The Reim Empire

The Reim Empire, fashioned after the Roman Empire, is the world's largest nation protected by the Great Priestess Scheherazade. The empire is the most powerful and longest leading superpower in terms of military, technology, and economy in the world. Reim's most important cities are Remano, the seat of power and capital city, and Napolia, the empire's largest financial and world economic and trading center.

     General
  • Badass Army: The Reim army is described as being one of the most capable in the world, with them not only having access to powerful Djinn users, but also having black powder. Of particular note is the Fanalis Corps, which (as the name indicates) consists entirely of Fanalis, who can level entire regiments on their own.
  • The Empire: They are described as the most powerful state in the world, and are feared by many of the other nations, save for perhaps Kou. That being said, it's later indicated that though it calls itself "Empire", it's actually a republic, with the Senate having most of the authority, and the position of Emperor being a ceremonial, elective position.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Based on the Roman Empire, between their large, and well ordered military, as well their advanced civil society. Interestingly, their name bares a resemblance to that of Remus, the brother of Romulus (who Rome is named for).
  • Gladiator Games: Reim makes active use of this, with Alibaba trying to join up with the games (without fully realizing what they entail).
    • Later on, though, the practice is ceased, and the Reim arena is repurposed to hold less dangerous forms of entertainment.
  • Humans Are Special: They style themselves as a nation built chiefly on human ingenuity and spirit. Indeed, they only start relying on magic when it becomes really necessary.
  • Magic Versus Science: In contrast to empires like Kou, the Reim focus less on spamming powerful magic, and more in scientific advancement, becoming the first country to harness black powder, which they use to great effect against Magnostadt. However, that's not to say they don't have access to magic, which they do, and can use if the situation calls for it.

    Scheherazade
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Magi-15_8347.jpg

The Magi of the Reim Empire. She is responsible for its continued prosperity, and is well over 200-years-old.

Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese), Stephanie Sheh (English)

  • Barrier Maiden: Protected her whole naval army and a large part of Magnostadt from the black Djinns with her bolg. Unfortunately, she was defeated by the Medium.
  • Braids of Action: Like the other three Magi.
  • Clone Degeneration: All her clones have a youthful appearance, but die after more or less 10 years after their "birth".
  • Costume Porn: Has leaves and berries in her hair in an arrangement in the style of the Romans.
  • Court Mage: The High Priestess of the Reim Empire.
  • Dramatic Ellipsis: Always speaks... this... way...except when giving orders to the army.
  • Ethereal White Dress: She's a Magi who has lived for over 200 years. To let everyone know she's magical, her attire consists of a long white robe that looks similar to a stola.
  • Expendable Clone: She's implied to kill off her clones when they get too old to keep up the appearance of eternal youth. Subverted since it's later revealed to be a case of Clone Degeneration.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Subverted since once in a while she open them when she wants to put emphasis on something or things start going horrible wrong.
  • Friend to Bugs: Word of God revealed that she likes bugs.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She is a benevolent ruler towards Reim, with a naturally kind disposition to those that she meets, but she still bears the responsibility of ruling a country, which requires a fair bit of ruthlessness. She will take any chance she gets to expand her empire, regardless of how ruthless the methods. She'll send spies to look for other countries' weaknesses in peacetime, and create clones of herself to keep an iron-fisted grip on control of Reim.
  • The Good Queen: Played with slightly, in that while she's not the literal ruler of Reim, she does exercise great authority and influence over matters of state, and deeply cares about all of Reim's citizens.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She really is a good person, even if she is a bit heavy handed and doesn't have a lot of patience.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Her current clone releases all the Magoi in her body to give it to the exhausted Alibaba and Kou royals.
    • She pulls another one in the Sacred Palace after her death. As the moment of her reincarnation approaches, Uugo asks her if she's sure she wants Titus to return in her place, and she tells him she is. Titus is then resurrected as the new Magi of Reim.
  • Hero of Another Story: Apparently, she had a similar relationship and adventures with the first king of Reim, to what Aladdin and Alibaba have now.
  • Humans Are Special: She knows that humans, with hard work and faith in themselves, can do incredible things; they make mistakes and stray from the right path sometimes, but if they're brave enough they can learn from their mistakes and can continue living. That's why, even though she's a Magi, she never uses her magic in Reim's wars, instead just supporting, motivating and having faith in her people, since she knows that Reim must stand on its own feet. However, in her talk with Aladdin and Titus, she realizes her errors and that she shouldn't have turned a blind eye to the Empire's more dubious actions such as slavery, regardless of her own desire for Reim to stand on its own.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: After how long she's been around, she's very stern and cool-headed. Though given what we see in flashbacks of her youth it's obvious that she started with Innocent Blue Eyes.
  • Iron Lady: She's stoic and cool-headed, and ready to do anything in order to the protect the Reim Empire.
  • Lady and Knight: The Lady to Muu's Knight.
  • Like a Son to Me: Even though she didn't give birth to him, she considers Titus to be her son. And it saddens her at not being able to prolong his lifespan.
  • Magic Staff: An ornate, crescent moon staff taller than she is.
  • Mama Bear:
    • She views all of Reim as her protectorate, thinking of it as her own child. And she will protect the Reim Empire, at all costs.
    • She's furious when she realized that Al-Thamen's father turned Titus' sacrifice into a food source for itself.
  • Meaningful Name: The character Scheherazade from "1001 nights" prolonged her death by execution by telling her king a (unconcluded) story every night. This Scheherazade prolongs her imminent demise by clones of herself that need to be replaced every decade.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Her love for Reim turned her delusional, seeing the country as her only priority. She forsook the whole world and turned a blind eye to its innocent foreign slaves.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By forcing Magnostadt to try to fight against the Kou Empire, Magnostadt wages war on Reim instead.
    • Her apparently disregard for her clone's (Titus) new-found love for life and demanding Titus' return to her causes Titus to rebel by siding with Magnostadt, and also earning the ire of the school's founder and country's leader Mogamett, who protects all his students (Titus included), with extraordinary zeal.
  • Not So Stoic: She lost her cool after seeing Mogamett's mechas kill many of Reim's soldiers with a energy blast.
  • Overprotective Mom: In an extra, Titus tells her that Aladdin promised to take him and Sphintus to a brothel. She ends up shouting at Aladdin to not take Titus to those "strange places".
  • The Paragon: Her philosophy regarding normal humans is that they should learn to support themselves and one another instead of relying on magic, which directly contrasts with that of Mogamett.
  • Pet the Dog: She does care for Titus in her own way.
    • The reason why she does not want Reim to rely on magic or metal vessels, is because she wants them to be able to stand on their own.
    • She ended the war between Reim and Magnostadt after a chat with Aladdin, and allowed Titus to spend his last month of life with his friends.
  • Psychic Link: With Titus, which allows her to take control of his body for a short time.
  • Purely Aesthetic Gender: A special chapter has her say that Magi don't really consider themselves to be male or female. She is rather shocked when Titus tells her about Aladdin's love of women.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She has been supporting the Reim Empire for over 200 years, but still has the appearance of a young girl. It later turns out that her body is actually a clone like Titus, and that her real body is so ancient that it can no longer move on its own.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female Magi of this era.
  • The Stoic: The solemn expression in her face rarely changes.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's not as coldhearted as she seems and she really does care about Titus like he was her son, but she's really bad at expressing how she really feels.
  • Supporting Leader: Leads Reim's army from far away, but nothing else beyond that, as she doesn't want them to always rely on her but rather use their own strength.
  • Technical Pacifist
  • Token Mini-Moe
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist
  • When She Smiles: It's a sight to behold!
  • White Mage: She doesn't seem to have very much offensive magic, but her bolg is second to none.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: The real Scheherazade will die in a month at best, meaning all her clones will die alongside with her as they were made out of her Rukh.
  • You Remind Me of X: Aladdin and Alibaba remind her of herself, and her first king from long ago.

King Candidates

    Muu Alexius
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Mu_7275.png

A half-blood Fanalis and leader of the Reim Empire's Fanalis Army Corps. He is also one of Reim's three Dungeon Capturers, having captured the 8th Dungeon, Barbatos, the Djinn of Hunting and Nobility. He is a descendant of Scheherazade's first king, Pernadius Alexius.

Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano (Japanese), Ben Pronsky (English)

  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: A Dungeon Capturer and the strongest of the Fanalis Army Corps.
    • His forte isn't actually sheer strength because, as a half-blood, he's physically weaker than most of his own Corps. What makes him the strongest is that he has a metal vessel.
  • Barbarian Longhair
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Though he's really nice to everyone by default, if you threaten Scheherazade or Reim in any way, look out.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Just like his sister seems to be set to become Morgiana's Cool Big Sis, Muu seems to be falling into this position in his relationship with the young Fanalis. Muu is not only the one that tells Morgiana about their homeland, specifically saying that he should have told her before; but that the fact that he didn't tell her, was because he was worried about her reaction once she learned the truth.
  • Blue Blood: He is part of one of Reim's noble families.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Has one on Scheherazade.
  • Brother–Sister Team: With Myron.
  • The Captain: Of the Fanalis Army Corps.
  • The Champion: Wants to be Scheherazade's. And now, after her death he kinda is. He'll now continue protecting Reim from ever getting into the hands of other countries.
  • Cool Sword: It's his metal vessel.
  • Curtains Match the Windows
  • Death Glare: When you see Muu's face with one of this instead of his happy-go-lucky smile, you know he's being serious. Scheherazade prefers his smile.
  • Explosive Overclocking: Because of his low magoi he's unable to use his Djinn Equip for more than a couple of minutes without getting completely drained but his speed and strength are enough to destroy a city.
  • Famous Ancestor: He inherited the blood from the first King candidate Scheherazade chose, Pernadius Alexius. Meaning that at some point his family was the ruling family of Reim.
  • Half-Human Hybrid
  • The Heart: To the Fanalis Army Corps.
  • Heroic Build
  • Hunk
  • Kick the Dog: Gives a Breaking Speech to Titus about him being an aberration that, if it weren't for Scheherazade, wouldn't have existed in the first place, and how he has lost his path as Scheherazade's pawn for thinking that he had worth as a unique person.
  • The Kirk: As part of a Freudian Trio with Myron and Lo'lo. He always has to get involved in their fights and try to make them get along.
  • Lady and Knight: Knight to Scheherazade's Lady.
  • Likes Older Women: According to the Magi Illustrated Encyclopedia" his type are older women''...
  • Master Swordsman
  • Nice Guy
  • Perpetual Smiler: Almost always has a friendly and good natured smile on his face.
  • Pet the Dog: Oddly enough just before his Break Them by Talking speech, when a desperate Titus tells Muu that he has made friends that he cherishes, Muu genuinely congratulates the other boy for this with his normal friendliness in the middle of battle. And later looks pretty solemn after seeing Titus' Heroic BSoD reaction from hearing this, clearly taking absolutely no pleasure in stating such things. Taking into account what we later find out about the Fanalis' real form, it does seem that Muu and the Fanalis may feel sympathetic towards Titus, since they aren't really humans.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: He is who reveals to Morgiana the truth behind the Fanalis' homeland, that is the fact that their real form is not a humanoid one. They are actually Red Lions, a powerful species from Alma Torran.
  • Status Buff: His Djinn's strength magic gives him and his corps a boost in strength and speed. Considering how strong and fast the Fanalis were to begin with...
  • Undying Loyalty: To Scheherazade. Word of God said that it was his fate since he was born, as he is a descendant of Pernadius, Scheherazade's first king.
  • White Sheep: Of all of the Fanalis we've seen so far, he's the only one with the disposition and magoi of a king candidate, albeit he's not a pureblood Fanalis. This is all the more obvious by the way he's attracted the Fanalis Corps, who are loyal only to him.

    Nerva Julius Caluades
Son of the Reim Emperor and conqueror of the 44th dungeon, Shax.

Voiced by: Hiroki Matsukawa

    Ignatius Alexius
Supreme Commander of the Reim Empire's army and conqueror of the 20th dungeon, Purson. He is a descendant of Scheherazade's first king, Pernadius Alexius.

Voiced by: Kanehira Yamamoto

  • Feminine Women Can Cook: In one Omake, Alibaba founds that Toto is actually good wife material after tasting her food; well, except for the whole burly violent girl thing.

  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Specially if it has a layer of magoi to be extra strong.
  • Luminescent Blush: Her bright red stoic face just makes her more endearing.
  • Meaningful Appearance: A thin headband and a ribbon that holds part of her hair. All the Yambala Gladiators have it on their left side.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Toto ends up becoming Alibaba's closest companion during his training at the Reim Colesseum and the story, for the briefest of moments teases the idea of her becoming his new Love Interest. That gets squashed really quick and she ironically latter becomes a couple with Olba, with a major bonding point between them being their mutual admiration of Alibaba.
  • Official Couple: With Olba.
  • One Head Taller: Than Olba.
  • Playing with Fire: Amol Ahmor-Ghameq (Deep Crimson Clawed Wings).
  • Ship Tease: With Alibaba after his fight with Garda. Alibaba started to feel and behave a little like Cassim after his Rukh fused with Alibaba's; Cassim was of the type of men Toto likes, so she of course felt attracted for a second... until Alibaba returned to his normal self.
