Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I will propose cutting Orsi Brothers from Never Again List.

This is the only time they were discussed as potential Complete Monsters:

It's more likely that someone would propose Marco Barbarigo than those two.

If you feel that they didn't warranted the place in NA list then go ahead... I don't see what's the fuss on the Orsi Brothers tbh as opposed to the likes of say... people discussing Griffith, Shou Tucker, Sponge Bob, Family Guy or even South Park.

[tup] Oleg.

Sure I'm fine with the cut.

So I was rechecking Hunchback of Notre Dame and I still get chills with Frollo, especially the scene where Esmeralda passes out from the smoke during her execution. I wonder if you ever have that chill with any CM before?

I also remember having chills with the scene in Selector Spread Wixoss where Ulith does her monologue and whispers to a girl she has gotten kidnap that she wouldn't do something so crude as kill someone with brute force, rather it's more fun to push them to the point where they will end their own lives instead as the girl looks at the screen while crying and expressing a face full of fear. The dark angles, the unnerving music, the cold voice of Ulith, I just can't believe such a thing.

There's also the scene where Joker brutally beats down Jason Todd. The movie was amazing and that scene really sold me.

Okay, here's my rewrite for Jocelyn. I slightly altered Simon's entry too in order to make it easier to read.

  • The Walking Dead
    • Simon, from the second half of season 6 to season 8, is Negan's right-hand man and the most vicious and bloodthirsty member of the Saviors. Seeing gratuitous slaughter and twisted mind games as the only solution against revolting communities, Simon makes his debut after having just finished wiping out an entire community of survivors, before beating and lynching the remaining survivor as an example for Rick's group. When Negan sends Simon to make another deal with the Scavengers and kill one for betraying them, he massacres the whole community instead while forcing their leader to watch. During Negan's absence, Simon leads his men towards Hilltop with the intent on exterminating them all. When Maggie tries to blackmail him by using his captured men as hostages, Simon simply dismisses them as "damaged goods" and attacks the colony while they are on the line of fire. Simon has his men smear their weapons with walker blood, ensuring that it would infect all the wounded. He is also the one behind the tragedy of the Oceanside, having massacred their entire male population above the age of ten for revolting against Negan's rule, which disgusted even Negan himself. After Negan's return, Simon tries to launch coup against him, despite Negan having forgiven him for his atrocities multiple times.
    • Jocelyn, from season 9's "Scars" is a former friend of Michonne's and the leader of a cult of child soldiers she herself has kidnapped and brainwashed to do her bidding. Initially taken in as a wounded survivor within Alexandria Safe Zone, Jocelyn first comes across as supporting and amiable before kidnapping young Judith Grimes and killing another Alexandrian resident. When Daryl and Michonne follow her, they are imprisoned and tortured by Jocelyn's children with Jocelyn gloating that "the children can't be soft". Jocelyn sends her children after Michonne when she manages to let loose, with all of them trying to slice open her pregnant stomach, while Jocelyn escapes and tries to save her own skin. When this fails, she tries to kill Michonne herself. Even after her death, the remaining children swear loyalty to Jocelyn and try to kill Michonne while having Judith kidnapped. While only a minor villain, Jocelyn's encounter leaves Michonne with deep physical and emotional scars.

So yeah, here is my post. I just finished Story Mode on the game and I think he qualifies, so I'm making this EP.

What's The Work?

Black Clover: Quartet Knights which is a third person magical shooter game adaptation of Black Clover. In terms of whether or not it's canon is debatable but I'm pretty sure it isn't canon despite it being an original story by the author of the manga.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Lord Freese, known as Freese the Seer, is the Big Bad of the game. Once a commoner, Freese became known as a powerful Mage and Knight due to his Magic's ability to predict the future and change the tides of battle, leading to him amassing great wealth and becoming a Noble of the Clover Kingdom, pledging his allegiance to the King. He also had a wife who gave birth to their daughter Karna and they lived a successful and content life. However it turns out that Freese's Magic wasn't clairvoyant and rather the Magic of an amulet he obtain sometime in his youth and used its power to become a great Mage and become wealthy.

The Nobles of the Clover Kingdom saw this as a insult to their kingdom as it's not his power but the power of a Magic item. Led by the noble Mineth, a bunch of nobles stormed his manor, setting it ablaze. Freese was able to send his daughter 14 years into the future but was killed, and whether or not intentional, Mineth gave Freese the idea that the King was the one responsible for this. Enraged and filled with hate upon his death and his consciousness was absorbed into his amulet which was taken by Mineth.

14 years later, a young Yami and Karna, who became a member of Yami's group, broke into Mineth's manor and Karna found the amulet, in which the wrathful consciousness of Freese possessed her and supposedly killed Mineth and went to the future, accidently taking young Yami with him. Freese almost kills the young Yami but his future self intervenes and fights Freese. When Freese lets Karna take back control, Yami promises to kill Karna if Freese can't be resisted anymore. Freese takes control of Karna and goes into the Kingdom where he controls a bunch of Magic Knights, forcing them to attack their allies.

Yami, through a delicate plan by him and the Wizard King Julius, tags along with Karna/Freese. Freese forces Yami into fighting his colleagues and allies under the threat of not holding back and killing them, making Yami look like a traitor. When Yuno, Klaus and Mimosa encounter them, Yami and Freese defeat them and he decides to use Yuno and Klaus as slaves and almost kills Mimosa but is stopped by Yami who convinces him to let her go and warn the others.

Freese also reveals that he has made an alliance with the Eye of the Midnight Sun to destroy the Clover Kingdom by breaking Mana seals across the land, allowing Mana to spring up from the Earth so Freese can use the Red Moon, which appears once a century, to gain enough power to destroy the Kingdom and exacted his revenge. After Yami fights Vetto and Fana, Freese sends Yami to the future where he succeeds and fights a future Licht and wins, then uses the buried amulet to travel back in time.

Freese, after Asta and gang free Yuno and Klaus from his control, goes to the Clover Kingdom to gather all the Mana and gain power from the Red Moon. When Yami shows up to assist Asta and his younger self, Freese uses the Red Moon's power to transform him and Karna into a large dog-like monster and attempts to destroy everyone. This leads to Asta and young Yami being forced to kill Karna along with her father.

However it turns out in Yami's Story, he uses a future version of the amulet to save her and lets her go without telling anyone the truth to protect her.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

Whatever redeeming factors he had at the start are now long gone. His consciousness has been consumed and filled with nothing but rage and hate, only now wanting to destroy the Clover Kingdom, not just the Nobles responsible for his death but everyone else who wasn't even involved. When Yami asks "What about the civilians?", Freese's only response is "Can the dead enter the kingdom?" in a cold and uncaring way as to say to Yami "I don't give a shit about the civilians, they can all die for all I care, they're part of the same kingdom that betrayed me."

Before his death he cared about his daughter, but his thirst for revenge and hate for the Clover Kingdom have made him cast aside all love and care he had for Karna, shown that when Karna found the amulet his consciousness was in, he wasn't overjoyed to see her and be reunited, he was overjoyed that he could have a chance at revenge and saw Karna as only a vessel to carry it out. He constantly and gleefully mocks Yami about not being able to kill her, and when he allows he to say her goodbyes to young Yami and uses the time to ask him to kill her, he simply laughs and calls her a stupid girl.

Heinousness

He is the main focal point of the story, so anything the Eye of the Midnight Sun have done don't count in this game, as he's the Big Bad not them.

Many of his heinous acts include using his daughter as a vessel and more or less mentally abusing her while possessing her. He has mind controlled various Magic Knights, including Yuno and Klaus into being his puppets and is willing to kill and massacre innocent people, not to mention forced Yami into attacking his allies to save them from being killed by Freese's own hands.

His going One-Winged Angel and proceeding to slaughter everyone is also pretty damn heinous and shows him reaching the breaking point, not caring if his daughter dies but so long as the Kingdom is destroyed.

Final Verdict

Personally I think he qualifies, but let's see what you guys think.

Doesn't sound like there's much that'd be concerning with the heinous standard, especially given the game's ambiguous canonicity, and it sounds like any potentially concerning qualities involving Karna end up moot. Saying "yes" to Freese.

Thinking yes to Freese.

So this will go here:

  • Netflix anime
    • Alien Adacic is an alien Serial Killer Shinjiro is sent to terminate. Adacic is introduced in a room full of corpses he's drained of blood while gleefully finishing off the latest of many such massacres he's committed. Leading the fight into the city, Adacic intentionally stops the chase and fights Shinjiro in the middle of a crowded street. When the teenager Rena tries to encourage Shinjiro, Adacic tries to murder her out of boredom and soon begins blowing up the area and endangering countless civilians in the process. When his arm is sliced off, Adacic goes berserk and decides he'll eat every civilian in the area out of spite. Despite being the first Monster of the Week, Adacic proves one of the worst and most sadistic in the entire series.
    • Ace Killer is the leader of Ace Killer Squad. A sociopathic mercenary, he's the true perpetrator of the airline explosion that kick-started the series, killing most of those on board, children included, an act which for him was simply an average day on the job. When Moroboshi and Shinjiro track him down, Ace Killer's trap kills Moroboshi's entire squad, something which the mercenary couldn't care less about. Despite not being part of his current job, Ace Killer decides to kill the two anyway for his own amusement, and tortures both Shinjiro and Seiji, assuring the latter his childhood friend Yuko is next on his list. After being temporarily killed by Seiji, Ace Killer decides to brutalize the already mortally wounded boy and mount his skull in his trophy room. Even in death, Ace Killer tries to destroy the entire area with a massive bomb in one final act of spite. Despite being a hired soldier, Ace Killer enjoys every second of it and cares for nothing else, not even his own squad.
