Characters / Bastard 1988 Dark Schneider And The Four Divine Kings

Go To

A long time ago, the legendary wizard Dark Schneider and his four disciples known as the Four Divine Kings, built a massive army known as the Dark Rebel Armies with the goal of world domination, waging war against the four great kingdoms in the process.

During the invasion of the kingdom of Meta-llicana, Dark Schneider seemingly perished in battle, leaving the Dark Rebel Army without a leader and thus lead to the disbandment of the Four Kings. 15 years later, "Prophet of the Underworld" Abigail, one of the Four Kings, reformed the group and the army in hopes of conquering the world once again. This time, by breaking the four seals used to seal the God of Destruction Anthrasax, they plan to use her power to destroy civilization and rebuild it as a society where magic rules over all.

The extremely handsome protagonist! An invincible demon! Dark Schneider is a legendary wizard who has strengthened his powers by reincarnating himself for over 400 years. After the great war, a seal was used on him once he transmigrated his soul into a baby, but he was revived 15 years later. He’s a pompous and arrogant womanizer who answers to no one... except Yoko.

Named after the founder of Accept and U.D.O. lead vocalist Udo Dirkschneider.

  • The Ace: Handsome ladykiller, a Showy Invincible Hero, and the The Archmage. Yep, he counts and he knows it.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Nei calls him "Darsch". Likewise, he calls her "Arshe" in return. Yoko herself calls him "Lucien", the boy whose body he inhabits.
  • The Archmage: His large and varied arsenal of spells and nigh unmatched power makes him fit this in spades.
  • Artificial Human: He was created by the Ten Wise Men of Europa as the Dragon Knight's pilot to battle Anthrasax, his soul being a fragment of Lucifer.
  • Black Magic: His preferred type of magic, fitting for a wizard as dangerous as him.
  • Came Back Wrong: To most of the Four Divine Kings, Dark Schneider had seemed to have gone incredibly soft, though it dawns on them it likely has something to do with the body of the boy he's inhabiting. One can only guess as to how much of a horny hell raiser D.S. was during those 15 years before his defeat and sealing compared to now.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: It's a rare moment where D.S will not make a pass or perverted comment at a female in his presence, both allies AND opponents, and No Sense of Personal Space is fully at work if he takes interest in a girl. Still, sexual abusers who make advances towards his female companions will get clobbered in the face before they get to do anything and all of his partners are reciprocating/consenting to bedding him.
  • Cool Sword: Wields the Fire Sword, originally Efreet, a demon god of the Fire Elemental Plane. Those who can defeat Efreet will be his master and thus the only one who can wield his sword form. D.S. defeats him during his raid on Gara's temple.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Very pronounced canine teeth, as befitting of a trickster like Dark Schneider.
  • Evil Laugh: Is never seen without it.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Has been stripped naked during battle, which does not impede him in anyway.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Dark Schneider's summoning is to be treated as a last resort Hail Mary for the worst situations. At the start of the Manga, Meta-llicana is on the verge of defeat during a siege, forcing the young priestess Yoko to draw Dark Schneider out from her childhood friend Lucien with her virgin kiss. Little guarantees that Dark Schneider won't just turn his sorcery to blast Meta-llicana off the map himself. Nothing save for Lucien's own feelings of love for Yoko, which in turn may have caused Dark Schneider to hold feelings of his own for Yoko.
  • Harem Seeker: Not at all shy about saying so. It's one of his stated end goals.
    • Unsurprisingly, he also used to have a very massive one before being sealed, much to his current lovers' chagrin.
  • Heel–Face Reincarnation: Schneider was reincarnated as an innocent boy. A kiss from a virgin allows Schneider to take over.
  • Heroic Build: Your average sorcerer wouldn't be packing the impressive physique Dark Schneider is packing. But of course, Dark Schneider is no average man.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: One of the earliest example in shounen manga, and boy is Darsch proud of this! A great majority of his antics are only as funny as they are because he does the kind of actions expected of a Card-Carrying Villain while being the "hero of the story", thus crossing the line twice.
  • Hunk: 192 cm (6'3) tall and as his numerous nude scenes show, he is totally ripped. Yep, he definitely counts.
  • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: Any female, virgin or wench melts like butter on a hot skillet if they so much as get manhandled by him. Just ask Princess Sheila, who caught a nice ride off D.S.'s shoulders in a fireman's carry.
  • Immortal Immaturity: He's been alive for hundreds of years and is virtually indestructible. He also has the personality of a horny frat boy.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his narcissism and general selfishness, Dark Schneider will usually do the right thing in the end.
  • Large and in Charge: Previous Evil Overlord who is 192cm(6'3.6) tall.
  • Large Ham: Picture Shawn Michaels playing Dungeons and Dragons and you have a pretty good idea of the kind of guy Dark Schneider is.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Very fast, hard to put down, and hits like a tank with either brute strength or his magic.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: The guy near-constantly thinks with his dick, and his various horny misadventures are always played for comedy.
  • Love Redeems: Perhaps? Nothing really seems to have stopped Dark Schneider's thirst for conquest in a bid to make every single woman on earth a part of his harem. But if nothing else, ever since his melding with Lucien and frequent unsealings he's come to know The Power of Friendship and The Power of Love in some form considering the loyalty he appears to show Yoko, her loved ones, and the few members of the Dark Rebel Army he chooses to spare and allow to join his side.
  • Manchild: The guy seems to be driven by his Id a majority of the time. And with nearly enough power to treat his surroundings as his own personal sandbox and ability to get what he wants when he wants it, who could blame him?
  • Medium Awareness: Which he likes to incorporate into his trash talk.
Dark Schneider: Two chapters for you?? Our readers are running for the exits!!
  • Metal Scream: The 2022 ONA notably gave Dark Schneider this whenever he screams, thanks to Kisho Taniyama being the vocalist for the rock band GRANRODEO.
  • Mr. Fanservice: In nearly every battle his clothes ended up destroyed, leaving him naked and showcase his well-toned body. And he doesn't seem to mind.
  • Mystical White Hair: A 400 year old powerful wizard with white hair.
  • Naked First Impression: Transforms from the body of Lucien into a nude cackling white haired Adonis. Please have a moment of silence to mourn Yoko's poor virgin eyes.
  • Nominal Hero: His fight against the Dark Rebel Armies comes from the belief he should be the one to conquer the world, not them. At the start of the story he even considers putting this afair aside to get revenge for the seal place on him by Meta-llicana. He gets slightly better later on as he gets to care for and show loyalty to his companions - albeit while being just as arrogant and power-hungry as ever.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: At best, he'll hoist you up off the floor when you least expect it. If you really get his attention, you'll wind up questioning the concept of foreplay as you know it.
  • Not in the Face!: Mark Dark Schneider in his handsome face in any capacity and you are goddamned dead.
  • Other Me Annoys Me: Dark Schneider's thoughts on Lucifer.
  • Out of Focus: He's notably absent in the early parts of Hell's Requiem arc, thanks to Yoko being unable to break the seal inside of Lucien for two years. He only made his proper appearance in the latter half of the arc, which the story treats as a major event.
  • Parental Substitute: Was this to Arshes and Kall-Su.
  • Playing with Fire: Fitting his explosive personality, fire magic is one of his preffered element.
  • Really 700 Years Old: 400 years old, to be specific.
  • Really Gets Around:
Gara:" This is Dark Schneider we're talking about. The incarnation of lust! How many women do you think he's had in his lifetime?
    Yoko: "Um... About 10?"
Gara: "Pffft! Ha ha ha ha!! He's like 400 years old! Try 200 to 300!"
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Beautiful!:
    • Wanting to get to the bottom of Dark Schneider seemingly being able to break out of Lucien's hold through sheer force of will, Grand Priest Geo asks the old crone seer who assisted him in sealing Dark Schneider 15 years ago to troubleshoot the seal. It is indeed working as intended. The only explanation is that Ino Mata, the divine goddess of love and beauty, may have been swayed by Dark Schneider. and even an evil, black hearted bastard like him may have slowly grown to know love in his heart. Geo can only stifle laughter at such a clichéd answer.
    • Also is the reveal that Lucien is the reincarnation of Lucifer and subconsciously attempts to fully absorb D.S., a sentiment shared by nine of Ten Wise Men of Europa and Satan. But D.S. outright refuses to be absorbed.
  • Showy Invincible Hero: Is well aware of it, and boy does he revel in it!
  • Shock and Awe: He's the one who taught Nei how to control lightning.
  • Slasher Smile: Grins like a wolf, with the hunger to match.
  • Smug Super: Is not at all shy about bragging about his looks and prowess, and he can back every one of his claims up.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Manages to invoke this trope for the mother of all humblebrags.
Dark Schneider: "Why am I so freaking strong?? So strong, and so incomparably beautiful!! Tell me, gods! Why do you place such a heavy burden on my shoulders??"
  • Sprouting Ears: Occasionally sprouts a dog's ears and tail when he's excited, especially when Yoko is around. This is a trait passed down from Lucien.
  • Tuckerization: Named after the founder of Accept and U.D.O. lead vocalist Udo Dirkschneider.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: The first thing he usually does after transforming from Lucien is to slip into some new threads from seemingly out of nowhere. In the 2022 anime, he conjures up some through a low level spell instead.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: One of the earliest protagonist examples in manga. He has silvery white hair and has no qualms about announcing his intention to murder the priest who sealed him, and take over the world.

    "Thunder Empress" Arshes Nei

Voiced by: Rei Sakuma (1992 OVA), Mami Koyama (Drama CD, episodes 1–3), Yōko Hikasa (2022 ONA), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (OVA, English dub), Wendee Lee (2022 ONA, English dub), Marysol Lobo (Latin American Spanish, 2022 ONA), Pamela Mendoza (Latin American Spanish, 2022 ONA, young)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nei_stand.png
A half-elf born to a human and Dark Elf. Known as the “Thunder Empress,” she is a magic swordsman who casts lightning spells. A war orphan picked up by Dark Schneider, she was once like his daughter and lover, but now she is an adversary, being one of the Four Divine Kings of the Dark Rebel Armies.

Named after Earthshaker, as in the Japanese metal band.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Dark Schneider calls her "Arshe". Likewise, she calls him "Darsch" in return.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Dark skin, dark haired, and presents herself as The Stoic for the most part.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She was clearly not happy with Dark Schneider's womanizing, citing the large harem he had before his imprisonment as one of her many gripes with him in the present day.
  • Cool Sword: The Raijin-Ken, which can assume the form of demon god Nue of Wind Elemental Plane, who commands lightning and storm.
  • Dark Action Girl: Zig-Zagged. She certainly fits the "Action Girl" part of the trope, being a powerful sorcerer and swordfighter that gives Dark Schneider his toughest fight yet at the point she's fought in the story and leaves Gara beaten up even after she had Raijin-Ken broken, but the "Dark" part is complicated: While she follows the Dark Rebel Armies, she only does so reluctantly, and between the Fantastic Racism of her childhood and her dream of creating a "Sorcerer's Kingdom" of equality she comes off as more of a Well-Intentioned Extremist at worst.
    • Action Girl: Graduates into this after D.S rescues her from the Accused spell and she joins up with the rest of his companions in Meta-llicana.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: Has green eyes, befitting how she has power over Lightning and Wind.
  • Fantastic Racism: She was subjected to this due to her half-blood. Dark Schneider is the only one who truly cares for her. She believes in Kall-Su's dream of establishing "Sorcerer's Kingdom", a utopia ruled by magic where everyone is equal, regardless of race.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Suffered this in her youth, which motivates her desire to create the Sorcerer's Kingdom where one's race would be considered a non-issue.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Born with elf and human blood.
  • Love Hurts: Nevermind the angst that comes from being romantically involved with her protector and father figure who's also cultivating a harem on the side, but as it turns out, Abigail has marked Arshes with the Cursed Nail of the Accused, which requires the blood of Dark Schneider's beating heart in order to break. Having to use Darsch's womanizing as her reasoning and motivation to try and kill him herself while still being unable to reconcile her own feelings, Arshes is very much a woman at war with herself.
  • Magic Knight: Arshes is a Master Swordswoman, as well as a powerful magician in her own right.
  • Our Elves Are Different: One of the earliest example of a dark elf in manga.
  • Shock and Awe: There's a reason why she's known to many as "Thunder Empress". She learned it through D.S. himself.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female member of the Four Divine Kings.
  • Squee: Hearing Darsh brag, boast, trash talk and more or less cut promos on his foes ala pro wrestling elicits this reaction from Arshes.
  • Wife Husbandry: Dark Schneider adopted Nei and then pursues a sexual relationship with her once she comes of age. (Of course, Dark Schneider isn't exactly meant to be a paragon of moral behavior...) Comes off as far-less squick since, being a Dark Fantasy setting, they're both pretty much immortal by definition (one being a demi-deific sorcerer, the other being a half-blood dark elf) - at the very least, they each have potential lifespans that reach well into multiple millennia, so the years matter less.

    "Ninja Master" Gara

Voiced by: Tesshō Genda (1992 OVA), Hiroki Yasumoto (2022 ONA), Steve Blum (OVA, English dub), Aaron LaPlante (2022 ONA, English dub), Oscar Flores (Latin American Spanish, 2022 ONA)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gara_stand.png
One of the Four Divine Kings of the Dark Rebel Armies. Gara is a ninja master who wields the Murasame Blade and leads an army of thousands of dark ninjas. Though tough and free-spirited, he is manly and takes good care of others.

Named after the co-founders of British metal band Raven, brothers John and Mark Gallagher

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Takes Yoko's Pervert Revenge Mode bouts in good humor.
  • Affably Evil: Pretty jovial for a deadly ninja.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Gets an entire episode dedicated to showing how badass he is in the 2022 ONA, having to fight Arshes Nei in Dark Schneider's absence.
  • Assassin Outclassin': How he met and joined Dark Schneider, where he attempted to assassinate the immortal wizard only to join him after failing.
  • The Beast Master: Has his share of creatures under his command, from a Wyvern, to Lars, a baby dragon, to slime which he utilizes for humiliation rituals for the purposes of torture.
  • BFS: His sword Murasame is a nodachi that's about as long as he is tall.
  • The Big Guy: Serving as this role amongst Dark Schneider's cohorts.
  • Blood Knight: Gaara loves a good fight, especially against tougher opponents. In fact, this passion for fighting is what got D.S. to recruit him in the first place.
  • Cool Sword: His Murasame Blade.
  • Combat Commentator: Not him but the Ninja Mooks under his command.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Joined Dark Schneider after being defeated by him following a failed assassination attempt.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite subjecting Yoko to that little striptease torture of his, Yoko holds no animosity towards Gara.
Yoko: Gara may be a pervert, but he's not a badguy.
  • Expy: On the surface, he is like a proto [[Manga/Berserk Guts]]. A tall, muscular and ruggedly handsome warrior with a BFS and a rocky relationship with a white haired Pretty Boy.
  • Fuuma Shuriken: He uses this to fend off hordes of goblins as they were attacking Meta-llicana Castle.
  • Groin Attack: Not 4 words into his introducing himself to Yoko does he receive a kick to the crotch. He shrugs it off surprisingly fast.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Gara is anything but stealthy. Not only is he a 7'7, 320lbs man, but he also throws shurikens the size of an aircraft tire and wields Murasame Blade, a legendary 2-metre-long katana. He also has a knack for making long, drawn out speeches before a fight (so drawn out his allies don't even wait for him to finish and attack their opponent before he's done). His Blood Knight mentality certainly did not help.
  • Hunk: He's muscular, tall, and quite the looker.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Ponders going through with it to Yoko more than once upon capturing her. The worst he ends up doing is siccing his pet slime on her as an interrogation method while he's attempting to get to the bottom of Dark Schneider's revival.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: Prior to becoming one of the Four Divine Kings, Gara was a ninja mercenary working under orders from a king to kill Dark Schneider. After witnessing firsthand what this wizard is capable of and learning about his mindset, Gara disregard his mission and joins him right then and there.
  • It Amused Me: Gara does whatever amuses him the most. He plainly tells Arshes that he doesn't believe in whatever fake utopia the Divine Kings think they are fighting for and admits that he only switched to Dark Schneider's side because it was fun for him.
  • Master Swordsman: Gara is the best swordsman among the Four Divine Kings next to Arshes.
  • Might Makes Right: He's a firm believer in this. Since childhood, his dream is to become the strongest ninja alive, and Dark Schneider's pursuit of power fascinates him enough that he agreed to join him as part of the Dark Rebel Armies.
  • Mook: Each of the Four Divine Kings commands their own set of army. In Gara's case, he leads the Dark Ninja Army, which consists of loyal soldiers who provides commentary on the battles they happen to be witnessing.
  • Ninja: Gara has all the traits of a classic ninja in fiction; nimble and fast, wears black clothing, used shuriken and kunai in addition to his sword, and is able to use ninjutsu techniques such as creating clones. This makes him unique amongst the Four Divine Kings, who are predominantly sorcerers.
  • Perpetual Smiler: The most jovial of the Four Divine Kings by far.
  • Post-Rape Taunt: Tries to get under Dark Schneider's skin by bluffing and very colorfully implying that he rendered Yoko into used goods. Rather than demotivate or throw D.S. off his game, he royally pisses him off enough to gain a Heroic Second Wind.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: As a 230cm (7'7) tall and muscular Hunk he is this without a doubt.
  • Tough Spikes and Studs: Gara is a powerful and muscular swordsman with spiked pauldrons.

    "Frost Wizard" Kall-Su

Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (1992 OVA), Ryō Horikawa (Drama CD, episodes 1–3), Shin-ichiro Miki (Drama CD, episode 4), Kensho Ono (2022 ONA), Richard Cansino (OVA, English dub), Alejandro Saab (2022 ONA, English dub), Miguel Angel Leal (Latin American Spanish, 2022 ONA)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kall2_stand.png
One of the Four Divine Kings of the Dark Rebel Armies who used to be Dark Schneider’s right-hand man and best friend. A formidable sorcerer who yields ice magic, his powers are equal to that of his former pal. In order to create a “Sorcerer’s Kingdom,” a utopia ruled by magic, he invades the four kingdoms to resurrect Anthrasax, the God of Destruction.

Named after Bad Moon Rising's vocalist Kal Swan.

  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Filling this role alongside Abigail, with the end goal being to break the seals that imprison Anthrasax.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After Abigail was defeated, Anthrasax took control of Kall-Su in her sealing chamber, keeping him under her control by posing as his mom. the one that was in the castle was a spirit constructed by her the whole time.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was ostracized by his tribe for being the son of an ice dragon father and a human mother, whom he was forced to kill in defense when their tribe forces her to kill her son.
  • Dragon Ascendant: He became this for Hell's Requiem arc, once Abigail is defeated at the end of Dark Rebel Armies arc. By the time the new arc begins, two years passed and he had conquered many lands with a squad of twelve powerful wizards at his command.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: Has Icy Blue Eyes, befitting his title as the Frost Wizard and the greatest master of ice magic in the setting.
  • An Ice Person: Master of ice magic, which is how he got his title. It also foreshadows his ice dragon blood.
  • Light Is Not Good: White hair, Icy Blue Eyes and dressed with a white cloak, also one of the more ruthless antagonists.
  • Utopia: His dream is to build a nation where magic rules over all. A place where everyone is equal, regardless of their status. He names it "Sorcerer's Kingdom".
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Much like his father figure D.S.

    “Prophet of the Underworld” Abigail

Voiced by: Ryūzaburō Ōtomo (1992 OVA), Tomokazu Sugita (2022 ONA), Richard Epcar (OVA, English dub), Ray Chase (2022 ONA, English dub), Daniel del Roble (Latin American Spanish, 2022 ONA)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abigail_stand.png
A dark cleric known as the “Prophet of the Underworld,” Abigail is one of the Four Divine Kings of the Dark Rebel Armies. He uses sorcery to control his “Rotten Army” of undead beings. Together with Kall-Su, he invades Meta-llicana in hopes of resurrecting Anthrasax, the God of Destruction.

Named after the King Diamond album of the same name.

  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Filling this role alongside Kall-Su, with the end goal being to break the seal that imprisons the Dark God of Destruction, Anthrasax.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Turns out he was under Anthrasax's thrall the whole time.
  • Clark Kenting: Exaggerated. While his body healed, Abigail used a robot suit that resembled an buffed version of himself and joined the samurai as Angus. Lampshaded by Yoko as she didn't realize Angus was a disguised Abigail until he suddenly talked.
  • Comic-Book Fantasy Casting: According to Kazushi Hagiwara in Volume 7 of Bastard!!, he based Abigail's look after the actor Kyusaku Shimada.
  • Defector from Decadence: Revealed to be a former member of the Ten Wise Men of Europa.
  • Evil Laugh: To the point of parody. Kall-Su certainly isn't impressed, and at one point Abigail is rendered in goofy scribbles and ends his Evil Gloating by remarking that he's been laughing so hard that his ribs hurt.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Has this energy going for him while controlled by Anthrasax.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Abigail is usually a girl's name.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: Unlike the rest of the Four Divine Generals who seek to control Anthrasax as a tool to bring forth a utopia tailor made for the magically inclined, Abigail is much more interested in the mass destruction Anthrasax can bring. Justified after being revealed to be controlled by Anthrasax herself.
  • One-Winged Angel: His Omega Abigail form, which requires combining the powers of the three Legendary Demonic Artifacts Note with the essence of Anthrasax within him.
  • Villainous Cheekbones: Are more noticeable whenever he performs an Evil Laugh.
