Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Well, it was worth a shot.

I am not really surprised. The Heinous Standard in that game is fucking ridiculous.

Based on the EP, [tdown] to 153 for reasons of lack of heinousness.

@SkyCat Sorry. I often consider lack of heinousness the weakest reason to not include someone because if their personality is unapologetic enough and the disturbed factor is there, it should mean more than that.

I at first thought Ego's death was more of a relief than it was satisfying, but then I realized: the human form of Kurt Russell (basically his consciousness) is the relief, the planet, his actual physical form, collapsing on itself is actually VERY satisfying.

You do realize I suggested the bit about crimes standing out to the laconic, right?

And being insufficiently heinous is not a weak reason to exclude a candidate. It's quality control.

Anyways, I wasn't expecting the CEO to go up, if only because he is offscreen for most of the games, but since he's behind it all, he made the cut, while 153 & 154 did not. Also, the cruel experiments conducted by Systems Corp. are happening under his auspices, which puts him way above standard villains.

Let's move on.

@Future: We cant just add every candiate for being an ass. They need to either be unique or bad enough for the series. The whole reasons that I didnt ep characters like Parker, Hope, John Blackmore or Jean Chastel from Mercy Thompson because while personality wise there douche bags or damn creepy, heinous wise there no where near the level of the current seven keepers.

@future What miraculous said. There might be legitimate grounds for debate regarding how heinousness should be judged, but it's one of the most important factors in determining whether a character counts as a CM IMO.

@miraculous, @Imperial Yeah, I suppose it's more how I used to feel rather than how I feel now. I think I'm a lot more accepting now.

@SkyCat I meant the part about Ego.

@Lighty I got you started (that includes slight edits to Moriarty's entry as well). Also put them in the drafts too for convenience:

  • Sherlock Holmes duology:
    • Sherlock Holmes (2009): Lord Henry Blackwood
    • Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows: Professor James Moriarty, dubbed "The Napoleon of Crime" by Holmes, is a heartless criminal mastermind, as well as Holmes's equal and opposite in terms of intellect. After fatally poisoning Irene Adler to remove her from his employ, Moriarty makes it clear that he has no intention of sparing Watson or Watson's wife Mary if Holmes continues to interfere with his plans. True to his word, Moriarty tries to have Watson and Mary killed, destroying the train they were travelling on in the process. Engineering a plot to jumpstart World War I so that he can profit from the bloodshed through the sale of munitions, Moriarty enacts this plot through manipulation and murder, staging a series of bombings to increase tensions between nations, driving a French revolutionary to suicide, and having his henchman, Sebastian Moran, assassinate a businessman so Moriarty can acquire his company, killing many others in an explosion to conceal the murder. After capturing Holmes, Moriarty brutally tortures him with a meat hook, calmly singing Schubert as he does, going on to massacre many of Madame Simza's Gypsy tribe when they rescue Holmes. Having forced Simza's brother to act as an assassin, Moriarty plans to kill a dignitary at a peace summit to incite war. After this plan is thwarted and his assets are seized by the police, Moriarty intends to kill Holmes and his friends in revenge, only being stopped when Holmes throws them both over a waterfall. Ruthless, sadistic, callous, and cruel, Moriarty stands out as the most dangerous criminal Holmes has ever encountered.

So, it looks like no then. I guess that's fair.

I understand that you need to have rules in place for a trope like this, which is based on a definition of absolute badness. Because lots of people would want to declare so-and-so character a Complete Monster every time they see someone Kick the Dog and that's not what the trope is.

I just feel like you've over-corrected.

But whatever. I can also see that you've been doing this since 2010 at least and I'm not arrogant enough to think you'll change it just because I say so.

And come to think of it, Gus probably doesn't count anyway, because of a certain scene where he steals a music box and is described as feeling at peace for a while, which implies he could at least be placated and therefore might not meet the "irredeemable" qualification.

Nicky is The Dreaded to the mob. At first, but this is savagely torn apart and he ends up exposed as the joke he truly is.

  • Monsters by Eiichiro Oda: Legendary swordsman and supposed hero Cyrano and his partner D.R are corrupt conmen who have an artifact to control a dragon. Having murdered a garrison under Cyrano's command years ago, the two set the dragon on a town to kill everyone, murdering stragglers themselves, to rob the place. Cyrano, upon seeing a young girl beg him to save her family, murdered her parents himself and used her to enhance his reputation as a hero. In the present, the two attempt to unleash the dragon on a new town to rob it and conceal the evidence as well as kill any witnesses who get in the way.
  • Exiles: King Hyperion is a vicious superhuman from a world that he tried to conquer, resulting in a massive nuclear suicide that left him the only being alive. Later attempting to conquer a new world, he instead allows it to die thanks to that world's Magneto's actions, betraying heroes and slipping through new worlds where he kills countless beings to conquer their lands. Arriving in a parallel New York, he tries to kill one hundred hostages after murdering all the heroes therein, betraying and slaughtering his own if it suits him. Returning at the Timebreakers' headquarters, Hyperion plans to conquer the multiverse, no matter how many he has to kill along the way.
  • Squadron Supreme: John M'butu is a metahuman general in Uganda who leads brutal purges of civilian populations, with rape and murder all-too common. Allying with foreign interests to keep a civil war going, M'butu initiates a genocide of rival tribes to strengthen himself and uses his Compelling Voice to control others, boasting he can use it to rape women or force men to die for him in the process.
  • Call for Corpse Brides: Seemingly a respected pillar of the community, Martin Thoben is a callous marijuana dealer and white slave trader who uses marijuana to get women high and helpless before abducting them and faking their deaths. Once he has done so, he instead ships them out of the country into sex slavery, having done this to many unfortunate women while plotting to expand his operation throughout the Five Points to take even more, even trying to murder anyone else who uncovers his horrible business.
  • Sherlock Holmes: The wicked Lord Henry Blackwood murders five women in occult rituals and is stopped from a sixth, though it is later revealed he has butchered far more. Supposedly returning from the dead, Blackwood begins purging his former Temple of the Four Orders organization of those insufficiently loyal, cruelly killing his own father and burning another man alive. Intending on starting a massive war to strengthen Britain and reclaim America, Blackwood intends on injecting cyanide gas into Parliament to kill all those there, except for his most loyal followers, standing as one of the most sinister and vile foes Holmes ever encounters.
  • Theseus: Sciron and Sinis are a pair of bandits Thesus dispatches as part of his labors, and are two of the most vile of their type found in Greek mythology. Violators of hospitality, with sadistic operating procedures, Sciron lures travelers into paying tolls before throwing them to a giant turtle lurking below the rocks, while Sinis ties them between pine trees to have them ripped apart, both having a great number of victims until Thesus himself arrives.
  • Sumerican myth: Lamashtu is the daughter of the benevolent god Anu. A savage monster who rejects all goodness, Lamashtu causes famines and droughts, spreading pestilence and disease in the process. Not content with this, Lamashtu induces miscarriages and will steal infants to murder them while also murdering pregnant women and innocent young mortals, rending them apart to eat them herself. So vile is Lamashtu that even another demon like Pazuzu may be invoked against her, being the most terrifying and remorseless monster in the entire pantheon.

  • Blood books
    • Anwar Tawfik is a mummy wizard priest who worships the god Akhekh after losing status and power after Set was cast down. Reviving in the present down, Anwar begins devouring the Ka of citizens, absorbing their life and souls while plotting a massive sacrifice to summon Akhekh for greater power. Not content with this, Anwar roams the streets, murdering those he encounters but with a special love for the life of children. Anwar targets and drains children, even killing a baby he passes at one point, all because he savors their lost lives all the more.
    • Dr. Mui is an organ trafficker who sees a way to more money than her more sympathetic employer Ronald Swanson intended. Targeting the poor and desperate, Mui brings them in to supposedly draw blood and perhaps donate a kidney, but drugs them, drains them of blood and removes the organs to sell on the black market before discarding the bodies. Mui begins killing a great deal of innocents, plotting to simply blame Swanson and skip out with the money, slowly draining detective Mike Celluci of blood when he uncovers her activities as well.
