Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

The thing with the 50 Blessings Assassination is that it doesn't really give any suggestion how big the group is.

The idea of giving John a backstory seems to me a terrible idea. The whole point is that he's just a guy. A normal cop.

But yeah there.

  • Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid: Lord Drakkon is a faithful adaptation of his dreadful comics counterpart. Choosing to side with Rita Repulsa after being freed from her spell, this alternate Tommy Oliver, christened Lord Drakkon, destroys the Rangers and eventually murders and usurps Rita, conquering his world. Unsatisfied with this, Drakkon turned his attention to the entire multiverse. Drakkon steals the powers of numerous Ranger teams to strengthen himself and enslaves any Rangers that impress him, in particular the Kimberly Hart of his world, whom he dubs his Ranger Slayer. When Finster 5 saves his life and begs him not to risk it again by empowering himself further, Drakkon brutally kills him. Murdering other versions of himself to prove he is "superior" to his "weaker" selves, he secretly knows he's the weak one, and even when the Prime Tommy Oliver tries to save his life, Drakkon chooses death over accepting help from a good version of himself and giving up his power. A tyrant unable to accept his failings, he tries to force his will on everyone and everything rather than bettering himself.

Could use some more votes on if we include a media folder for the Creepyasta page.

Here's what it'd consist of (from what I can find)...

So I was checking out the YMMV page for Casualties of War, and it appears we have an unauthorized candidate on there. I've taken it down, but I've actually seen the film quite recently and think this one is a definite keeper, so I hope nobody minds if I write up an effort post on them.

What is the Work?

Casualties of War is a movie set during the Vietnam War, and is loosely Based on a True Story about the Incident on Hill192. So without further ado, let's get into it.

Who is he? What has he done?

Corporal Tomas Clark begins the film as a loudmouthed Jerkass who frequently picks on the protagonist, Private Eriksson, for his lower rank and kindness towards Vietnamese civilians, repeatedly advocating brutal and callous measures towards them. After a firefight in which a member of the platoon is killed, Clark goes on a hate filled tirade about how the whole country should be destroyed and everyone killed off.

Clark is selected to be part of a five man team going out on a long-range patrol in the countryside. The squad leader, Sergeant Meserve, is frustrated at getting denied extra leave time, and hatches a plan to kidnap a Vietnamese woman to be their personal Sex Slave. Clark is an enthusiastic supporter of the plan, and directly participates in the kidnapping of a woman from a village the squad passes through. Once the squad finds an abandoned house to use as a base, everyone except Eriksson takes turns gang-raping the girl, Clark being the most vicious, taking joy in menacing her with a knife the entire time. Once the squad encounters a VC patrol and radios in chopper support, Meserve realizes that they can't be seen with the girl or else they could face charges, so he attempts to bully the other members of the squad into killing the girl. When the rest of the squad express reluctance (and Eriksson tries to convince them not to do it) Clark stabs the girl several times of his own volition, and finishes her off by shooting her.

Once the squad returns to base camp, Eriksson repeatedly tries to bring the crime to light, without much success. In retaliation for this, Clark attempts to kill Eriksson with a grenade when the latter goes to use the latrine. The attempt fails, and Eriksson beats Clark in the head with a shovel over it.

Eventually Eriksson tearfully describes the crime to an Army chaplain, who in turn finally gets someone to start investigating the crime. While the others express various rationales and degrees of remorse about the crime, Clark's only defense is that he doesn't deserve to be in court because he's good at killing enemy soldiers. Clark is given a life sentence, but the film ends on the possibility that he could end up paroled early and released from prison.

Mitigating Factors? Freudian Excuse?

None presented. In the same vein as Bunny from the film Platoon, Clark is just a violent animal who feels he can do whatever the hell he wants because a war is on.

Heinous Standard?

I know that a single rape, murder, and one more attempted murder is a bit low compared to other villains that pass through this thread on a daily basis, but I think Clark edges out due to sheer nastiness and glee he takes in being such a prick.

Final Verdict?

[tup]

Also I'd like to apologize if he was in fact discussed before and approved. I tried searching but I couldn't find any discussion on him prior to my post. And while I'm here I'd also like to give a definitive [tdown] for the Janitors from Hotline Miami. Those two are cogs in a machine, nothing more.

No to Clark; not heinous enough for me. I'll vote in favor of putting movies based on Creepypastas on the Creepypasta page, though.

[up][up] Not quite. Meserve saves Private Eriksson's life in the beginning of the film and lacks the crime of trying to frag a fellow soldier. Of the two Clark is the more heinous.

As a lover of war films, i have to give [tdown] to Clark. Even if he's just corporal, i have seen many enlisted soldiers who are way worse. Ironically, my next candidate will be another war criminal.

I'd be an hypocrite if I said no to Clark : I got approved a character that essentially abused his daughter and wife for ten years (heck, the latter was already a Broken Bird by the time the story started) before attempting to rape the former when she was only 16.

In comparison, Clark... Enthusiastic supporter of genocide, manages to stand out amongst rapists, stabbed their victim several times instead of immediately finishing her off, and tries to kill his own comrade with a freaking grenade? I'll say yea there.
