Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Those images are way too small for me

Btw, one of the best ways to post image links outside of image sharing sites like imgur, is just to upload the image to the Wiki Sandbox, rightclick the image and click "open image in new tab" and use that link.

Yes to Vandire... being fair the series has been going on since the 80s and has at least hundreds of characters.

Now, something I'd like to revisit:

  • Yggdra Union: Nessiah, formerly known as Aries, is a fallen Grim Angel that was cast down to Asgard and put into a weaker body. Wanting revenge against the gods, Nessiah creates the Tactic Cards and the Grand Centurio, a sword empowered by negative emotions. Giving the sword to the first royal ruler of Fantasinia, Nessiah starts to manipulate conflicts in order to fuel the sword until it becomes strong enough to break the seal of his real body. Seducing an Undine to get the Transmigragem, an item that allows them to reincarnate, Nessiah frames the humans to start a war that leads the Undine to near-extinction. Working for the Bronquian Empire, Nessiah uses an army of resurrected corpses in eternal pain to fight the Royal Army and allows the heroes live in order to fuel the conflict while killing his own soldiers for opposing it. After the island containing his real body emerges from the ocean, Nessiah politely asks the heroine for the Grand Centurio; when she refuses, Nessiah summons another army, including the resurrected corpse of one of her friends, intending to kill her and all the Royal Army.

The EP. Now, for much of the discussion, it failed to be proven that the character wasn't corrupted by other CM Hector. We kinda concluded to err on the side of taking the OP's word that nothing about the corruption was explicitly stated but going back through the old discussion: we don't seem to have anything solidly disproving it either. It feels like we ended up taking the assumption that nothing exists to indicate he was corrupted... yet it's not clear how much info was gathered to prove this. The OP and Kaz were quite adamant he counted but I'd like a more thorough examination of a potential mitigating factor to determine if we can actually prove this is something akin to a Kefka or Bask Om case.

You know what I will let some else hand the images. I will study more on how to do it as I feel like right now I'm just wasting the threads time.

[up] Yeah. More examination on that would be good.

About that, I have been meaning to say, but Characters.Blaze Union, the character page for the prequel, has Nessiah apparently be a benevolent character in some routes, and expands on his character to make him more sympathetic, or at least gives him some Pet the Dog moments. The character page is filled with ZCEs, so I can’t tell how accurate that is, but I’m saying cut for now.

Kinda where I'm leaning here. I know you didn't lie or anything of the sort Kaz and it's nothing against you but there's so much questionable with this guy that leaving him up until we've got more clarity doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

[up][up] Okay with that I'm definitely saying cut until we figure out what the hell happens with him from start to finish.

[tup] Cutz.

I found a candidate from a very obscure novel I read a while back that I'd like to make a post for.

What's the Work? Werewolve SS is a novel written by Jerry Ahern and his wife Sharon in 1989 and published in 1990. Most of Ahern's books are part of long-running action series about survivalist groups, but Werewolve SS is a standalone sci-fi horror book. As the title suggests, it is about werewolves in the SS, and it follows two men, Evan Hardy and Hugh Mac Tavish, who survived meeting them in 1945 only to run into them again in 1990.

Who is He? What has He Done? The Nazi werewolf leader and Big Bad, a hulking werewolf with distinctive blond hair both as a wolf and a man, is an SS colonel who calls himself Dr. William Stein - it's probably an alias, but we're never given any other name, so Stein it is.

Stein's career in evil began with the outbreak of World War II, when he was an historian of science and a fanatical junior SS officer. Shortly after invading Poland, Nazi troops encountered a live werewolf. Stein, an expert in both science and folklore, was put in charge of catching it, and when his men couldn't find it by searching he decided to use Polish villagers as bait. He rounded up a dozen villagers, including small children, and kept them in absolutely filthy conditions designed to maximize body odor and draw the werewolf in. When one of the little kids died of exposure, Stein kept the corpse out as bait, and the next day he had his men cut some of the captives with razors to make bleeding but not deadly wounds. The scent of blood finally drew the werewolf in, and it was captured while it ate its victim. During the capture, the werewolf infected one of Stein's men, so Stein kept both werewolves captive, using the surviving peasant "bait" to feed them. Stein filmed the werewolves killing their victims and presented the footage to Hitler, who charged him with creating werewolf supersoldiers.

Stein spent the next four years researching werewolves and is implied to have done so by experimenting on Holocaust victims. Eventually he figured out how to create werewolves with an injection rather than a bite, how to make an antidote to that injection, and how to use a specific frequency to control the transformation regardless of the moon's phase. Stein used the serum to make himself and many other members of his SS division into werewolves. Ahern's werewolves have the standard werewolf power set, but also gain powers even in human form - Stein and his men are immune to sickness and age. By 1990, Stein is 80 years old but remains physically in his early thirties.

Much to his displeasure, Stein and his unit were held in reserve rather than deployed. They saw action only in the spring of 1945, when an Allied force found them by accident. Stein led his werewolves in the bloody and nightmarish massacre of these men, and only Evan Hardy and Hugh Mac Tavish survived. After the war, Stein waited for an opportunity to strike at the Allies and restore the Nazi regime. Being immortal, he played the long game and implemented his plan over several decades.

By the main story of Werewolve SS, Stein works at the fictional Sutton College in upstate New York as a history professor and athletic coach, using university space and equipment for his plans. Evan Hardy's daughter Dannie also works there, so one day Stein runs into Evan Hardy by chance. Evan recognizes Stein, so later that night Stein has him kidnapped. Knowing that Evan has heart problems, Stein chains him to a treadmill and literally runs him to death, returning the body to his home to make it look like a heart attack. When Dannie confronts Stein about her father's accusations and subsequent death, Stein lies that his uncle was an SS man and that Evan fought him, not Stein, in 1945. While she seems to buy it, he still decides to kill her, and he sends nine werewolves after her to the UK when she goes to visit Hugh Mac Tavish.

After killing the werewolf death squad, Dannie, Mac Tavish, and his protege David head back to the US to investigate. When Mac Tavish meets Stein again, Stein gleefully confirms his identity, gloating that his plans are too far along to stop and promising to have Mac Tavish and Dannie killed. David, Dannie, and her boyfriend Richard fortify her place, expecting a targeted attack. Mac Tavish heads off to warn the government, and Stein has two werewolves follow him to New York City, where they attack him and murder a number of bystanders while trying to kill him.

About halfway through the book, Stein sets his Evil Plan in motion. He sends his werewolves to attack Sutton's neighboring town of Highcliffe. He has some remain in human form to set fires and cut the power, but most of the werewolves rampage through the town, biting some people to infect them but killing most victims outright. Stein has also infected thousands of unwitting victims by disguising his werewolf serum as a flu vaccine, and by having Sutton College's radio broadcast the transformation frequency, he also activates all of these werewolves. The Nazi werewolves specifically target and kill people, but the new werewolves just roam around randomly killing people. Between the werewolves and the fires, Highcliffe is almost totally destroyed, probably killing thousands of people. Dannie, David, and Richard are caught in the attack, and only Dannie and David manage to get out.

The ever-growing werewolf horde devastates the region, wiping out tiny farming towns and even spreading into Canada. By the time Mac Tavish and the government get back to Highcliffe, the town is gone, a smoldering wreck filled with charred and mangled bodies. Of the few survivors, many have been bitten, and Mac Tavish gives one woman a Mercy Kill at her request. It's repeatedly emphasized how awful it is to be a werewolf, especially one of those created by Stein - not only do you turn into a monster, slaughter the innocent, and remember it afterward, but a psychopathic Nazi controls the transformation and can inflict it on you regardless of the moon's phase or where on Earth you might be. Those who have been bitten, as opposed to injected, will also transform during a full moon unless the frequency is specifically used to suppress it.

By the next morning, the Army has set up a perimeter around the zone Stein has laid waste to, but they've been both infiltrated and infected. Stein's double agents attack the perimeter and slaughter the soldiers, while Stein fires his frequency at them to activate the unwitting werewolves among the soldiers to cause even more damage. When fleeing this massacre, Dannie and David note that there are refugee columns from Highcliffe and the other destroyed towns, headed to the perimeter and straight toward these werewolves. Throughout all this, Stein still has his men gunning for Dannie specifically, just to spite her father.

That night, the heroes reach Sutton College with a SEAL team, which Stein has fortified as his headquarters. They find that he has sealed the students on the school grounds and let the werewolves slaughter and eat them. During the raid, Stein captures Mac Tavish to have him witness his grand victory and decides to spare him specifically so that he can spend the rest of his life knowing that he lost. Stein summons his werewolf army, now numbering in the tens of thousands, to witness a speech where he outlines his plans. Stein intends to keep all his werewolves transformed into the next day, where they will wipe out the perimeter and march into New York City, killing and infecting as they go. The day after that, he will send his broadcast to Europe, where he has already infected thousands of others with his fake vaccine. Stein's endgame is to expand his werewolf horde into a vast army of millions, which he will use to Take Over the World starting with the former Allies. Stein will use his broadcast to release the forcibly transformed werewolves in conquered nations, but if anyone rebels against his rule or if he dies, they'll stay that way forever.

Hearing this, Mac Tavish baits Stein into revealing that there's an antidote, at which point he and Dannie attack Stein. Stein transforms to kill them, but while mauling Mac Tavish he bites him. Mac Tavish activates one of Stein's miniature transmitters, which his minions used to control the change, and becomes a werewolf. Using his new power, Mac Tavish battles Stein and ultimately bites the bastard's head clean off.

Mitigating Factors? None. The only human being Stein shows any positive feelings for is Adolf Hitler himself, who he seems to literally worship as a god. His only moral values, for lack of a better word, are the tenets of Nazism - he sincerely believes in Nazi racial theory and proudly justifies the Holocaust. He's also just a petty, cruel, and vindictive person in general, despite his Faux Affably Evil and Wicked Cultured demeanor.

Heinous Standard? He's the only villain in the book, for one thing. For another, he also killed tens of thousands of people in a massive terrorist attack.

Verdict? I'd say an easy keeper.

Also answering ACW's question both book!Cutz and Film!Cutz pretty much commit the same crimes.
