Main Characters

    Arc Lalatoya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c1_7.png
Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno (Japanese), Brandon Johnson (English)

A man who was playing a video game and found that he was transported to a new world in the body of his player character.

  • 24-Hour Armor: Not exactly. While he has taken his helmet off a few times, Arc is forced to keep his body hidden from view to prevent people from freaking out.
  • Accidental Pervert: In the light novel, when he's examining Felfi Visrotte's dragon scales after climbing on her back, she reacts as if he's feeling her up. Ariane isn't amused.
  • Accidental Truth: Arc, when arriving in this new world with a skeleton avatar, came up with the cover-story that he is living with an unknown curse that gives him the appearance of a skeleton. When he reaches the elf village and gets magically examined, it turns out that he is indeed cursed, and even his most powerful anti-curse magic only gives fleeting relief.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the anime, he has full control over his summoned demon Ifrit, while in the novel he can only specify a target for it to kill and it can act however it wishes in doing so.
  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • A mild case. In the light novel, during a fight with some bandits, he punches a bandit's head clean off and punches through another bandit's head, and later kills Udolan by punching him in the back hard enough to break his spine (in the latter case, he was holding back his full strength). In the anime, the encounter with said bandits doesn't happen and Udolan survives, though he's still severely injured.
    • In the manga, Arc has more trouble with controlling Archangel Michael than in the novel, and collapses from exhaustion after using it to wipe out the undead army attacking the city of Saureah in the Nohzan Kingdom.
  • Ascended Fanboy: At the end of the day, Arc is basically beside himself that he's getting to go on his own bonafide real-life fantasy adventure with his MMO character.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Don't try to harm Arc's companions or you'll meet your demise.
    • Also, do not treat the lives of others like amusing cattle for you to do with as you please. Those who did found no mercy left for them. Special mention went to the slavers who were breeding beastmen females. In a solemn moment he asked Ariane to take care of Ponta, then rejoined Goemon to turn that entire facility into a tall, spiky mountain, effectively killing every last slaver.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Arc is generally a goofy, excitable nerd who's friendly and kind. That is, until one decides to threaten the lives of his companions or mistreat innocent people. Then you are in trouble.
    • For example, in episode 7, Yuriarna's treacherous guard grabs an angry Ponta and decides to kill her. Arc arrives, grabs the guard's arm.... and completely shatters it, causing him to scream in sheer agony before Arc simply shoves him away.
  • Back from the Dead: He resurrects Yuriarna and some of her companions in the second volume of the light novel.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Arc has a knack for arriving just in the nick of time when innocents are about to die, or worse.
  • Big Eater: He's a glutton for food and drink, despite being a skeleton. One of the first things he does upon entering a new city is to pig out on the local cuisine. Another is when he joins in with the crew of a Beastman ship in attacking a Kraken, with every one of them having the idea of cooking it up for dinner on their faces.
  • Bizarre Human Biology: Besides being a full body skeleton, he still has all of the functions of a normal human: he can breathe, drink, eat, taste and get hungry. The only real effect that his skeleton body has is suppressing his guilt. It later turns out that his uncursed form is that of an elf, not a human.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Whenever his emotions flare his left eye glows with a pure blue flame, showing righteous fury to the wicked and true loyalty to his companions. Hurting innocents or his friends is the easiest way to get him into this state, and the most fatal.
  • Character Catchphrase: He always begins by addressing the audience directly with "Hello there. It's me, Arc"note whenever he narrates.
  • Cigar Chomper: Implied to be this case in the Anime Opening, though due to the fact that Arc cannot get out of his armor lest he be mistaken for a monster, this isn't really shown in the series proper.
  • Comically Invincible Hero: He's so overpowered that few can damage him, starting the story stomping on bandits like he's playing hop-scotch, no-sells a massive log trap to the face, takes down a country killing basilisk single-handedly while escorting a little girl collecting medicinal herbs for her mother, and tells the mother they didn't face anything "dangerous" other than a wild boar. When a Kaiju is stampeding towards the imperial capital, he summons an even bigger and meaner kaiju of his own like it's nothing... while stating that he doesn't want to draw attention to himself. Against the few who can compete with him however, he's squarely in Unskilled, but Strong territory since experienced opponents - or even just opponents with large numbers - can out-pace/avoid his clumsy, inexperienced swings and get the upper hand.
  • Covert Pervert: In the light novel, he clearly notices Ariane's figure, and at one point is disappointed that he can't feel her against his back when they're riding together. She somehow picks up on this.
  • Dem Bones: Arc has the appearance of a skeleton underneath his armor. When his curse is temporarily dispelled by the water from the spring in the Lord Crown, his resulting appearance is that of the dark elf avatar he had before switching to his skeleton avatar in the game.
  • Destructive Savior: In the novel, the fight between Ifrit and Fumba's hydra causes a lot of damage to the town of Leibnizche.
  • Dork Knight: While he acts like a tough and traditionally heroic knight, Arc really is just a giant nerd geeking out over getting to see a real fantasy world.
  • Emotion Suppression: Due to being a skeleton, Arc doesn't feel anything when killing people. When the water from the spring in the Lord Crown temporarily dispels his curse for the first time, a month's worth of suppressed emotions overwhelms him and causes him to pass out for a while. This might solely be focused on his guilt though, as he quite evidently does experience other emotions like joy, sorrow, fear, and rage.
    • Upon learning that the pontiff of the Holy Hilk Kingdom is also a skeleton, Arc realizes that the pontiff should react the same way to the Lord Crown water. This becomes essential in defeating the pontiff, as being doused with the water outright kills him due to his emotions being suppressed for hundreds of years.
  • Evil Laugh: The opening even ends with him doing one of these.
  • Face of a Thug: Or rather it's the lack of a face (or any flesh for that matter) that makes him terrifying to those who see his true visage, not to mention the fact that he towers over nearly everyone in a hulking suit of armor. Underneath all of that, he's a colossal dork and a Nice Guy.
  • Flashback Nightmare: In the light novel, while recovering from the effects of the Lord Crown water, he experiences a vision of an unknown skeletal mage massacring an army of soldiers that attacked it. Arc doesn't remember the vision when he wakes up, and said skeletal mage is later revealed to be the pontiff of the Holy Hilk Kingdom.
  • Friendly Skeleton: BOY is he ever! He's as selfless and heroic as they come.
  • Genius Bruiser: This guy can use the knowledge of the chemical composition of Soy Sauce to make a 'psudo Soy Sauce' with local ingredients.
  • Gentle Giant: The body of a massive Tin Tyrant... with the mind of a dorky Nice Guy. But only to bystanders and his friends; to his enemies, he's exactly what his appearance suggests.
  • Godlike Gamer: As per the norm with a light novel in the isekai genre, Arc was an exceptional gamer who had leveled up his gamer avatar to maximum. Though there have been a few that can match or beat him in fair combat.
  • Good Wears White: He wears white and gold armor.
  • Humble Hero: He tries to keep a low profile, but with his imposing visage and broken skillset it's easier said than done. Even while taking menial guild quests, he often ruins the political machinations of kingdoms and changes the course of history by sheer accident.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: He makes a point of looting his enemies. He even went and looted the mansion of Marquis Tryton, who was illegally enslaving elves in violation of an international treaty, while Ariane was beating the stuffing out of Tryton and rescuing her kin from sexual slavery. When he's called to task for it, he cleverly states that he stole the guy's loot, not for his own greed, but purely to hurt the guy and to make further slave hunts that much harder, since the corrupt guy will have a harder time hiring mercenaries and other such scoundrels to do his dirty work. It also deals a great blow to Prince Dakares' bid for the throne of the Rhoden Kingdom, as he's lost his biggest financial backer.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: While Arc needs to literally wear it almost 24/7 to hide his true skeletal appearance, he also figuratively embodies the trope with his selfless heroism.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He can sneak up on bandits despite wearing some really heavy armor. The fact that he can teleport helps.
  • Microtransactions: There were a lot of different race skin one could choose for free, but the Full Body Skeleton was a DLC skin. His friends made fun of him for wasting money on it since he always wore full body armor.
  • No Kill like Overkill: Justified. He has mentioned several times that his attacks feel a lot stronger than he remembers, or wonders if they are just more powerful in this world. Given he has had to face a Hydra (which could destroy a town) and a Giant Sandworm (which would normally take a large group to beat), and an undead force of 100,000, it's been necessary.
  • No Sense of Direction: In the light novel, he has a hard time finding his way around. Ariane loves to tease him about it.
  • Oblivious to Love: He's clueless about Ariane's feelings for him.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He goes by his skeleton avatar's name, Arc, but he never mentions his name from his previous life.
  • Our Elves Are Different: Played with. His true form when temporarily uncursed is that of a dark-skinned elf in contrast to Ariane's pale complexion.
  • Oxymoronic Being: He has the appearance of an undead skeleton, but his Main Class is Paladin with a Sub Class of Priest.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has crimson eyes in his elven form.
  • Prestige Class: His holy knight class was this in the game, where he went through a long chain of classes to unlock it. Here however he is not restricted and can use magic from classes he previously had that the Holy Knight shouldn't have access to.
  • Spanner in the Works: He seems to keep messing up evil plans by just happening to be in the right place at the right time.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: He was an otaku gamer who one day fell asleep and woke up in the body of his online game avatar, which has the appearance of a Knight in Shining Armor on the surface and a skeleton underneath. He is substantially more powerful than other characters with endless grinding having pushed his level to a maximum of 255, which grants him Super-Strength and an assortment of mystical powers. While he doesn't quite have a harem yet, he does encounter and help out a lot of girls on his adventures, so he's getting there. Played With, as he's got a genuine goofy personality, finds his OP status doesn't always do the job, and often has to rely on his allies when he's uncertain how to approach a situation.
  • Super-Strength: He was this even in game, being a warrior class who hit the level cap. Naturally, things like heavy metal hatches, iron bars and bandit heads stand no chance against him.
  • Teleport Spam: To the point of being a Running Gag. He frequently uses the Dimension Move spell to get around, which enables him to pull-off Ninja-esque feats despite being essentially a walking tank.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: When Fumba tells Arc most of the captured elves were used by the Holy Revlon Empire as test subjects, and the rest he'd fed to his beasts, Arc replies: "Since I've first arrived, I've seen my fair share of scum and villany. But despite it all, I've always been able to remain calm. Until I Met You. YOU'VE AWAKENED MY RAGE!"
  • Trapped in Another World: Trapped in the world of the game that he played in the body of his game avatar.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: He is indeed powerful and is intimately familiar with his skills, magics, and attacks, but since his experience is from a third-person perspective, not a first-hand experience with his own body, he tends to telegraph his moves. Ariane's mother calls him out on this as she's whaling on him in a friendly sparring session, and Arc himself muses about this when Ariane effortlessly deals with several haunted wolves by herself (whereas he only landed a hit on the pack leader, and had trouble with the underlings' illusions).
"I have all these battle skills and magic, but until I learn how to use them, they're wasted on me."
  • Weather Manipulation: His Lightning Damper spell summons a whole thunderstorm in the process.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Arc is afraid of bugs.

    Ponta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c4_3.png
Voiced by: Nene Hieda (Japanese), Emi Lo (English)

A fox spirit that came to become Arc's pet.

  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: In the light novel and manga, she's being kept in a cage when she's first introduced, to be used as bait by bandits to capture elves. This isn't the case in the anime.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the anime, Arc first meets Ponta while helping Marca in the second episode, whereas she's introduced much later in the first volume of the light novel.
  • Blow You Away: She can use wind magic. This turns out to be instrumental in defeating the pontiff of the Holy Hilk Kingdom.
  • Empathy Pet: She frequently poses in a way that mirrors what Arc is doing or thinking.
  • Head Pet: Likes to perch on top of Arc's helmet.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: She's almost always with Arc, and her mere presence with him serves to illustrate to numerous others that this is no ordinary man (nor someone who can have malicious motives, given spirits' cautious natures and ability to sense such feelings).
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Even Ariane can't help but have a cuddle session with her while Arc's not looking.

    Ariane Glenys Maple
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c2_6.png
Voiced by: Fairouz Ai (Japanese), Caitlin Glass (English)

A dark elf warrior who becomes Arc's partner.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Arc first meets her in the first episode of the anime, much earlier than in the light novel.
  • Blow You Away: In the light novel, she can use wind magic.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: It takes just one glass of booze (two in the anime and manga) to get her sloshed.
  • The Chief's Daughter: Her father is the chief of the elven village of Lalatoya.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Ariane exhibits this whenever Arc is close to another woman.
  • Composite Character: In the anime, she gets some of Danka's characteristics, such as his initial distrust of Arc, and attacking him after he loots some bandits.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She usually puts up the appearance of a mature, hardened warrior princess... but even the mere sight of Ponta causes all that to melt away as she can't help but find her cute and want to pet her so badly.
  • Death Glare: She tends to give these to Arc whenever he screws up or is close to another woman.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: In the light novel, she can use earth magic.
  • Expressive Ears: Her ears wiggle when she's really happy.
  • Fantastic Racism: Was originally mistrustful towards humans due to them kidnapping her people and selling them into slavery (thus breaking the treaty) and having been around very unsavory ones in general. Arc helping her on her quest to free the other elves causes her to learn that not every human is bad. The fact that Arc is currently an undead skeleton helps curb this.
  • Forgot the Disability: She has a habit of attacking Arc whenever she sees him in a state of undress. By the time she remembers that he is the same heroic knight that she has been traveling with and has an undead curse placed upon him, it's too late!
  • It's Personal: When she's bearing down on the Empire's murderous beast-handler, who fed countless elven slaves, alive, to his monster army, she makes a point of ensuring he suffers as much as possible before he dies, horribly.
  • Kill It with Fire: She's fond of doing this to her enemies. Just ask Fumba and Cardinals Palurumo and Marcos.
  • Luminescent Blush: Her reaction when her feelings for Arc are brought up.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: She is so engrossed in fluffing Ponta she didn't realize Arc already returned. She gives this expression while trying to Change the Uncomfortable Subject.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After Arc regains his uncursed form for the first time and passes out, she becomes extremely worried about him.
  • Our Dark Elves Are Different: Is a Dark Elf but lacks the dark complexion and the usual villainous allignment typically seen in fantasy fiction. Instead, Dark Elves in this story are marked by being more martial in nature than Light Elves.
  • Playing with Fire: She has elemental fire powers to go with her often fierce and fiery temper.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She is the daughter of the dark elf queen and goes adventuring to solve her people's problems, personally.
  • Ship Tease: In the light novel, she's implied to have feelings for Arc at multiple points. As of volume 9, it hasn't gone anywhere.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The light novels implied that she starts to have feelings for Arc, especially since he isn't like other humans.
  • Theory Tunnel Vision: In the anime, when she mistakes Arc as a bandit even though he points out that he looks nothing like one. She just thinks how far a knight must have fallen to become a bandit. When taking her Fantastic Racism of humans into consideration, it makes sense for the short-sightedness. The fact that Arc had just killed a band of brigands and been carrying lots of gold and treasure looted from them didn't help either.
  • Tsundere: She loves to berate Arc, but she clearly has feelings for him and gets jealous when other women are close to him.

    Chiyome
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c3_75.png
Voiced by: Miyu Tomita (Japanese), Sarah Wiedenheft (English)

A ninja who accompanies Arc and Ariane.

  • A-Cup Angst: She's a bit self-conscious about her small bust size.
  • Fighting Your Friend: She is forced to fight a member of her clan, who was raised as an undead by the Holy Hilk Kingdom and who she considered to be her brother, to the death.
  • An Ice Person: When she's really angry, such as when Niena confronts her about Sasuke infiltrating the Nohzan Kingdom's vault while she's grieving over his death, she summons ice around herself.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She's a beast folk with cat ears.
  • Making a Splash: As one of the Six Ninja, this is her designated power.
  • Ninja: She looks like a stereotypical ninja.
  • You Killed My Father: She joined the Jinshin clan partly out of a desire for revenge against humans for killing her parents, who had been enslaved by them, and partly out of regret for being unable to save her mother, who gave up her life to protect her daughter.

Supporting Characters

    Danka Niel Maple
Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi (Japanese), David Matranga (English)
A severe-looking elf from the same village as Ariane, as well as one of its strongest warriors.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Danka initially starts off distrusting Arc when they meet, thinking him to just be in this for money. However as they progress through rescuing the captive Elves and Arc displays his unique skills and resourcefulness on top of his earnest and outgoing attitude and lack of the usual brand of racism Elves are inflicted with, Danka quickly starts to warm up to the knight.
  • Face of a Thug: Has very harsh facial features, but he cares for his fellow elves, and even slowly trusts Arc despite his misgivings towards humans.
  • Fantastic Racism: He greatly distrusts humans, seeing how they continue to kidnap elves (including children) despite signing a treaty with them.

    Goemon
Voiced by: Ryota Takeuchi (Japanese)
A fellow beastman ninja and companion of Chiyome.

    Carcy Held
An elven researcher who studies monsters and lives among humans.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: He believes that the time where elves and humans can live together will happen one day.

    Eevin Glenys Maple

Ariane's older sister, a legendary warrior for the Maple capital.
  • Ascended Extra: She plays a greater role in the manga than in the light novel.
  • Blood Knight: Ariane describes her as a "battle maniac".
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite her reputation for being the strongest and fiercest warrior among the elves, her actual personality is that of a carefree and bubbly woman who's often a tad too affectionate toward her younger sister.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She doesn't like how close Ariane is to Arc.
  • Cool Big Sis: She's very doting towards Ariane.
  • World's Strongest Man: Considered to be the most powerful elf warrior among her people.

Lalatoya

A village within the Great Canada Forest, where Ariane and her family reside.

    Dillan Tahg Lalatoya
Voiced by: Kosuke Toriumi (Japanese), Matthew David Rudd (English)
The elder of the village and Ariane and Eevin's father.

    Glenys Alna Lalatoya
Voiced by: Yuko Minaguchi (Japanese), Katelyn Barr (English)
Dillan's wife and Ariane and Eevin's mother, who is a master swordswoman.
  • Always Someone Better: In their sparring session, she's too fast and unpredictable for Arc. Even his Dimension Move doesn't surprise her long enough for an opening.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite seeming to be a sweet and demure housewife, she's actually a much more capable fighter than she initially appears. Arc finds this out when she has a practice match with him.
  • Master Swordsman: She trained Eevin and Ariane in the ways of the sword, and proved to be much more skilled than Arc despite his high power.
  • Really 17 Years Old: Played for Laughs. She claims she's "only" 170 years old. Ariane quickly points out she's actually 245.

Calcut Mountains

A mountain range located close to the Great Canada Forest, where the mountain people hide from persecution.

    Sasuke
A beastman who served as Chiyome's mentor when she first joined the Jinshin clan's village.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards Chiyome, though they're not directly related. As an undead, he doesn't put his full effort into fighting her because of this.
  • Blow You Away: His designated power as one of the Six Ninja.
  • Dead All Along: By the time he first appears on-page, he's been raised as an undead by the Holy Hilk Kingdom.
  • Dying as Yourself: As he's about to die (again), he regains his former personality, and warns Chiyome about the Holy Hilk Kingdom.
  • Fighting Your Friend: As an undead, he fights Chiyome and Goemon, who were his friends when he was alive.
  • Little Bit Beastly: He's a beastman.
  • Posthumous Character: He's eventually revealed to be an undead, with his personality when he was alive being shown through flashbacks.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: As an undead, he has glowing red eyes.
  • Walking Spoiler: As shown above, knowing about him and his fate spoils much of the light novels from volume 4 onward.

Rhoden Kingdom

Olav

The capital city of the Rhoden Kingdom.

    Sekt Rondahl Karlon Rhoden Sahdiay
Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi (Japanese), Grant Paulsen (English)
The first prince of the Kingdom.
  • Cain and Abel: He initially plots to kill Yuriarna (and it would have been successful had Arc not resurrected her). He then finds out that Dakares is also plotting to kill him, so he has Dakares killed first.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When his sister turns up alive and having established a reliable trade with the elves and secured the hearts of the people, he gives up trying to claim the throne for this generation, citing that "Everything is for the sake of this country".
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The in-between. He is a Well-Intentioned Extremist who is willing to kill his siblings because he feels that they would not serve the country as well as he could. He is at least humble enough to know he lost and accepts that Yuriarna will be a great queen.
  • Slasher Smile: He has a tendency to make unnerving grins.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His reason for trying to kill his siblings and claim the throne was because he thought he was the one who could benefit his country the most. When Yuriarna proves to have not only survived her assassination attempt, but also managed to secure a trade deal, he immediately ended his plans for the current generation, watching as the country's well-being would be secure.

    Dakares Ciciay Karlon Rhoden Vetran
Voiced by: Daiki Hamano (Japanese), Bradley Gareth (English)
The second prince of the Kingdom.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In the anime, there's no indication given that he's planning to kill Sekt before he dies.
  • Cain and Abel: In the light novel, he plans to have Yuriarna and Sekt killed, but Sekt outwits and kills him instead.
  • Fatal Flaw: Greed and Pride. His motivation is to have his siblings killed and take the throne. He ultimately cares for no one but himself, and his death was a result of underestimating his brother.
  • Framing the Guilty Party: On the receiving end of this. After his death, he's framed by Sekt for the murder of Yuriarna, which he was already plotting to commit.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Of the first volume of the light novel. He ordered Marquis Tryton to cause turmoil in Luvierte, leading to the bandit attack on Lauren and the two basilisks' rampage in the area.
  • It's All About Me: He wants to be king by any means, believing he deserves it by default.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The mean. He is completely full of himself, willing to break international treaties and kill his own family just so he can take the throne. He cares for no one but himself, and endangers his own country for his ambitions.

    Yuriarna Merol Melissa Rhoden Olav
Voiced by: Saori Onishi (Japanese), Danielle Yoshiko Phillips (English)
The second princess of the Kingdom.

Luvierte

    Lauren Laraiya du Luvierte
Voiced by: Rin Kusumi (Japanese), Krystal LaPorte (English)
A 16-year-old girl who is the eldest daughter of the Luvierte family.
  • Attempted Rape: She and Rita were nearly raped by bandits at the beginning of the story. Fortunately, Arc intervened before this could happen.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: She is shown to have wet herself in terror during the aforementioned Attempted Rape.
  • The Bus Came Back: She initially appears only in the first volume of the light novel, but briefly meets Arc again in the ninth volume.
  • Got Over Rape Instantly: In "The Wandering Knight Sets Out to Make the World a Better Place", the opening scene begins with a graphic sexual assault against Rita and Lauren that is thwarted by the skeleton knight. Within minutes, both assault victims are smiling and blushing at the hero and Lauren indicates a desire to marry him.
  • Rescue Romance: She's implied to have developed feelings for Arc after he saved her from the bandits.

    Rita Farren
Lauren's chambermaid.
  • Attempted Rape: She and Lauren were nearly raped by bandits at the beginning of the story. Fortunately, Arc intervened before this could happen.
  • Got Over Rape Instantly: In "The Wandering Knight Sets Out to Make the World a Better Place", the opening scene begins with a graphic sexual assault against Rita and Lauren that is thwarted by the skeleton knight. Within minutes, both assault victims are smiling and blushing at the hero. This is an Adaptation Deviation from the original Light Novel, where Rita just appears grateful.
  • Oblivious to Love: She's apparently unaware of Giovanni's feelings for her, only seeing him as one of the best swordsmen in town and believing his talents are wasted on her.

    Buckle du Luvierte
Lauren's father and the ruler of Luvierte.
  • Adapted Out: He doesn't appear in the anime.
  • Papa Wolf: Upon learning that Lauren was attacked by bandits, he becomes extremely angry and orders an interrogation of the family of the guard who betrayed her to the bandits. He's grateful to Arc for intervening, but also incorrectly suspects that he's working for Dakares due to appearing at the right time.

Diento

    Tryton du Diento
The marquis of the town of Diento.
  • Age Lift: He's much younger in the anime than in the light novel, where he's described as having white hair.
  • Attempted Rape: He's about to rape two elven women when Arc and Ariane show up at his castle.
  • Fat Bastard: He's fat and a nasty piece of work, selling elves into slavery and being behind the bandit attack on Lauren at the beginning of the story, as well as releasing two basilisks near Luvierte.
  • Groin Attack: On the receiving end of this from Ariane. Repeatedly.
  • Karmic Death: He's beaten to death by the two women he was about to rape.
  • Starter Villain: He's the main villain of the first volume of the light novel.
  • Undignified Death: Caught in nothing but his underwear, kicked in the balls over and over, tied-up on the floor, then left at the (lack of) mercy of his would-be victims.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He only appears in a couple of scenes before he's killed.

    Udolan
Tryton's son.
  • Dirty Coward: He threatens to hurt the elven children he's selling into slavery to force Ariane to surrender.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Upon seeing Arc and Ariane again, he tried to sneak out of the castle to avoid having to deal with them. Unfortunately for him, Arc does not let him get too far.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the light novel, Arc kills him by punching him in the back hard enough to break his spine. In the anime, he shows up again at the Diento castle after his encounter with Arc and Ariane.
  • Tears of Fear: In the anime, he cries in terror after encountering Arc for a second time, before fainting.
  • Very Punchable Man: In the anime. Both times he appears, Arc knocks him out.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He's an overgrown bully who really gets off on torturing the elf children he held captive, something that even unnerves one of the bandits who work for him.

Holy East Revlon Empire

    Domitianus Revlon Valtiafelbe
Voiced by: Akira Ishida (Japanese), Bradley Gareth (English)
The emperor of the Holy East Revlon Empire.
  • Evil Redhead: He has red hair and is totally ruthless.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He backed Prince Dakares in his bid for the throne of Rhoden, to get his support with conquering the Great West Revlon Empire.
  • Manipulative Bastard: After he learns that the Holy Hilk Kingdom has been defeated by Arc and his allies, he plans to purge the corrupt Hilk officials in the Empire, in order to unite the true believers of the Hilk religion under his banner and create a church that is more receptive to his words.

    Fumba Soodu Rozombanya
Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (Japanese), Ian Sinclair (English)
A beast tamer working for the Empire.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the manga and anime, his imp is able to brainwash Ariane into attacking Arc, while it was only able to briefly bewitch her in the light novel.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: In the light novel, he encounters Arc and Ariane while drunk and tries to grope Ariane, leading to Arc knocking him out. This encounter is left out of the anime and manga.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • The manga and anime show him feeding two women he just had fun with moments before, to some monsters he trains for the Empire, while the light novel doesn't (though he does threaten to do so if they give away any secrets).
    • In the anime, he attempts to sic his hydra onto the nearby town to prove his strength, which he doesn't do in the novel.
  • Adaptational Wimp: In the light novel, his hydra puts up a good fight against Ifrit before it's killed, to the point of wrecking several buildings in the town of Leibnizche. In the anime, it's defeated by Arc and Ifrit fairly quickly without causing any damage.
  • Adaptation Expansion: He gets a detailed backstory in the anime.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: In the light novel, Emperor Domitianus sums him up as a drunk and a womanizer. In the anime, he's much more ambitious.
  • The Beastmaster: He has the ability to control monsters.
  • Boisterous Weakling: Despite his constant boasting and obsession with strength, he is pathetically weak. The only reason he is a threat is because of his ability to control monsters, and even then his entire strategy relies completely on them rather than his own strength. Once Ariane figures out all his tricks and Chiyome destroys his Power Tattoo, Ariane kills him in seconds.
  • Death by Irony: His favorite murder method is Fed to the Beast. He himself is "eaten" away by Ariane's flames.
  • Dirty Coward: The moment he realizes he's toast aganist Ariane, he tries to get her to spare him by claiming he was just doing what the Empire told him and offered to apologize for his part in killing elves. It doesn't work.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: In the novel, he notes that he doesn't discriminate against non-humans, unlike the rest of the Empire.
  • Evil Laugh: Kazuya Nakai gives him a deranged high-pitched cackle.
  • Fed to the Beast: He's very fond of feeding people to the monsters he controls.
  • Kill It with Fire: He's burned to death by Ariane.
  • A Lady on Each Arm: He's introduced with a woman under each arm.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: While he lacks physical strength, his abilities allow him to casually control city or country destroying monsters, but that’s literally all he has going for him. Aside from the occasional cheap shot, his only strategy is to just throw monsters at a problem until it goes away. His village elders and Ariane label him as weak because of this.
  • Villainous Crush: He expresses an interest in sleeping with Ariane. She doesn't return the feeling.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The Emperor was planning on having him killed after they fully understood his beast tamer sorcery. Ariane beats him to it when he can't stop the Hydra.

Great West Revlon Empire

    Gaulba Revlon Selziofebs
The emperor of the Great West Revlon Empire.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He backed Prince Sekt in his bid for the throne of Rhoden, to get his support with conquering the Holy East Revlon Empire.
  • Properly Paranoid: He has a low opinion of the Hilk religion, with good reason.

    Salwis du Ohst
The steward of the royal palace.
  • Chick Magnet: He's noted to be popular among women, due to his good looks.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He truly believes in the Hilk religion, and trusts Hilk deacon Liz (aka Cardinal Elin Luxuria Castitas) enough to confide key information about the Empire's situation to her.

Holy Hilk Kingdom

    In General
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing:The cardinals appear to be ordinary human beings that care about their worshippers, but they're actually undead, and they look down on humans; they're even worse towards elves and beastmen.
  • Co-Dragons: The cardinals serve in this role to the pontiff.
  • Evil Smells Bad: The cardinals and their soldiers are undead, so they give off a stench that mountain people can sense.
  • Fantastic Racism: The Hilk religion preaches that humans are the most superior of the races, and actively discriminates against non-humans. This is revealed to be because elves and mountain people can innately sense that the cardinals are undead.
  • Human Resources: The kingdom uses slaves and criminals purchased en masse to create new undead.
  • The Necrocracy: The pontiff and his cardinals are eventually revealed to be undead.
  • One-Winged Angel: All seven cardinals' true forms behind their human guise is that of a large monster.
  • Theme Naming: The cardinals' names include their respective Latin representation of both the Seven Deadly Sins AND their opposite among the Seven Heavenly Virtues:
    • Acedia = sloth, Industria = diligence
    • Avaritia = greed, Liberalitas = generosity (charity by another name)
    • Gula = gluttony, Temperantia = temperance
    • Ira = wrath, Patientia = patience
    • Luxuria = lust, Castitas = chastity
    • Invidia = envy, Humanitas = kindness
    • Superbia = pride, Humilitas = humility
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: The cardinals appear to be ordinary human beings. Their true forms are that of undead monstrosities.

    Pontiff Thanatos Sylvius Hilk
The founder and leader of the Holy Hilk Kingdom.
  • Big Bad: Due to being the founder of the Holy Hilk Kingdom and the Hilk religion, he's ultimately responsible for much of the persecution that non-human beings have faced from humans, as well as much of the conflict that happens throughout the series.
  • Dem Bones: He's eventually revealed to be a skeleton like Arc.
  • Emotion Suppression: It's eventually revealed that he doesn't feel much emotion due to being a skeleton like Arc. Arc realizes this and douses him with water from the Lord Crown, causing several years' worth of emotions to overwhelm and kill him.
  • Evil Counterpart: He's very similar to Arc in terms of power, appearance and backstory. When he dies from the effect of the Lord Crown water, Arc worries that he could end up like the pontiff if he isn't careful.
  • The Faceless: In his first few appearances, his face is covered by his miter. He's eventually revealed to be a skeleton underneath his robes.
  • Lack of Empathy: He has no qualms about killing thousands of people and raising their corpses for his own uses. Subverted when he's hit by water from the Lord Crown, which causes the years of suppressed emotions to kill him due to the trauma.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: He's named after the Greek god of death.
  • Rapid Aging: While he initially appears as a black-haired man when hit with the Lord Crown water, the several years' worth of suppressed emotions that return when the curse is dispelled cause him to age rapidly and then crumble into dust.

    Charros Acedia Industria
  • Fate Worse than Death: Inflicts this on his victims. Humans consumed by him become one of the many mouths on his body, who constantly wish for death.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: His true form is described by Arc as being like a scorpion with the face of a caterpillar.
  • Non-Indicative Name: He has "Acedia" (Latin for sloth) in his name, but his overall behavior is more reminiscent of Gluttony.
  • No-Respect Guy: The Pope and Palurumo don't think much of him, but Arc feels that he was a strong opponent.
  • Villainous Glutton: A fat priest that snacks a lot, and also on people.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He gets killed off in the same volume he's introduced in.

    Palurumo Avaritia Liberalitas
  • Adaptational Badass: In the manga, he has the ability to devour magic when a spell is cast.
  • Kill It with Fire: He gets burned to death by Ariane.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Arc describes his true form as resembling a squirrel monkey whose face is a cross between a monkey and an owl.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In his true form, he has bloodshot eyes that resemble red goggles.
  • Smug Snake: He callously dismisses Charros as the weakest of the Seven Cardinals, but is enraged when Arc comments he felt that Charros was stronger than him. And considering that Palurumo was beat with weaker abilities when Arc was tired (and needed Ariane and Chiyome), whereas Arc went all out against Charros by himself, this opinion is validated.

    Tismo Ghoula Temprantia
  • Big Eater: In his first scene, he's eating heavily. In his true form, he even resembles a Venus flytrap.
  • Enfant Terrible: He looks like a young boy.
  • Killed Offscreen: His death at the hands of Ariane and Chiyome isn't described.

    Marcos Invidia Humanitas
  • Cyclops: In his true form, his head has one massive eye, with a bunch of smaller eyes surrounding it.
  • Kill It with Fire: He gets burned to death by Ariane.

    Augrent Iyla Patientia

    Baltord Spelvia Humilitas
  • Ascended Extra: He gets much more screen time in the manga than in the light novel.
  • Death by Adaptation: Subverted. In the manga, he's initially incinerated by Arc's Archangel Michael summon, but he's later shown regenerating in the Holy Hilk Kingdom. In the light novel, he and Arc haven't even encountered each other.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In the manga, his desire for 'quality materials' for his master was his undoing, absorbing too much from both the Tree Lord and Dragon Lord, being unable to contain it, and then trying to reach for "Archangel Michael", leading to his incineration.
  • Put on a Bus: He's on an unspecified mission at the Runeology Cluster in the Holy Revlon Empire in the fifth volume of the light novel. As a result, he and Elin are the only remaining cardinals after the defeat of the Holy Hilk Kingdom.

    Elin Luxuria Castitas
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: In the manga, she kills her victims by draining their life using her tongue, while in the light novel she did this by having sex.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Her eyes turn black when she's about to kill a victim.
  • Compelling Voice: Almost everything she does can compel men to do her bidding.
  • Honey Trap: She seduces Salwis in order to infiltrate the Great West Revlon Empire.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She wears outfits that show off her figure. Justified, as she represents Lust.
  • Naughty Nuns: She dresses provocatively despite being a cardinal.
  • Out with a Bang: She kills and feeds on her victims by having sex with them.
  • Undying Loyalty: Subverted. While she's grateful to Thanatos for creating her, she decides to lie low after he and most of her fellow cardinals are killed.
