Regulators of Interdimensional Frontiers and Technology

    Zahra Sinclair
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_zahra.png

The heroine who is tasked with finding the identity of Suspect X

  • The Ace: Even the Big Bad admits near the end that she is very good at what she is doing.
  • Action Duo: In the final battle with Rogue Zahra.
  • Action Girl: Very much so, the soundtrack for the final level is fittingly called Alone Against an Army. She wins.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She is one of the nicest people in the game and always willing to listen to somebody who needs help. Most villains do however horribly underestimate her ability to beat them up and drag them into prison if she has to.
  • Break the Cutie: Both the fake reveal of Suspect X and learning about RIFT's darker sides do really bring her down.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: She is genuinely good at noticing details like Ripjaw knowing about other worlds despite that his world should not have the ability to travel to other dimensions or that Rogue Zahra does have a very personal reason for her hatred. It also allows her to suspect that there is something wrong about Director Wiseheart's conclusion before the endgame.
  • The Heroine: She is the playable protagonist of the game.
  • The Idealist: Geniunely believes that RIFT can change for the better and that the organisation can overcome its dark side. The ending shows RIFT making progress in that regard. She also believes that most of her enemies are able to do this. The final battle proves her right by Rogue Zahra coming to her aid.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: She completely rejects Rogue Zahra's offer for Revenge against Suspect X and RIFT and instead is able to finally convince her alternate self to let go of her hatred.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: A caravan of dinosaur people is about to raid a helpless village? A few explosions later they will think otherwise.
  • Odd Friendship: She is super-friendly with the equally nice Cthulhu-like V"!!K}~X and helps him to eventually get a job at RIFT.
  • Parents as People: Zahra had a huge disagreement with her family when they disapproved her joining RIFT. According to her in return she was pretty cruel towards them when she was 15 until they finally managed to sit down and talk about it openly.
  • The Power of Friendship: Manages to befriend a lot of people from her coworkers to eventually her own alternate version. Even a few of the villains begin to respect her after their second defeat.
  • Space Police: Zahra is not just patrolling space, the entire multiverse can be involved.
  • Super Cop: She starts out strong and - especially with the right upgrades - can become a real force to be reckoned with.
  • Underestimating Badassery: All the villains except the traitor do underestimate her at first.
  • Undying Loyalty: Never stops believing in Skip even after he is falsely revealed to be Suspect X. Visiting him in prison to cheer him up is even an achievement.

    Skip Hollister
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_skip.png

Zahra's partner in RIFT missions.

  • Childhood Friend Romance: He clearly has a crush on Zahra as his reaction if she shows him the love letter is very telling.
  • Kid Detective: Despite his young age he provides useful information to Zahra in most levels.
  • Red Herring: All clues do point towards him as he is the only character not ruled out by them. But he is neither Suspect X nor does he work for him.

    Valery Wiseheart
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_valery.png

Director at RIFT and Zahra's direct superior.

  • By-the-Book Cop: She is very stern and focused on the mission. Knowing from the very start of the game that there is a traitor in her organization might have something to do with it.
  • Da Chief: Leader of RIFT and the investigation around Suspect X.
  • Red Herring: She is very stern and has a made a few troubling decisions in the past. But she is neither Suspect X nor does she work for him.
  • Single-Biome Planet: She comes from one completely covered in water.

    Dash Sterling
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_dash.png

Assistant Director at RIFT.

  • The Ace: He was once RIFT's best agent and age has not slowed him down.
  • Badass Bureaucrat: He was once RIFT's The Ace and still got it after years of paperwork.
  • The Commissioner Gordon: He helps you with the Gootopia case as well with V"!!K}~X]'s application at RIFT.
  • Red Herring: A lot of the clues also point towards him but he was present with Zahra Sinclair and Valery Wiseheart when Suspect X's attack on RIFT happened. That is because Rogue Dash was under that mask and together they are the Big Bad.

    Sorgina Delabourde
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_sorgina.png

Director General of RIFT.

  • By-the-Book Cop: She is even stricter than Director Wiseheart.
  • Most Definitely Not a Villain: She actually isn't a villain despite her looks and general rudeness.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Appears to be one at first but she just takes her job very seriously and only wants the best people to join RIFT. Some of her more regrettable choices did lead to the Big Bad setting his plan into motion.
  • Obviously Evil: Her demonic appearance almost got her killed when she became victim of a Witch Hunt after an accidentally travelling to another dimension.
  • Our Demons Are Different: She both looks and acts the part but is just born like that because she was born on a world covered in endless darkness. She is also capable of genuine kindness.
  • Red Herring: She is openly disliked by many other RIFT members and tends to be unhelpful towards Zahra. But she is neither Suspect X nor does she work for him.
  • Single-Biome Planet: She is said to come from a world covered in endless darkness with unstable portals.

    Sam Squatch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_sam.png

Dr. Sam Squatch, Ph.D. is the director of RIFT's Science, PHysics, and Engineering REsearch division (SPHERE).

  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: His kind is rumored to be one of the first to discover dimensional travel, leading to them making brief appearances in other world only to quickly vanish, leaving only footprints behind.
  • Happily Married: If you show him the love letter he mentions that he is happily married to his wife Wendy Goh.
  • Punny Name: Both he and his wife Wendy Goh are named after mythological humanoids.

    Freya Gronnalva
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_freya.png

Expert of lifeforms from different worlds.

  • Animal Lover: Deeply cares for the ecosystem of Gootopia.
  • Co-Dragons: She serves Suspect X alongside Ripjaw and Hancho.
  • Eco-Terrorist: Wanting to protect Gootopia from being mined empty of all of its natural resources she joined Suspect X and started to create bioweapons based on the various forms of slime.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She doesn't want to kill Zahra Sinclair at first and has to be threatened by Suspect X before she decides to use lethal force. Overall she seems to be the most conflicted of Suspect X's minions.
  • Healing Factor: Zahra's healing abilities are based on her research on Gootopia.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: Unlike all the other Co-Dragons she encourages you to hurry if you want to stop the Big Bad during the final level after her second defeat.
  • Our Elves Are Different: According to the website she is a green elf from a world covered in mysterious mists and changing geography that greatly cares about the environment and life. Sadly she takes it too far.

    Sprout Ironbulk
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_sprout.png

Trainer at the RIFT HQ gym.

  • The Big Guy: He dwarfs everybody and has become so big that he can't even leave the gym anymore. He is really happy when the heroine gives him goo with shrinking abilities.
  • Chekhov's Gag: He is worried that he will be struck with his new smaller size at first but is assured that the shrinking goo will eventually wear off. It does wear off during the invasion, leaving him struck in the gym again because he is too big for the door.
  • Justified Tutorial: He gives you the tutorial at the beginning of the game. It is mandatory for Zahra as she will only get new missions if she does regularly train herself.
  • Single-Biome Planet: He comes from a green world where plants evolved into sentient bipeds.

    Helena Lycastia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_helena2.png

Warden of RIFT's prison.

  • Amazon Brigade: This amazon warrior was specifically hired by RIFT to be head of its correctional facility security.
  • Possession Implies Mastery: She not only carries enough weapons for an entire team, she has an incredible knowledge about many weapons.
  • Walking Armory: She carries seven different weapons.
  • The Worf Effect: During the endgame she is overpowered by Suspect X and his army so all Co-Dragons of Suspect X can be freed to take part in the invasion.

    Ada Lovepaws
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_ada.png

Lead Cyberneticist at RIFT.

  • The Internet Is for Cats: Strongly believes this. It helps that she has access to ALL internets of the multiverse.
  • Obviously Evil: Has a surprisingly evil expression from time to time and makes a Suspiciously Specific Denial about everything being under her control but she remains firmly on the side of RIFT.
  • Playful Hacker: She can break into any system, this becomes useful later on.
  • Red Herring: She triggers Hancho's alarm when trying to hack his system and plays a key role in a chapter where RIFT agents are bribed to look the other way. Not only is she not one of the agents being bribed, she has no connection to Suspect X in any form. In fact her security system did prevent their earlier attempt to steal the Metacatalyst.

    Pineapple
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_pineapple.png

RIFT agent famous for undercover missions.

  • The Ace: He is one of RIFT's best agents and did manage to find key evidence against Hancho.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He is one of the weirder characters but he is still very good at his job of gathering information.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: He is a sentient pineapple.
  • Interspecies Romance: He is in love with the human Mrs. Ham. It is actually her legal status that keeps them apart so he runs off with her, being absent during the invasion.
  • Master of Disguise: His disguises look incredibly obvious but are treated as effective in-universe.

    V"!!K}~X
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_v.png

Accidental portal-user who is inspired to join RIFT.

Antagonists

    Suspect X
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_suspect_x.png

The Master Criminal that attacked RIFT and stole from them.

  • Affably Evil: They can be charming and managed to unite several others to their cause. They do seem to feel at least some respect for the heroine before and during the final battle.
  • Ax-Crazy: They are able to mask it well enough but their plan is completely deranged and has already claimed billions of victims.
  • Bad Boss: Flat out tell their minions that they are not expected to defeat Zahra in the final level, merely delay her. They will also kill each and every one of them along themselves once their superweapon detonates.
  • Baddie Flattery: They genuinely compliment Zahra's fighting ability, as long as they still believe they can win the battle.
  • Big Bad: They are the ones who lead the other villains except Rogue Zahra. Even then they are also responsible for Rogue Zahra's Start of Darkness.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: They are working with Dash Sterling to bring down RIFT.
  • Big Bad Friend: Dash Sterling was once close friends with Valery Wiseheart.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Dash Sterling still pretends to be the person he once was.
  • Black Cloak: Part of the disguise which makes their identity hard to point down.
  • The Chessmaster: Manages to steal the very dangerous Metacatalyst at the very beginning from RIFT and despite Zahra's best efforts they manage to pin the blame on the wrong person and almost annihilate all of RIFT during the climax.
  • Collective Identity: They are Dash Sterling allied with an alternate version of himself: Rogue Dash. Also the Stinger shows that there are far more than just one Rogue Dash.
  • Create Your Own Villain: RIFT's Alien Non-Interference Clause drove them over the edge but they became far worse than RIFT ever was.
  • Deceptive Disciple: They are one to Valery Wiseheart.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Rogue Zahra does utterly reject their Freudian Excuse as they have done far worse than the people they want revenge against.
  • The Dreaded: Their minions do fear them.
  • Driven to Villainy: They were driven to their horrible actions by the loss of their beloved son.
  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: They hire man, women, reptiles, robots and slime creatures to bring down RIFT.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: They did very much care for their wife and son. Losing them was their Start of Darkness.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Both they and Rogue Zahra hate RIFT, but Rogue Zahra hates him even more.
  • Fatal Flaw: Wrath; they are just flat out unable to let go of their lust for revenge no matter how many people suffer or die.
  • Gotta Kill Them All: They did destroy multiple inhabited worlds in the past. Their revenge plan against RIFT is to use their super weapon to utterly destroy the Extraverse, obliterating RIFT headquarters and killing every RIFT agent, all of their own army and themselves.
  • Implacable Man: They certainly do not go down easy in the final battle.
  • It's All About Me: Valery Wiseheart does call them out in the ending for having become completely blind towards the suffering of others.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: They want to destroy the entire Extraverse and already destroyed multiple planets just to test their superweapon.
  • Moral Myopia: They do not care how many have to suffer and die so they get their revenge.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: They think that their motivation excuses all of their actions, but Zahra Sinclair, Rogue Zahra and Valery Wiseheart all utterly reject that idea.
  • The Power of Hate: They just utterly refuse to stand down during the final battle. It is reflected in the game by having to empty THREE health bars before they finally are beaten.
  • The Sociopath: While they can pretend to care about others, they have lost that ability a long time ago.
  • The Unfettered: They are horribly uncaring towards absolutely everyone.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: The game is usually bright and doesn't take itself too seriously but they and their past crimes are MUCH darker than anything else in the game.
  • Villain Respect: They do respect Zahra's fighting ability and only expect all three of their Co-Dragons to only slow her down during the final level.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Dash Sterling did manage their facade pretty well and nobody saw their betrayal coming.
  • Villainous Ethics Decay: They had actual ethics once but by now those are completely forgotten.

    Rogue Zahra
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_rogue_zahra.png

An alternate dark version of our heroine.

  • Anti-Villain: She wants to bring down Suspect X but also ALL of RIFT, especially Zahra Sinclair.
  • Amateur Sleuth: Rogue Zahra did investigate Zahra Sinclair very well before the final confrontation, likely to improve her impersonation of her agent counterpart to gain access to RIFT. She also provides the final clues to the identity of Suspect X.
  • The Atoner: She decides during the ending that she will travel the multiverse to find herself and to help others in an attempt to make up for her past actions.
  • Ax-Crazy: By the time she fights Zahra Sinclair she has become unstable to the point of random laughter during the battle. After being defeated and having a talk with the heroine she finally snaps out of it.
  • Berserk Button: Suspect X and RIFT as well as the fate of her world.
  • Break Them by Talking: She is very much able to give Zahra Sinclair a hard time about RIFT's more questionable decisions and the arrest of Skip.
  • Cop Hater: She utterly hates RIFT because of her past.
  • Criminal Doppelgänger: She's a version of the main protagonist that fights against the lawful RIFT.
  • Dark Action Girl: She can kick just as much butt as Zahra Sinclair.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Blames all of RIFT for the actions of one agent. The reason was that she was forced to see her own world being destroyed by Suspect X and his RIFT ally when she was a child. She eventually grows out of it.
  • Evil Doppelgänger: She's an alternate-universe version of the protagonist and must be fought repeatedly, though she claims to not be as evil as Suspect X.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She hates what Suspect X has done to her world and will not allow it to happen again.
  • Evil Makeover: Her clothes and Sinister Shades do make her look much more different from Zahra Sinclair than she actually is. With the right clothes she can easily pass as her counterpart. The unlockable artwork points out that she is even still wearing the same hairclips but on her belt.
  • Evil Twin: She does antagonize you multiple times but unlike all the other villains she does not work for Suspect X. It turns out her world was destroyed by Suspect X as a test of a superweapon, and she saw a glimpse of their RIFT ally, leading her to hate both the agency and Suspect X.
  • Fatal Flaw: Envy towards Zahra Sinclair for still having her own world and being liked by most people. She eventually gets over it once the heroine defeats her and is able to point out what she admires about her counterpart.
  • Friendless Background: She grew up with no friends after Suspect X destroyed her world.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She does envy Zahra Sinclair for her life, her friends and how many people genuinely like her. She even dresses up as the agent to sneak into RIFT for their final showdown. While she also has green eyes, she shares that with the heroine.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Rogue Zahra teams up with Zahra Sinclair in the final fight to defeat Suspect X & his own Rogue self.
  • Impersonating an Officer: She manages to impersonate Zahra Sinclair flawlessly with a quick change of clothes to get past all of RIFT to get close to the agent for their final showdown in the middle of RIFT headquarters.
  • Meaningful Name: Despite Rogue Zahra just being a nickname given by Skip it does describe her well as she is the only antagonist not working for the Big Bad but also having her own agenda.
  • Meaningful Rename: Before the final level Zahra Sinclair drops the "Rogue" out of the name and starts just calling her alternate version "Zahra."
  • Obviously Evil: She clothes do not make her look trustworthy. There is more to her.
  • Rivals Team Up: When Zahra Sinclair starts to run out of time during the final battle against Suspect X and the traitor, she joins the battle alongside her alternate counterpart to even the odds.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Her shades hide her eyes except when she is truly angry.
  • You Are Not Alone: After Zahra Sinclair is cut off from all her friends and is forced to fight Suspect X and the traitor by herself, she joins the battle to aid her counterpart.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Gets increasingly more unstable before the confrontation with the heroine as the combination of her own terrible loss and her Green-Eyed Monster tendencies start to get worse.
  • Villain Has a Point: Zahra Sinclair admits that, while lashing out against all of RIFT is taking it too far, RIFT's Alien Non-Interference Clause has caused a lot of suffering for many people.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Near the end of the game she has the perfect opportunity to do some serious damage to RIFT as she sneaks in while disguised as Zahra Sinclair. Instead she doesn't harm anybody else and goes straight to the heroine. While it leads to a fight, it ends in an understanding between the two.

    Ripjaw
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_ripjaw.png

Reptarrian gang leader and warlord.

  • Arms Dealer: Does sell weapons from across the multiverse to fund his plan.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He is very proud on his power and sees Zahra as harmless. After his second defeat he loses that attitude.
  • Co-Dragons: He serves Suspect X alongside Hancho and Freya Gronnalva.
  • The Conqueror: He took over and now rules Reptarria with an iron fist.
  • Large and in Charge: He is a giant reptarrian, towering over all others. Zahra did expect him to be huge but not THAT huge.
  • Might Makes Right: Strongly believes so and starts to think that it is time to retire after his second defeat.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He genuinely cares for his people and the first thing he did after being arrested was to appeal to RIFT for them to be allowed to move away from their dying world.

    Hancho
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/double_cross_hancho.png

Mafia boss in the Funderdome.

  • Co-Dragons: He serves Suspect X alongside Ripjaw and Freya Gronnalva.
  • Dirty Coward: Once his giant robot is destroyed he reveals himself to be a complete coward.
  • It's All About Me: The Funerdome is full of his signs and statues. His giant robot is also made in his own image.
  • Mecha-Mooks: Rules over a small army of them including robotic ninjas.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: He looks pretty goofy but his crimes include murder and basically the multiverse version of human trafficking.
  • Super Mob Boss: He is the main threat in the Funderdome and, thanks to his bribery of RIFT agents, he is untouchable until you manage to find evidence against him.
  • Very Punchable Man: You even get more Upgradium if you punch him after the boss battle.
  • Villains Want Mercy: He uses his four arms to do two begging poses at once after you beat him.
