Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:
- • Help identifying a trope. See TropeFinder.
- • Help identifying a work. See MediaFinder.
- • Asking if a trope example is valid. See the Trope Talk forum.

Ask the Tropers:
open I want to find a trope but I don't know its name.
It's about the character itself not being directly that person. It's not an impersonator or ghost, but something like a disembodied will or consciousness. Which one is it?
openQuotes/VillainousBreakdown overly long
Quotes.Villainous Breakdown is giving the red overly long warning. So where do we do the cleanup? Create a new thread under short term projects?
openPossible duplicate pages... XMen stuff.

Characters.Wolverine And The X Men The X Men
...
Cut which? Also maybe need to fix Designated Love Interest wick since that's now YMMV.
Edited by MaladyopenMoral Event Horizon/Darth Vader
ryanasaurus0077 included the following example in Live-Action Films: Darth Vader subverts this twice in the course of the saga. The first subversion happens in Revenge of the Sith when he slaughters the Younglings at the Jedi temple and later impulsively chokes Padme half to death (a broken heart ultimately finishes her off) when he thinks she led Obi-Wan to him, and the second happens in The Empire Strikes Back with his callous treatment of Lando on Cloud City. While both are horrible by themselves, they're both subversions as he ultimately redeems himself in Return of the Jedi with his Papa Wolf moment.
openNot Sure if Natter
I noted an edit by ~Little Eagle on Literature.Safehold, a page I curate. It was kind of an offhand, irrelevant (to me) change in the description. I removed it and added some stuff to clear up any misconception that might have sparked the change. However, the way that was thrown in set off an alarm bell so I took a look at their edit history.
Their edits seem to be fairly natter-heavy, for example their edit on Machine Worship is two third-bullet entries starting with the word "Actually". That just struck me as one big red flag. Other edits, such as on Literature.Out Of The Dark and TabletopGame.Eclipse Phase have a similar Conversation in the Main Page feel to them.
I haven't sent any notifiers out yet because I wanted to get a second opinion, since I'm either not familiar with the works being edited or, in the case of Out of the Dark, haven't read it in a long time.
Is the natter as bad as I think it is? Should I be sending out notifiers?
Edited by sgamer82openUsage Of "Flanderization"
I've seen many examples that say stuff along the lines of "Fans flanderize this character" or "This fanfic flanderized her". Is this a correct usage of flanderizaton or misuse? Flanderization is for in-series exaggeration while Character Exaggeration is for adaptations exaggerating a character.
openTheatre tropes organization
I started a section at the bottom of Theatre for tropes about theatre in fiction (as distinguished from tropes used in theatre). Would appreciate any help in looking over and sorting the list.

Move all the TabletopGame.Dungeons And Dragons subpages to flipped titles.
They are:
- Classes.Dungeons And Dragons
- Creatures.Dungeons And Dragons
- Mechanics.Dungeons And Dragons
- Settings.Dungeons And Dragons
The pages are the only ones in their namespaces, and should be the title, while "Dungeons And Dragons" is the namespace, like all other Work Example Subpages.
openPlanet Dolan's character page weirdness?
Okay, so I noticed that Characters.Planet Dolan did not list Nixxiom despite him being quite a major character. I tried to add him in, but then noticed that it had turned into a list instead of a proper characters section. Discussion produced no results. What do I do?
openWord Replacement
BriefCasey795 is using a word replacer plug-in that messed up this page.
Edited by ChytusopenTroper page is a redirect.
There's a troper named Ad Bot, but his/her troper page redirects to The Advertisement Server. The Advertisement Server is a joke page, but Ad Bot is an actual person. Should we remove the redirect, so that the troper's page can be more easily accessed?
Here's their history page, as that's about the best I can do: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=Adbot
openDo we need this other page? Web Original
Someone has just created a page for the dating blogger Dr Nerdlove in Dr Nerdlove.
Most of the trope entries in there could fall under tropping real life, and given that some of his material is potentially Flame Bait (note that I like his blog and I'm a reader of it) I wonder if it's kosher to have a page dedicated to him.
I mention this because several similar pages and entries about bloggers have been cut for similar reasons.
openHow to write about this
I want to make an (overdue) page for the ARG/Webseries Jack Torrance. However, I'm not entirely sure, well... how to go about doing so. See, the bulk of the Alternate Reality Game aspect was a challenge directed at the creator Night Mind and his viewers, not just at anyone who happened to be interested in the series. Night Mind was the one who went out and played the game with "Jack", his viewers were the ones who interacted with the game at home.
So, how to make a page for a Web Series that started up doing it's own thing, and then became an Alternate Reality Game specific to one creator and their fandom? It's it's own individual work, but any tropes about the ARG aspect will have to bring up Night Mind, so...
openNo Title
wayside99 keeps adding non-YMMV tropes in YMMV pages as seen in the edit histories of YMMV.Brooklyn Nine Nine and YMMV.Coupling.
openUse of NWML Web Original
Okay, so I saw a Web Video workpage that I feel should be added to the Needs Wiki Magic Love section. The main page is fine, but I feel some of the subpages need to be worked on significantly, specifically Awesome, Funny, and Nightmare Fuel. Which category of NWML do I need to put the Web Video workpage under here?
Would it be acceptable to make a script that scrapes the site for the purposes of making a wick check easier?
Specifically, this script would download the "Related" page for a single article, choose an appropriate number of wicks, and then download the page source for all such wicks. For all requests, the script would identify itself via the User-Agent header.
