In-game name: jschlatt
Preferred name: Schlatt (past), Glatt (current)
'"I looked every citizen of L'Manburg in the eyes and I said, 'You listen to me... This place will be a lot different tomorrow.'"

The former self-proclaimed Emperor of Manburg. His goals of expansion directly clashed with the wishes of the previous leader to remain uninvolved, creating many enemies for Jschlatt to contend with. He ended up defeated by the Pogtopians, and died of a heart attack or a stroke before he could be killed.

Schlatt is deceased, and has only returned (canonically) in Quackity's March 16th stream as Glatt. He lost his first life when he was accidentally killed by Technoblade during Tubbo's execution, his second when he was killed by Quackity as he escaped Manburg, and his last when he died of either a stroke or a heart attack during the Manburg vs Pogtopia War.

For tropes relating to this character as he appears in SMPLive, see SMPLive: Schlatt & Co.

    # – H
  • 0% Approval Rating: No one under Schlatt's rule actually seems to like the guy.
    • He wasn't popular to begin with, since he won with only 16% of the popular vote, but over the course of his tenure as president, he manages to make some very powerful enemies and loses every ally he had: Wilbur and Tommy were exiled by him; Niki despises him for exiling her friends and destroying many historic symbols; Eret sees him as a tyrant; Tubbo and Fundy are both working as spies in his administration; Dream views him as completely incompetent, yet is afraid he'll follow through on his promise to expand the borders (which would soon lead to the invasion of land that Dream owns), doing whatever he can to help overthrow him; and even Quackity leaves him to join Wilbur and Tommy after Schlatt tears down the White House and insults him one time too many.
    • As of the Manburg-Pogtopia War, he has no true allies save for George, who has rarely been on the server since his election anyways.
    • At Schlatt's funeral, BadBoyHalo announced to the attendees that all his friends were gathered there on that day, to which he is interrupted by Quackity. BBH quickly corrects himself to say "friends, enemies, and loved ones", but Quackity corrects him in return, "Nah, just enemies."
  • Adaptation Species Change: Despite his in-game appearance as a human, most artworks portrayed Schlatt as a humanoid ram based on his avatar combined with his Minecraft skin.
  • Addled Addict: His addiction to alcohol, protein powder and anabolic steroids took a heavy toll on his health, both physical and mental, and likely caused the heart attack or stroke that took his final life.
  • The Alcoholic: According to Quackity and Fundy. This bit of information seems like just a gag, but it directly foreshadows his death by an alcohol-induced heart attack (or stroke). In the Afterlife, he seems to have gotten into more illicit substances, as, when Dream asks him about Schlatt, Tommy remarks with horror that there are so many more drugs than just alcohol.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Jschlatt ultimately proves to just be a Disc-One Final Boss, while Dream bides his time until Jschlatt's gone only to prove himself the true Big Bad.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: When the Pogtopians find him, he's too drunk to string a sentence together. And after surviving so many events, including Quackity's betrayal, Techno's massacre — hell, the preceding battle itself — he simply dies of a heart attack (or a stroke) before any of them can get a stab in. invoked
  • Arc Villain: He serves as the main antagonist for most of the Manberg Rebellion Arc, and he dies towards the end of it.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: His decrees as President include naming himself the Emperor of Manburg (which he renamed from L'Manburg), exiling his political opponents, increasing taxes on disobedient citizens, killing all the wildlife, and pledging to replace all the fountains with Hawaiian Punch.
  • Audience? What Audience?: While other characters don't shy away from self-referential meta humor, Schlatt is very insistent against the idea that anything happening isn't real — a trait which is actually carried over from his character on SMPLive.
Schlatt: "Let's remember this is all roleplay?" No, it's not. This is real. Minecraft is real life.
  • Bad Boss: He treats next to none of his subordinates kindly, most notably Tubbo and Quackity, the latter of whom he apparently didn't even pay a minimum wage despite serving as his Number Two and being promised a six-figure salary.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: One of his orders as the President of Manburg is to have all the wildlife in the country killed. His killing of cats for no apparent reason is also one of the lead causes for the formation of the Badlands faction.
  • Bait the Dog: Throughout his presidency, Schlatt often fluctuates between being Laughably Evil, devilishly charismatic, and genuinely terrifying. His comedically evil actions and words create a false sense of security that shatters when he suddenly drops the comedy. He was even able to bait some of the characters in-universe into thinking better of him until the Red Festival.
  • Beard of Evil: He's a President Evil who refuses to shave. According to Quackity, his facial hair represents his power.
  • Believing Their Own Lies: Schlatt frequently spins himself as a benevolent leader who is genuinely improving Manberg after freeing it from a pair of tyrants. While it initially seems like he's just paying lip service to himself, it becomes increasingly clear that Schlatt genuinely believes that he's the good guy, and that his expansionary policies and rebuilding of Manberg are genuinely making things better for his citizens. Niki frequently tries to point out that Schlatt's making things worse for everybody, but true to form, he completely ignores her.
  • Bilingual Backfire: In this stream, Quackity considers speaking in Spanish to confuse Schlatt, and several of his donations sent messages in the language as well... only to find out that Schlatt himself can understand Spanish well enough to recognize Quackity's very fast Foreign-Language Tirade as a prayer. He doesn't understand specifically Mexican Spanish, though, since he learnt European Spanish.
Schlatt: Yeah, that's right. We're on equal footing. I may have gotten ratioed, but I know Spanish. You can't get anything past me.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Schlatt actually does have some good policies and is far more shrewd than he lets on, but he clearly cares a lot more about the perks of his power than anything else and doesn't put a whole lot of effort into maintaining his power base, assuming his position naturally entitles him to it.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Before the election, Tommy clearly looks up to Schlatt and repeatedly tries to get Dream to unban him from the server, even owning a suit styled after Schlatt's. Schlatt "rewards" his admiration by exiling him and Wilbur from L'Manberg and forcing them to Run or Die; as a result, Tommy understandably starts to loathe Schlatt and outright refers to him as "the worst thing to ever happen to this server".
    • While Fundy initially only joins Schlatt's cabinet to serve as The Mole, he starts to actually start looking up to Schlatt and viewing him as a good leader because Schlatt's genuine appreciation for Fundy's hard work fills Fundy's desperate need to be appreciated by an authority figure. Schlatt's actions at the Manberg Festival serve as a reality check and forces Fundy to accept that Schlatt is a murderous, irredeemable tyrant. Schlatt's remarks when he learns Fundy has betrayed him only shatters the pedestal further.
    • Quackity initially thinks Schlatt will genuinely help L'Manberg improve and genuinely cares for him, only for Schlatt to turn out to be a toxic, abusive piece of shit who relentlessly bullies Quackity. Eventually, he has enough and shoots Schlatt dead while calling him out for being an ungrateful jerk who's ruining the country.
  • The Bully: After winning his presidency, Schlatt immediately begins throwing his weight around and harassing his subordinates over the pettiest of reasons. It's this attitude that drives away Quackity, who took the brunt of Schlatt's abuse.
  • The Caligula: As the President of Manburg, Schlatt lacks professionalism, going so far as to drink whilst performing a presidential speech and allowing an underage child to drink alcohol at an event. He also orders that every lake be drained and all the wildlife be killed and demands the public execution of a minor for being The Mole (which everyone else, including his own staff, is appalled by).
  • Can't Take Criticism: Schlatt's massive ego and controlling nature means he can absolutely not take any sort of criticism or even being disagreed with. His typical response to it is to scream down the source no matter how minor the criticism; he orders Niki to be exiled and then flat-out killed because she criticized his tyrannical reign one too many times for his liking.
  • Came Back Wrong: Phil, Eret, and Ranboo end up accidently bringing forth Schlatt's soul, which refers to itself as 'Glatt', during their second attempt at reviving Wilbur. Though he speaks without a body during his limited time talking and frankly would've preferred not being woken up at all. This is later amended to be non-canonical.
  • Character Overlap: Canonically the same person as his SMPLive counterpart.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Jschlatt joins the server for a while before being anticlimactically kicked by Dream. When he rejoins, he proceeds to take over L'Manburg and force Wilbur and Tommy into hiding, acting as the main villain for the rest of the arc.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: One could at least argue that Dream had noble intentions at the time, and considering that independence was declared over Wilbur and Tommy being unable to flood the SMP market with "drugs" (aka potions), one could also argue that our heroes weren't perfect either. However, Jschlatt is so Obviously Evil that he alienates nearly everyone on the server, including his own citizens and political allies, as he campaigns for more power.
  • Control Freak: As the President/Emperor of Manburg, he centralizes power onto himself and refuses to listen to anyone else's opinion. This also ends up as one of the reasons Quackity clashes with him and eventually betrays him in favour of Pogtopia.
  • Corrupt Politician: While campaigning for presidency, Schlatt attacks the competition by shooting at them with a crossbow and he uses shady tactics to win his presidency by pooling his votes with SWAG2020. In his defense, Wilbur and Tommy tried to do the same thing, though Schlatt's actions once he wins the presidency destroy any potential sympathy for him.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Despite being a late-coming candidate for the L'Manburg Election, he is the one who ends up winning the position of President, as opposed to the main parties, POG2020 (led by Wilbur) and SWAG2020 (led by Quackity). Though to be fair, Schlatt only won because Quackity pooled his votes with him, and even with both of their votes combined, they only narrowly won by 1% of the popular vote, with votes for Schlatt even being in the minority (Schlatt2020's 16% to SWAG2020's 30%).
  • Defiant to the End: When he's cornered in the Camarvan by the collective forces of Pogtopia, the Badlands and the Greater Dream SMP, a drunk Schlatt angrily calls them out for turning on him and attacks anyone who gets too close with a broken bottle.
  • Despotism Justifies the Means: Schlatt stopped at nothing to gain power, whether it took terrorizing fellow members of the SMP by shooting crossbow bolts at them, or using shady, if not outright illegal tactics to gain his presidency, i.e. pooling his votes with SWAG2020. Once he actually gets his hands on the presidency, it all goes downhill from there.
  • Didn't Think This Through: As a result of his power high, Schlatt thinks that his position protects him from the consequences of his actions and thus engages in a lot of pointless cruelty for his own amusement. He winds up pushing away all his allies because of his disgusting and unreliable behavior.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Schlatt's defeat in the Manburg-Pogtopia War came very early on and very easily, considering he was completely alone, unarmed, and too drunk to string a coherent sentence together. Turns out the real threats were Wilbur, who proceeded to blow up L'Manburg in an attempt to off himself, Techno, who started shooting at others and destroying the ruins of L'Manburg because the others tried to re-establish L'Manburg as a country against his anarchist wishes, and Dream, who orchestrated half of what was going on and ultimately gets away with it all.
  • Domestic Abuse: His ex-fiancé, Quackity does not associate good things with Schlatt, who insulted him, didn't pay him a minimum wage while working for him, and even hit him with a pickaxe or shot him with a crossbow several times, and threatened to have him lobotomized for not meeting his beauty standards once. This gets deconstructed eventually, as Quackity reached his Rage Breaking Point when Schlatt destroyed the White House, took his second canon life, and resigned as Vice President to join Pogtopia... and is later all but outright stated to have massive amounts of trauma as a result of Schlatt's sheer douchebaggery.
  • Dramatic Irony: After having Technoblade execute Tubbo, he tells Quackity and Fundy that he couldn't imagine the two of them betraying him. Unbeknownst to him, Fundy is not on his side either, being an even more secretive mole than Tubbo. As for Quackity, Schlatt's behaviour eventually caused Quackity to revolt and defect to Pogtopia.
  • Drunk with Power: After getting elected, Schlatt immediately goes on a power craze and immediately turns into a tyrannical dictator. He enacts expansionistic policies to make Manberg (and thus himself) more powerful and exploits his position so he can bully the residents of Manberg without fear of retaliation.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. He, poorly, tries rekindling his past relationship with Quackity, who hates him and refuses to engage in anything more then a business relationship with him.
  • The Emperor: He leans closest to Type 1 — a man who transforms the more benevolent L'Manburg into the tyrannical Manburg after winning the election, rules his country with an iron fist, desires conquest, and mistreats his subjects and subordinates to the point that no one likes him. Even Quackity, his Vice President and the man who helped him gain power in the first place, gets put down so much that he eventually has an argument with Schlatt over his desire to centralize the power of the state onto himself, ends their relationship by assassinating him, and defects to Pogtopia. On the flip side, though, Schlatt never wears armour and isn't known for his combat skill, but is a savvy businessman and far more intelligent than most people would be let on.
  • Enemy to All Living Things: One of Schlatt's initial policies is to kill all the wildlife on the server, and he beats a cat to death during the Manberg Festival for no reason and immediately tries to do the same to Antfrost.
    Schlatt: All cats must die!
  • Et Tu, Brute?:
    • Not that it in any way justifies what he's done, but after having Tubbo executed, Schlatt admits he felt genuinely hurt that his "right-hand man" would betray him.
    • He was also shocked to see Fundy, who had secretly been The Mole all along (one independent of but sympathetic towards Pogtopia), among the crowd confronting him in the Camarvan. When someone knocks Fundy into the van itself, Schlatt starts hitting him with a broken bottle and insulting him as a result of this.
    • Notably averted when Quackity shoots him with a bow after having enough of his abuse. Schlatt is totally nonplussed, and his only reaction is to get Punz to help him tear down the White House instead of Quackity. He does express anger about it when he's cornered in the Camarvan, though he's unable to understand why Quackity betrayed him even when he points out it was the result of Schlatt's abuse.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Subverted. After Schlatt has Tubbo executed, Wilbur tries to give himself up to be killed in exchange for sparing Niki. Schlatt tells him it's unnecessary, as he wasn't intending to kill Niki and views killing two people on the same day as abhorrent… then, after thinking it over for a moment, Schlatt orders her killed as well.
  • Evil Is Hammy: He often becomes incredibly dramatic during his speeches as The Emperor, and even outside of his public appearances, he's probably one of the few people that can make toxic masculinity seem absolutely hilarious.
Schlatt: (to Quackity) You know, when my Rogue– when my Rogue in-home gym equipment got delivered two hours ago, I made myself a promise. I said I'm not gonna associate– I'm not gonna take orders from these fucking– (overlapping with Quackity calling him out for being an Ungrateful Bastard) low-T, soy-boy beta males. LOW-T, SOY-BOY BETA MALES, AND I INJECTED AN ELECTRIC FUCK LOAD OF ANABOLIC STEROIDS INTO MY ASS, AND I'M FEELING JACKED!!!
  • Evil Is Petty: Schlatt's Control Freak nature means he cannot take any challenge to his authority, no matter how minor, and he will relentlessly bully anyone who does so. Some of his policies, like taxing Niki more and forcing everybody to wear suits, only further demonstrate this.
  • Evil Overlord: Deconstructed. After being elected as president of L'Manberg, Schlatt immediately begins centralizing his power and sets out on an expansionist agenda, intending to conquer the entire server. On top of this, he begins bullying and threatening both his subordinates and the residents of his country like a standard Evil Overlord, and engages in public and often brutal displays of his power. As a result of his brazenly cruel and power-hungry behavior, he alienates most of his allies and drives them to abandon him. By the end of the arc and season, his position becomes essentially meaningless as he's turned almost the entire server against him, and pretty much everyone who hasn't been directly wronged by him still recognize that keeping him alive holds pretty much no benefit for anyone.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: His voice is quite deep, and he is the Arc Villain of the Manburg Rebellion storyline.
  • Eviler than Thou: Tommy notes that Schlatt is actually far worse than Dream; while they're both undeniably monsters, Dream is at the very least pragmatic about what he does and doesn't go out of his way to cause pointless suffering. Meanwhile, Schlatt is a borderline-insane sadist who does whatever comes to his head the instant he thinks of it, meaning he's far more rash than Dream is and thus is a lot more willing to engage in needless brutality just for the fun of it. It's subverted in later seasons, as Dream becomes increasingly depraved and sadistic until he's clearly not much better than Schlatt (and in some cases, far worse).
  • Face–Heel Turn: He starts off as Wilbur and Tommy's friend, but quickly betrays them during the election and dismantles everything they've built in one fell swoop.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • His alcoholism, which quite literally does him in for the final time.
    • His inability to not Kick the Dog. Schlatt thinks his presidency gives him a pass to do whatever he wants whenever he wants without consequence, which results in him engaging in a lot of pointless cruelty, which can range anywhere from bullying to public executions. It results in him alienating most of the server with how much of a dick he is; by the end of Season 1, he's been abandoned by all of his allies and next to the entire server wants him dead.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Schlatt is remarkably jovial and wisecracking, but it's entirely undermined by how much of an unrepentant jerkass he is.
  • Flirtatious Smack on the Ass: In the first "Las Nevadas" stream, Schlatt offhandedly admits to doing this with his fiancé at the time while he was alive, while the aforementioned ex-fiancé is confronting him.
  • Foil:
    • To Dream. Dream would have been considered a dictator, but when the war ended he gave L'Manburg independence despite having no reason to (as he'd won) and respected the terms of the peace treaty, with the only conflict with him afterwards being provoked by others (namely Tommy). Jschlatt, however, blatantly ignored this treaty and actively generated conflict wherever he went (a 0% Approval Rating will do that). Dream's dictatorship was more subdued and quiet, but he's a lot smarter and more rational, being a fairly significant direct threat but being even more dangerous in the long run. Jschlatt favored a much more bold approach and while he was definitely the bigger immediate threat, he was also an idiot and borderline insane. Jschlatt shines brighter but burns out faster, and come the end of the civil war, he was drinking himself to death in the Camaravan. Dream shines less but lasts far longer, and come the end of the civil war, he's sitting comfortably from Dream SMP territory, having gotten exactly what he wanted with next-to-no personal losses.
    • To Quackity, his ex, especially during the latter's Las Nevadas arc. Both are ruthless and willing to manipulate others to achieve their ends, and their respective behaviour is usually seen as morally questionable at best or outright unethical, immoral, and villainous at worst. Both have also made a statement along the lines that they would/will die alongside the country they rule over. However, regarding their respective statements, Schlatt said that Manburg would go down with him if he died, being arrogant enough to claim that the entirety of the country depended on him; while Quackity's claim was that if Las Nevadas were to die, he would die along with it and not vice versa (like Schlatt), because he's despondent and insecure to the point of tying the crumbled remnants of his self-worth to Las Nevadas, which is seen as his last chance for success, and if it fails, he will have lost everything and won't be able to come back from it. Schlatt's backstory and reason for villainy is canonically unknown, yet Quackity's idealist-to-cynic Trauma Conga Line (including Schlatt and his actions, who he opposed and dislikes to this day) is shown in full force, making him far more sympathetic than the Hate Sink that Schlatt was.
  • For the Evulz:
  • Foreshadowing: His death via heart attack/stroke has surprisingly been foreshadowed multiple times throughout his entire tenure as President.
    • During his date with Quackity, something starts beeping. Upon the response that the beeping wasn't from a microwave oven, Quackity asks if he's dating a dying man.
    • At the Manburg Festival, Quackity claims that Schlatt's "mouldy" hands might be related to his blood flow. While this claim is medically inaccurate, heart attacks and strokes are caused by blocked blood vessels (i.e. bad blood flow) to the heart and brain, respectively.
    • Fundy's journal as a spy makes a lot of notes about Schlatt's medical history, which, obviously, includes his alcoholism... which ends up doing him in for the final time.
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: Minutes before his death, when Schlatt sees Fundy among the many SMP members confronting him in Wilbur's drug van, he hits Fundy repeatedly with a broken bottle.
  • Hate Sink: He is a calculating, manipulative Control Freak of a dictator who orders the execution of a teenager after making him plan the festival he would be unknowingly executed at, and mistreats his subordinates so much that pretty much his entire administration is either The Mole or would end up betraying him for Pogtopia. By the time of his death, the entire server hates him so much that they gang up on him during the final battle of Season 1, and celebrate his death after it occurs by showing their Last Disrespects at his funeral. For example, his ex-fiancé, Quackity, who shot him after resigning from being his Number Two, is able to commit Black Comedy Cannibalism with no repercussions, which just goes to show how badly everyone on the server hated him.
  • Horns of Villainy: Most fanart of Schlatt depicts him with ram horns based on his avatar combined with his Minecraft skin. His ghost persona also has a pair of ram horns.
  • Hypocrite: He constantly rails against Wilbur and Tommy for being tyrants, which is something that Schlatt very much is.

    I – Y
  • I Reject Your Reality: Schlatt has truly convinced himself that Wilbur and Tommy were tyrants who ran L'Manberg into the ground, and that he is a benevolent leader who rescued it from the brink of collapse and turned it into the most powerful nation on the server. While it is true that Schlatt made L'Manburg more powerful during his rule, a lot of this is just a fantasy constructed to feed his egotism.
  • In-Series Nickname: Quackity called him "Prez" several times, as short for 'President'.
  • It Amused Me: The first time Schlatt had Niki imprisoned (on Jack's balcony) wasn't because she accidentally killed Quackity non-canonically, but because he found her being trapped behind bars funny. This is quickly followed by Quackity breaking her out in secret.
  • It's All About Me: Schlatt's massive ego and controlling tendencies combine to make him very selfish. He's become totally convinced that Manberg lives and dies based on his actions, and he does everything in his power to destroy Wilbur and Tommy's contributions to the nation just because the very fact someone ruled the country before him bruises his ego.
  • Jerkass: As the rest of the tropes here can tell you, Schlatt is a massive dick with next to no redeeming qualities. He's crude, violent, petty, arrogant, and temperamental, and he spends pretty much all of his time bullying everyone in sight.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: While Schlatt engages in shady tactics to win his presidency, he's not very different morally from Wilbur and Tommy, who tried to rig the election in their favor initially and later tries to pool votes with Quackity to win.note  The only real difference is how much better at it Schlatt is. Then he gets elected and exiles Wilbur and Tommy from L'Manburg, ordering his citizens to chase them out and hunt them down, crossing the line from a mere corrupt politician to a tyrannical dictator.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: Schlatt has a tendency to brush off any and all cruel and hurtful comments he makes as jokes, and tells the people he upset that they're taking it too seriously. It only underscores his jerkassery, and by the time Quackity meets him again as a ghost in the first Las Nevadas episode, he's explicitly fed up with Schlatt treating him like this, both in life and in death.
  • Karma Houdini: As he died from a natural cause (a heart attack/stroke), he was unable to truly face punishment for his crimes.
  • Kick the Dog: Schlatt is very prone to unnecessary and petty acts of cruelty.
    • After Wilbur peacefully cedes his position to Schlatt when he wins the election, Schlatt immediately exiles him and Tommy from L'Manberg, both to solidify his own power and because he's so egotistical that he can't bear the thought of anyone else having lead the country but him.note
    • When Niki refuses to bake food for Manberg in protest of Schlatt's rule, he orders her to be locked in prison as punishment for her "crime". In fact, his treatment of Niki in general is unnecessarily cruel, and he's prone to using his authority to bully her because he hates the fact she won't submit to his rule. By the time the Manburg-Pogtopia War rolls around, Niki has no qualms openly calling for Schlatt's death in the Camarvan and for someone to just kill him already.
    • When Tubbo protests his decision to tear down the Camarvan, Schlatt initially seems to accept the suggestion, only to suddenly start berating Tubbo and compare him to a whining toddler for the crime of disagreeing with him.
    • The Manberg Festival is one long Kick the Dog moment. Schlatt has Tubbo plan the entire festival and even write a speech just so he can twist the knife all the more when he traps him in cement and reveals that he's known all along about his treachery. Schlatt then orders Techno to execute Tubbo, in spite everyone else's protests. After Tubbo's execution is carried out, he blames Wilbur for Tubbo's death and off-handedly orders Niki killed as well, calmly watching as they're both forced to Run or Die. And to top it all off, he beats a random cat to death in front of the remaining festival-goers for no reason.
    • His insistence on destroying the White House in spite of Quackity's protests. He doesn't even intend to replace it with anything, apparently just wanting to tear it down just to be an asshole; and just to drive the point in, he has a tiny "Monument to Crying About It" built where the White House once stood almost immediately after Quackity escapes the country. Hell, all of his treatment of Quackity counts, especially once it becomes clear how much Schlatt's abuse has traumatized him.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Played with. Schlatt is Laughably Evil, but his actions after becoming president cause the SMP to undergo Cerebus Syndrome and become more plot-based, as well as directly and indirectly causing a lot of pain and suffering for almost the entire server down the line.
  • Large Ham: Schlatt proves to be a very dramatic orator after being elected, and his commitment to toxic masculinity makes him no less hammy when he isn't making speeches.
  • Laughably Evil: Schlatt is one of the few characters on the server who can be classified as outright evil, but he's also utterly hilarious with his brazen assholery and wisecracking.
  • Menacing Stroll: He has a tendency to walk everywhere, it becomes this trope when he pursues Quackity after the failed meeting for Plan Ass as he cryptically reveals his plans.
  • Men Don't Cry: He seems to be of this belief and frequently tells others that disagree with him to "cry about it". It lines up with his persona of toxic masculinity.
  • Mood Whiplash: His inauguration speech right after the elections famously exiles Wilbur and Tommy from L'Manburg and orders them be chased out of the country and hunted down. What is usually left out of the animatics is that he ends the speech by fawning over his Vice President/fiancé's rear end.
  • Moral Myopia:
    • After Tubbo's execution, Schlatt calls out Wilbur for standing by and watching in an almost self-righteous manner, completely ignoring the fact that he had been the one to order the execution in the first place.
    • He frequently rails against Wilbur and Tommy for being tyrants, which is pretty hypocritical for obvious reasons.
  • Morality Pet: Fundy is pretty much the only person Schlatt consistently treats with a modicum of kindness. It's implied that Schlatt is doing this to exploit Fundy's need to feel validated by an authority figure to keep him loyal, and his bigoted comments once he learns Fundy is a spy hints that Schlatt's apparent friendship with him was an act from both ends.
  • Mysterious Middle Initial: First initial, in this case. Though his IGN is Jschlatt, most characters call him "Schlatt", implying he is referred to by Last-Name Basis, with no canonical indication what the 'J' stands for. Some fans joke that it's for something along the lines of 'Jonathan' or 'Jebediah' (of varying spellings), but this is not confirmed.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Schlatt often relies on those around him for physical protection, and during the final battle for Manburg, he spends the entire battle lifting weights while drinking heavily in the Camarvan instead of doing anything productive, like actually fighting for his country.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: For Glatt specifically in the Tales from the SMP episode "The Haunted Mansion". Glatt initially appears to be the Big Bad of the episode, kidnapping Connor and making the other characters hunt for 3 Nether Stars for the chance to bring him back, all the while slowly taking away more and more of them. It turns out in the end that Connor was fine the whole time, and so is everyone else, and that the whole thing was planned by Glatt and Connor as Glatt felt lonely and wanted people to come party with him.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Schlatt is an old, sickly, senile alcoholic who sinks like a rock and drowns in even the shallowest body of water. He almost never wears armor leading to him being an easy target for assassinations, and relies on others to protect him from mobs. It's very easy to underestimate him and doing so would be a very big mistake; he is much more clever than he lets on and keeps his cards very close. He is also a savvy businessman and has somehow convinced Dream to make a contract with him, mitigating any disadvantage he may have had in the manpower department.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Schlatt constantly claims that everything he does is for the benefit of Manberg, and frames himself as a benevolent leader doing what's necessary to strengthen his nation into a superpower. However, it's blatantly clear that everything Schlatt does is to feed his insatiable craving for power, and all of his claims of being well-intentioned are clearly just made to feed his own ego.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Played with. Schlatt's over-the-top toxic masculinity, substance abuse, refusal to wear body armor, and wisecracking personality make him seem like a moronic joke. In reality, he's very cunning and savvy enough to exploit this image at the expense of his enemies; he spent weeks pretending to be unaware Tubbo was The Mole just so he could publicly execute him just to showcase his own power. He's still something of an idiot, just a very dangerous one.
  • Obliviously Evil: Schlatt seems to genuinely think he's a benevolent leader improving Manburg after it was run into the ground by a pair of tyrants, in spite of the litany of evidence that it's the other way around.
Schlatt: (after having Fundy rebuild the Manberg flag with crying obsidian and magma) It just feels good, y'know? I mean, we're getting work done! It feels good to be productive, does it not?
    Fundy: It does feel good.
Schlatt: Does it not? You can't look at what we did today and say that this was not done for the exact. Right. Reasons.
  • Obviously Evil: According to Technoblade, at least.
Wilbur: You– You actually murdered Tubbo.
Schlatt: Yeah... I mean, you actually, uh... You actually let him do that. I mean, Wilbur, I... I took you as– y'know, you were a shitty leader, but... I didn't think you'd– I didn't think you'd aid and abet Tubbo! [...]
Wilbur: Just... If you're gonna kill anyone else, kill me. Don't kill anyone else here. That's why I've–
Schlatt: Yeah, yeah, Loverboy, I've had enough out of your mouth. I'm not gonna kill anyone else, what do I– do I look like a bad guy? Do I look like a bad guy to you?
    Techno: I mean, kinda.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Schlatt's greyed-out appearance as Glatt gains an extra set of ram horns, though this is revealed to be non-canonical, and further canonical appearances of Glatt lack a pair of ram horns.
  • Paper Tiger: Eventually, Schlatt manages to turn the entire server against him with his impulsive and short-sighted acts of cruelty, but he uses the illusion of power to prevent anyone from acting on it. He eventually manages to mitigate this by getting Dream in his side after making a deal with him.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: In the Manburg-Pogtopia War, he refers to Fundy, who is canonically an anthropomorphic fox (and questionably trans), as not a real man. Tubbo has also claimed that Schlatt "liked his slurs" during his speech at his funeral.
  • President Evil: He is democratically elected as the president of L'Manburgnote ... and immediately makes himself Emperor and either imprisons or exiles those who oppose him, and that's just the start. Obviously, this is lampshaded several times by various people on the server.
  • Psycho Ex: According to Quackity, if he got Schlatt to sign divorce papers to end their relationship, Schlatt would probably kill him on the spot and/or do unspeakable things to him, which also implies that Schlatt is a Foot-Dragging Divorcee. This is why he opted for a hotel building permit to try to scam Schlatt out of power instead.
Quackity: (writing the building permit) "The Official Manburg Hotel… Building Permit". Remember, this is just gonna be a building permit– (reads a message from his chat) NO! (laughs) WH– DIVORCE PAPERS? WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO– WHAT DO YOU WANT, HIM TO KILL ME RIGHT THEN AND THERE, CHAT? You want Schlatt to just slice– he's gonna be like– gonna be like, "Uh, Flatty Patty? You were gonna divorce me?" He's gonna fucking pull out- pull out whatever he's got underneath th– (cuts himself off) You know what, I'm not gonna even go into detail.
  • Real Men Take It Black: Subverted. Despite being a "tough man" who is obsessed with working out, Schlatt adds a lot of creamer to his coffee.
  • Sadist: Schlatt definitely shows some signs of this. He always makes a public show of dealing with his rivals, making it as traumatic and humiliating as he possibly can. While this is mainly a way to consolidate his power and make people too afraid to rebel against him, Schlatt takes way too much pleasure in it and he always does his best to twist the knife as much as he can.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Schlatt always wears his iconic suit and tie. This is extended to his administration, who all wear suits to mimic him, and one of Schlatt's policies is to have suits as a dress code for people living in his country.
  • Sketchy Successor: While Wilbur wasn't always the most upright guy during his presidency, he was for the most part a noble if somewhat unambitious leader who just wanted to make a nation free of Dream's oppressive rule and was satisfied when he got it, and genuinely cares about his friends and cabinet. Schlatt, on the other hand, is far more ambitious, but he's a terrible leader in every other regard and a bullying, tyrannical, and power-mad dictator.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Not that being the leader of a country is anything to sneeze at, but Schlatt clearly believes his position gives him a lot more power than it actually does. At some points, he appears to believe he genuinely controls the entire server, and outright forgets who Dream is once.
  • Smug Snake: Schlatt is genuinely crafty, but his out-of-control ego makes him think he's a lot smarter and tougher than he actually is and results in him thinking he can get away with a lot more than he actually can, resulting in him alienating all of his allies. It actually works to his advantage for a while, as he manages to convince people he still has a significant power base long after he turns the server against him, but eventually even his few remaining allies abandon him once it becomes clear that for all of his bluster, Schlatt is a pathetic moron.
  • Straw Hypocrite: Schlatt insists on his speeches that he cares about L'Manberg and is only trying to change it for the better, but it's very clear he doesn't give a damn about the country and his expansionistic policies are very blatantly an effort to give himself even more power. It's played with, as Schlatt seems to genuinely believe his own lies.
  • Stupid Evil: Schlatt clearly believes that his position protects him from the consequences of his actions. As a result, he bullies his subordinates, the residents of Manberg, or anyone unfortunate enough to run into him with impunity, being convinced that they can't retaliate, and repeatedly and publicly engages in sadistic and pointlessly cruel actions like executing Tubbo and beating a cat to death for no reason. Not only does this alienate most of the server, but it convinces all of his allies to turn on him once they realize Schlatt is far more trouble than he's worth. Dream even outright dismisses him as a moron after he abandons him to his fate.
  • Super Drowning Skills: He's unable to swim, forcing his underlings to push him out of the water should he fall in it. Fundy attributes it to muscle atrophy in "A Spy's Diary".
  • Taking You with Me: Schlatt thinks this will happen, saying that if he dies, Manberg will die, too. And he's technically right — shortly after his death, Manberg is disbanded and replaced with New L'Manberg.
  • Terms of Endangerment: After Quackity's defection to Pogtopia, Schlatt starts calling him by his real life first name, "Alex". He also calls Wilbur "Loverboy" on occasion.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: He is obsessed with working out and doesn't like being associated with "low-T, soy-boy beta males" (his words, not ours). As a bonus, he is also known to be a user of anabolic steroids, and shows several psychological side effects of misusing them... in other words, he quite literally had testosterone poisoning.
Schlatt: I don't even know how my– how many anabo– how much testosterone is running through my blood– veins right now. You don't even wanna know.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Schlatt isn't exactly a nice guy to begin with, but he was generally well-liked by the server and got along well enough with everyone else. The literal second he gets elected, he immediately goes over the edge and becomes an abusive, egotistical tyrant riding on a power high that doesn't end until he dies.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: After he wins the L'Manburg election, he declares himself Emperor, changes the country's name to Manburg, and exiles Wilbur and Tommy from the country. Then everything goes downhill from there.
  • Undignified Death: After Dream's surrender, the Pogtopians find Schlatt inside the Camarvan, shitfaced to the point where he barely knows where he is, and furiously lifting weights. They debate whether or not to kill him, until Schlatt asks if they can smell toast, starts breathing heavily, then dies of a heart attack (or a stroke).
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Quackity helped Schlatt gain the majority of the votes to become president (Quackity got 30% of the popular vote while Schlatt only got 16%), and became Schlatt's vice president... but Schlatt was also determined to centralize power onto himself and eventually tore down the White House, which Quackity built. This gets Played for Drama when Quackity reaches his Rage Breaking Point and calls Schlatt out for being an ungrateful, controlling jerkass before resigning from his post as Vice President and assassinating Schlatt.
  • Villain Has a Point: Deconstructed. It's pointed out by Tubbo and Fundy that Schlatt's policies are actually improving Manberg, in a sense. He's set up an actual economic infrastructure and his expansionist policies have genuinely strengthened the country. However, Tubbo also notes that in spite of this, nobody is actually happy under his reign, and that Schlatt's tyrannical and sadistic personality means that the cons of having him as president definitely outweigh the pros, not to mention that a good chunk of his policiesnote  are petty, nonsensical, or borne entirely from his egotism. Unfortunately, an already spiraling Wilbur is unable to reconcile these two facts together and convinces himself that he's the bad guy.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Initially, Schlatt is pretty well-liked by the server at large, to the point that Wilbur legitimately believes having him endorse POG2020 would boost their chances of winning the election. He quickly throws his reputation out the window the second he gets elected and reveals his true colors as a tyrannical dictator. It's averted entirely by the end of Season 1, by which point almost literally the entire server wants Schlatt dead.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He has a particularly pathetic one during the first season finale. When the combined forces of Pogtopia, the Badlands, and the Greater Dream SMP all corner him in the Camarvan, Schlatt starts drunkenly ranting about how all of his allies have betrayed him while denying any wrongdoing on his part and attacking anyone who gets too close with a broken bottle.
  • Villainous Crush: Implied. He makes an offhand comment about Wilbur's rear end as the President of Manburg and seems to express attraction towards him at multiple points in time, and as Glatt, he mentions a songwriter in a beanie with a "terrible, terrible accent" that he hates but also finds cute.
  • Visionary Villain: Schlatt has grand ambitions of turning Manberg into a superpower, which fuels his expansionistic policies and motivates him to engage in a lot of unethical and downright cruel acts to consolidate his own power.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Before the election, he and Tommy are on pretty good terms and have something of a Vitriolic Best Buds dynamic. Schlatt quickly burns bridges between them when he enters the election by firing crossbow bolts at Tommy immediately after he becomes a candidate; after becoming President, he orders Tommy to get off the podium and forces him to Run or Die in his inauguration speech just moments later.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Safe to say, winning the election gave him a taste of power and he hasn't come down from the high.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He forces Technoblade to publicly execute Tubbo at the Manburg Festival, which even Quackity and Techno think is too much.
  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: He tries this with Quackity after starting to tear down the White House, which culminates into Quackity's Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal.
Schlatt: You're too much of a pussy to even shoot me with the bow, it'll kill me in one blow, but (mockingly) "Oh, no, I can't do it! I can't do it, I'm Quackity! I'm Quackity, I don't know what sex feels like–"
Quackity: (proceeds to shoot Schlatt with the bow, killing him in one blow) Fuck you. Fuck you. I'm out, I'm outta here. I'm fucking outta here, man. (walks off)

"Does anybody smell toast?"
