    Sasha/Athena

Sasha/Athena

Voiced by: Aya Hirano (JP), Reba Buhr (EN)

  • Action Girl: Once she dons the fabled Athena Cloth.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: She was taken to the Sanctuary at around 8-10 years old and had been maturing herself up for the role of Athena ever since.
  • Barrier Maiden: She surrounded the Sanctuary with a barrier to prevent Hades from resurrecting his Specters within its territory, until Asmita created the MacGuffin capable of sealing the Specters.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Sasha is a Foil to Saori in some ways:
    • While Saori leaned more on her Goddess side the longer the series went, Sasha staunchly leans more on her human side. Also, Sasha is considerably less plagued with doubt than Saori.
    • Their backstories also parallel each other: Saori was born in the Sanctuary, but lived her childhood in a wealthy manor without knowing her divine heritage because the Sagittarius Saint saved her from an assassination attempt by the fake Pope, whereas Sasha was born in a poor orphanage, but was taken to the Sanctuary by a Sagittarius Saint for protection.
  • Cooldown Hug: On Sisyphus and Bennu.
  • Damsel in Distress: Subverted. Contrary to Saori, Sasha is a more direct and pragmatic fighter and less of a bleeding heart.
  • Damsel out of Distress: Downplayed. In the only time during the series when she is kidnapped (after losing her powers during the Important Haircut scene), Athena's cosmos returns just in time (because Rhadamanthys unsealed her powers by destroying the Lost canvas) for Sasha to save herself.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: As a little girl, Sasha had a very short bob. As a teenager, it's much longer; ironically, she indirectly loses her powers in battle because she cuts her hair to pay for Charon's fare.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: Good wings, when donning her Cloth.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Alongside Tenma and Alone, to banish Hades back into the Underworld and keep him trapped there.
  • Important Haircut: Sasha cut her hair as a payment for Charon's fare, temporarily removing her powers.
  • It's Personal: She fight Hades less because of what he's bringing to the world, and more because he took control of her dear brother.
  • Lady of War: She is the goddess of war, after all.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: To her brother Alone. She used to have a tomboyish bob cut while he was a bit too long-haired and pretty for his own good, and she also protected her brother from the bullies when they were young... but usually Tenma would handle them all.
  • Nice Girl: A very sweet and kind person.

    Pope Sage

Pope Sage

Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (JP), Cam Clarke (EN)

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Gave his life so he could seal Thanatos' soul.
  • My Greatest Failure: Manigoldo, not only dying before him, but doing so in order to give him an opening in defeating Thanatos.
  • Old Master: To Manigoldo.
  • Retired Badass: Before becoming Pope, Sage was the previous Gold Saint of Cancer and one of the few survivors of the previosu holy war.
  • Survivor Guilt: Being one of the survivors of the previous Holy War.

    Pegasus Tenma

Pegasus Tenma

Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara (JP), Arnie Pantoja (EN)

  • Attack Animal: Youma sees him as this, and intends to harvest his soul to use it as a weapon against Olympus.
  • Back from the Dead: When Alone killed him in the first battle of the Holy War; thanks to Athena's divine protection in the flower garland, his soul was kept alive and subsequently rescued by Yato and Yuzuriha from Yomotsu Hirasaka.
  • Break the Cutie: Not very rare. Learning that the place where he grew up was ravaged by Specters and that his childhood friend is behind it all. Aldebaran's death, while he was unconscious. Dohko's apparent death, and the fact that he blames himself (and Degel doesn't help by agreeing that it's his fault). Yato and Yuzuriha turning into stone. Finding himself face to face with his beloved mother, who came back as a Specter.
  • The Chosen One: According to legends, the Pegasus Saint is always a key character in the Holy Wars against Hades, so everyone seems to think Tenma is some kind of chosen one and must make it through the war and face Hades. Tenma initially seems to think this means he's Blessed with Suck.
  • Determinator: He is a Pegasus Saint after all.
  • Disappeared Dad: Until he resurfaced as a major villain.
  • Divine Parentage: Son of a rogue Time God.
  • Enemy Mine: He ends up fighting Partita alongside Pandora (although she claims he will be the next one to die). After he saves her life and protects her, they become almost friendly towards each other. Still enemies, though.
  • The Hero: Tenma is the one of the main character and is determined to protect Sasha and save Alone.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Alongside Sasha and Alone, to banish Hades back into the Underworld and keep him trapped there.

    Unicorn Yato

Unicorn Yato

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Yato_9703.png
Voiced by: Atsushi Abe (JP), Kyle McCarley (EN)

  • Catchphrase: "The great Yato..."
  • Determinator: Even though he knows his own limitations, he won't give up until the very end.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Before turning into stone, he spends his last seconds preventing Tenma from falling into the same trap.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: In chapter 216, when Tenma is convinced by the Lost Canvas that death is salvation and falls into an Angst Coma thinking that all his efforts to help them live are futile, Yato jumps in front of him - even when Hades is there - to help Tenma snap out of it.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: As a kid, when he used to dream of being a "hero".
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Every little bit. Had he not been there for Tenma, Hades would not have been defeated.
  • Jumped at the Call: When his older sister falls ill and he tries to take her to town to see a medic, they're attack by a Specter, and kid Yato tries to fight him despite being a child with zero experience! Big Damn Hero Scorpio Kardia shows up to save the day and (after the older sister is cured) takes Yato with him to the Sanctuary to become a Saint, something the young boy seems very eager about.
  • The Lancer: He's basically Tenma's right hand.
  • Ship Tease: Have a decent amount of this with Yuzuriha. By the end of the manga, both are depowered and sent to Jamir, where they're learning how to live as normal humans together, and gaidens shows they were still together. It's implied that Kiki, Mu's apprentice, is their descendant.
  • Signature Move: Unicorn Gallop.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Downplayed. He is much more heroic than Unicorn Jabu and is a main character.
  • Taken for Granite: Is turned into stone alongside most of Athena's army. Reverted by Athena.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: With Tenma and Yuzuriha.
  • Tsundere: A type A towards, surprisingly, Tenma. They are at first rivals, and Yato only agrees to help bring back Tenma from the Underworld because he thinks Athena/Sasha will be devastated if Tenma dies. However, he shows genuine concern for Tenma and really puts a lot of effort into helping him, and as the series progresses, they become friendlier and friendlier, enough for Yato to pull a Heroic Sacrifice for Tenma despite still bickering with him on a daily basis. As in the later parts of the series, Yato now seems to be the type B instead.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Tenma, and Yuzuriha to a lesser extent.

    Minor Bronze Saints

Silver Saints

    Crane Yuzuriha

Crane Yuzuriha

Voiced by: Sanae Kobayashi (JP), Tara Sands (EN)

  • Distaff Counterpart: Of Hyoga, in a really vague way. She has, at least, killed someone close to her, which was practically a Running Gag for Hyoga. The personalities are also similar. Also, both wear Cloths based on birds.
  • Facial Markings: It seems to be common for her race, as Sage, Hakurei, Shion and Mu also have it.
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: Her skimpy dressing style contrasts greatly with her calm, mature personality.
  • Huge Girl, Tiny Guy: She is really tall comparing to Tenma and Yato. This also implies that she's quite older than them.
  • Mask Power: Even if she hates wearing it. At first, she did wear it after getting back the Silver Cloth and would only remove it in front of Tenma and Yato. But later, she ditches the mask completely.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Played With. Her outfit is entirely open from neck to navel, save for a Sarashi wrapped at her chest.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: When Yato rescues Tenma from Manigoldo's cage, Yuzuriha greets them with her Silver Cloth on and her mask. It makes Tenma freak out, thinking that a Silver Saint has followed them, even though it is clearly Yuzuriha. (for us audience, anyway...)
  • Psychic Powers
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She wears it as a keepsake from her mother, and it seems she has absolutely no problem fighting in it, even though we all know that in real life, when you fight, the last thing you want is to have a long, thick scarf restricting your movements.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Beautiful!: Doesn't have a problem with showing people her face, though she points out that she doesn't wear it because of Yato and Tenma.
  • Ship Tease:
    • The anime, especially, likes to hint at Shion/Yuzuriha.
    • Don't forget her moments with Yato. Specially in the ending, where they get stuck together in Jamir after losing their powers. She even gets angry and smacks him when he laments on their situation! Yato seems to have a mild crush on her, as he blushes when Yuzuriha says that she will only remove her mask in front of him, and get disappointed when she mentions "Oh, and Tenma too!" She actually just abandons the mask afterwards anyway, though. It's implied that Kiki, Mu's apprentice, is Yato & Yuzuriha's descendant.
  • Show Some Leg: Both the manga and anime focus a lot on her legs, letting her wearing stockings/high boots and kicking a lot.
  • The Stoic
  • Tsundere: A mild example for Yato. She gets slightly angry and disappointed in the last chapter when he said they should go back to the Sanctuary instead stay stuck up in Jamir together. They do remain there, anyway.
  • Taken for Granite: Reverted by Athena.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: With Tenma and Yato.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: A rare female example. Considering that all she uses to cover her upper body is a bunch of bandages, and her Silver Cloth doesn't help much in covering her chest further, it's safe to say that, yes, she spents the whole series shirtless.

    Altar Hakurei

Altar Hakurei

Voiced by: Kenyū Horiuchi (JP), Paul St. Peter, Kaiji Tang (young) (EN)

  • The Blacksmith: Very skilled in the art of fixing Cloths.
  • Blood Knight: Implied in chapter 88, downright confirmed in following chapters.
  • Survivor Guilt: Being one of the survivors of the previous Holy War.
  • Twin Switch: As he and Sage are twins and he isn't very well-known, preferring to work behind the scenes, he poses as his brother after the latter's death, so the morale of the army won't decay over the loss of its leader.

    Minor Silver Saints

Cerberus, Auriga and Sagitta Saints

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/SilverSaints_3879.png

  • Adaptation Expansion: The anime shows them on the trail of Skeleton Soldiers in Italy, on a mission to locate the Forest Cathedral.
  • Came Back Wrong: Brought back by Hades, they were used as puppets in an attempt to kill Athena.
  • Deadly Disc: Auriga's killer saucers.
  • Epic Flail: Cerberus's weapon is a big flail.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Though they're forced by Hades's power to attack Athena, they're internally struggling against it.
  • No Name Given: Only their Cloth names are known.
  • Out-Gambitted: Pandora lured them into a trap. She knew they would leave at least one Skeleton alive so he would run back into the Forest Cathedral and they could follow it and discover the location; the moment they arrive there, however, they're immediately surrounded by strong Specters and killed.
  • Rain of Arrows: Sagitta, and no they are not just Annoying Arrows.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: They are killed fairy early and are irrelevant to the plot.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Of Cerberus Dante, Auriga Capella and Sagitta Ptolemy.
  • Tears of Blood: Cerberus, asking for Athena's forgiveness upon being freed of Hades's power (that is, mortally wounded).
