"That cat must have been a huge slut."

Long-winded dialogue in my stories frequently results in Metaphorgotten gems like this one as I write. Fun with wordplay in general seems to be where much of the humor comes from in my work. I'd explain the context leading up to this line, but it's more fun to just leave it here and keep you wondering.

Limits - a modern take.

Whew, been a while since I fought last.

...And there's the tear near my scalp. I feel the sensation of blood dripping down my face. I'm not blessed with invulnerability - stamina - speed - strength - not any more.

And since that dumb reboot thing, nobody remembers who I am.

Around me are, for once, deserving victims. Bunch of tough guys. Were about to smash up this comics shop—-the owner's hiding off in the corner. It'd been just about closing time too.

"Hey, hey you—-you can come out now." I forget how exhaustive it can get. Feel kinda uneasy on my feet. I fight off nausea and a sinking feeling in my gut.

Don't get all panicky, I wanna tell him, the bastards are alive. Regrettably so. If I had my powers, they'd be a splatter on the street.

I remembered them coming in, babbling about how this comics shop "sold too many commie-books" and "redefined who our heroes are" - then brandishing clubs and a baseball bat.

So I got up and did my usual thing. Got em to focus on me, instead of this shop.

Seems the one thing I'm good at is getting into fights.

And turns out, I still had it. And even I couldn't stand by and just let some internet skinheads run roughshod over a place I read comics since I was a kid.

"No way no how. I love this place." I stumble out the door, barely keeping in motion, "Not even the likes of me, Superboy—-Superboy-Prime—-not even I'm gonna let these guys tear up my second home."

The dismissal of a very silly idea that is surely untrue:

"According to the teachings of Ezolak, or at least the interpretation I and most of kin were raised with," Azaakas said, "the 'totems' are not gods or spirits as you recognize them. They are the... archetypes, of transcendent myths and legends, that make up all of our souls. We are all stories, within a story."

Seeing Koyel's skeptical expression, Azaakas groaned softly, muttered a number of hard-edged curses in his native tongue, and said, "I know what you're thinking. I've heard it a dozen times from nonplussed Qorisayane. No, of course that doesn't mean we're all... literally characters written in ink in some sort of... book." He put a hand to his brow. "That would be entirely ridiculous."

Probably this bit of dialogue on the subject of “inner demons,” which embodies the kind of awkwardness Played for Drama that I’m going for.

I couldn't stop talking. It was like the only way I could avoid the awkwardness of the moment was to talk myself more and more into a hole.

“And, like, most people who they say have ‘demons’ also only have one demon. Like, their one demon is alcoholism or beating their wives or whatever. But it's still one distinct problem. It's one giant demon on their shoulder, not multiple charging at them. I just think it's a really dumb phrase.”

Not from a character, but this: "HIS BEST FRIEND, a Dream Eater?" This was in a scene where the protagonist's friend is dying, when he only wished for the Dream Eaters (what you think they are) to die. His friend was actually a Dream Eater

“Hate isn’t the same thing as love at all, Casey,” Elizabeth’s voice trembled, “It’s… destructive, and… it hurts people, and… it burns you up inside…” Even now, she was starting to blush. Casey could see the pink flush rising to her cheeks even as he pulled her a little closer.

“You’re smarter than that, Beth. You know as well as I that you can’t truly have one without the other. It would be like day without night,” his voice trembled, “Heaven without hell. A stag night without a designated driver,” she blinked, “You can’t know how strong an angel is until they face their demons,“ he sat up sharply, pulling her face even closer, “And I know all about demons…”

Life is fragile. We're nothing but a slowing decaying sack of flesh and bones that is sentenced to death from the day we're born.

One would agree, everything that live is bound to die one day, or else the meaning of life itself will be lost.

If one desires to live their life to the fullest, the very act of taking risks is unquestionably required, this is a fact that I have come to term with long ago, but not yet accepted.

Life is fragile, which is why it's precious. One could die at any given moment, with no warning, and when there is, one could often do nothing about it.

Sometimes it deeply disturbs me to know that there are people who live peacefully knowing that they will certainly die one day, or perhaps that is the reason behind their unending motivation? That I do not know, for I, myself is yet still questioning my own very existence, fearing that one day, I, or any of my love one might perish, without a warning, and without a trace.

Fear is never induced by dangers nor threats, but the unknown. One would be at peace knowing that death is certain. It is the uncertainty of survival what makes one struggle.

I'm afraid to write, but I like to imagine.

Mostly from fanfics and my own stories i haven't published anywhere:

"If that man was any more inbred, he could be compared to a sandwhich."

" "The tests have already confirmed that you are not an orange—-" "Nah, i'm human" . . . . . Maybe Tony should try to be less mouthy in situations like this. " (Context: Darkest Minds au of Iron Man. The colors are names for different types of powers. This was a rare case of a good pun)

" "Who?" "You. Who else? I have to say you are very much alive for a dead man, but we both know how wrong can the government be, do we not?" " (Context: guy 2 reveals to guy 1 he knows his real identity)

"The city district was in chaos. Blood and fire." (I dunno why does this sound cool to me)

"He walked faster, already seeing his car, when suddendly a shadow the size of a man flashed over him, momentarily eclipsing a large area from the moonlight."

" "Look Steve, a ghost story" Bucky, clearly terrified, stage-whispered and pointed his finger at Johann's face." (CONTEXT: obviously from a captain America fanfic)

"Only the cold black river was separating Johann from the man draped in dark stars and stripes, the village ablaze behind them." (CONTEXT:from another Marvel Mirror Universe au)

"The Captain's finishing blow was interrupted by burning branches falling from the tree above, separating the fighters from each other. For a brief moment of truth, The Captain, flames shining through his hair and reflected from his sharp, bright eyes, looked more demonic than Johann." (CONTEXT:from the same story as the previous one)

"Wrapped up warm against the icy fingers of dusk, Dr. Jonathan Crane walked towards the parking lot. The trees, dark and forebonding, curved over his path as if they were claws of monsters."

"Icy wind slashed at his face and the rain danced its evil dance upon his head as he, cold and wet, tired and exhausted, made his way along the path through the forest. He could hear Gestapo's dogs behind him, getting closer and closer. Erskine looked over his shoulder and tripped on oak roots, falling face-first into mud. A crack of thunder lighted the sky, and his pursuers saw him. He saw them too, no more than one hundred and fifty meters away. They opened fire and Erskine ducked behind the tree, looking at his surroundings. He was in the middle a forest clearing, there was nothing else to take cover behind. No way out. He couldn't even burn his notes in the rain and wind. He squeezed his eyes shut and hoped for a quick death. The sounds came closer, and then there was more gunshots and shouting. An exchange of shots? Erskine carefully turned around looked, but it was dark again and he couldn't see anything. He heard a scream and a couple more shots, then it became completely silent, except for an ocassional roar of thunder from far away."

" "I have connections. I can get you to France, then you will be on your own" Erskine nodded "When you find the resistance, they will help you cross the channel" "Why are you helping me?" "Why would i not? You, your people, and all the others have done no wrong. You are people just like everybody else and deserve to be treated as such. Of course i help you. Neutrality in the face of evil is evil in itself!" " (CONTEXT: From a story set in WW 2, in germany)

"Had he been taken by Gestapo? The chaos in the room didn't look like the aftermath of a fight, but like something a maddened creature from a horror story would leave in it's wake."

" "You see, we all know that The Gods don't care and we have to take action ourselves. The Gods are not so different from us, they just live longer and have extraordinary abilities. I thought... Gott, this is going to sound even worse... That if i gained power equal to that of a god, i could..... I could..." He started trailing off."

"I want to fight too, not for nation, creed, or glory, i am just worried about the state of the world."

"During and after the Great War, anti-German hysteria had been high, and this war was no different. Americans always hated 'foreigners', despite the hypocrisy of literally everybody there except for the indians being foreigners or a descendants in a long line of foreigners themselves."

"Steve let go of it, not really giving a shit. To him, nations were just names and lines on the map. He had just been... Startled to hear this Erskine was German. Maybe he should go out less, the propaganda was getting a hold of him. Not all Germans were nazis, their first victims and the first refugees to America were mostly German too, but everybody seemed to forget that. And everybody hated Germans anyway. All the blame and punishment for the Great War had been lumped on Germany, despite all the inbred rulers being equally guilty and messed-up, and if the treaty had not been as harsh it was and made Germany the Europe's bitch, the nazis wouldn't've gained so much support from the population. So the Allies were technically guilty too, which everybody seemed to so conveniently forget about. Not surprising at all. Everybody always paints their side as the perfect good guys."

"Steve survived the week through sheer guts and cunning, pushing through the pain of his assignments and sabotaging the others to the best of his ability. Being the first to jump on the fake grenade when Phillips threw it in the middle of the group during an excercise. Playing the role of the perfect and inspiring hero while stabbing his boorish comrades in the back wholeheartedly, looking sympathetic in every situation The God threw at him, using his wits to replace what he lacked in strenght. Manipulation, he's had a lifetime of practice." (CONTEXT: from a Dark!AU of Captain America)

"The night of Tønsberg had been moonless and dark, the stars hiding from SS-Obergruppenführer Stark behind the clouds. The soldiers saluted Stark as he passed by, but he did not return the gesture, leaving them hang their arms up in the air until they would come down on their own accord."

"Stark laughed madly, it was real. He was holding the light of gods on the palm of his hand! Gruning and his soldiers all looked at him as if he was mad. What was madness? Delusion. Stark held no delusions!"

" "You are Major Hochstetter" Peggy reminded Rogers with a whisper just in case before approaching the checkpoint "and my name is Frau Cliffgarde". Steve nodded, and they walked to the doors, where the guards stepped in front of them to check their papers. They went pale as bedsheets, because Steve's papers said he was Gestapo. Despite the fact that he misprounounced his 'own' name while identifying himself. "Not 'Hochsetter', Rogers, 'Hochstetter'" She whispered when out of earshot, and Rogers gave another solemn nod. He still didn't know very much German, and it wasn't like Peggy, a woman, could do the talking. But when people thought you were Gestapo, just incoherently screaming in their faces would usually be enough to silence them." (Yeah, that was a random Hogan's Heroes reference)

"After dashing into the room, Steve noticed there was another man in there, chained to the bars of the window by his wrists. He was short and round and had displaced, broken glasses. His eyes were wide with fear. Steve wasn't sure how to communicate with the guy or if he spoke english (Steve didn't speak german), so he took his disguise's swastika armband off his arm and pointed between it and himself. "Me no nazi" Steve explained, pointing at the armband again, then ripping the swastika in half and letting it fall on the ground. The man blinked in confusion. Steve pointed at Bucky, who Peggy was freeing. "What happen?" Steve asked, and the man looked at him like he was stupid. "I speak excellent english, thank you very much." "

"After Hochstetter and the woman were gone, Sigi distracted the guards by approaching from the front, exclaiming in drunken manner. The guards stared at Sigi for a moment, then threatened him with a gun. Sigi put his hand on the rifle's muzzle, babbling nonsensically in Berlin dialect despite being Bavarian. God help them, had he gotten himself courage from a beer mug?"

"Let me tell you a story," he snarled, seizing the unfortunate scout by the throat and dragging him to eye level. Crossroads

"Please...tell me."

The woman stood at the crossroads, before a well dressed young lad, dark of hair, light of complexion, too beautiful to be human - and too much cruelty in his small smile to be humane. Eyes bluer than the sky peered out at the inquirer.

"Please tell me the fortune was wrong! I've heard so much about you!"

The young man shrugged and ran a hand through his hair as he stood there, his suit darker than midnight, no light shining upon him. The light abhorred him.

"Tell me," He said in a dark, crooning voice, "What is it you want to know?"

She shrank back a bit, as he leaned forward, cupping his chin, "It said—-it said that I will not be loved in return—-"

He smirked and stated, "Yes. That is absolutely true. You will remain alone, honest love will elude you. But I can offer you a facsimile. When you look upon a man or woman whom you wish to love, approach, but say nothing. If you utter a word at all - ever - to your dear love, the consequences will be...quite grave."

With that, Wolfang walked off on his path, humming a tune under his breath.

He looked down at a golden clock ticking away in his hand. Not on the daily schedule, but ticking down to the time when this lovely girl's fate would lead to doom.

"And so it occurs once again: One lone wanderer with a staff, harassed by many men bearing swords and rude attitudes... 28 such tales I know to tell. 11 feature me; 9 others I know to be true. Of the remainder I reckon the 5 to be sound tales and the 3 to be tall ones, but every single one of them ends in tears and humiliation... A great many traits are ascribed to me, but never will you hear patience nor mercy named. Decide now swiftly on the fate of your balls! Drop your swords and your attitudes, or become my 29th tale and feel the swift and lasting sting of The Nut-Cracker." - The Storyteller
