    Year 1 Students

Anri Hayashida

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anri.png
Arcana: XVIII - The Moon
Persona: Olympia
Played by: Shademaster

"I want to be a better person, and make people smile... by saving them."

A young girl in her first year of high school. Anri is hardly talkative on her own, and requires puppets to fully function in a conversation. Without her puppets, she pretty much refuses to say anything, and is very quick to ditch most of her puppets in favor of new ones, though she has two she usually keeps around. Her main puppets are a grumpy sock monster called Tsukkomi and an optimistic cardboard puppet called Boke, though Boke has since been destroyed and replaced by a cyborg version called BOK-3.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She fits the requirements of being dark-haired and fairly distant, but she's rather short.
  • Badass Adorable: Cute, shy, and dangerous due to her strong physical attacks. Her Persona even has guns!
  • Big Brother Worship: She outright calls Sumio "Big Bro" and obviously cares about him very much.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Literally; her main puppets are named Boke and Tsukkomi, and they fit the archetypes they're named after to a T; Boke is happy, dull-witted, and oblivious, and Tsukkomi is grouchy, cynical, and short-tempered.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • In Beneath The Mask, things are looking up for Anri... until her uncle comes in and tears Boke in half. This leads to her running away to the Ruins and assuming her monster form.
    • A few months later, just when she's starting to get better, she gets kidnapped by Aimicchi and is forced to host a twisted game show.
  • Color Motif: Black and white. Boke has pink and Tsukkomi has gray.
  • The Cutie: To the point where a running joke on the site is the "Anri Protection Squad".
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Around close friends (or, ahem, "partners"), she doesn't use her puppets as often and is a little more playful.
  • Depraved Kids' Show Host: Her puppets take this role in Aimicchi's show, acting superficially charming while committing acts like berating everyone and brutally tearing apart the contestants' puppets (which are treated as real people here).
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: She calls Aimi her "partner" and insists she's not her friend. Hmm...
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Her outfit has shades of this. She also speaks rather formally.
  • Emotionless Girl: Anri appears as this, though she expresses a lot through her puppets. This becomes a centerpiece of her monster form.
  • Genki Girl: Boke is always perky and energetic.
  • Gravity Master: Olympia specializes in Gry spells.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has one after her uncle tears Boke apart in front of her.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She has a good heart, but the whole reason she primarily speaks through puppets is because she's thoroughly convinced she's a terrible person.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: She thinks that she caused the fire that killed her parents due to forgetting to blow out candles.
  • Interrupted Declaration of Love: Anri is about to admit she likes Aimi, but then her uncle comes in, and everything goes downhill.
  • Jerkass: Anri is far from one, but Tsukkomi used to be; Anri even has him say that's his character trait in a thread.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Tsukkomi has developed into this, being softer than before (though still with a sarcastic edge). This is likely due to Boke's death. He temporarily devolves back into his initial Jerkass characterization in Anri's show.
  • Little Miss Snarker: If Tsukkomi is any indication, Anri can be rather sarcastic when she wants.
  • More Dakka: Olympia's physical attacks are flavored as tons and tons of bullets, especially when she's under the effects of Power Charge.
  • Nice Girl: Despite her quirks, at her core, Anri is a very sweet and compassionate young lady.
  • Official Couple: With Aimi.
  • One-Winged Angel: Transforms into Monster Form due to having an identity crisis. Her Monster Form is a black shadowy being with photorealistic facial features, puppet strings attached to it, and a bunch of hands sprouting out the bottom, each one holding a modified puppet of Anri.
  • The Quiet One: Played with. Anri technically talks a lot, but only rarely speaks as herself. Most of her lines come from her acting as her puppets.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's rather shy, and needs her puppets to function in a regular conversation. Without any puppet to communicate through, she clams up and refuses to speak. If she's confronted with something that scares her she pretty much shuts up entirely and has her puppets take over. Thankfully, her Persona mask seems to help make her feel more confident, as she doesn't need puppets in the Ruins.
  • Stepford Smiler: Alternates between this and Stepford Snarker, with Boke being the Smiler and Tsukkomi being the Snarker.
  • Subverted Kids' Show: Her game show is a cutesy parody of Sesame Street with a cheery, crayon-like neighborhood full of friendly puppets... and occasional hints of fleshy things under the puppets and other horrific things.
  • Survivor Guilt: She will never get over the fact that her parents died instead of her.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Boke and Tsukkomi are this; they're effectively the only remains of her parents, which makes it more tragic when Botan tears Boke apart.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Every time she's gone to the Ruins it's ended up horribly. In two instances she had a panic attack and in one she entered as a monster. This is all topped off when she's kidnapped by Aimicchi and forced to host a game show that reflects her trauma, putting on how screwed up she is for all to see.
  • Troubled, but Cute: She's got immense survivor guilt and has to communicate through puppets. That said, she's pretty adorable.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Rebuilds Boke after she gets ripped apart as BOK-3.

Haruko Kurosawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haruko_0.png
Arcana: XIX - The Sun
Played by: Shademaster

"You'd be surprised how many people settle for something too expensive, or not of enough quality... with the right tweaks, this service can be lifechanging!"

An optimistic, cheery young lady at Taiyoutono, and the daughter of an extremely successful business couple. While she always has a smile on her face and is seemingly impossible to upset, Haruko always seems to have something off about her due to her demeanor. She's almost entirely focused on sales and doesn't seem to get basic social interaction, making her a very strange person to speak to.

  • Abusive Parents: Her parents didn't physically abuse her, but they were so focused on her success that they ended up molding their kid into something little better than a machine. Her mom is also implied to be a Corrupt Corporate Executive.
  • Genki Girl: Peppy and energetic, even if it's just a manufactured personality.
  • Innocently Insensitive: All Haruko wants to do is help people (literally); unfortunately, this ends in her usually being insensitive to people.
  • Nice Girl: A very odd version, but Haruko nonetheless is a friendly person who wants to help others... even if it's because she's never been taught otherwise.
  • No Social Skills: Haruko's idea of "social skills" is communicating with a charismatic demeanor meant to sell things. When in an actual casual conversation, she ends up extremely confused.
  • Stepford Smiler: Type B; there is literally nothing behind her business persona because her parents never taught her otherwise. This is reflected in her Persona's design, as Crassus has a smile painted on its face.

Mami Arai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mami_1.jpg
Arcana: XVIII - The Moon
Persona: Matilda
Played by: Super Dog Coin

"I guess you could say I dived... too deep into my book."

A perky first-year at Taiyoutono with a penchant for books and wordplay. Mami is a very friendly and approachable individual with an interest in language and literature, to the point where she shamelessly incorporates puns, metaphors, and other forms of wordplay into her speech quite frequently. Despite her cheeriness, her gender is a rather sensitive issue due to her being transgender and not having come out as such to her parents yet.

  • Dark Is Not Evil: Matilda uses Dark spells primarily, but Mami is as sweet as can be. Discussed by her and Kameko in a thread, where the two share some playful banter over it.
  • Nice Girl: A very sweet and compassionate person who's always willing to lend a hand to her allies.
  • Pungeon Master: She's a big fan of puns, much to the chagrin of other people around her.

Yasue Ito

Arcana: IX - The Hermit
Persona: Arke
Played by: Super Dog Coin

"Yasue, come on. It's not like whomever you might meet is going to bite your head off or something."

A reclusive, intelligent first-year. Yasue is an introvert at heart who has spent most of her time as a shut-in, but is starting to branch out as of late and meet more people. She isn't particularly talkative, but she is nonetheless a nice person who can get along with most and tends to talk to herself a lot. While shy, she's at the top of her class when it comes to academics.

  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Yasue isn't very talkative and prefers not to be, but that's not to be taken as her being a pushover. Her Persona has a surprising amount of offensive skills.
  • Blow You Away: Arke has Garu spells as one line of offense.
  • Light Is Good: Arke uses Light skills as one of her primary methods of offense, and is the Persona of a fairly nice (if not quiet) person.
  • Shrinking Violet: A very shy and introverted individual.
  • Talking to Themself: Yasue tends to have a lot of internal narration when interacting with others, usually fueled by her anxiety.

    Year 2 Students

Hiraku Mori

Arcana: XIII - Death
Persona: Eurydice
Played by: Super Dog Coin

"I just needed reference photos for a painting that I’ve been planning. I’m sure the school would frown upon me trying to turn in some of my works."

A fairly polite student with some slight eccentricities and an interest in art. Hikaru is an intelligent individual who's generally rather introverted, but has an odd obsession with death to the point where his knowledge of it can be offputting to most. Despite his quirks, he is generally helpful, but is often marked as a strange person due to his bizarre focuses.

  • Irony: Both of Eurydice's elements that she uses for combat are ones that she is weak to (darkness and ice).
  • Mad Artist: Downplayed. Hiraku's not a bad person by any means, but he does have an odd fascination with death and uses it as the primary subject for his artistic endeavors.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He dresses very formally and has the polite personality to match.
  • Stalker without a Crush: He has a very distinct fascination with Aimicchi, but it doesn't seem romantic.
  • The Stoic: He's a generally cool-headed person. He reacts to his awakening in a very calm manner - and when there are voices in his head, he literally just rolls with it.

Kameko Akibara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kameko.png
Arcana: XVII - The Star
Persona: Gamayun
Played by: Shademaster

"I'm always here to help!"

The Student Council secretary at Taiyoutono High School. Kameko is a very intelligent and studious young lady who loves learning more about the world and always has a smile on her face. While she can be a bit reckless and carefree, and is also a bit of a pushover at times, she's charismatic and is always willing to lend a helping hand to those willing to talk to her.

  • The Ace: Kameko's a remarkably skilled and intelligent individual.
  • All-Loving Hero: Kind and understanding to just about everyone, even Ren.
  • Badass Bookworm: A smart student who can hold her own in a Persona fight.
  • Bookworm: She loves books and brings them up in a few threads, usually as a bonding point.
  • Color Motif: Light green.
  • The Cutie: Adorable, friendly, and very likeable.
  • The Generic Guy: Her "gimmick" compared to her roleplayer's other characters is... not having a gimmick. Kameko is just an ordinary student.
  • Genki Girl: Always has a certain perkiness about her.
  • Go-Getter Girl: She always strives to be the best she can be.
  • Green Thumb: While she doesn't have plant-based powers, her mask is tree themed.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite being normally friendly and fun to be around, Kameko can be surprisingly anxious and neurotic, especially when it comes to matters she considers important. She nearly has a panic attack over losing her secretary notes for Student Council. Plus, see Stepford Smiler down below.
  • Nice Girl: Sweet, energetic, and friendly.
  • Only Sane Woman: A running joke is that she's Shademaster's only "normal" character. Generally she plays this to the people she interacts with as well.
  • Plucky Girl: Even in grim situations, she tries to stay positive. This includes during her awakening.
  • Red Mage: She uses half offensive skills and half support skills.
  • Robot Buddy: Kameko's Persona, Gamayun, takes the form of a robot bird.
  • The Smart Girl: She's very intelligent, even having a position on Student Council.
  • Stepford Smiler:
    • Normally downplayed, but when she feels hurt or insulted, she tends to just laugh it off a bit awkwardly before trying to push on as if nothing happened. Her cheer is genuine, though.
    • This is becoming stronger as things go on; in conversations with Ren she reveals that the Persona stuff is slowly wearing her down.
  • The Tease: A fairly flirty person at heart.

Manabu Kamachi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/manabu_new.png
Arcana: XVIII - The Moon
Persona: Cyaegha, Kuranes
Played by: FirebreathFishslap

Manabu is the one and only member of the Occult Club at Taiyoutono, a club dedicated to seeking out the strange, mystical things in everyday life. At the start of the story, he was well known for being a stalker and was rumored to have followed several girls home and around school.

Due to the murmurings of his Persona, Manabu began to suffer from noticeable Sanity Slippage, ending in an attempt to live in the Ruins and the loss of one of his eyes. After being saved from imminent death, Manabu began to make attempts to improve himself, eventually ascending into Kuranes. Since then, he's been a consistent ally to the Persona community, working as a Bedlam administrator and leading several efforts to understand the Ruins better.

  • Abusive Parents: Manabu's parents got divorced when he was in middle school, leaving him to live with his alcoholic father. Since then, he's been regularly beaten for the slightest infractions, including at least one attempted strangling and Manabu being shoved into a glass case when he was younger, which then shattered and left scars across his back.
  • Characterization Marches On: Manabu pre-reboot and Manabu post-reboot may as well be two completely different characters, as several defining events to his character did not happen post-reboot.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Constantly. It's one of his more notable physical characteristics.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Twice — first, after he's kicked out of his home and runs away to the Ruins, and second, after his father commits suicide.
  • Doesn't Like Guns: Gets jumpy around guns, likely due to the fact that his father was a cop.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: He's usually drawn with these, though there's been rare exceptions.
  • Eye Scream: Lost one of his eyes during a psychotic break that drove him into the Ruins. He's since replaced it with a prosthetic.
  • Freudian Excuse: Manabu was constantly abused by his parents (and still is abused by his father, now that his parents have divorced) as a child, and frequently bullied in grade school for his froglike appearance, leading to his extreme self-esteem issues and cowardice, which in turn led to all of his problems with his Persona.
  • Gonk: His slightly out of proportion features, plus the large shadows under his eyes and the large grin give him a frog-like look.
  • In-Series Nickname: If someone doesn't know Manabu's name, then they certainly know his nickname, Frogface. He's not very fond of it, though.
  • Kill the God: Intends to do this to the Butterfly.
  • Meaningful Name: "Manabu" means "study; learn", which is certainly something he spends a lot of time doing, particularly in regards to other people in his school. "Kamachi" uses the kanji for bullrushes and ponds. In short, he's a smart frog.
  • Sanity Slippage: After awakening to Cyaegha. Eventually got better.

Nana Samurakami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nora_izanami_finished.png
Arcana: XIII - Death
Persona: Izanami
Played by: FirebreathFishslap

Nana is an infamous former sukeban, and student of Taiyoutono. Once one of the most feared delinquents in the school, she went straight after her father was killed in a car accident. After receiving her Persona, she starts acting as a mentor to Ryuunosuke.

After the Park Incident, Nana returned to her own gang to find the culprits. Shortly after her return, however, her ex-girlfriend was killed in the Ruins, and shortly after that, an old friend of hers disappeared from the city, sending Nana into a deep depression.

During January of 2014, Nana was found in a coma in the Ruins, with her sword gone and covered in blood. In truth, she had discovered that her old friend had died in the Ruins and reanimated as a monstrous Shadow, and she intended to give him a mercy kill... only for him to defeat her instead. Though her life was saved, she spent several months in that coma. Though she has since woken up, she intends to finish the job that she started once more, no matter how painful it is to do...

Her Persona is Izanami of the Death Arcana.

  • Big Sister Mentor: Takes it upon herself to be this for Ryuunosuke.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Formerly, anyways. She's still known as both "Wooden Sword" Nana and Lady Banchou among delinquent circles.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Sincerely believes this, but lacks the funds to actually buy one, which leads to...
  • Killed Off for Real: Famously pre-reboot, when she and Aleksandria dueled in the Ruins.
  • Otaku: Self admitted Samurai Otaku, though it may be more accurate to describe her as a samurai wannabe.
  • The Idiot from Osaka: Tends to come off as this to her classmates, due to her insistence on using a Kansai dialect despite living in Nagashima.
  • The Lad-ette: Well known for her masculine demeanor, hobbies, and predilection toward very physical combat. Recent events have caused her to have to calm down a bit, since she can't really fight people as much now that she needs a cane.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Has strong tendencies toward this. Pre-reboot, it was what led her to create her proto-yakuza group to control Nagashima's inner city.

    Year 3 Students

Kuzuki Harada

Arcana: IV - The Emperor
Persona: Grani
Played by: Icarael

A young man who strives to be the best at whatever he sets his mind to, Kuzuki transferred to Taiyoutono a year after his father's death. Two years later, he's part of the kendo team and the Student Council. There's a reason why he's an overachiever: it's all a way of earning his late father's love and approval by trying to live up to the expectations he thinks his father had for him... and to guard against painful feelings of emptiness and worthlessness.

  • Academic Athlete: He's got good grades in school and a spot on Taiyoutono's kendo team.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Kuzuki speaks in an archaic and flowery way with sparing use of contractions. This is meant to emulate the speech patterns of keigo and to characterize him as polite, if somewhat rigid.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: While Kuzuki's moral compass works fine, his standards for what counts as "evil" are too stringent and he firmly believes that Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse to the point where he has problems sympathizing with "bad" people.
  • Broken Ace: Kuzuki is a law-abiding citizen, a model student, an active participant in the kendo team and the Student Council... and a young man struggling with feelings of emptiness, self-hatred, and profoundly disordered thinking.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: A downplayed example in that Kuzuki can talk to women just fine.. as long as it's within the bounds of friendship, family, or business. When he gets complimented or hit on, he becomes a tongue-tied, awkward mess.
  • Characterization Marches On: With the removal of the "Russians" Story Arc and the toning-down of the Ruwashi Park Incident, much of Kuzuki's character arc pre-reboot was removed. As a result, he never went down the darker path he did and stays a lot friendlier.
  • Character Tics: Kuzuki grinds his teeth when angered or stressed.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father, a policeman, died while trying to arrest a spree killer.
  • Elemental Powers:
    • Shock and Awe: Grani's main elemental specialty lies in the Zio (electric) branch of magic.
    • Light 'em Up: Grani's second elemental specialty.
  • The Finicky One: Kuzuki has a well-earned reputation for being stuck-up, stodgy, and humorless. One character even thinks of him as "the more no-fun Harada".
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Kuzuki's speech patterns are meant to show how polite and formal he is, which translates to the use of keigo. Since the RP is in English, however, this is shown by having him use "(surname)-san" for most people, including his friends, as well as having him use Antiquated Linguistics.
  • Jack of All Trades: Grani has physical and magical attack skills, buffs, and anti-status-effect spells; allowing him to have a skill for any situation.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: One of the few in Taiyoutono before he, too, got sucked into the Ruins.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: Grani is an armored robotic centaur spirit.
  • Pillars of Moral Character: Much of Kuzuki's character is defined by the concept of giri. As Grani told him upon his awakening, he has a task to use his powers to defend Nagashima— and it is something he cannot simply refuse. Kuzuki is also driven by a sense of on, in the sense that since he has been given great power, he must exercise responsibility in its use by wielding the power of Persona to benefit society and rein in those who go against it.
  • Resigned to the Call: Kuzuki still doesn't know why he of all people was "chosen". He fights on anyway, because he believes it's what's right.
  • Sadly Mythcharacterized: Grani was not a centaur in the original Völsunga saga. That detail was invented by the RPer for Rule of Cool-related reasons.
  • Status Buff: Grani has all of the -kaja spells with the exception of Rakukaja (Defense buff). Instead, he has Safeguard, which buffs his own defense and forces him to take attacks for one ally.
  • Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World: Deconstructed, as Kuzuki's attempts to be a part-time hero alienate him from his family and leaves him little time for socialization.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Kuzuki's relentless drive to please his father is his most obvious motivation for becoming The Ace. The only problem with this is that his father is dead, which has left him without a purpose in life.

Isoroku Mayoi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cropped_isoroku.jpg
Arcana: II - The Priestess
Persona: Gretchen
Played by: Prince Arjuna

Isoroku Mayoi is a third-year student of Taiyoutono High School who's well-known for being a part-time model, though prior to her awakening as a Persona-user, she was a shy, withdrawn girl. A lot of things happened in a few months after her awakening, though most of those events were never specified due to the reboot.

Isoroku's Persona is Gretchen of the Priestess Arcana. She is a relatively experienced Persona-user, though she seems to prefer staying at the sideline rather than getting herself involved in the current events that have been happening in Nagashima. Though that seems to be changing these days.

  • Blow You Away: Specializes in wind, or Garu skills. She uses it as a means to attack and to give herself a little boost while moving.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Isoroku's hair is pretty short, though she's still pretty girly. She used to have long hair when she first got her Persona, though.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Isoroku prefers to not get too involved in most big events happening in Nagashima, due to her wanting to live a normal life.
  • Charm Person: Knows Marin Karin where she can charm Shadows or other people to do her bidding, though she rarely uses it due to it being a Useless Useful Spell.
  • Cool Sword: Has a sword that she dubs Nekosword, a shortsword with a cat's head pommel and is quite brightly-colored. It has no special properties other than being adorable.
  • Extreme Doormat: She's a little bit of a pushover, and she is easy to overwhelm, especially by those with strong or willful personalities. A leftover of her old self when she was still a withdrawn girl.
  • Fragile Speedster: She usually wears light clothing that allows great mobility in exchange of defense. While she's pretty quick on her feet, she's not too good at taking hits.
  • Healing Hands: Capable of using Dia to heal wounds.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: While she doesn't have problem with her power as a Persona-user, Isoroku prefers living a normal life. This makes her hesitant to involve herself in the big events that have been occurring in Nagashima, giving her a case of Bystander Syndrome and Refusal of the Call.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Being a model, she definitely doesn't mind showing herself off. She's also noted for having quite a nice-looking figure.
  • Nice Girl: Isoroku means well and is polite towards others.
  • Pink Means Feminine: While her picture above doesn't show her wearing anything pink, most of her artworks feature her wearing pink. Also, her dialogue speeches are colored pink.
  • Refusal of the Call: Downplayed. While she's willing to enter the ruins to rescue people who are spirited away by the Butterfly, she is not interested in assisting those who are currently dealing with the current events happening in Nagashima. Also a case of Bystander Syndrome.

Kaede Susaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaede_will_fight_you_clean.png
Arcana: X - Wheel of Fortune
Persona: Skuld, Skadi
Played by: FirebreathFishslap

Kaede Susaki is a sailor-mouthed, asocial artist who is best known for causing problems among the student populace, being an all-around Jerkass, and also for formerly leading a large group of Persona users in Nagashima. She prefers to dress androgynously and is often mistaken as a man as a result.

Though Kaede initially scoffed at the Butterfly rumors, she eventually found herself caught up in them during the early days of the site, and reluctantly took on the responsibility of leading the Persona-users in those early days. However, the strain of the role and the things that she could not control took their toll on her, and after the Park Incident, she stepped down from her role and left the community for a time.

After awakening to her future sight abilities, Kaede returned to the community, though no longer in a leadership position.

  • Berserk Button: Kaede has a whole keyboard's worth.
  • Bifauxnen: Well known for her masculine demeanor and appearance.
  • Blow You Away: Initially specialized in wind skills. After ascending, she became An Ice Person
  • Expy: of Naoto in appearance only.
  • Healing Hands: One of her Persona's other main abilities.
  • Refusal of the Call: She didn't initially plan on returning to the Ruins. It was only after it became clear that some Persona users were going to misuse their abilities that she did so.
  • Seers: Developed future sight abilities a few months after gaining her Persona. A trip to the Inverted World gone wrong revealed that they have something to do with whatever's in the sky there.

Makoto Nakagawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rwx3koe_5.png
Arcana: IV - The Emperor
Persona: Remus, Brutus
Played by: FirebreathFishslap

The other member of a set of identical twins, Makoto is casual about life and love. He and his brother are orphans and moved through foster homes for years before finally being adopted by the wealthy Nakagawa family to serve as their heirs.

He's a bit of a charmer and popular with Taiyoutono's female students, and, like his brother, used to be a member of the Student Council. His only goal in life is to live comfortably — the way he sees it, the hardest parts of his life are now over, so he just needs to maintain his quiet life. However, beneath this all is a deep resentment — despite all of the success he's had in his life, he feels like no one takes him seriously. Because of this, he has a tendency toward anti-social and downright sociopathic behavior.

  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Yu's Abel.
  • Curtains Match the Window: His eyes and hair are both grey.
  • Freudian Excuse: Grew up in the foster system and wasn't adopted until he was well within his teenage years. His cheery mask developed as a way to try and endear others toward him.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: His outward personality is the complete opposite of Yu's, being rather warm and friendly, whereas Yu is cold and unconforming. When their true selves come though, though, they tend to match up more than you'd think.
  • Twin Switch: Does this frequently with Yu.

Yu Nakagawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yu_new_ref.png
Arcana: IV - The Emperor
Played by: FirebreathFishslap

One member of a set of identical twins, Yu is an uptight enforcer of school rules and a former member of the Student Council. He and his brother are orphans and moved through foster homes for years before finally being adopted by the wealthy Nakagawa family to serve as their heirs. Though Yu is content with the role that his family has set out for him, stressors in his life nonetheless serve to complicate his quiet life.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Does whatever he can to protect and help Makoto. However, this tendency of his is why Makoto's so irritated with him — he doesn't want to be under his brother's leash anymore.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Makoto's Cain.
  • Curtains Match the Window: His eyes and hair are both grey.
  • Freudian Excuse: Grew up in the foster system and wasn't adopted until he was well within his teenage years. His aloof personality developed as a way to keep from being thrown away by whatever family took him in.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Considered a complete douchebag by just about everyone, but genuinely cares for his brother and tends to soften up a bit when around Miyuki and Seiji (who are probably his only friends).
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: His outward personality is the complete opposite of Makoto's, being rather cold and unconforming, whereas Makoto is warm and friendly. When their true selves come though, though, they tend to match up more than you'd think.
  • Twin Switch: Does this frequently with Makoto.

Yuuma Tokunaga

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuuma_3.png
Arcana: XV - The Devil
Persona: The Red Death
Played by: Shademaster

"Human minds are twisted, you know... everyone acts pleasant, but more often than not, they hide some of the most vile things underneath their day-to-day facades."

A refined gentleman who has an air of intelligence about him. Yuuma initially seems like an average guy and has a very polite demeanor, but in reality he hides a twisted mind and a fascination with the darker sides of humanity. Despite this, he's not really that bad, as none of his actions are done with malice - and he is ultimately on the side of the Persona users, despite his odd hobbies and creepiness.

  • Bedsheet Ghost: Red Death is a dark take on this - the bedsheet is a funeral shroud.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite his creepiness, Yuuma's actually a fairly pleasant and normal person to be around. It's telling when his response to Touma disappearing is asking where he went in the most Tranquil Fury tone possible.
  • Casting a Shadow: Red Death has access to the Curse element.
  • Color Motif: Crimson/red.
  • The Comically Serious: Tends to invoke this by being almost stubbornly polite. He's also a fan of Featherman, only adding to this.
  • Creepy Good: Disturbing? Yes. Bad? Far from it.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite having a macabre aesthetic and a Persona with access to Curse spells, Yuuma is unfailingly polite and is working with the Persona community as best he can.
  • Demoted to Extra: Shademaster has dropped him in favor of a different character due to dissatisfaction with him as a whole. He still exists in the universe, but serves primarily as an NPC now.
  • Fanboy: Amusingly, yes. He's met not one, not two, but three people that sent him into fanboy mode... and he still makes an attempt to maintain dignity.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: He's very polite and intelligent, horror shtick aside.
  • Hidden Depths: He's stated in a Bedlam thread that he'd like to try creative writing. Given how this is Yuuma, this could turn out... interestingly.
  • Humans Are Bastards: His whole thing is that he believes humans are naturally twisted people at heart. Unlike most examples, however, he sees this as a good thing, believing that each person's vices make them unique.
  • Intrigued by Humanity: He's fascinated by the darker sides of other people.
  • Mind over Matter: Red Death has Psi as one of its attacking moves.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: He makes no attempt to hide his interest in horror material and the twisted nature of humanity.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He's a very smart dresser.
  • Stoic Spectacles: He's cool as a cucumber and wears glasses.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He's become a lot nicer ever since he awakened; before he used to be outright Affably Evil, but now he's firmly good, if not creepy about it. Part of this is because his roleplayer wasn't satisfied with his original personality and decided to ease him up a bit to make him more comfortable to write.
  • Troll: A bit. He carries around the headphones that Touma tried to steal specifically so he can rub it in Touma's face when they meet up again.

Naoko Shimada

Arcana: VI - The Lovers
Persona: Circe
Played by: Espi

"Not to mention, what kind of woman wants to be seen in a black veil like this?"

Naoko teaches literature to third year students at Taiyoutono, as well as being the homeroom teacher for class 3-2. Born to a wealthy businessman, Naoko’s life was carefully planned out for her by her parents to ensure she meet their traditional views of a ‘proper’ daughter and wife. When her husband died suddenly, she was forced to finally start making her own decisions and becoming her own person, starting by becoming a teacher.

  • Badass Teacher: She can hold her own in a fight, at least with her Persona. And if someone hurts one of the high schoolers, even if she’s not their teacher, she will make them regret it.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Her Persona specializes in Darkness skills, but Naoko is anything but cruel or malicious.
  • Extreme Doormat: Naoko has been this for most of her life, and even now her demure nature keeps her from being too assertive.
  • Happily Married: Or, at least, she was...
  • Lady of Black Magic: Has an affinity for powerful offensive spells and conducts herself with dignity even in combat.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Naoko was raised to become this and indeed, that’s what she was, at least until her husband died. It defined her so much that she is struggling to find a new identity.
