    Kazuhito Harumi

Kazuhito Harumi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kazuhitoharumi.jpg
Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese), Blake Shepard (English)
A high school bookworm who loves reading books and novels. He is also an avid fan of Shinobu Akiyama's works. He lived away from his parents and sister so that he could be within walking distance of his favorite bookstore. He was killed during the robbery in the cafe while protecting a customer. Regretting being unable to read Akiyama's latest novel and the desire to live, he was resurrected as a dachshund much to his surprise. He's known as Kuro by the neighborhood in this form.
  • Ascended Fanboy: After dying while protecting his favorite author from a robber, he gets reincarnated as her pet dog. Although, he sees as more of a curse than a blessing because said author is a scissor-wielding borderline psycho.
  • Bookworm: In both his past and current lives, there's nothing that he loves more than reading books.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Kazuhito got shot dead in the head during a robbery.
  • Celibate Hero: Even ignoring the fact that he's now a dog, his lack of interest in anything but books causes him to dismiss Kirihime's advances.
  • Delaying Action: Kazuhito does this for Kirihime in episode 8, buying her some time by distracting the brainwashed staff attacking her until she could sharpen her scissors.
  • Expressive Hair: The tiny bit of hair on Kazuhito's head moves quite a bit.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Kazuhito's human face has his eyes hidden by his hair bangs in his flashbacks.
  • Heroic Bystander: Saves Kirihime from a robber and dies in the process.
  • Ignore the Fanservice: When Kirihime wears nothing but lingerie in front of him, Kazuhito isn't impressed because he isn't attracted to a real woman's body and mocks her flat chest instead.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Kazuhito does seem to be aware of Kirihime's affections, but since books are his only love, he plays stupid and goes for pissing her off instead.
  • Oblivious to Love: Despite Natsuno's increasingly obvious feelings for him (breaking into tangents on such subjects as what people would think if she "had a dog as [her] first"), he never seems to get it. Applies equally well to his sister as well, he doesn't seem to realize that her affection for him goes a little beyond the norm.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kazuhito gets this whenever he says, or even thinks, something he knows will make Kirihime angry.
  • Reincarnated as a Non-Humanoid: He was a high school boy who got killed in the middle of a robbery and resurrected as a dachshund dog.
  • Taught by Experience: Running away and dodging Kirihime's scissors has made him extremely agile.
  • Telepathy: After his reincarnation as a dog, he can only communicate with Kirihime via a telepathic link. For some reason, Suzuna can only hear his thoughts.
  • Tempting Fate: When Kazuhito runs into Sachi singing in the park in episode 11, he tries to quietly leave so as to avoid a repeat of her attacking him back in episode 7. Unfortunately he steps on a stick and breaks it...
  • Turn the Other Cheek: Kazuhito saves his killer because he loved books as much as he did.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: A minor one which is Played for Laughs in episode 8. Kirihime warns Kazuhito not to go peeping on her while she's in the hot springs. He complies, stating he'd rather be reading anyway. A few hours later, she's a little dizzy and is being helped back to her room. He asks her what's wrong, and she gets mad at him for not peeking at her and making her wait so long.
  • What You Are in the Dark: In episode 2, he's given the chance to avenge his own death by pushing his killer off a bridge. To Kirihime's surprise, Kazuhito has no interest in revenge and spares his killer's life, even sympathizing with him for also liking Kirihime's books.

    Kirihime Natsuno

Kirihime Natsuno

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirihimenatsuno.jpg
Voiced by: Marina Inoue (Japanese), Jessica Calvello (English)
A beautiful, yet sadistic scissor-wielding novelist who adopted Kazuhito from a pet store. She writes novels and goes by her pen name as Shinobu Akiyama, whom Kazuhito greatly admires. She is one of those who can hear Kazuhito's thoughts. She harbors feelings for Kazuhito and is easily jealous whenever he's known to be close to another girl. Natsuno is also too conscious regarding her small breasts and is also known to comically find ways to enlarge them and anyone who makes some remark about it usually becomes a victim of her anger. She uses a pair of extremely hard scissors that she has owned since childhood known as Hasajiro.
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Kirihime's scissors can cut through a rocket-propelled grenade. It also cut the cage Kazuhito was in at the pet store after the owner initially refused to sell him to her.
  • Action Girl: She's quite proficient with scissors, which, along with her great physical prowess, makes her a tough fighter.
  • A-Cup Angst: The main reason why Kazuhito is tortured because he keeps snarking at Kirihime's chest. Seeing younger girls with larger breasts also makes her very uncomfortable, such as Hami in the hot springs during episode 8.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's a beautiful, tall, and black-haired young woman who seems distant and detached from people around her most of the time.
  • Badass Longcoat: Kirihime often wears a black longcoat and proficiently wields scissors as a weapon.
  • Battle Aura: Kirihime gives off a red aura when she's feeling bloodthirsty or jealous over Kazuhito being near another woman.
  • Berserk Button: Kirihime is usually vicious, but talking about how flat-chested she is will bring on the full force of her wrath.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She gets easily jealous whenever Kazuhito gets close to another girl.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: Whenever Kirihime is facing off against one opponent, she usually has some difficulty defeating them before finally coming out on top. However, when she's attacked by large groups of people in episodes 8-10, she defeats them all without much trouble.
  • Cute and Psycho: She's a domineering sadist who brings out her scissors at the slightest provocation. There's also some moments where she can act like a normal girl in love with Kazuhito.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She has black hair, dresses all in black, and wields incredibly sharp scissors like a deadly weapon. Despite that, she's a good person at heart.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She has long black hair and pale skin. Combined with her black clothes and habit of threatening Kazuhito with scissors, she gives off a very eerie look.
  • The Empath: Kirihume is very in tune with how people act and feel regarding a particular situation. For example, she was able to correctly deduce Madoka's reasoning for her Yandere sequence.
  • From Roommates to Romance: After Kazuhito gets reincarnated as a dog, Kirihime lets him live with her because she felt guilty after his human self died while protecting her from a robber. Since she knows his thoughts thanks to a telepathic link between them, Kirihime soon develops feelings for Kazuhito
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: She's a quite attractive young woman who always carries scissors with her and knows how to use them.
  • Hime Cut: Kirihime has blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and waist-length straight hair. Her hairstyle and cool behavior gives her a dignified aura.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: She abuses Kazuhito on a regular basis, but if someone else even tries to lay a finger on him, she won't let them get away with it. When Sachi tries to kill him, she says "how dare you attack my dog".
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: She can cut through steel using the dull sides of a pair of scissors.
  • Insult of Endearment: She only calls Kazuhito "Dog" or "Mongrel," but it's used as sort of a normal nickname as they start to get along more.
  • Interspecies Romance: She develops a crush on Kazuhito after he gets reincarnated as a dog.
  • It's All My Fault: Kirihime blames herself for Kazuhito getting killed in episode 2 after tracking down the man who murdered him. However, Kazuhito bears no grudge against the man after finding out he loves to read as well, and tells Kirihime to stop beating herself up over it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her nasty personality, pleasing her readers is Kirihime's top priority. The other priority in her life is to protect Kazuhito from everybody but herself.
  • Love Epiphany: Kirihime starts to develop feelings for Kazuhito in episode 2 after he helps her get over her guilt for him dying trying to protect her. She seems so lovestruck that it takes him repeatedly making fun of her flat chest to bring her back to her senses. Which then causes her to chase after him with her scissors.
  • Loving Bully: She especially enjoys intimidating Kazuhito with her scissors because she has a crush on him.
  • Mistaken for Gay: In episode 8, Madoka mentions there only being one futon in their room at the hot springs. Kazuhito then has an Imagine Spot where Kirihime forces herself on Madoka, only to be beaten up by her for assuming it.
  • Most Writers Are Writers: She's a best-selling novelist.
  • Named Weapons: Her scissors are named Hasajiro.
  • Offhand Backhand: In episode 9, Kazuhito tries to jump at her and she accidentally throws him into the trash can when her hand moves in a subconscious reflex.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Shortly after Kazuhito is thrown at some attackers in episode 9, he passes out. When he wakes up, Kirihime has already defeated the entire group in the time he was unconscious.
  • Parrying Bullets: Exaggerated. Madoka fires a projectile at her from a cannon and Kirihime cuts it in half with her scissors.
  • Pen Name: She writes novels under the name "Shinobu Akiyama."
  • Psycho Knife Nut: She's violent and sadistic, often wielding a pair of scissors like a knife.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Kirihime gives one to Madoka in episode 5, scolding her for doing things her brother would never have approved of.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Downplayed. She's a black-haired, red-eyed woman who wears black clothes, red earrings and a black coat with red accessories. She's definitely domineering and aggressive with sadistic tendencies, but far from evil and villainous.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes and is certainly dangerous when she pulls out her scissors.
  • Revenge: In episode 2, Kirihime tracks down Kazuhito's murderer, and beats him up enough that he falls onto a railing above traffic. She then tells him to finish the man off by pushing him off the railing. Instead Kazuhito pulls the man back, stating that killing him wouldn't bring him back as a human, and would taint his motive for reading, after witnessing the murderer falling in love with reading her books as well. He also tells her to stop blaming herself for his death, as he died trying to protect her when the murderer was threatening to shoot her in the cafe.
  • Running Gag: Someone just making fun of Kirihime's lack of a chest and Kirihime whipping her scissors out of her holster.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She tries to entice Kazuhito by wearing nothing but a Black Bra and Panties in front of him. She gets angry when this fails to impress him, mainly due to her small chest size.
  • Shear Menace: Kirihime's weapon is a pair of scissors she uses as a knife.
  • Shown Their Work: As a matter of principle, Kirihime researches for her books extremely thoroughly, and makes sure to be as accurate as possible. Somewhat bites her on the ass when it's shown her fictional martial arts styles are surprisingly effective, and Harumi's killer is able to weaponize them to great effect.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Kirihime falls for Harumi after he consoles her when it comes to her guilty feelings toward his Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Subliminal Seduction: Kirihime uses this technique on Kazuhito at the end of episode 10 for comedic effect. After reading her latest work, his front paws start moving on their own towards her, despite his attempts to resist it.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Kirihime is normally cool-headed, but she reveals a warm and cute side around Kazuhito on occassion.
  • Survivor Guilt: Kazuhito died protecting her from a robber because she was too busy writing to pay attention to her surroundings. She felt guilty over his death and took him in after finding out he reincarnated as a dog.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Kirihime tries to get Madoka to start calling her onee-san.
  • They Died Because of You: Though Kazuhito is okay being a dog so long as he can read books, several of the other characters certainly blame Kirihime for his death, and attack her directly, or indirectly via subliminal messages.
  • Tsundere: Harsh type. Kirihime switches between giving Kazuhito the cold shoulder and threatening to physically abuse him (and sometimes succeeding). Nevertheless, despite him being a dog, she really does love him, and it's mostly seen in how flustered she gets when her feelings for him are brought up.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Kirihime seems completely oblivious to the criminal while she and Kazuhito are at the cafe. One has to wonder what happened there immediately after he is killed.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Kirihime is protective over Kazuhito and saves him from people trying to hurt him.
  • Yandere: Played for Laughs. She goes back and forth between being lovestruck with Kazuhito and using her scissors to terrorize him.

Madoka is Kazuhito's little sister. She at first, correctly, believes that Kazuhito in his dog form is her brother, but is convinced otherwise by Kirihime after a heated fight. Though she now believes that Kazuhito's dog form isn't her brother, she still calls him "Kazu-nii."
