openBile Fascination Writes The Plot????????
If an Audience Reaction is a factor in the creation of a work, should it be referenced in some way?
As an example: I could add mocking references to The Nutshack or The Big Bang Theory in a work, because I and others like to make fun of those works. So, you could say that me showing Bile Fascination towards The Nutshack is the justification for inserting The Nutshack references or even characters in a work.
In that case, how would that be classified? It wouldn't fit on a normal YMMV page because it's an Audience Reaction expressed by the creator towards a different work, and not directed to the work itself; it wouldn't fit on the Main page because it's still an out-of-universe example. Should it be listed as Trivia under Word of God if I officially say that I added references to The Nutshack out of Bile Fascination? Or is it not worth pointing out at all for this site?
Edited by TMH-Sir-Iron-Vomitresolved Gravity YMMV example
On YMMV.Gravity, Etrebamort added a Memetic Mutation example that didn't have any sort of context. I commented out the example and sent them a ZCE notifier. They responded by saying (I'm paraphrasing here) that adding context would lean into Don't Explain the Joke, and then made the example visible again while potholing it to From Bad to Worse.
I'm posting this query to ask for permission to comment out the example again. Without context, an example just shouldn't be visible at all, regardless of what kind of joke it would ruin with it.
openMystic Force issue.
Meduini has made a few concerning edits on pages regarding Power Rangers Mystic Force. They added an Adaptational Attractiveness example on the YMMV page, added a Broken Aesop example that seems to be mostly natter with sub-bullets that continue off the previous example, added an example for Not Even Bothering with the Accent on the trivia page, and recently used first person writing while incorrectly adding a sub-bullet on the awesome moments page.
I've already deleted and sent misuse notifiers for the Adaptational Attractiveness and Not Even Bothering with the Accent examples, but what should be done about the Broken Aesop and Awesome Moment examples?
Edited by ejmenendezopenI am confused by this edit reason.
So, on Dry Docking Sabot Tori edited a bunch of entries to remove mentions of fans finding the actors attractive saying ""Played by the beautiful X" appears five times on this page with little variation, and four times in a row in one section. I've retained one example of this that mentions something more descriptive, but there needs to be more about why these actors are appealing to the fans, or it's just a subjective example without any sort of clarifying context or explanation." Which I find odd, as isn't saying that fans find the performers attractive mentioning why fans find them appealing? Is it necessary to describe in detail why they are attractive when the trope doesn't require it? I am not even trying to get them added back (I don't think the performers needed to be mentioned) but am just confused what the edit reason is going for.
Edited by BullmanopenExample to Trope: 'Working Class Anthem' Film
Hey Tropers,
I stumbled upon the trope 'Working Class Anthem' and thought it would be great to contribute an example to it.
- Example:** The song 'Jame Raho' from the movie 'Taare Zameen Par (2007)' could be a fitting addition. This song, featured in the IM Db top 250, encapsulates the daily grind of two brothers. The elder brother adheres to a rigid routine, waking up early, preparing for school, and conforming to societal expectations imposed by parents and the community. This portrayal mirrors the disciplined approach often associated with the working class, where adherence to norms and responsibilities is paramount.
Conversely, the younger sibling rebels against this conformity, refusing to conform to the societal mold imposed upon him. His struggle symbolizes the challenges and aspirations of those who seek to break free from the constraints of conventional expectations.
I believe 'Jame Raho' embodies the essence of the 'Working Class Anthem' trope, portraying both the adherence to tradition and the desire for individuality within the working-class context.
Best regards, Sumit
openUnsure How to Categorize a Trope
I can't decide if this trope should be considered downplayed, zig-zagged, or something else.
The trope in question is Now Allowed to Hug and the example I want to add involves a character who is obsessed with cleanliness to the point of being repulsed by human contact finally hugging her friend as a show of appreciation. Shortly after this moment she disinfects her entire body in a moment that's played for comedy.
openWhat can I use for example images Anime
Hi there! Long time lurker, newbie editor of pages. I decided to do a baby step of fixing some dead links on the *K-ON!* page. However, I'm unfamiliar with what exactly is fine to use as an example image. Are archive.org okay to use, or is first-hand source preferred? I was able to replace one with another example image (since they demonstrated the same thing), but some of the others don't have exact replacements. I have found an archive log of one example, but am unsure if I could use it.
Also, what should I do if a link is dead, and I can't replace it? Three out of four video links have since been deleted, unclear if by copyright or by the user, so I'm worried I might not be able to find replacements. Should I remove the links if I can't?
[PS: if one could redirect me to a source that explains this, it would be much appreciated. ^^ I've tried but I didn't find one as of typing this]
opendoes this register as anti-semetic?
disclaimer: i am in no way a fan of zionism or Israel, free Palestine
a user in the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement and the No Real Life Examples Please brought up Master Race for cutting and this was one of the first examples:
* Ironically, despite their suffering at the hands of the Nazis over this belief the Jews haven't been immune to it either. The Jewish people were always ethnocentric, as evidenced by their religious texts purporting the supremacy of their ethnic collective over other nations. The main reason they treated Jesus as All of the Other Reindeer was because they expected a God-Emperor to establish a One World Order in which Jews would openly realize their spiritual and political supremacy over other peoples. However, their supremacist beliefs lacked the force of a state and an apparatus for wielding control over non-Jews until the formation of modern Israel, in which the Palestinians living under them are heavily discriminated against. Black African Jews (largely Ethiopians) have also been treated very badly, as have some Middle Eastern Jews (in spite of Jews' origins being there) and Christian converts because European Jews are the rulers overall, with many holding racist views.
now, racism among European Jews and Israel is a hot button topic and as someone from Southeast Asia I've seen Israeli racism towards SE Asians, especially Filipinos, but this sounds not great at all and blames "Jews"
this was originally added by stankykong here. the edits by Fireblood seem okay because it mentions the issues of racism against non-European Jews, which has been an issue in Israel for a while
openWeirdly hostile edit over a word?
An entry on Horrible.Animated Films for the film Bands on the Run was changed by bs2007 to replace the word "soulless" with "worthless", the edit reason being a threatening "Don't call a movie soulless ever again." What?
Edited by supernintendo128open "Official" Fix Fics
So, the main page for Fix Fic has "official" examples of the trope. Something about that doesn't feel right. A Fix Fic is something, by definition, something the fans wrote up to right wrongs in the original work, not Pre-TRS Author's Saving Throw. Not only does this encourage Trope Decay, a lot of these examples are speculative (and some examples even admit this). I find it funny how the actual Fix Fics are on their own subpage while the "official" ones are the ones on the main page.
Any idea what I should do with these examples?
Edited by PlasmaPoweropenEdit war over SRO
On this page, captaintrainor added an entry for Surprisingly Realistic Outcome that I later removed for being not really surprising and, though I forgot to mention it the first time, it's also a character reaction (which are not examples of SRO by definition). captaintrainor has since added it back without an edit reason.
openDC and Marvel sub pages
Hello, it's been a while since we talked, and I would've reached out to you sooner, but I've been sick and recovering. I'm well enough to edit on TV tropes, but I was too ill to send you a message until now.
I wanted to discuss the topic of DC and Marvel subpages again. There's a lot of debate and controversy about these subpages, mainly because they have examples from multiple mediums, and people are complaining about the other mediums being on two pages. You even deleted and removed some of the examples on these subpages, which if is a violation of the rules regarding subpages, I understand.
But then I realized something that would solve the problem: keep the examples on the sub-pages while deleting the second examples on the other pages. Based on my interpretation of the complaints, this would solve the problem and keep the pages instead of erasing them completely. I started doing this in a number of the sub-pages, and so I would like some feedback of this idea.
openTroper M00ny4rzu needs a tap on the shoulder. Western Animation
Troper M00ny4rzu keeps on adding back An Aesop for this recap page for the Bluey show, despite there being a cleanup for the wick. I had added the reason it was removed and the troper put the example back. The second time, I added much more details.
openHeavy-handed "badge of honor" troping Live Action TV
rr3elite appears to have a major Single-Issue Wonk focused on showing off the villainy of the character Zein from Kamen Rider Outsiders and their appearances in other Kamen Rider media, including this week's episode of Kamen Rider Gotchard. I initially reported them on ATT before for shoehorning in Fan Myopia-laden comparisons to other works through misuse of various tropes, but it is now clear that was a symptom of a much bigger wonk, mostly afflicting Zein's sheet, the page for Outsiders itself, and various pages for Gotchard (YMMV, antagonists sheet, Nightmare Fuel, #33's recap) where Zein's appearance is concerned.
I haven't sent any notifiers because there's too many offending edits to comb through, but a lot of their edits consist of what they have previously been reported for, plus Bold Inflation, countless sentence structure and grammar errors, and "look at how horrible this person is" examples that stretch Zein's villainynote it is a sapient AI that has placed the world into an authoritarian surveillance state with the intent of mass genocide and has manipulated the heroes into giving it its resources, but I would hesitate to call a lot of its actions deliberately symbolic or nuanced beyond face value.. They also added Speculative Troping examples to Gotchard #33's recap suggesting Zein would have had a darker and more dramatic role in the episode, when in reality he only appears to kill one of the unambiguously-evil villains in the episode and leaves just as quickly to promote Outsiders.
I'm not sure if this is a policy violation in its own right, but I cannot deny in good faith that it is starting to compromise their writing and thus the quality of the pages they are editing.
Edited by TrocyteVresolved Do you need permission for creating subpages?
Because I am fairly new at this wiki, I have a question regarding creating new pages: if the page for a work on this wiki lacks a certain subpage (for example, a Funny page, or Recap page), do you need permission first before creating that respective page?
Edited by HipsterDog02openDeleting excess character pages Web Original
How do you deal with character pages that are bare bones apart from an image or Zero-Context Examples? Is it okay to get rid of them if they aren't fleshed out, or do you have to get approval?
I’ve brought the page I want to deal with (the overloaded Planet Dolan page) to the Character Page Cleanup thread, but I don’t know where else to go from there.
openCrosswicking RL
Just making sure the exact policy on this one. Since plenty of trope pages allow Real Life examples, but you're not supposed to trope a creator's personal life, does that mean you're not allowed to cross-wick the RL examples from the trope page when it pertains to people who have Creator/ pages?
resolved CoolNickNack (again)
In a previous query I reported Cool Nick Nack for continuing to make Example Indentation errors despite notifiers, and apparently they were suspended. However they're still editing and still making indentation mistakes, in particular tacking on "sub-bullets" like replies or extensions of the previous example. And it's not as if they don't know how to indent properly either, as shown by this edit.
openExamples Are Not Arguable clarification
It's always been my understanding that the intention behind Examples Are Not Arguable is to state that either something is an example of a trope, or it isn't an example, and that entries that read along the lines of "X/Y is arguably an example of this trope" should be clarified or deleted.
However, lately I've noticed several instances of users seemingly interpeting the policy to mean that the words "arguable", "arguably" and other variants thereof aren't allowed to be used on the site in any context short of directly quoting a work, even on YMMV or Darth Wiki pages. Is this a correct reading of the policy, especially given that YMMV tropes are by their very nature something that people are going to potentially argue over?
Ever since they joined TV Tropes, dgenega5764 has been heavily focused on the Arch-Enemy page (and they have made tons of edits for nearly all of its subpages as well). There have been complaints about them shoehorning examples before, and I don't feel like things have really changed since then.
A lot of their examples simply boil down to two characters being enemies regardless of how personal or brief their enmity is. For example, they listed Buggy as an Arch-Enemy to Luffy, even though Luffy has openly stated that he simply sees Buggy as a moron.
Similarly, they listed Emperor Pilaf as an Arch-Enemy to Goku. While it may be true that Pilaf views Goku aa his greatest enemy, the same is definitely not true on Goku's end (especially considering that there are stronger, more personal, and more competent enemies to him; Pilaf is largely just comic relief).
They also listed Commander Red as one for Goku as well, which I think is even worse since the two never even met each other (and they only briefly interacted with each other in the anime over a radio).
I'm sure there are tons of other examples, but I feel like these illustrate my issues with their edits fairly well. They also have extensive history with pages like Greater-Scope Villain, Big Bad, etc.
