    Amanar
A sorcerer who sacrifices the souls of others to the god-demon Morath-Amanee.

    The Bone Woman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bone_woman.JPG

A mysterious and sinister crone with magical powers, she turned Janissa into her unquestioning enforcer and ordered her to serve as bodyguard to Kalanthes.

  • Deal with the Devil: She offers her protection to Conan from Thoth-Amon. Him being Genre Savvy and knowing what happened to Janissa, he refuses.
  • Evil Mentor: To Janissa. The way she turned an innocent girl into a cold assassin was despicable.
  • Evil Old Folks: While her motives for protecting Kalanthes and Conan are mysterious, there is no denying that this crone is evil.
  • Instrument of Murder: Instead of some wand or staff, she uses a flute to canalize her magic in order to raise and control zombies or to manipulate an Eldritch Abomination such as Nazu.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She faked her death at Janissa's hands and then instilled her desire to start a slave liberating crusade in her former student by assuming the form of a female slave. This was all a ploy to direct her towards the Tower of Silence, massacre the Priests of Asura and then summon a Great Old One.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: She is very diminutive in size. Think of an evil Yoda.
  • Off with Her Head!: How Janissa kills her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has one when Conan kills Nazu via the massive chime in the tower.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: That is pretty much how she is known for.
  • Skeletons in the Coat Closet: Her robes are adorned with several little bones, giving meaning to her name.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Has a slight one when Conan tells her to go to hell.
  • Wicked Witch: She got the look down in the part, except for the pointed hat.

    Captain Bor'Aqh Sharaq
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2620737_bor_aqh_sharaq_savage_sword_92_01.jpg

Created for the Marvel-branded Savage Sword of Conan comics, Sharaq was a ruthless Barachan pirate member who crossed swords with Conan and ended up losing a hand and being left for death, but survived and vowed revenge on the Cimmerian at any cost.

  • Artificial Limbs / Swiss-Army Appendage: His prosthetic arm that can be fitted with a sword, an axe or a spring-powered throwing iron.
  • Badass Normal: Most of Conan's enemies were dark wizards, Sharaq only got a metal arm with detachable blades and a very dark determination.
  • Berserk Button: Conan the Cimmerian is the biggest one for him, but the prospect of any one else killing him but Sharaq himself sends him in a frenzy.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Has a tendency to kill people who help him out.
  • Determinator: Despite being a villain, he is more of this trope than an Implacable Man, since he keeps coming back through sheer force of will.
  • Escaped from Hell: In the second confrontation with Conan, Sharaq was thrown into a sacrificial pit and dragged to a infernal dimension by the very hands of a demon-god. He was forced to serve said demon-god, who created a device to cross over into the mortal plane, but Sharaq waited for his master to sleep long enough to steal the device and go back home.
  • Eye Scream: His right eye was gouged out under torture to reveal where Conan is. He refused even more to tell his captors since only he is allowed to kill the Cimmerian himself.
  • Handicapped Badass: Losing his sword hand in a duel with Conan and later an eye to Zingarans have only made him more dangerous
  • Human Popsicle: His ultimate fate is being frozen in place.
  • Joker Immunity: He survived things that any other person would have died from: being thrown off a tower, dragged to another dimension, turned into a statue. It got to the point even the writers were sick of him.
  • Kick the Dog: Let's see: killing an elderly couple who saved him after his escape from the Zingarans, murdering the blacksmith who forged his mask and metal arm, raping a young woman right after he killed her lover, testing the rapid aging dust on a prostitute, holding an entire family hostage... The list is very long.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: He vowed by the gods that he would take Conan's life himself and not even under pain of torture he would reveal his location.
  • The Power of Hate: His hate for Conan keeps him alive.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: He distinctly spoke this manner in this introduction. This comes to bite him in the ass big time when a couple of Zingaran sailors find him marooned in an isle and he pretends he is just a Zingara fisherman, but his accent completely gives him away and the others recognize him as Captain Sharaq and promptly arrest him.
  • Taken for Granite: A cat-like monster turned him into a gem statue, though he managed to recover.

    Conn
First appearing in The Witch of the Mists, he is the firstborn son of Conan and Zenobia.
  • Distressed Dude: In The Witch of the Mists, he is kidnapped by the Hyperboreans, who are allied with Thoth-Amon.
  • Extremely Protective Child: In Red Moon of Zembabwei and Shadows in the Skull, he kills King Nenaunir and Thoth-Amon respectively to save his father's life.
  • Non-Protagonist Resolver: In Shadows of the Skull, He is the one who kills the longtime villain Thoth-Amon, not his father Conan.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Conn resembles his father Conan.
  • Sunk Cost Fallacy: After getting lost hunting after a white stag, Conn expects to be punished by his father for wandering to far, but continues hunting the stag in the hopes that his success would impress Conan enough to dampen his anger.

    Diana
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/022_1.jpg

A character from an untitled Howard story that was never finished during his lifetime and was published under the name A Snout in the Dark. She was a Nemedian slave caught up in the court intrigue of the Kushite city of Shumballa. Diana receives a substantially bigger role in the comics; she was a Brytunnian noblewoman who accompanied her sister Natala and her brother-in-law in search of a treasure when they were attacked by pirates in service to Thoth-Amon. They tortured Natala's husband to death, while the sisters were sold to slavery. However, they were the two people who know where the treasure is currently located.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Receives a much bigger role in the comics.
  • Attempted Rape: In the comics, Eamon the Flayed tries forcing himself on her, but she fights him off and ends up killing him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: She briefly reunites with her sister, but they go separate ways when Natala decides to accompany Conan and Diana joins Abit.
  • Broken Bird: Diana and her sister were taken as slaves and were separated when she was sent to a Royal Harem. She becomes even more broken following her ordeal in Conan the Avenger.
  • Cute Mute: In the comics, after being mutilated by Tanada.
  • Damsel in Distress: In her backstory and her current state.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: She undergoes a lot of trauma in her backstory and during the comic's storyline, but her ultimate fate is ascending to the throne of Shumballa as Abit's queen after he is chosen to be their new monarch.
  • Made a Slave: Just like Natala, she was sold to slavery by Amon's minions. However while Natala became merely a menial worker, Diana had the even more unfortunate fate of being forced into a harem.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In the Conan the Avenger comics, she is Natala's sister whereas in the original books there was no such indication they were related.
  • Sex Slave: To the King of Shumballa.
  • Tongue Trauma: Her tongue is torn out by the king's sister Tanada because Diana was given as a gift by her political rival Thuthmes to the king to manipulate him.

    Diviatix

A Pictland druid who aids Conan against Thoth-Amon during Black Sphinx of Nebthu.

  • Faux Affably Evil: He behaves with mock politeness when taunting Conan.
Duke Feng: Forgive the ruse, O noble savage! It was needful that this person concoct some tale to appeal to your primitive lust for gold, in order to allure you hither alone.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He is killed by the very monster he planned to kill Conan with.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He manages to lure Conan into a deadly trap with false promises of treasure.

    Duke Villagro
Appearing in Conan the Buccaneer, Villagro is a Zingaran nobleman who seeks to usurps the throne of Zingara from King Ferdrugo.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He is a Duke who is plotting against his king.
  • Lean and Mean: The narration of Conan the Buccaneer describes him as lean and elegant.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Throughout most of the story, he relies on Black Zarono, Menkara, and Thoth-Amon to do the heavy-lifting for him. However, once Thoth-Amon betrays him, Villagro steals the Cobra Crown and dons it himself, giving him enough magical power to pose a serious challenge to Thoth-Amon.

    Janissa the Widowmaker
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4688641_8528488190_4740a.jpg

Introduced in the Dark Horse comics, Janissa was originally a Zingaran lady turned into a warrior woman who fought side by side with Conan.

  • Amazon Brigade: By the time she is reintroduced in Conan the Avenger comics, she is leading an all-female warband of ex-slaves she had freed and trained to fight.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: She wanted to get away from her controlling father and not be forced into an Arranged Marriage, but unfortunately she sought the Bone Woman of all people to turn her into a fighter.
  • Character Development: Was rather coarse and rude when she first met Conan; by the time they meet again she's far more calm and thoughtful, and even respects Conan for indirectly inspiring her to finally stand up to the Bone Woman.
  • Dark Action Girl: A brutal and ruthless fighter who served as an assassin for her Evil Mentor.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Conan is utterly shocked after hearing her backstory, but she brushes off any attempt of sympathy from him.
  • The Dragon: To the Bone Woman, originally.
  • Dual Wielding: Her favored weapons are two curved swords.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: With Conan when they meet in Avengers.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: She sports a large one in the left side of her face. Not very a very disfiguring one, mind you.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Introduced as an Anti-Villain, she rebels against her Evil Mentor and starts fighting for a noble cause.
  • Lady of War: Despite not being lady-like, her movements are surprisingly graceful and elegant.
  • Rape as Backstory: As part of her training, Janissa had been repeatedly raped by demons every night until she could find a way to fight them off.
  • Slave Liberation: After turning away from the Bone Woman's service, she embarks on a new quest to free any woman she can find, build an army and eventually take on Shem and Turan, the biggest slave-trades in Hyboria - its something that Conan definitely approves.
  • Stripperiffic: Her outfit bares her stomach and even features some Underboobs
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Is far more pleasant when Conan meets her in the Akrel Oasis; they even part on amicable terms.
  • Training from Hell: The Bone Woman trapped Janissa in a cave and summoned demons to attack her every night. If they overpowered her, they would beat and rape Janissa. The Bone Woman then proceeded to augment her strength with magic and advised her on battle tactics, until Janissa grew so deadly with the blade that she managed to slay the monsters for a month. Then the Bone Woman implies they were manifestations of her own mind.

    Juma
Introduced in The City of Skulls Juma was Conan's comrade during his as a mercenary for King Yildiz of Turan.
  • Birds of a Feather: He and Conan, who has much in common, namely their impressive heights and their status as outsiders, quickly became good friends when they met as mercenaries for Turan.
  • Made a Slave: He was kidnapped and sold into slavery when he was a child., and in The City of Skulls, he is enslaved once again the the Meruvians.

    Kalanthes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kalanthes.JPG
High priest of Ibis, the peaceful Stygian god of knowledge. He is one of the few sympathetic magic users in this setting.
  • Animal Motifs: The ibis bird, obviously. Kalanthes wore at some point a feathered robe resembling his god.
  • The Archmage: He commands a powerful will and magic that arguably rivals any other soul on the continent.
  • Ascended Extra: In Howard's tales, he was just a guy Thoth was trying to kill.
  • Big Good: In Age of Conan, he is the primary-quest giver and mentor figure to player characters.
  • Cool Old Guy: Kalanthes is supposedly centuries old according to Kurt Busiek.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: The main reason he failed to stop Thoth's rise to power; he didn't want to believe his friend was evil until it became so obvious it couldn't be ignored.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: A humble and pleasant Cool Old Guy and priest of the Stygian god of knowledge.
  • The Heretic: Ever since Thoth-Amon usurped power in Stygia and made Set its mainstream deity, the priests of Ibis were declared heretical and driven out from their country.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Conan. Kalanthes is centuries older than Conan yet he and Conan view the other with respect (in fact there's one instance when Conan is willing to do something he otherwise wouldn't because Kalanthes is the one who asked.)
  • Last of His Kind: The last still living priest of Ibis.
  • Odd Friendship: Its hard to imagine someone like Conan being friends with a Stygian sorcerer.
  • White Magic: Unusual in Hyboria where most Magic Is Evil. Justified since Ibis is his patron god rather than Set.

    King Nenaunir
King Nenaunir is the ruler of Zembabwei and an ally of Thoth-Amon.

    Kulan Gath
From the Marvel Comics, he is a power-hungry sorcerer who has been the enemy of Conan, Red Sonja, Spider-Man and the Avengers. He is recently the main antagonist of the "Savage Avengers" comics.
  • Back from the Dead: He is resurrected by Armati following his death at the hands of Shuma-Gorath.

  • Unholy Matrimony: With both Vammatar and Armati.

    Louhi
Appearing in The Witch of the Mists Louhi is a witch who kidnaps Conan's son Conn.

A god-demon known as the "Eater of Souls." He imprisoned by Set beneath the ruins of Pteion the Accursed until he was discovered by the Evil Sorcerer Amanar.
  • Eldritch Abomination: He is a god-demon who appears as a serpentine creature coalescing from mist.
Conan the Invincible: In the mists, from the mists, a shape coalesced. The Ophirian's eyes bulged in silence-stricken terror. The woman screamed into her gag. The golden head that reared above them in the swirling vapors—neither quite serpent or lizard—was surrounded by a halo of a dozen tentacles longer than a man. The serpentine, golden-scaled body stretched back into the darkness, on beyond the reach of eye to see or mind to know. A bifurcate tongue flickered between fangs, and eyes holding the flames of all the furnaces that ever were regarded Amanar,
  • Evil Versus Evil: He is an enemy of Set, another malevolent being.
  • Soul Eating: He devourers the Souls of his victims. His epithet is even "Eater of Souls".

    Oshmaan the Executioner
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oshmaan.jpg

A one-shot villain from Savage Sword who stands out for being one of the vilest enemies that Conan had fought against. Oshmaan is a Hyrkanian warlord in service to Turan who deserts to create his own horde, the Sons of the White Wolf, who aim to create their own empire.

  • Appropriated Appelation: Lady Alondra called him a "bloody executioner" for killing her husband, but Oshmaan like the title so much he took it as his nom de guerre.
  • Dangerous Deserter: He was once a Hyrkanian mercenary employed by the Turanians until he grew sick of fighting their wars against his own people and went rogue.
  • Dark Messiah: He adopt the worship of White Wolf, an Hyrkanian pagan deity before the Great Cataclysm and they adopted Tarim and Erlik as gods, and uses it as a rallying banner to unite his army.
  • Dirty Coward: After his men are defeated by Conan's nomadic allies, he tries to flee and gloats he will take the Cimmerian's head to the King of Turan so he can rejoin the nation he betrayed.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Tries to claim Alondra for himself as the first woman of his harem.
  • Rape, Pillage, and Burn: His modus operandi, starting by pillaging the innocent city of Djebal and slaughtering the entire population except for the young and attractive women, who are made Breeding Slaves for him and his soldiers.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: While the setting as a whole isn't very friendly to women to begin with, Oshmaan manages to appall others by treating women as breeding stock with the sole purpose of creating a Master Race so he can take over all of Hyboria.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He becomes completely insane when his forces are butchered by Conan's desert allies.
  • Would Hit a Girl: As if his treatment of women in general wasn't bad enough, he mistreats Alondra and threatens to whip her if she continues to spur his advances. At the climax of his story, him and his men butcher the harem prisoners for no reason but to spite Conan's allies.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He has no compunction about putting even babes to the sword.

    The Prince
Exclusive to the Dark Horse comics, he belongs to a mighty eastern empire in the distant future from Conan's time that had conquered the land that used to be Hyboria. He was sent on a mission to catalog the land's history and comes across the Nemedian Chronicles narrating his life. He is the prince whom the opening narration ("Know o Prince") refers to.
  • Audience Surrogate: The Prince's role is to have someone narrate the story to the audience through him.
  • Framing Device: Conan's accounts are narrated to him by Wazir.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Oh yes. The Prince expresses both fascination and admiration for Conan's legend and quickly becomes his fanboy, if his excitement at hearing his stories is any indication.
  • No Name Given: His name is never said in the story.
  • Non-Specifically Foreign: Even though he looks fairly Arabic and is mentioned to have come from the vague East, his place of origin is not named in the comic.
  • The Unfavorite: Its stated that he has no love for his father and the feeling is mutual, since the Prince suspects his father will try to have him killed at some point.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He hasn't appeared in any new comics ever since Sorrow of Akivasha in 2009.

    Set
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/set_1.jpg

The patron deity of Thoth-Amon, much like his servant he only appeared sparingly in the original books. He is most certainly a bigger threat in the comics, adaptations and spin-off media and serves as the Greater-Scope Villain for the Conan mythos.

  • Animalistic Abomination: A gigantic, horrifically powerful Hydra-like entity that resides over its own dimension, and that's not touching on the fact that he's an Elder God.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Mitra and Ibis:
    • Set himself refers to Mitra as the "Mightiest of my rivals" in Conan the Rebel.

  • Canon Immigrant: Set migrated into the Marvel Universe in the pages of Namor the Sub-Mariner.

  • Evil Versus Evil: One of his enemies is another malevolent god known as Morath-Aminee.
  • God of Evil: There is no shortage of evil deities or monsters worshiped as such in this world, but Set is probably the biggest and most powerful of them all.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: To the entire Conan mythos since he is the source of most of its supernatural evil and Conan regularly fights against his followers, but is unable to put an end to him permanently. His followers include the villains Thoth-Amon (A recurring Big Bad who serves as Conan's Arch-Enemy), Thulsa Doom (A recurring villain for Conan in the Marvel Universe), Xaltotun (The Big Bad of The Hour of the Dragon), Thulandra Thuu (The Big Bad of Conan the Liberator), Tsotha-lanti (The Big Bad of The Scarlet Citadel), and King Nenaunir (The Big Bad of Red Moon of Zembabwei).
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: When Set is summoned by Nenaunir to devour Conan's soul, Conan is unable to overcome him. All he can do is survive long enough for Conn to kill Nenaunir to undo the summoning.
  • Human Sacrifice: He constantly demands it from his followers in order to gain access to his favor and his dark powers.
  • Monster Progenitor: To the Serpent-Men as well as several snake like monstrosities.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: According to Red Moon of Zembabwei, Set "knew that it would in time destroy the earth and quench the fires of the very sun."
  • Religion of Evil: Set is the Top God in the Stygian pantheon thanks to Thoth-Amon culling anyone who didn't worship his deity.
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: From a Conan villain to a wide Marvel threat that could easily take on the likes of The Mighty Thor and Doctor Strange.
  • The Theocracy: Stygia, like any kingdom that accepts Set as their patron god, turns into a theocracy where his sinister cult run the place using fear to keep its people in line.
  • You Have Failed Me: He threatens Thoth-Amon with this in Conan and the Grim Grey God.

You speak the very truth, save that you have the characters reversed.
