openFoster’s home page is missing
I believe the page for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends has disappeared, probably because of the crash. Is there some way to recover it, or do we have to start all over?
Edit: never mind, it seems to have come back. Ignore this
Second edit: it’s gone again! Sometimes when I go to look at the page, I see it like normal, and then sometimes it says that no such page exists. What is going on here?
Edited by Loopytires55opentlp draft rogue launched?
Unauthorized Mission was just launched and it doesn't seem like it should be? Since looking at the page on TLP it doesn't seem that anyone's contributed to this page for several months. There's also the fact that the first sentence in the trope "Pistols At Dawn wuz ere takin over ur druft" clearly shouldn't be in a finished product.
openCan you be Rescued from the Scrappy Heap if you were never the Scrappy? Anime
I was looking at the YMMV page for Fate/Grand Order Babylonia, and there's an entry referring to the existence of Caster Gilgamesh (who is a Reasonable Authority Figure as opposed to being a villain in most of the franchise's other works) as an instance of the character being Rescued from the Scrappy Heap. Thing is, while Gilgamesh is a Hate Sink in other works in the franchise (Unlimited Blade Works comes to mind) he's usually considered a Base-Breaking Character at worst. He's not listed in any of the franchise's works' pages as a Scrappy, if that makes a difference. I thought the example should be deleted, but as I understand it, Scrappy entries can get a bit contentious so I thought I'd run it by here after discussion only got one response.
openSlow-moving edit war on Console Wars
There's been a bit of a dispute on UsefulNotes.Console Wars, and I figured I'd come here to get input.
The issue is when to consider the end of the Eighth Generation for handhelds. The definition we decided on for end-of-generation dates was to base it on the debut date of the successor systems, but that generation (specifically, the Nintendo 3DS) doesn't really have a successor.
Almost exactly a year ago, I put in the first solid end date at 2019 — the handheld-only Lite version of the Switch was launching, and seemed like a close-enough match to consider it the 3DS' "successor handheld"; and I included a note explaining this.
In October, Shark 300 changed the date (and only the date, not the reasoning) to 2017 without an edit reason. About a week later, I caught this and changed it back, thinking they must be confusing the Switch Lite with the original version.
Then I just found that last month, Shark changed it again and this time cut the explanation note as well. Again, no edit reason; so I don't know if they're confusing the original Switch with the Lite, actually trying to claim the original Switch as the 3DS' successor, or something else.
If we come to a consensus that 2017 is the better date, I'm fine with that; but we need to have some explanation there to explain the reasoning since the rule of thumb on the rest of the page doesn't apply.
openItalicization on mobile
Hi, I’m a long-time reader of the site who recently made an account, and I’m having a bit of trouble. I managed to figure out linking and stuff pretty easily, but I keep trying to format work names in italics and it keeps not working. I know it says to put a double apostrophe on each end of the word or phrase you want italicized, but whenever I do that the apostrophes show up in the actual text of the page.
For example, if I want to italicize, say, Batman, I write ‘’Batman’’ and it shows up looking exactly like that on the final edited page.
Am I doing something wrong here? I’m editing on my phone, if that helps.
openDuplicate Example List
ReferencedBy.Cthulhu Mythos and Public Domain Artifact both have sections dedicated to the Necronomicon, each with their own examples. Shouldn't only one page list examples, and the other one to refer to the previous page for them? And which page should actually list those examples? (Public Domain Artifact is pretty crowded, if you ask me)
openDragon Quest V Complaning and Misuse of Woolseyism Videogame
Woolseyism: Almost everything has been renamed in the English localization. If you don't dig the Punny Names and the Narm Charm of the localization, this game will be a Macekre for you. Especially if you've already played the much more faithful fan translation of the original SNES game.
I dont know if the Complaining is kosher or not but this is most definitely a misuse of Woolseyism.
open 90s live action ?australian Live Action TV
Ok so the show was i believe made in the 90s. I believe the young girl was ill and she thought she was an alien but her family pretended she wasnt? i remember seeing inside the spaceship and i think it was powered by gold. she ended up leaving on the spaceship.
openYMMV page for Snowpiercer wiped Film
It looks like the YMMV page for Snowpiercer got wiped by the crash, including the edit history. The most recent archive on the Wayback Machine only goes as far back as 2018, which means that any examples and edits added since then, as well as any YMMV items for the 2020 TV series, are gone. Does anybody remember what was on that page before the crash that isn't in the archive?
openHandsome Jack Character page Videogame
Handsome Jack, of Borderlands 2 fame, has a whole lot of tropes in his folder to the point where it could fill a page on its own. I wanted to make a page for him, but whenever I make a Red Link and click edit mode so that I can copy and paste, it leads me back to the Trope Launch Pad. Understandable I suppose. Although, It's rather confusing for me since the Launch Pad doesn't seem to have any options for other page types besides tropes.
Edited by PurpleEmperoropenShould Win Back The Crowd get a Cleanup thread?
I noticed a lot of examples where it was being used to describe prerelease stuff and not the actual work: This example from YMMV.Soul Calibur VI for example:
- Win Back the Crowd: This is pretty much an Enforced Trope. Okubo stated that the damage caused by V put the franchise on thin ice; if this game fails, the Soul series will completely fade from the stages of history. Therefore, they're going all out with nothing to lose.
- From the moment VI was announced, there were already signs that this is in action. Many declared the series to be dead after nearly six years without anything major (apart from free-to-play, mobile, and pachinko machines, but that doesn't count) and the last game itself was polarizing to say the least. Comparatively speaking, the reception to this game's announcement was highly positive, a sentiment that only intensified when it became clear that the game would not follow the largely unpopular Time Skip from V, allowing old favorites to return once again and proving one's love for the series wasn't limited to the days of old.
- It's clear that this has been Project Soul's goal from Day 1. The game takes the best aspects of past games and does its best to improve and add to them, all while giving a fresh start to the series after a convoluted lore and a derided Time Skip backed the story into a corner. Basically, it's a new starting point and a second chance that many felt the series needed, and many would say that things can only go up from here.
- Okubo's promise that Soulcalibur VI will look to be a good game first, and an eSport second is also a sign of this. Many haven't been pleased that games lately have skimmed on content or made censorship among other compromises with the excuse being "we want this to be played in professional gaming". While Okubo stated he does have plans to make it accessible to professionals, the plan is to worry about that after the basics are covered.
- That being said, the tournament crowd is absolutely thrilled with how the game plays so far, stating that it takes what was good about V and improves upon it while adding new ideas to make the game feel more distinct and less like Street Fighter.
- Libra of Soul finally gives players the sequel to III's Chronicles of the Sword they've been asking for since it was introduced back in 2005. It's expected that this mode will be as addictive as its predecessor, and the reception to finally getting a mode like this again has been very positive.
- VI getting an easy ticket to the main stage in EVO 2019 came as an absolute joy to the fanbase, as unlike other games, Soulcalibur didn't have to make a single compromise to be enjoyed by all, casual players and professionals alike — it's just that well-made.
Not to mention the fact that it's also listed on works that didn't have a crowd untill the recent installment (That's Win The Crowd) and series that didn't lose fans despite a bad installment.
Edited by PlasmaPoweropen Removing a video example
Say there is a video example that doesn't illustrate a trope, how does one go about getting it removed from the video examples?
For futher context, on the page for Giant Woman, there is a video example that shows a giant female horse, rather than a giant human female, which means it is not an example of that trope.
Edited by Drakos25openEdit War Film
Shoobedobah added the following to YMMV.Godzilla King Of The Monsters 2019 on June 12th:
I removed it as the Broken Base clean-up thread had decided that it wasn't an example.
Shoobedobah has then added this to the page:
openDeleted by trolls?? Live Action TV
Hey so I noticed the Ho Yay section of Red Dwarf is now entirely deleted and it might be the work of trolls? I admit I know very little of how this website functions so idk if its just being moved or under construction or something.
The old version is still accessible via the Wayback Machine, I'm not sure if there's an edit history of sorts that can revert these changes.
Edit: Nevermind. It seems in the process of signing up and waiting for mod approval, it's been restored xD I should have checked it first tbh. I'm going to take it as a trolling attempt
Edited by PrincessZopenCreator/author both subverting and playing to fan service? Literature
I'm just wondering if this is a thing. Here's the description(feel free to give any feedback): There is a work(movie, piece of literature, or whatever) and there's been a lot of anticipation of "what a sequel might be look like." The most prominent example off of the top of my head is the lack of a second season of the TV show "Firefly." Or, more relevant: the amount of time between the Original Trilogy of Star Wars and the Prequels(DAE remember that hype?). Anyhoo... due to there not being any "sequel" to the work, the author/their relative and/or later fan(s)/disciple(s) decides to make a sequel.
Here's the kicker to this trope: rather than just giving in and giving everyone a fan service, the author decides to subvert fan expectations and mix in both what everyone wants and doesn't want. AKA they give an "eff you" to the fans by subverting expectations. Or, more specifically, they play to the fan base BY changing key details(not exactly a Retcon, but not too, too far off) in unexpected ways. Some welcome the changes, and some don't. This usually divides the fan base.
Is this already a thing? I can't find anything like it anywhere(but I'm SURE it's a thing!). My tepid example is "the New Testament" and its elaboration on things like "God's grace" and "who is 'in God's in'" and all of the loaded readings/theology there, e.g. including gentiles in salvation as opposed to the "Old Testament/Hebrew Bible" with mostly the Jews and "grace" being tied to Jewish nationhood/identity instead of "faith" in the NT. Or, if we're going by "no real life examples": the giant controversy surrounding Rey and the cast/plot/basically everything in the Sequel Trilogy of Star Wars versus Prequelers and Originalist criticism.
Any thoughts? I'm not even sure if this would count as a trope, piece of media, or etc.? Just looking to see if this has been identified as a thing(and I'm not naming something too insanely specific).
Edited by KayMan17openWhat should be done about this work page?
Just today, I randomly stumbled upon Project Pascal. Since the character page was in terrible shape, I decided to move any good examples to the main work page and comment out the ZCEs on there. However, after doing that, I realized there exists many more problems: the work is in the wrong namespace, it completely lacks wicks, and I can’t find the story anywhere besides this website. Should we just cut the entire page?
openAlex Rider Live Action TV
Hey guys, just went to make a page for Alex Rider, but apparently the page has been cut because "stub". Don't really know what that means, but it said I should come here and check.
So, Alex Rider series page, yea or nay?
openCatharsis Factor / Bumblebee Film
I added down Catharsis Factor to Sally's mom getting singled out because I bet people found it rewarding when she was called out for being thoughtless to Charlie. I know I added Take That, Scrappy! as well since some people happen to dislike her for insensitivity, but do you think this fits in both Catharsis Factor and Take That, Scrappy! or just the latter?
open More context needed for examples from these works
Edit: taken to ZCE cleanup
Edited by Troper48
Looks like the crash wiped it, so here goes again.
I noticed a large amount of bad examples and writing on the pages for The Loud House. I originally focused on YMMV, but the issue seems to be prevalent everywhere. Specifically, we came to the conclusion that a lot of the examples are over-exaggerations, especially when it comes to claiming the show is "edgy" or "dark" or "scary" for being a slapstick cartoon, as people seem to find slapstick violence to be as bad as realistic child-abuse...
Basically, I'm now wondering if a cleanup is in order. I don't watch the show, so I'd need help.
