Gold Saints

    In General
  • A Day in the Limelight: Each Gold Saint has a Gaiden volume dedicated to them.
  • Doomed by Canon: It's known in the classic series that only Shion and Dohko survived the holy war.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Except Shion and Dohko. While not main characters, the Gold Saints are the elite of Athena's army and often shows up to save the heroes from Hades most dangerous followers, often at the cost of their lives.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Downplayed. They are similar to the Gold Saints of the classic series in looks and attacks, but their personalities can be very different. For example:
    • Saga and Aspros are similar in role and appearance. Personality-wise, they are complete opposite. Here's a tip: Finding a scene where Aspros is talking about himself, and himself ONLY is much easier than a scene where Saga cried, and that pretty much happens in ALL spin-offs featuring the original Gold Saints. As you can see, that's really says something.
    • Deathmask and Manigoldo. The former is an abhorrent Serial Killer while the latter wants to save everyone from dying needlessly.
  • Western Zodiac: The constellations of their cloths.

    Aries Shion

Aries Shion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Shion_4154.png
Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki (JP), Max Mittelman (EN)

  • Barrier Warrior: Because of his Crystal Wall attack, which was powerful enough to prevent Minos most powerful attack from destroying Albafica's village.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Pulls one saving Agasha from Minos. Too bad Shion himself is almost killed by Minos and needs another Big Damn Heroes moment to ensue (see Albafica's entry).
  • Combination Attack: Did an Athena Exclamation with Sisyphus and Regulus to open the gates to the Lost Canvas.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Two important scars. One in the back of his neck from when he was almost beheaded by Balron René as a child; another in his arm, inflicted by Hakurei shortly after in order to pour some blood into the dying boy.
  • Facial Markings: Short rounded eyebrows as a half-Lemurian.
  • Not So Stoic: Shion is serious most fo time, but goes absolutely batshit when Alone killed Hakurei.
  • Psychic Powers: To lift Pisces Albafica's dead body.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Dohko.
  • Ship Tease: The anime, especially, likes to hint at Shion/Yuzuriha.
  • Signature Move: Stardust Revolution.
  • Teleportation: Part of his Psychokinesis ability.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: He really enjoys learning the history of each Cloth he repairs.

    Taurus Aldebaran/Rasgado

Taurus Aldebaran/Rasgado

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Aldebaran_3246.png
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (JP), Jamieson Price (EN)

  • Badass Armfold: As usual for Taurus Saints, he likes to fight with his arms crossed.
  • Badass Boast: When confronted by Spectres and told he's outnumbered, lacking the advantage Albafica had and can't win, he crosses him arms and says he will fight them ALL as is. He backs it up (in a single attack and never unfolding his arms)!
  • Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: Averted.
  • Cruel Mercy: Averted; he lets Kagaho live, but only because he sees no evil in him.
  • Determinator: He takes the most physical damage of all the Gold Saints without actually dying. The guy's a wall.
  • Eye Scream: Kagaho blinds him in one eye.
  • Friend to All Children: He adopted lots of kids that he found abandoned in the streets, the most plot-important of which are Teneo, Celintha and Saro.
  • Gentle Giant: He's tall and burly, but really likes kids.
  • Handicapped Badass: Stabs his own eardrums to avoid an enemy's sound hypnosis.
  • Honor Before Reason: Aldebaran could have killed Kagaho if he wanted, but choose not to because he sawe kindness in him.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Burly, strong AND the fastest of all the Gold Saints.
  • Meaningful Name: Rasgado means 'torn'; funnily enough, it also means 'ripped', which can entirely describe all the Taurus Saints as a whole.
  • Mentor Archetype: To Regulus, Dohko, Tenma, Teneo, Salo and Celintha.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Kagaho about how he's too violent for his own good and how he's going to destroy everyone he loves if he doesn't tone it down.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Rasgado/Hasgard.
  • That Man Is Dead: In a variation of this, Aldebaran claimed that he abandoned his real name, Rasgado, to dedicate himself to being a Saint. Thus he adopted 'Aldebaran', the name of one of the stars in the Taurus constellation.

    Gemini Defteros

Gemini Defteros

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Defteros_9967.png

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Platonic, familial version with his brother Aspros. Initially he worshipped Aspros a lot, and pretty much listened to anything he would say, but stopped listening to him after realizing how much Aspros had been corrupted, and he even ended up killing him. Even so, yes, he did stop listening to Aspros, but he never stopped loving his older twin. He was even willing to die to cleanse Aspros' corruption. Hell, even death doesn't stop him from loving Aspros, as seen in the fight between Aspros and Mephistopheles Youma, the Gemini Cloth, infused with his soul, protected Aspros. You might wonder whether Aspros really deserved that sacrifice from Defteros, after all the abuse and insults, and even worse, it was Aspros who killed Defteros. Even Mephistopheles Youma thinks so too.
Mephistopheles Youma: The Gemini Cloth? The younger brother? Impossible! He killed you! Why are you protecting him !?
  • Another Dimension: Used this skill to save Dohko in his way delivering Athena's Cloth.
  • The Atoner: As Asmita points out, his sin lies in not seeing what his brother was going through, though Defteros feels more guilty about killing his own brother in the first place. He then spends the following two years trying to earn the Gemini Cloth to fill his brother's shoes.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: In their childhood, Defteros was shunned and discriminated against as he was the younger twin, and people apparently thought that younger twins would only bring trouble. Aspros was the only one who was kind to him and did anything to defend Defteros from others' assaults.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Under the influence of Aspros' Demon Emperor Fist to kill the current Pope Sage.
  • Composite Character: Has elements of both Kanon and Guilty.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Dark blue hair and matching eyes.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Subverted. He has a single protruding fang, which is more than enough to bite Perseus Saint's Medusa shield into pieces under his "demon" persona. That being said, he still fights on Athena's side.
  • Fusion Dance: By having his soul infused with the Gemini Cloth worn by Aspros.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Under the "demon" persona, he bears no ill-will towards Tenma after the latter proven himself serious. And even after being used by Aspros, he still has the heart to forgive his older brother.
  • Hot-Blooded: His Kanon Island "demon" persona.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Invoked. As part of his "demon" persona, the people of Kanon Island are convinced that he actually eats anyone that comes near him; whether he does is a matter of debate.
  • Made of Iron: He lives alongside magma river during his time in Kanon Island. The only reason why he doesn't get burnt is because he activates his 7th Sense at all time.
  • Meaningful Name: Defteros means "second one", signifying his status as the 2nd twin.
  • Mr. Fanservice : In his time on Kanon Island, he is a Walking Shirtless Scene and wears tight pants that shows the firm shape of his ass. Yum.
  • Old Friend: Of Asmita. His ghost asked Defteros to wear Gemini Cloth once more.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Originally, he's portrayed as an Expy of Guilty from the original series, but just about everyone could tell he was really an Expy of Gemini, just not exactly clear of which one.
  • The Redeemer: To Aspros.
  • Signature Move: Galaxian Explosion, though he avoids using it because it reminds him of Aspros.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: He pushed Tenma to reach the 7th Sense in the middle of magma river in the span of 3 days. Later, his final test for Tenma is for Tenma to stop the volcano eruption. If Tenma couldn't do it, the entire village under the volcano will perish.
  • Spanner in the Works: To Youma/Kairos. See All Love Is Unrequited above.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Defteros or Deuteros.

    Gemini Aspros

Gemini Aspros

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Aspros_7617.png
  • All for Nothing: He would have been the Pope should he had been more patient, as Sisyphus refused the post. He didn't even pass the first test before he attempted to kill the Pope for what he thought was a personal insult towards him.
  • Ambition Is Evil: What Youma corrupted is only his love to Defteros. He goes down the wrong path because he is too ambitious, selfish and arrogant to begin with.
  • Another Dimension: Do you seriously expect a Gemini Saint incapable of using this skill? This is how he disabled Mephistopheles Youma's Time Master power.
  • The Atoner: As part of his atonement, he battles Hades and then Mephistopheles.
  • Back for the Dead: First revived by Hades, then comes back again after his first fight against Mephistopheles Youma.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Used to had loads of it as a child, but slowly fades away after Mephistopheles convinced him that Defteros just might not be as innocent as he seem to be.
  • Broken Pedestal: He turned out not to be admirable as Defteros has ever hoped him to be. He proved to be this when he uses Demon Emperor Fist against his own brother to kill the current Pope Sage.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Blue eyes and hair.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He wants to be the next Pope so bad, he basically hoarded as many knowledge as he can. But even though he failed to be the next Pope, this still proved to be useful during his fight against Mephistopheles.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Defeats Mephistopheles Youma, who actually is the younger brother of Chronos and a god of time himself, Kairos.
  • Evil Twin: The older one.
  • Fusion Dance: By having Defteros' soul infused with the Gemini Cloth he wore.
  • Genius Bruiser: Demonstrated and boasted this to Mephistopheles, that in order to become a Pope, a swelling amount of knowledge is needed.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Subverted, as in Hades hasn't actually reincarnated in Alone's body, but he does ended up coming back fighting for Athena's side.
  • Ironic Name: Aspros means "white". Ironic, since he is the Evil Twin and becomes one of Hades's specters. Subverted since he used to be a good person before Mephistopheles Youma corrupted him.
  • It's All About Me: He doesn't care if people will die if their get in his way, if fighting in his full power would kill people around him, all that matters is himself. Even when the deceased Gold Saints retured and say their reason to help, he just said that his reason is himself.
  • Paint It Black: While he was under the influence of his own Demon Emperor Fist and at the service of Hades.
  • These Hands Have Killed: What he said to shoo away Tenma, admitting his murder of Defteros.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The Pope scolds him for incurring in grievous sin when he should have easily passed his test of character.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Before being corrupted by Youma, Aspros was extremely kind-hearted in his childhood. The only one to be kind to Defteros when everybody else hated him, he even assured Defteros that he would protect him at all costs, even if he had to die. No wonder Defteros loved him so much. As seen in Sagittarius Gaiden, he was friend with Rasgardo and Sisyphus in their younger days, and was a total sweetie.

    Cancer Manigoldo

Cancer Manigoldo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Manigoldo_3656.png
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (JP), Keith Silverstein (EN)

  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up and saves Tenma, Yato and Yuzuriha when they're completely surrounded by Veronica's horde of zombies.
  • Blood Knight: Indeed he loves fighting, and he looks all giddy when Hades/Alone shows up at the Sanctuary.
  • Dead Person Conversation: To Shion and Tenma.
  • Determinator: Literally continues charging at Thanatos despite repeatedly getting injuries and failing to do beyond a tickle towards the God for most of their battle.... Pays off the end because not only did Thantos's armor get thrown off from repeated attacks but his human vessel even got injured and Pope Sage was given just enough time to prepare the seal for the god.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Manigoldo punches Thanatos, the God of Death himself, in the face and even menages to seal him with the help of his mentor, Sage.
  • Dynamic Entry: "I'm sorry, queeny, but your dolls are going back to the Underworld now!" How he meets up with Thanatos and Hypnos.
  • Fastball Special: Throws Yato at Veronica so he uses Unicorn Gallop on him to test if he's really immortal. Yato is displeased.
  • Foil: To Tenma. Both are young men raised in Italy who lost their families very early on, faced a difficult life, were recruited by Gold Saints, brought into the Sanctuary to train and ultimately became talented Saints themselves. The contrasts are even lampshaded by Athena and Pope Sage.
  • Four Is Death: Fourth zodiacal sign, represented by a guy who sees spirits and whose power is deeply related to death and the supernatural.
  • I See Dead People: Could see souls since a young age.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Loves fighting and is an ass to the main heroes, but he still protects Athena and is a much better person than his successor.
  • Meaningful Name: Means "Rascal" or "Rogue".
  • Murderous Thighs: Rare Male Example. With his "Acubens" technique, he can use both his legs as a crab's pincer to grip and crush an enemy in halves.
  • Playing with Fire: One of his techniques.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Yup. Develops into a Slasher Smile at times.
  • Slasher Smile: Manigoldo is a huge fan of this trope. He has this expression when he burns Veronica to death with his Ignis Fatuus attack.
  • Sociopathic Hero: Doesn't understand why Tenma is so angry that his village got destroyed, that stuff happens in wars all the time, never mind that he went through the same thing.
  • Sole Survivor: In the anime, he is revealed to be the Sole Survivor of a massacre in his hometown.
  • Taking You with Me: To Thanatos' physical body.
  • Technicolor Fire: His attacks' flames are blue.
  • Thanatos Gambit: He sacrifices himself to take down Thanatos physical body so his soul rushes to possess Sage's body, who's prepared for that and uses his life to seal the God in a box.
  • Troubled, but Cute: He sure would wear a jacket and ride a motorcycle a if he lived nowadays.

    Leo Ilias

Leo Ilias

    Leo Regulus

Leo Regulus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Regulus_1575.png

  • All Your Powers Combined: Deconstructed. Regulus can copy powers and his trump card is a technique consisting of the signature moves of all the Gold Saints combined, but it has a high price: since his body can't endure the side-effects, leading to his death.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Nothing escapes him. Once he sees an attack, he's able to fully understand how it works and proceed to perform it better than its original user.
  • Badass Adorable: One could almost describe him as a Cosmos nerd.
  • Berserk Button: Wyvern Rhadamanthys, his father's murderer.
  • Brainy Brunette: Said and proven to be a battle genius.
  • Child Prodigy: Discovered to be one during early trainings.
  • Combination Attack: With Shion and Sisyphus.
  • Cute Little Fangs: As a little child.
  • Death by Flashback: He dissipates into thin air as he sees his father and Sisyphus meet.however, kill the godly part of Rhadamanthys and left him almost dead entirely, as stated by Alone.]]

    Scorpio Kardia

Scorpio Kardia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Kardia_4381.png
Voiced by: Koji Yusa (JP), Christopher Corey Smith (EN)

  • Back from the Dead: In his Gaiden story, he died after defeating Huesda with Katakaio Antares, complete with a smile. But then was immediately revived by Quetzalcotl in Calvera's body by removing the Obsidian Fang from Huesda off his heart.
  • Badass Boast: From his Gaiden story, after he defeated the Jaguars that attacked Calvera's tavern.
Hah! What a bunch of weaklings! Won't you stand the real heat of my heart!? Does it hurt? You were shot by the golden scorpion. Consider yourself lucky if you faint before the pain kills you!
  • Badass in Distress: In his Gaiden story, he was in complete mercy in Huesda's hand by having his heart grabbed from the inside. Sasha arrived just in time before he lose consicousness.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up to save child Yato from a huge Specter and takes him along to the Sanctuary to train and become a Saint.
  • Blood Knight: Even more so than Manigoldo. He couldn't contain himself that his fingers are twitching and asked Degel to let him fight Rhadamanthys instead, to put himself at ease.
My needle... It's bothering me... It doesn't want to calm down. Degel, I know you have a score to settle with him because he killed your friend... But I can't contain myself any longer. I have to rip him into pieces to calm down!
  • Cast from Lifespan: Katakaio Scarlet Needle is his version that inserts heat into his opponent's body produced by Kardia's heart, this will eventually leads to Katakaio Antares burning his opponent's heart at the cost of Kardia's life.
  • Character Tics: He would sometimes lick his scarlet nail in the middle of excitement.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: Really enjoys torturing his opponents and the heat that surges inside his heart whenever he burns his Cosmo in the heat of the battle.
  • Deadly Upgrade: Because it's Cast from Lifespan. But he did not mind it at all.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Delivers terrible burns to Rhadamanthys.
I might be an insect, but you're just a lapdog.
  • Death Seeker: Knowing he would die sooner or later, Kardia wanted to have a really good fight that would kill him.
  • Died Standing Up: As his heartbeat fades, he counted on Degel to be able to accomplish his own goal in life before dies smiling.
  • Determinator: To the point of insanity even within the series' standards due to being a Combat Sadomasochist and Death Seeker.
  • Dissonant Laughter: All the time, even when he’s having his heart ripped off by Huesda in his Gaiden story.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Usually, the Saint who takes a newcomer to the Sanctuary (one way or another) is the one who trains him (Taurus Aldebaran, Libra Dohko, even Pope Sage), so he's implied to be this to Yato.
  • Foreshadowing: He didn't sense Unity's presence a moment before laying his eyes on him on their first meeting.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Genuinely cares about others' well-being, while saying rude things to their faces for most of the time.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Hinted with Degel.
  • Hot-Blooded: Almost too literally.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: In his Gaiden story, he decided to bring Sasha together with him out of boredom.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Normally he shots with his right hand, but after Rhadamanthys broke his right hand's needle, he simply shot his left hand's one.
You are really guillible to think I had only one needle... The best one is the one closest to the heart! The left needle!
  • I Shall Taunt You: He worked this way to redirect Rhadamanthys's aggression towards himself, instead of Degel.
Hah... Hahah... HAHAHAHAHA!!! In a second? Take care of us? Allow me to laugh! If you really want to kill us that much, you better not miss your chance, Wyvern!
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As demonstrated in his Gaiden story; He may fight on Athena's side, but that doesn't stop him from traumatizing young Sasha by joyfully torturing Nahualpilli in front of her. When Sasha critized him that his action doesn't make him different from his opponent, Kardia justified himself because his opponent is a thief or may be even worst, an empty person by skinning others' skins for his sole warmth.
  • Living on Borrowed Time: He received a drop of Athena's blood the age of 10 to prolong his life, since then he was given the choice of longevity through Misopethamenos or suffer the burn of the divine blood until his ultimate death. No points for guessing what he choose.
  • Meaningful Name: Kardia means 'heart' which refers to his degenerative heart disease.
    • Katakaio in Ancient Greek means "destroyed by flame" or "utterly burned".
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: The Roguish to Degel's Noble.
  • Oh, Crap!: In his Gaiden story, he underestimated Huesda, even making fun of him... until, Huesda got ahold of his heart. Kardia was genuinely freaked out.
  • One-Liner Echo: In his Gaiden story, Calvera said to Sasha to call for her if any guy bothers her. When the Jaguars attacked the tavern, Kardia saved her immediately. But not before repeating her words and proceeded to kick-ass.
Hah! "If any guy troubles you, just call me!"
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents simply dumped him in a public hospital upon learning he was terminally ill.
  • Pet the Dog: His Gaiden story is dedicated to prove this point with Sasha, other than Degel in the main story.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Degel's Blue.
  • Slasher Smile: Big time, he should have a contest with Manigoldo regarding this trope.
  • Sociopathic Hero
Scorpio Kardia: I'm not that loyal in my heart. My mission to this underwater temple... My decision to fight you. Everything I did because I wanted to! I did it because it might reignite the flame inside of me!
Wyvern Rhadamanthys: I cannot stand your way of thinking! You're not a warrior, you're just a selfish, immature man!
  • To the Pain: Scarlet Needle, an attack that shots up to 15 strikes and stacks pain by each strike. It doesn't help that Scorpio Saints ought to explain how the skill works after shooting a few strikes into their opponent's body — most of which are first-timers.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Apples, to the point that it became the only thing we ever see him ate on-screen.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: A very active member of the YOLO community. When Degel asked him whether he would like it if he could get rid of his disease and live forever, Kardia didn't hesitate to brush that idea off immediately, preferred to accept thing as it was and to live a short but passionate life.
I want to use all of my power as soon as possible. Until then I want to feel all the pain and heat that I can... while I fight as a Saint.

    Sagittarius Sisyphus

Sagittarius Sisyphus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Sisyphus_8687.png
Voiced by: Hirofumi Nojima (JP), Patrick Seitz (EN)

  • Angst Coma: Hypnos gets him trapped deep inside the Dream World as soon as he falls into a coma, but he doesn't make any effort to get out. Out of guilt (see entry below).
  • Bodyguard Crush: Strongly implied to be in love with Sasha.
  • Combination Attack: Twice. Once with El Cid and Sasha against the Dream Gods, the other instance with Shion and Regulus.
  • Declaration of Protection: Says this to Athena after snapping out of his Angst Coma.
  • Determinator: His eyes were blinded, his body was broken, his heart ripped out, his consciousness fading away, but through sheer willpower, his body still moves and is able to perform the Athena Exclamation.
  • Disability Superpower: Reaches the Eighth Sense through it, allowing him to defeat Aiacos.
  • Eye Scream: He irreversibly damages his own eyes to battle Aiacos.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: As the Sagittarius Saint, he has golden feathered wings. When he almost turns into a Specter, they turn black.
  • He Knows Too Much: One of the reasons why Hypnos and the Dream Gods want to hold him in Morphea. He dug around a lot of intel on the Twin Gods, and Hades' forces obviously don't want him to be able to use it.
  • Handicapped Badass: He's still perfectly capable of kicking Specter ass after going blind.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Alone shoots his own arrow back at him, causing his coma.
  • It's All My Fault: Thinks it was him who caused the Holy War by taking away Athena from Hades' side.
  • Meaningful Name: Sisyphus was a king punished by the Gods for his arrogance: they made him roll a boulder up a hill to redeem himself, but before the boulder got to the top, it would always roll back down, no matter how many times he tried.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Took Sasha away from Tenma and Alone, thus messing up Athena's reincarnation gambit that had a high chance of stopping the Holy War from happening at least for one generation.
    • Though Athena DOES clarify afterwards that her very birth IS an omen of the Holy War.
  • Power Fist: Although he does have a named technique, his most effective attack to date is an unnamed Cosmo-infused Power Fist.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: He let Sphinx Pharaoh rip his heart out just to prove that he was completely loyal to Athena when he could have kicked his ass easily (if he manages to do it without his heart in place...). Even if he does manage to perform Athena's Exclamation to allow everybody else to pass as a last stand, it still feels like a pointless death.
  • Start of Darkness: His guilt problems get so bad that he nearly turns into a Specter. But subverted as Athena manages to counter it.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Being Ilias's little brother and Regulus's uncle, Sisyphus in his youth was pretty much a Regulus with headband.
    • The funny thing though, is that neither he nor his nephew look anything similar to their brother/father.

    Capricorn El Cid

Capricorn El Cid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ElCid_4528.png
Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (JP), Neil Kaplan (EN)

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: In the form of his arms infused with his cosmos.
  • Combination Attack: With Sisyphus (and Sasha) against the Dream Gods.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: El Cid was never a happy-go-lucky man, but the misfortunes suffered by his close friends — the accident that rendered Felser's arm useless and the death of Mine, after a long struggle against tuberculosis — turned him downright sour.
  • Taking the Bullet: He is killed by Oneiros's self-destruction while pushing the dream god away so the explosion couldn't reach and kill Tenma as Oneiros intended.
  • Signature Move: Excalibur, which goes unnamed until he deems it perfect just before his death.

    Aquarius Degel

Aquarius Degel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Degel_18.png
Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa (JP), Chris Niosi (EN)

  • An Ice Person: His power, also the reason he made a great partner for Kardia, as he was the only one who could cool down Kardia's fever.
    • His powers require him to be cool-headed, otherwise he wouldn't be able to concentrate his Cosmo to stop atoms. This is made clear when he loses it against Rhadamanthys and rendered his attacks less effective. Lampshaded by Kardia.
Scorpio Kardia: Keep your cool, my dear Degel. Fighting like this is not your style.
  • Always Save the Girl: During his mission in his Gaiden story and the mission he was given in the main story, he ended up needing to save Fluorite and Seraphina. Though the word "save" is not quite right for the latter, as he chose to stay by her side in death.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: His last words hinted this before dying together with Seraphina to watch over Unity and Blugrad's future.
You have suffered so much... Even after death, you continued looking after your brother even while he was on the wrong path. Lady Seraphina. From now on I will remain by your side to help you with that task. To protect Blugrad and it's future.
  • Badass Bookworm: Described to be the most intellegent Saint in the Sanctuary. Made evidently by having his temple filled with books.
  • Beneath the Mask: Although he tries so hard to act cold and distant - to some success when interacting with people who aren't very close to him - deep down he's somewhat passionate and impulsive.
  • Berserk Button: His aloof demeanour is magically gone if someone close to him is injured or in trouble.
  • Composite Character: Is Camus, with elements from Hyoga and Isaac.
  • Cultured Warrior: He becomes annoyed and apologizes for Kardia to Unity, when the former insults the values of knowledge contained in the books all over the underground archive that turned out to lead to where Poseidon is sealed.
Please forgive the foolish words coming from this man, Unity.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Subdued Poseidon's awakening and frozen Atlantis at the cost of his life.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: One of the reasons for his Heroic Sacrifice is that he lets Unity to deliver the the remaining piece of the Orichalcum, broken by Pandora, personally to Athena to win the Holy War and to not waste Kardia's death. Also, they can keep the promise they made since childhood where, at least now, one of them become the bridge between Blugrad and the outside world.
  • Grim Up North: Blugrad, where he spent his training years and childhood with Unity and Seraphina and their father Garcia. It is only after the Holy War begun, the town became deserted.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Hinted with Kardia.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Degel uses Freezing Coffin on himself and Seraphina along with the entire city of Atlantis in order to prevent Poseidon's awakening.
  • Human Popsicle: Freezing Coffin, which he used in massive scale for Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Kill It with Ice: Diamond Dust and Aurora Execution.
  • Meaningful Name: Dégel in French means "to thaw" or "to unfreeze". A subtle reference to his true nature, and how his stern facade "unfreezes" when personal matters are involved.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: Noble to Kardia's Rougish.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Kardia's Red.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Started out with Tranquil Fury after Stunned Silence. It doesn't help that his self-induced weakened attacks are brushed off easily by Rhadamanthys.
Perfect, I will begin by avenging Unity... AND YOUR REMAINS WILL BE LEFT FROZEN ON THE BATTLEFIELD!!
  • Ship Tease: Degel is teased with three possible love interests:
    • His relationship with Fluorite, the maid that he rescued in a french castle and turned his sidekick investigating mysteries. She clearly developed romantic feelings for Degel. He kept the glasses that she gave him and encouraged her to continue writting, though if their relationship developed after that is unkown.
    • His visible affection towards Seraphina can be interpreted as romantic, especially in his anecdote. He reaches out to the woman by directly placing his hands on her cheeks after some years of seperation and on his dying moments, despite being unable to reciprocate as said woman has died some time ago, seem to imply something.
    • Possibly with Kardia, who is his Heterosexual Life Partner and his most popular ship.
  • Stoic Spectacles: They come with being a Hot Librarian. He seem to only wear them when reading books. It's explained in his Gaiden story that during the mission, his vision was distorted by his master, Krest's attack. His spectacles are Flourite's dad memento given to him after she learned the fact.
  • Stunned Silence: Of horror, when he sees Rhadamanthys impaled Unity on the entrance to Poseidon's temple.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He's an awful lot warmer than his eventual successor Camus.
  • This Cannot Be!: His response when he found Seraphina inside Poseidon's temple.
  • Undying Loyalty: The reason why he's stronger than Unity although the latter used Poseidon's power by using the Orichalcum.
Sea Dragon Unity: I am not the Unity you know from your childhood. He died along with that promise! I will conquer the world to save Blugrad and nobody is going to stop me!
Aquarius Degel: No Unity! The promise is still alive! It is because of the promise that I am standing here today before you...!
    • And to his last dying breath, he keeps his promise with Unity.
It is time that you fulfill your promise. The promise we made under the Northern Cross, which is why... I want you to live. My friend. I leave Blugrad in your hands.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Of revenge, which goes against his fighting style. If he fights Rhadamanthys in this mental state, he'll get killed less than half an hour. Thank goodness he brought Kardia along.

  • Big Damn Heroes: When Shion's death at the hands of Minos seemed certain... Albafica resurfaces, covered in blood and ready for more!
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Even after Minos used Cosmic Marionettion on him, made him beating his own face, he's still look handsome as ever.
  • Bloody Murder: His Crimson Thorn technique where he uses his own poisonous blood as weapon.
  • Cast from Lifespan: Since Albafica uses his own poisoned blood for ranged attacks, there is a limit on how much he can use without dying.
  • Poisonous Person: His entire being, down to his blood is poisonous.
  • Power Incontinence: Being immune to poison made him poisonous as well, this is why he forbids anyone getting near him.
  • Something about a Rose: Having rose motif gave a him subtle reading of being a thorny rose that hurt anyone who touches him.
