The Luthor Family

    Lex Luthor

Click for Civilian Look

The president of United States of America and is one of the most brilliant men alive. Alexander "Lex" Luthor presents a benevolent public face while using his wealth, intellect, and resources for mysterious reasons.

  • Adaptation Name Change: In E27 Lex's company it's called LuthorCorp instead of LexCorp simply because Word of God thinks the name "LexCorp" is silly. Not many people name their Fortune 500 Companies after their first name.
  • Affably Evil: Luthor tries to present this way, he may actually be fairly reasonable when he's not dealing with Superman. One thing that is often noted is that Lex is actually quite sincere about how he treats his employees, and he has respect for blue-collar people who go beyond their means to get ahead (since he used to be one as well).
  • Alliterative Name: Lex Luthor. He's one of the many L.L. who litters the Superman mythos.
  • And That's Terrible: A nod to The Super Dictionary as the Trope Namer. Lex's juvenile criminal record includes an incident in which he, as a prank, stole a catering van from a convention his father was hosting. Ultimately no one was hurt, except the forty or so sheet cakes which were spilled over a three mile stretch of road when Lex did not secure the back doors properly before stealing the van.
  • Arch-Enemy: Towards Superman, as usual.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Towards Superboy who was created at his instigation from his and Superman's DNA.
  • Bald of Authority: Completely bald and he's both the President of the United States and the chief enemy of Superman. Even his secret service callsign is Cueball.
  • Bald of Evil: Perhaps the iconic example, being Superman's devious arch enemy and lost all of his hair due to exposure to a Kryptonite shower.
  • Benevolent Boss: Luthor may be a tyrannical boss, or a master manager who takes careful care of his underlings' needs.
  • Big Bad: If somebody is screwing with Superman's life, the odds of it being traced back to Luthor stand at somewhere around ninety percent.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: In addition to engaging in a wide variety of unethical business practices, LuthorCorp is deeply involved with the illegal arms trade in Metropolis and beyond.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He made several bunkers around the world, all of which contain weapons and tools (both man made and intergalactic) to combat Superman.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: Lex is the Trope Namer. He's the smartest man in the world, but he wastes his resources on fighting a flying alien in blue spandex because he's angry that there's someone out there that's better than he.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His abusive childhood is just the tip of the iceberg.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Almost half of what he says is snark, and he's never less than 100% deadpan.
  • The Dreaded: By superhero and supervillain alike. Anyone who can go up against Superman and come out even time and again tends to earn the fear and respect of every cape, cowl, and criminal out there.
  • Driven by Envy: Lex was the most beloved figure in Metropolis before Superman arrived, and he will never forgive "the alien" for taking that from him.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: It is quite possible that Lex has some abnormal physiological developments as a result of his exposure to Smallville's meteor shower as a child, which would make him a metahuman.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He deeply cares about his half-sister Luna, his wife Erica Alexandra and his daughter Lena Luthor acting as his own Morality Pets.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: He and Dr. Thaddeus Sivana were lab partners on Ivy University, until both were expelled after a chemical lab fire. Thanks to his father he faced no criminal charges, but Sivana would not be so lucky.
  • Foil: Superman and Luthor stand, respectively, atop the pinnacles of physical and intellectual perfection, have a vast array of powers at their disposal (Superman's innate, Luthor's technological), and understand what it's like to be isolated from society. Yet where Superman tries to use his powers (which are uniquely his) to help the rest of the people around him, Luthor uses his (which are at least partly owed to his workers and the various alien races he's lifted concepts from) to exploit people for his own gain. Throw in the fact that Superman is an alien who nevertheless represents the best of humanity, and Luthor is a human who represents the worst of humanity, and you've got a solid contrast.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards Superman. No matter what Lex does he’ll never be as powerful, as loved, or as good as Superman.
  • Irrational Hatred: His hate for Superman is based on nothing but his own personal prejudices.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Luthor's exposure to Kryptonite allowed him to keep Superman at bay and get away with all sorts of crime, but eventually he learned it had given him fatal cancer.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: In Earth-27, the general population don't know about Lex Luthor's criminal activities, he is regarded as a respected business person, and now the president of the United States; even though Superman and most of the Justice League suspects he has been involved in many evil deeds. He is the financial backer of the Legion of Doom, and a member of The Light, two criminal organizations, but the heroes of Earth don't know about it. However Gorilla Grodd's Oracle File indicates he withdrawn his support.
  • Narcissist: Probably the best diagnosis for Lex, given his inability to see others as anything other than extensions of himself, his pathological need to be the most important person in the room, and his identification with beings like Brainiac and the Joker.
  • President Evil: The Trope Namer, in fact.
  • Secondary Color Nemesis: Besides his green eyes, Luthor wears a green shirt in casual wear and as president he even wears a purple and green tie.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: What money cannot buy, political influence and business connections can.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: There's not a lot of things Lex's money can't buy.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: He's aware that Clark Kent is Superman thanks to a file he stole from his father before he went to Europe.
  • Super-Intelligence: Though a remarkably intelligent boy prior to being subjected to meteor rock exposure, the work of late Network asset Faceless suggests that Lex Luthor has an exceptional edge in multitasking, computation, strategic thinking, and long-term planning. Not to mention, various advantages in social situations.
  • Super-Toughness: More than once, Lex's medical records have indicated a much higher than average white blood cell count, however these have been labeled as errors. But the work of late Network asset Faceless suggests that these indicate that Lex has a resistance to poison, disease, and various other life-threatening conditions such as exposure to radiation.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Lex got himself elected to president of the United States. He endorsed and advertised to give amnesty of Alien immigrants to form The Advena Legion.
    • As President, Luthor has championed universal healthcare, justice reform (including no longer enforcing federal bans on recreational and medicinal uses of marijuana), and extensive immigration (including extraterrestrial immigration) reform. He has also championed the second amendment, the rights of corporations, and slashed defense spending by considerable margins. He holds a 85% public approval rating.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Lex Luthor and Clark Kent both became friends after he and Clark crash into a river with Lex's sport car in accident that almost killed him. Lex was knocked out and Clark saved his life, but later their friendship went sour after Clark keep his secrets away from him.

    Contessa Erica Alexandra del Portenza
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/contessa_erica_alexandra_del_portenza.jpg
Click for Enhanced Look

Wife of Lex Luthor. She's the last member of the house of Portenza from Markovia.

  • Adaptational Nationality: In the comics she was Italian, but here she's Markovian.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Oracle classified her orientation on her bio straight though she's possibly bisexual if tabloids are to be believed according to her. She's actually pansexual.
  • Dead All Along: Turns out the real Erica Alexandra has been dead for quite some time and Lilith took her identity.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: For her enhanced look she grows out her hair and becomes a redhead. Being a shapeshifting demon makes it really easy.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her dress has a plunging neckline that goes down to her navel. Even her enhanced look still has plenty of cleavage.
  • Older Than They Look: Thanks to her lineage, she looks much younger than she actually is.
  • Only One Name: By Markovian tradition, Erica took the feminine variant of her husband's personal name as a second name. Technically, she also has no surname, only a house name, but the commonly accepted Anglicized practice is to give her the surname of the region she is from.
  • Persona Non Grata: After the Southern Markovian Revolts incident saw Erica exiled of Markovia and was sent to United States to avoid being by rioters. With Portenza stabilized but relations still hostile, Lex and Erica thought it best to name a regent to the area and remain in Vlatava for a while.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: For her enhanced look, it's easy to see where Lena gets her looks from.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: Contessa Erica Alexandra del Portenza: First Lady of USA, Significant Shareholder of LuthorCorp and the Contessa of Portenza in Markovia.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: While Lex's isn't ugly, just look at her.

    Lena Luthor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lena_luthor.jpg
Click for Enhanced Look

Lena Luthor is the daughter of Lex Luthor and Erica Alexandra.

  • In-Series Nickname: Lady Lena and L³.
  • In the Blood: Lena like her father, she becomes a young politician since her father was elected to POTUS and presumptive heir of LuthorCorp.
  • Odd Friendship: She's friends with Cassandra Sandsmark and also befriends Conner Kent, unaware that he's Superboy.
  • Photographic Memory: Lena like her father has eidetic memory who can remember anything she doesn't forget to detail.
  • Related Differently in the Adaptation: She is Lex's daughter here instead of his sister.
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: She has red hair and green eyes inherited from her father.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Lena is a world-class chess player. She won the 2015 World Youth Chess Championship. She has since retired from competitive play to focus her studies.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She stands at 5'8"/173cm tall and she's quite pretty.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She inherited her mother's look while also shares her father's once red hair (before he got bald by the meteor shower in his childhood) and green eyes. Turns out her mother's default appearance also has red hair and green eyes.
  • Token Human: While her mother is a demon and a Lord of Chaos, due to Lilith taking a human identity, she's a normal human without any supernatural powers, unlike most of her half-siblings.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Again, Lex isn't ugly per se, but just look at his daughter.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Lena would mostly only see her father on holidays and during the summer when she would fly out to the States to be with him. As he was busy, Lex often pawned Lena off on a subordinate. Not that Lena complained. She was happy to spend her days shadowing her father's cohorts as they went about their duties and Lex did often find some time in the day to be set aside exclusively for Lena, usually playing chess and talking about their day.

    Luna Luthor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luna_luthor_enhanced_earth_27.jpg

Luna Luthor is the daughter of Lionel Luthor, younger sister of Lex Luthor and mother of Lori Luthor.

  • Adaptation Name Change: In the comics they're two people named Lena Luthor: Lex Luthor's sister and daughter. The name of the sister was changed Luna to avoid confusion.
  • Alliterative Name: Luna Luthor, like her half-brother she's one of the many L.L. who litters the Superman mythos.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Which is a reference to a couple of incarnations where she is bald like her brother.
  • Composite Character: Luna's character aspects are taken straight from Lena Luthor from Supergirl (2015) such as her mother Pamela's death similar to Lena's mother and her friendship with Karen Starr/Supergirl I/Power Girl similar to Kara and Lena's friendship.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Luna Luthor is an autistic savant with an exceptional intellect and a natural proficiency for chemistry, engineering, computer programming, and mathematics. She is a talented inventor in a number of different fields.
  • Hollywood Autism: Though not something she views as a weakness, but rather a problem with the rest of everybody, Luna is a high-functioning autistic savant. She has difficulty communicating and socializing with strangers, but can be rather talkative to those he considers part of her family (her daughter Lori, Lex, Lena, Karen, Lori's friend Laura). She has difficulty with expressing emotion due to past abuses from her father.

She holds a large number of shares in both LuthorCorp and StarrWare, as well as owning a number of highly profitable patents.
  • No Social Skills: Luna is uncomfortable in social situations. In large crowds, she can quickly get anxiety, especially around strangers. In intense moments that require complex social interaction, Luna can also become easily confused and frustrated. She prefers to keep her interactions to be simple and as a result can really only handle anything close to complex social engagements in small groups.
  • Sensory Overload: Due to her autistic nature, Luna finds cities to be very overwhelming. Bright lights, loud sounds, and different tactile sensations can be exciting and wonderful for her, but those particular to cities (traffic lights at night, cars honking, or airplanes flying low) can easily overwhelm her to the point of near catatonia.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She shares a lot of facial features with her brother Lex and has the same green eyes.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Luna got pregnant her first year in college after being taken advantage of by a frat boy, but she decided to keep the child and persevered through classes up until the day of delivery (her water broke while in chemistry class). Supporting her throughout the pregnancy was Karen.
  • The Un-Favourite: Lionel always favored Lex and barely tolerated Luna. He felt that she was an embarrassment and sought to have her sent away to a foreign care center, but her mother fought to keep Luna with her. As a compromise, Lionel sent Luna and Pamela to go live in his summer retreat in Coast City.

  • Alliterative Name: Lionel Luthor, just like so many of his family members and other characters associated with Superman.
  • Beard of Evil: Unlike his clean shaven and bald son, Lionel had a beard and he's one of the reasons why Lex is so ruthless.
  • Conspicuous Trenchcoat: Wears a long and black trench coat, and he sure looks shifty.
  • Posthumous Character: Already dead by the present day.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: More than once did he used his connections to get Lex out of trouble, although he eventually had enough and forced him to be less dependent on him.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Growing up, she was constantly bullied and harassed by the other Amazons in her tribe. This bullying escalated to the point where she was beaten and left for dead several times. To add insult to injury, she was deliberately barred from taking her tribe's Rite of Passage, effectively making her a second-class citizen. Small wonder that she chose to run away.

She is able to influence the talking points of the 24/7 news cycle by what she chooses to brief the press on every morning, as well as by how she frames her briefings. Eve is quite popular with most press agencies and has proved she can keep some stories stalled or buried with simple favor or a quick phone call.

She is an intelligent and well-spoken woman, fluent in three languages (English, German, and French), and is a published author — having penned two of Lex Luthor's biographies.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She stands at 5'9"/175cm tall and she's beautiful and she knows it.

  • Family Man: Sam loves his sister Laura dearly despite her declining mental health. Despite her divorce, Sam made sure to keep an eye on her husband and daughter, feeling it was important to look after his family. He wanted to see if Lois was willing to stand up to her father in order to be with the boy, which Lois never did with anyone but Clark. This won his approval of Clark... even if he wasn't thrilled that Clark got her pregnant before they were married.
  • Related in the Adaptation: He's the son of Charles "Chuck" Lane, the Jester of the Freedom Fighters during WWII.
  • So Proud of You: Though he would rarely emote as much, Sam Lane is a proud parent. He collects all of Lois' articles, even if he doesn't particularly agree with her perspectives. He did always try to attend important ceremonies in Lucy's military career. He also takes great pride in his grandkids, decorating his office with pictures of them he has been sent.
  • The Strategist: Sam was a very strict man, as one might expect from a career military man. Lane is also known for being quite clever, as one might expect from a world-class strategist.
