Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

And now the second Resurrection of Rose EP. To be honest, this candidate was a lot harder to decide on than Rose was, but in the end, I decide that it was at least worth a EP:

What’s the Work?:

I already described Resurrection of Rose in the previous EP, so let’s cut to the chase. As you probably already know from the last EP, Rose has some assist in her plot for revenge in the form of the Eldritch Abomination, the Overlook Hotel and in the fic... It’s sentient.

Who is the Overlook Hotel? What does it do?:

The Overlook Hotel was brought back to life, after initially being burned down by Danny during his heroic sacrifice in the movie, by Rose the Hat with steam. The Hotel demands to know why Rose and her henchmen had step foot on its land, and Rose makes a deal with it, offering to feed it Abra and a lifetime supply of children so it would never go hungry again in exchange for helping her in her revenge scheme. The Hotel gleefully accepts the deal, but claims that it must feed first. Rose obliges to this by sacrificing Lester to the Hotel, which doesn’t hesitate in gruesomely eating Lester alive, to Scrappy Meg’s horror. Rose then tells the Hotel to play “a little game” with Abra.

After absorbing the steam the True Knots collected from the children, the Hotel assaults Abra during the Rose’s invasion of Abra’s town with the spirits that were trapped inside of it and then proceeds to possess her and force her to kill her own mother with Abra breaking free of its control far too late.

Later on, the Hotel allows itself to merge with Rose, and informs her about the multiverse, where Abra defeats her in every world, which leads to Rose deciding to destroy every universe out of spite. When Abra gets trapped inside of Rose and the Hotel during the final battle, we see what the Hotel does to it’s victims, and it’s horrifying. All the souls it captures are taken for it to feed on their Shining for all of eternity, and that it made a deal with the founder to keep a steady supply during winter, with the souls pretty much calling this hell. Fortunately, Abra is escape by brightening her Shining by purging her negative thoughts, with the other souls doing the same. After that, the souls, including Jack, proceed to push Rose and the Hotel into the black hole that Rose was using to destroy the universes, killing them both and ending the Hotel’s hellish reign once and for all.

Migrating Factors:

None. Not a single one. And from what I seen, there is in fact a personality in the form of sadism, wickedly smiling when accepting Rose’s deal, and taking its time in devouring Lester, a few minutes to be exact.

Heinous Standard:

Rose definitely passes the heinous standard, and after thinking it, the Hotel also passes this to. The crime that definitely helps it’s case, is the one where it subjects it’s victims into an And I Must Scream fate, feeding on their Shining for all of eternity, with the victims claiming it to be hell. Said victims are also binded by demonic hands, with some of them even gagged, and it is said there are hundreds of victims too, and they plead for Abra to help them. Definitely sounds like hell.

Conclusion:

I’m thinking keep, but what do you guys think?

Sure to the Doctor Sleep fic duo.

Anyway, it's the 13th! Let's talk about Titans. Specifically, let's talk about the guy we should have gotten up way, way back at the end of season one before the showrunners decided to make the finale of season one the premiere of season two. Trigon the Terrible, everyone.

Who is Trigon? What has he done?

An interdimensional demon lord and the father of Rachel Roth (Raven), Trigon's evil spans centuries. In his first attempt to cross into the universe Trigon annihilated an entire world before he was banished again, and now lurks on the other side of the universe, waiting patiently for his acolytes to forge him the gateway to cross. In Trigon's name, a wide-spanning cult of personality known as the Organization kills and tortures truckloads of innocent people, all to find Trigon's daughter whom Trigon fathered with Angela Azarath (whose coupling with Trigon is consensual this time whereas in most continuities it decidedly isn't).

Trigon's followers wreak havoc across the States and Trigon is built up for a long while, as Rachel/Raven is befriended by the eventual group of Titans: Dick Grayson/Robin, Donna Troy/Wonder Girl, Garfield Logan/Beast Boy, Kory Anders/Starfire, and Jason Todd/Robin II. Trigon is finally brought into the physical world by Angela in season 1's penultimate episode within Angela's old home in Ohio, where he proceeds to enact his final scheme. See, Trigon can only assume full physical form by breaking his daughter's heart. To do this, Trigon sets about trapping all her friends in personalized Lotus-Eater Machine nightmares, subjecting them to Mind Rape until they shatter and become his corrupted slaves, one after another until only Rachel and Gar are left. Trigon forces Rachel to watch as he makes the heroes beat Gar, seemingly to death, telling Rachel all of this agony is her fault to push her off the edge before literally ripping out her heart to finish his corruption of her.

Trigon assumes his horribly-rendered final form and sets about to achieve his ultimate goal: to spread his darkness across the universe, starting by burning Earth into a lifeless shell before going forth to annihilate countless more planets in his way, never stopping until all life in the universe has been destroyed. Trigon even pauses to "housekeep" via snapping the neck of his now-useless servant Angela ("I don't understand." "That's the problem. You never did." crunch) before preparing to bring ruin to the universe. Before he can go too far, Rachel snaps out of her brainwashing, reaches Dick, and returns to banish/destroy(?) Trigon for good.

Any mitigating factors?

About as many as usual for Trigon. Now, the interesting Meta Twist to this season is that Angela is very much Trigon's willing lover, and the two do indeed seem affectionate with each other when Trigon first crosses over. Except Trigon breaks her neck the second she wears out her use and treats their daughter monstrously. Nothing to report.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

To report on the rest of Titans, nobody counts from the second season. Deathstroke very much has loved ones. I am debating a post from the first season on Dr. Adamson—he's Trigon's other chief servant, and the guy behind the Nuclear Family and the shit-ton of deaths involved in that—I'm just a bit hesitant given his weird "heal the world" ravings I'm not sure are just generic evil cultist blather.

As expected, sure to Trigon.

As for the Doctor Sleep fic duo... Rose kinda reminds me of King Boo in Luigi's Mansion : both starts out as Benevolent Bosses but throws out all of these redeeming qualities after their first defeat. Saying yes to both anyway.

Alright, here are the Resurrection of Rose Write ups:

  • The Resurrection of Rose:

    • Rose the Hat is the leader of the True Knots who abandons her previous redeeming qualities for the sake of getting Revenge on Abra for her death in the original film. Upon being revived by the surviving True Knots, Rose kills their leader and forces the others to work for her, killing 4 of them when they attempt to defy her. Taking control of Aldrich's human trafficking operation where she creates machines that drains children of their steam, causing them agonizing pain and slowly killing them, while keeping the supply of steam to herself, starving the majority of her fellow True Knots. Rose would later subject 30 of her True Knots to an experimentation of the Orb of Madness, which drives them mad and forces to kill each other in horrifying ways, leaving the survivor completely traumatized at what she done. After reviving her original henchmen for the sole purpose of them being useful to her in her plans, Rose makes a deal with the Overlook Hotel to help her in her revenge scheme, sacrificing Lester to it when it demands to be fed. Rose would later send the Orb Infested True Knots to attack Abra's Town, slaughtering many innocent people, including children, while having the Hotel force Abra to kill her own mother. When Crow Daddy, Andi, and Meg decide to help Abra take Rose down, Rose tortures Andi and mortally wounds Crow Daddy after taking advantage of his love for her before proceeding to merge with the Overlook Hotel to become the most powerful Shiner in existence. After learning of the multiverse, where Abra manages to defeat her in every other world, Rose attempts to destroy every universe with a black hole out of spite.

    • The aforementioned Overlook Hotel is an sentient demonic building and the one responsible for the events of The Shining. After being revived by Rose via steam, Rose offers that if helps her in her revenge scheme, she would feed it Abra and a lifetime supply of children so it would never go hungry again, with the Hotel gleefully accepting the deal, but states it must feed first, gruesomely and slowing eating Lester when Rose decides to sacrifice him to the Hotel. During the True Knots' invasion of Abra's town, the Hotel assaults Abra with the spirits that it captured before proceeding to possess her and force her to kill her own mother. After merging with Rose, the Hotel informs her of the multiverse, where Rose loses to Abra in every world, which leads Rose to attempt to destroy every universe out of spite. When Abra gets trapped inside the body of Rose and the Hotel during the final battle, she discovers that the Hotel has taken the captured souls to feed on their Shining for all of eternity and made a deal with the founder to keep a steady supply during winter, with some of them even calling it their own personal hell.

BTW, I'll try to write entries for the King Kong villains as soon as possible. I don't think there are other villains from the franchise who may count, I tried to take a look at King Kong 2 to see if the villain counted but I felt he wasn't heinous enough (all he did was trying to kill Kong, his pregnant mate, their baby after he was born, and endanger two civilians). I didn't watch Kong: King of the Apes though, so I don't know if the villains from that show might have a chance to count. Has anyone watched it?
