    Kazuki Shikimori

Kazuki Shikimori

Voiced by: Daisuke Sakaguchi (Japanese), Blake Shepard (English)

  • Accidental Pervert: In one hilarious incident, he accidentally walks into a room where Yuna is changing. While he quickly steps out, he realizes shortly afterwards that she was changing in his room.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Kuriko tells Kazuki he does this too much in one episode, and his response is to apologize.
  • Back from the Dead: The point of the second half.
  • Balanced Harem: For the most part. None of them have a significant lead over the other girls.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: As a young child Kazuki used two of his spells to create snowfall on a summer day to impress both Yuna and Chihaya after both of them separately promise to marry him if he could. He would not remember either of those promises by the time he made it to Aoi Academy despite Chihaya being around since childhood. This would actually prove Yuna’s allegations that he was a two timer 100% true.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Lampshaded.
Kazuki: Stop, or I will scream!
    Kuriko: That's a girl's line.
  • Heroic Lineage: At the beginning of his second year it is revealed that he is descended from not only the most powerful of eastern mages, but the most powerful of western mages.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Kazuki sacrifices his last spell and subsequently his life to save Yuuna's.
  • Insecure Love Interest: At various points in the anime, Kazuki has a hard time believing that anyone was actually interested in him for anything other than his overpowered genes but grew out of it after a while. He briefly relapses into this mindset after he uses up all of his available spells and becomes a ghost.
  • Polyamory: Implied at the end of the anime adaptation after Kazuki somehow manages to split himself up into multiple copies. While none of the girls seemed to mind it, Yuna seems to only want one of him, and she wants him to herself.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: He's an early example, being the protagonist of a light novel series with a rather plain appearance who attends a Wizarding School where he's regarded as a loser for having only eight spells while everyone else has thousands, and while he's not very stoic he's still rather introverted and insecure. However, despite having fewer spells than his classmates, they're all very powerful due to being descended from the strongest mages in Japan and Europe, and he ends up gaining a harem of girls who fall in love with him.
  • Wham Episode: Episode 12. Kazuki uses his last spell and turns to ash, although he "survives" as a ghost.
  • You Remind Me of X: Rin lampshades that many of the qualities she sees in Mitsuaki Nanba are also present in Kazuki.

    Yuna Miyama

Yuna Miyama

Voiced by: Hitomi Nabatame (Japanese), Jessica Boone (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/71724.jpg

  • Entitled to Have You: An example of “What They Do”. Yuna often objects to Kazuki being around other women, her excuse being that she’s his wife due to the promise she made to him when they were children. This gets particularly bad in the second half of anime where flanderization hits her character the hardest.
  • Fiery Redhead: Normally she's a very nice girl. But if she sees Kazuki is with another woman, and that will reveal a completely different side of her.
  • First Girl Wins: Unlike the anime ending, where it’s implied that Kazuki would end up in a polyamorous relationship with the members of his harem, the light novel/manga ends with him confessing to Yuna after using a snowfall spell and the two officially starting to date.
  • Flanderization: In the second half of the series, Yuna's more violently possessive traits come to the surface. Any conceivable interaction that Kazuki has with a girl, no matter how minor it might be, is enough to set her off. The result being her calling him a two timer and nuking him with her magic. And when Kazuki was split into 10 identical clones of himself, thus opening up a situation where every girl who liked him can be with him, Yuna is quite literally the only person in the room who wants to find a way to get Kazuki back to normal so he can marry only her.
  • Girlish Pigtails: An odd instance where she has long hair as well as two small pigtails.
  • Gratuitous English: In episode 9, while Kazuki is away on a hot springs trip with Kuriko, Yuna reads a variety of books in an attempt to distract herself. Then she reads an English book, and has an Imagine Spot where she thinks they're doing naughty things.
Yuna: Tom has a girlfriend, her name is Nancy...
Yuna: (gets angry) Kazuki-san has a girlfriend, her name is Kuriko-san.
  • Housewife: Not actually, she more fits the typical "housewife" archetype for a harem series.
  • I Knew It!: An In-Universe example. When she learns that the reason Kazuki’s ashes all went to the girls that they did was because he has strong feelings for all of them, Yuma’s reaction is to sadly mutter to herself that she knew that he was a two timer.
  • Love at First Sight: She fell in love with Kazuki when she first met him as a child.
  • New Transfer Student: Transfers to Aoi Academy to become Kazuki's wife.
  • Nice Girl: Yuna can get along with just about anyone except for people who would do anything to Kazuki.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: More that half of Kazuki's total spell count was used up on either bailing Yuna out of a situation that she herself had caused or for something completely trivial such as making it snow in Summer, which he did twice for Yuna.
  • Prehensile Hair: Yuna and Kuriko engage in a spot of ahoge wrestling. Yuna's also functions as a Kazuki radar.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's a very nice girl with pink hair. She's also the only one who actually cares for Kazuki from the very beginning instead of just being interested in his genes.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She only has eyes on Kazuki since the beginning.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: So much so that she even first introduced herself as "Yuna Shikimori" to the rest of Kazuki's class.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Yuna/Yuuna.
  • Stalker with a Test Tube: Inverted, She's the only one who actually cares for Kazuki from the very beginning instead of just being interested in his genes.
  • True Love's Kiss: Her kiss was the one to bring him back to his human form.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: After learning that Nakamaru had less than pure motives for checking up on Kazuki in the nurse's office, she beats him up a little bit when he's caught spying on Kazuki again.

    Kuriko Kazetsubaki

Kuriko Kazetsubaki

Voiced by: Yuki Matsuoka (Japanese), Tiffany Grant (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/217099.jpg

  • All for Nothing: Episode 6. All that fuss she went through to impress Kazuki's parents? Yeah... turns out they wont be coming.
  • Alliterative Name: Kuriko Kazetsubaki
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Averted in episode 19 when you see nipples on Kuriko and Yamase.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The blonde.
  • Clothing Damage: In one episode, a summoned monster manages to claw through Kuriko's blouse and bra without scratching her skin.
  • Entitled to Have You: More of a "Who they are" instance. Initially, she only wants Kazuki's genes, so she seems quite content with using her body, charm, or her family's resources to seduce Kazuki.
  • Gold Digger: At the beginning of the story, Kuriko's only interest in Kazuki is to obtain his genes for the wealthy and influential Kazetsubaki family and the stature that goes with being the mother of a powerful sorcerer.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Basically everything about her appearance and mannerisms are tailor made to make her appear as alluring and sexy as possible.
  • Prehensile Hair: Yuna and Kuriko engage in a spot of ahoge wrestling. Yuna's also functions as a Kazuki radar.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Inverted. The ghost "child" Elizabeth takes Kuriko as a replacement mother.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Often she will appear out of nowhere into Kazuki's arms or lap right in front of Yuna.
  • Student Council President: She's a member of the student government.
  • The Tease: She's actually into Kazuki, but she enjoys being a shameless flirt with him too. Usually it's to tease Yuna.
  • The Vamp: At first, she tries to seduce Kazuki simply for his genes. She grows out of it later though.
  • You Remind Me of X: When Elizabeth sees Kuriko, who resembles Elizabeth's mother, lift up a helmet, it reminded her of a knight that guarded her and Elizabeth adopts Kuriko as her new mother.
  • What You Are in the Dark: In episode 8, Kuriko had the best opportunity to sleep with Kazuki without any interruptions from the other girls or resistance from Kazuki himself. But she stopped before she got anywhere because she didn't want to take advantage of Kazuki due to her genuine feelings for him, which likely wouldn't have happened at the beginning of the series.

    Rin Kamishiro

Rin Kamishiro

Voiced by: Yuka Inokuchi (Japanese), Kim Prause (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/42247.jpg

  • Hidden Buxom: When she’s dressed in her kimono, her breasts are compressed to the point of her looking flat chested as pointed out by Kuriko. Without her chest bindings, they are quite substantial for a girl her size.
  • Hime Cut: Level bangs, very short sidelocks, and long hair in the back.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: She wields a katana.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: To further sell her Yamato Nadeshiko personality, she almost always wears traditional Japanese clothing; it's very rare for her to wear Aoi Academy's uniform.
  • Lethal Chef: Kazuki is the only one who can eat her horrendous cooking, and is totally honest about it.
  • Magic Knight: She can use both magic and fight with a sword.
  • Meaningful Name: Rin's name is spelled with this kanji 凜, which means "cold, strict, severe". Describes her initially quite well.
  • Memory Wipe Exploitation: In the manga, Rin attempts to do this to Kazuki when he loses his memories by trying to convince him that they were childhood friends and they promised to marry each other.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Initially, she would rather kill Kazuki who in her words, has bad grades, no athletic prowess, and no redeeming values. However, as the story progress, she gradually softens up to Kazuki and even begins to smile after witnessing his kindness and compassion towards others, including herself.
  • Stalker with a Test Tube: Subverted. Unlike Yuna and Kuriko who pursue Kazuki of their own free will, Rin was originally assigned to secure him as a husband by the leaders of the main branch of the Kamishiro family to restore power to their clan with the children Kazuki would conceive with her. She however was not happy with this arrangement after learning of his lack of anything she could consider a redeeming quality, leading her to attempt to kill him on multiple occasions to avoid having to give herself up to him.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Of the three main love interests, Rin is the one who is the coldest towards Kazuki in the beginning but warms up to him after witnessing his kindness to others.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She's a katana wielding, samurai-esque girl.

Supporting characters

    Chihaya Yamase

Chihaya Yamase

Voiced by: Mai Nakahara (Japanese), Luci Christian (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/44935.jpg

  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Averted in episode 19 when you see nipples on Kuriko and Yamase.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Depending on your POV, Yuna and Yamase are both Victorious since Kazuki being split up into clones means they could both have one to themselves. Yuna doesn't like the idea, but Yamase seems happy to have one of him.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: During the short period of time where she was having a disagreement about whether or not they should revive Kazuki as a living person, her magic is amplified to the point where she can fight both Kuriko and Rin, two of the strongest magicians in their school, simultaneously. This is explained by saying that Kazuki’s ashes boosted her magical power.
  • Put on a Bus: She has a tendency to appear, then disappear for a while throughout the series.
  • Temporarily a Villain: Chihaya serves as the final obstacle to bringing Kazuki back to life. This is due to the risk of him losing his memories as a result and she would rather have him as a ghost than let that happen.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Subverted, Yamase is introduced in one episode, then seems to be promptly forgotten. She shows up again in later episodes, and she gets much more screen time and character development.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: He's quite smitten with Kaori, and sometimes comments to her that he has a "special bed" in the nurse's office just for her.
  • Secret-Keeper: He knows how to restore Kazuki's body, although he does not reveal the information to Yuna, Kuriko, or Rin.

    Shino Akai

Shino Akai

Voiced by: Yoshino Takamori (Japanese), Monica Rial (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/42249.jpg

  • The Collector: Shino seems to be a bit too obsessed at trying to capture Kazuki as a ghost.
  • Old School Building: Shino lures Kazuki here when she first attempts to capture him. Yuna destroys it in a fit of jealousy.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Shino shares many traits with her brother. She is a somewhat powerful magician/researcher, eventually becomes a nurse at Aoi Academy, and propositions her respective love interest with the "special bed" that's located in the nurse's office.
  • Ship Tease: It is hinted that she has feelings for Kazuki since her brother had asked her why she kept hesitating to put Kazuki into her collection, even though she could have done so at any time.

    Elizabeth

Elizabeth

Voiced by: Kimiko Koyama (Japanese), Sasha Paysinger (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/54119.jpg

    Karei Hirosaki

Karei Hirosaki

Voiced by: Emi Shinohara (Japanese), Kelly Manison (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/42252.jpg

  • Canon Foreigner: Hirosaki was created specifically for the anime adaptation.
  • Ship Tease: While it’s not as obvious as with the other members of Kazuki’s harem, Karei does have moments where her affection for him can be interpreted as romantic in nature. One of Kazuki's clones starts the epilogue by stopping to have a conversation with her, something that the clones are only shown doing with his other love interests.
  • Widow's Weeds: She is always seen wearing a sexy, black funeral outfit.

    Kaori Iba

Kaori Iba

Voiced by: Junko Noda (Japanese), Christine Auten (English)

  • Gamer Chick: She plays video games a lot. Even during class.
  • Sensei-chan: She's a young, attractive teacher who's also rather apathetic towards her job and would rather play video games than teach.
  • Womanchild: She seems like a student herself, as she rarely if ever truly tries to exercise control over the class of 2-B.

Class 2-B

Yukihiko Nakamaru

Voiced by: Ryou Naitou (Japanese), Chris Ayres (English)

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He is extremely jealous of Kazuki's relationship with Yuna and tries to exploit Kazuki's abilities for his own personal gain.
  • False Friend: He pretends to be Kazuki's best friend, but is really only in it for Yuna.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: In every case, his schemes against Kazuki always backfire, hurting him the most.
  • Heroic Lineage: After Kazuki becomes a ghost, it’s revealed that Nakamaru has a rather impressive magic ancestry himself and he tries to use this to woo Yuna without much success.

Maiho Kurioka

Voiced by: Chiemi Chiba (Japanese), Cynthia Martinez (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/54839.jpg

  • Anti-Magic: She apparently has the power to neutralize magical powers. Because of this, she often tags along with Kazuki in order to keep his magic in check, much to Yuna's irritation.
  • Last Episode, New Character: Maiho shows up right before the anime series ends, declaring to be Kazuki's bride. Yuna is not pleased about that.
