at the climax of Volume 4. Satou manages to free her from the monster's grasp.
  • Happily Married: She and Marse get married near the end of the Maasa arc. Saphir is a little annoyed when she realizes that they're already in a happy sexual relationship while Saphir isn't, despite being married earlier.
  • I Want Grandkids: Or rather, I Want Nieces and Nephews. In chapter 49 she goes off on Satou over the fact that he hasn't slept with Saphir yet, angrily pointing out that he has a duty to put a bun in her sister's oven and continue the Maasa royal line.

Antagonists

    The Abyss King
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/towr_abyss_king_tvt2.png
Voiced by:Tomoaki Maeno (JP), Bradley Gareth (EN)

The dark master of the Abyss beasts who once menaced the world ages ago. He was defeated by the original Ring King and ring princesses, but not destroyed. Now, centuries later, his return is imminent...

  • Ancient Evil: He arose centuries ago and nearly brought the world to ruin before the first Ring King rallied the nations of the world to drive him back.
  • Barrier Maiden: It turns out he was holding back the ravenous void of the primal Abyss with his very existence. Once Satou and Hime kill him, the primal Abyss begins to rage out of control, though it is quickly dealt with through the combined power of the rings.
  • Big Bad: The entire plot is about stopping him from plunging the world into darkness.
  • Dark Is Evil: An Evil Overlord who dresses in black robes and armor, wields dark magic drawn from the Abyss, and commands an army of demonic monsters spawned from that same darkness? Oh yeah. He qualifies.
  • Decapitated Army: Once he dies, his remaining monsters disintegrate en masse.
  • Evil Is Bigger: He towers over Satou and the other heroes, being about three meters tall according to an end-of-chapter Omake.
  • Evil Overlord: A demonic sorcerer who dwells in a blighted land far to the north of civilization, commands an army of demonic creatures, dresses like a Tin Tyrant, and poses a grave threat to the whole world.
  • Evil Sorcerer: He wields formidable dark magic.
  • Expy: If Tales of Wedding Rings is Lord of the Rings reimagined as an isekai harem series, then the Abyss King is its take on Sauron. Both are supernatural dark lords strongly associated with rings of power. Both were defeated in the past by a flawed hero who succumbed to the temptation of power and died soon afterward. The Abyss King's armored form even looks similar to how Sauron was depicted in the Peter Jackson films.
  • Humanoid Abomination: He has a roughly humanoid shape, but his unnatural height and resilience make it clear that whatever's underneath those robes and armor isn't human. The Elder isn’t being hyperbolic when she calls the Abyss King "darkness in human form".
  • Major Injury Underreaction: In his first encounter with Satou, the Abyss King gets a large chunk of the right side of his body blown off by a Sword Beam fueled by the full power of the rings. He barely reacts, much to Satou's horrified disbelief.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: This dark lord hides his face behind a veiled triangular mask emblazoned with a symbol resembling a solar eclipse.
  • Sigil Spam: His mask, and those of his Abyss Knight underlings, are emblazoned with his symbol: a black circle surrounded by a fiery corona, resembling an eclipsed sun or a black hole. The symbol is repeated all across his armor.
  • Summon Magic: With a mere gesture, he can open portals to the Abyss that spit out hordes of his monstrous minions.
  • Summon to Hand: He can summon the dark rings to himself from anywhere in the world, doing so once the party has felled the fourth Abyss Knight.

    The Knight of Fire

The second Abyss Knight to appear in the series. Originally one of the many suitors vying for Granart's hand, this man stumbled upon one of the Abyss King's dark rings and was possessed by it.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Like Smaragdi before him, he's a normal person enthralled by one of the Abyss King's dark rings. After Satou shatters his mask, the ring slips off his finger and he comes to his senses.
  • Call to Agriculture: After Granart handed him his ass, he decided to give up on wooing her and go be a farmer. Of course, then the dark ring appeared in his path...
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He's just some random guy who decided to take a crack at besting the princess of fire. Him finding the dark ring turned him into a massive threat that could have burned Needakitta to the ground.
  • Logical Weakness: Flames can be extinguished by a sufficiently strong wind, which is exactly how Satou defeats him: he uses the Ring of Wind to put out the Abyss Knight's fire, leaving him vulnerable.
  • No Name Given: We never learn his name.
  • No-Sell: The flames surrounding his body are hot enough to melt swords before they can hit him, making it almost impossible to attack him in melee.
  • Playing with Fire: The dark ring leaves him Wreathed in Flames and allows him to unleash fiery blasts from his hand.
  • The Resenter: He gets annoyed when he overhears the crowd cheering for Satou the Ring King, feeling that it's cheating to use a magic ring in a situation like this and that he could have easily bested Granart if he had a ring of his own. This resentment seemingly draws the dark ring to him.
  • Wreathed in Flames: The dark ring covers his body and sword with supernatural flames.

    The Fortune-teller

Click here to see her true form

A mysterious diviner who has wormed her way into the King of Maasa's confidence. She schemes with representatives of the Empire to weaken Maasa and turn it into an Imperial vassal state, though her true loyalties lie elsewhere.

She is the third Abyss Knight to appear in the series.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Was she always an Abyss Knight, or was she a normal person possessed by one of the dark rings like Smaragdi and the other Knights? The series sheds no light on this question.
  • Arc Villain: She is the main antagonist of volume 4.
  • Character Death: The Emperor guts her like a fish when she tries to manipulate him at the end of volume 4.
  • Expy: She's basically a female Grima Wormtongue, being a blatant Evil Chancellor and Treacherous Advisor whose poisonous advice has made a once-noble king degenerate into a decrepit dotard utterly dependent on her.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: She wears a hooded shawl that keeps the top half of her head hidden in deep shadow, with her eyes only occasionally visible.
  • Manipulative Bastard: She has the King of Maasa wrapped around her finger and tries to sink her claws into Marse too, preying on his insecurities and his sense of duty to convince him to kill Satou. She also gives him a cursed sword which puts him in the state of mind to act on those insecurities.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: While the Fortune-teller has magical powers, she never tries to fight the heroes herself. She relies on assassins and Abyss monsters to do her dirty work.
  • Phony Psychic: Zig-zagged. She does have legitimate magical abilities, but the ability to foresee the future isn't one of them. All her prophecies about monster attacks were just her summoning those monsters at the date and time that she said they'd appear.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Upon seeing Saphir transform into a gigantic dragon and devour her trump card in one bite, she wisely decides to get the hell out of dodge and vanishes into a watery portal.
  • You Have Failed Me: She magically offs the leader of her assassin squad after he reports their third failure to kill Satou.

    The Stranger
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/towr_light_princess_ak_tvt.png

A mysterious woman with an uncanny resemblance to the original Princess of Light. She approaches Hime while the latter is struggling to tap into her latent light magic and gives her some advice that leads to a breakthrough, though her intentions for Hime are less than benevolent.

  • Bad Samaritan: She helps Hime to unlock her light magic purely to gain her trust, so she can more easily corrupt the princess.
  • Break Them by Talking: In the final battle, she tries to break Hime's spirit by pulling her into a dark void and forcing her to watch the Abyss King demolish Satou, telling her that standing impotently on the sidelines is all that ring princesses like them can do. Hime is having none of it, however.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Her plan to corrupt Hime and get her to embrace the darkness worked perfectly, but she didn't expect that Hime would refuse to serve the Abyss King and instead shut herself up in a pocket dimension.
  • The Dragon: She's the Abyss King's most loyal subordinate.
  • Evil Counterpart: For all intents and purposes, she's a copy of the original Princess of Light created by the Abyss King to serve him. Subverted when it turns out that she is the original Princess of Light (or at least contains her soul). The other dark princesses are indeed just puppets, but she never could bear to leave her husband when he was hurting, and fell into villainy with him.
