During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So, now that I'm done with Moriarty and that's he's been approved last week, here's the entry (been late due to personal problems):

The Code Lyoko fanfiction The Games of Moriarty: Moriarty is Franz Hopper's former colleague and Anthea's ex-boyfriend. A sadistic individual loving to play with people's minds, Moriarty starts with forcing the Lyoko-warriors to "play" his mind games, in which the Lyoko-warriors are forced to make sadistic choices which often involves killing people close to them (Yumi's game has her being forced to either kill her boyfriend Ulrich or her little brother). A mind rapist, he is responsible for Jeremie's Start of Darkness (by showing him the future under his rule), Odd's brainwashing and consequent PTSD (all the while using a "treatment" so horrifying even the Brainwashed and Crazy Odd is absolutely terrified by it). After appearing on Earth, he eventually starts a fascist movement called the Order, frames the French Muslim population for his later attacks, and doesn't hesitate to let Order members getting caught in the crossfire caused by his attacks. He also hacks the Return to the Past protocol in order to prevent the heroes from repairing any damage done by his attacks, and his attacks often involves mass murder, such as brainwashing an Arab in order to blow up a bus, or spreading a deadly flu in the entire city when the Lyoko-warriors gives him a taste of his own medicine. A mass-murdering psychopath and lacking even more in humanity than XANA despite being human, not even politeness and charisma hides Moriarty's desires to humiliate, torture and destroy ennemy, ally and innocent alike.

Just quickly stopping by to say no one counts in the Four Week Continuous Super Sentai Strongest Battle. One of the villains is set to appear in Ryusoulger (and wouldn't count even if he wasn't going to be a villain there), Dai-Satan has somehow become even more of a GDV than he was before, and the only villain left has a surprisingly solid Freudian Excuse for being an Omnicidal Maniac, ultimately being portrayed pretty sympathetically despite being the overall Big Bad of the special.

I didn't think there would be any keepers, but I thought there was an outside chance towards the end, which is why I reserved it. Then the last episode happened and made it clear no one counted.

On a related note, provided no one's done so already (and it's not on the discussion date list, so I assume it hasn't), I'm gonna reserve Ryusoulger.

"become even more of a GDV than he was before"...Is that even POSSIBLE?

Out of curiosity, what's the Omnicidal Maniac's FE?

The only way I can imagine a villain being even more of a GDV is if there only real charachter trait was having an Evil Laugh and then they lose even that.

[up][up][up] She grew up on what was apparently an extreme Crapsack World. Children died on the regular, and the few people who tried to help ended up failing and making things even worse than before. She eventually crossed the Despair Event Horizon and decided that the universe should be subject to a Mercy Kill, setting the whole plot up to summon Dai-Satan.

On a related note, her name is Rita. Even before her plan to summon the Ultimate Evil of Zyuranger was revealed, pretty much everyone knew she was evil because of that name.

[up] Yeah, Kylo? That's literally what happened. Dai-Satan's only communication in Zyuranger was through evilly laughing, but it at least helped paint him as the local Satanic figure. Here, he doesn't even have that when he's finally revived. He's nothing more than a glorified superweapon now. It's so bad that he wasn't even the final boss of the special, with Rita putting on the Ryusoulger villain (he's actually Animated Armor, so it makes sense) and doing a Last Villain Stand.

In a way, I'm kinda impressed with how they made Dai-Satan even more generic than before.

So I am going to cover what should be the last of the 90s Marvel novel villains, ironically from one of the first novels of the series, Spider-Man: Venom Factor, which is the start of a trilogy of novels. Now this novel does not feature of the usual suspects as the main villain and potential monster, although he certainly has a reputation as a scum bag. Behold the Horror of the Hobgoblin!

Who is the Hobgoblin? What has he done?

So since this novel was released in 1994, this would be the Jason Macendale Hobgoblin, not Roderick Kingsley or any of his brainwashed stand-ins.

As usual, Macendale is a self-centered money-grubbing sociopath, but in this novel, his scheme is far bigger than anything he did in the comics.

Spidey catches Hobgoblin stealing radioactive waste from a warehouse, Spidey tries to stop him, but Hobgoblin uses a chemical to knock out Spidey's spider sense.

Hobgoblin later tries to steal more radioactive materials and a detonator from a US military sub. Hobgoblin steals these items and puts a gas bomb on the sub, designed to go off and kill everyone on the sub. Spidey launches the gas bomb into the air, but Hobgoblin escapes again.

Hobgoblin has also been dumping nuclear waste into the sewers and subway tunnels, which is important because an alien who looks a lot like Venom is on the loose. This alien feeds on radioactive materials and has been eating homeless people because they have radioactive poisoning due to Hobgoblin's toxic waste dumping. There is also a company called CCRC that is illegally dumping nuclear waste around NYC (secretly run by Dr. Octopus, but that only becomes relevant in the third book of this novel trilogy). People think Venom is guilty of the alien's crimes and Venom becomes enraged (he is in Anti Hero mode nowadays).

Anyway, Hobgoblin tries to steal more radioactive materials from Empire State University. Spidey catches him, but Venom shows up, intending to kill Hobgoblin. While Spidey and Venom fight, Hobgoblin escapes with the items he wanted.

Later Hobgoblin delivers a videotape to the news media, informing the people of New York that he has constructed a dirty nuclear bomb, powerful enough to blow Manhattan to bits and spread deadly radiation to the rest of NYC, New Jersey, maybe even Baltimore and Albany. The city has 12 hours to give him 1 billion dollars or Hobgoblin sets off the nuke.

Anyway, Spidey finds Hobgoblin's lair and there is a big fight between Spidey, Hobgoblin, Venom and the alien. Eventually, the alien decides to eat Hobgoblin's nuke, which pisses Hobgoblin off. Hobgoblin tries to set off the nuke out of spite over his plans being ruined, but the alien has damaged it so much, that bomb is now inactive. Anyway, the alien is destroyed after eating the nuke, Spidey captures Hobgoblin and delivers him to the cops.

Is he heinous by the standards of the story?

He is the worst guy in this novel. Venom is in anti-hero mode and the alien is a mindless creature who kills out of hunger. Hobgoblin's plan involved killing millions of people and dumping toxic waste and trying to kill everyone on the sub was pretty nasty.

Now in this trilogy, we have Dr. Octopus trying to nuke most of humanity to deal overpopulation (that makes no sense, but whatever) and this is set in the 90s Marvel-verse that features mass murdering psychos like Maestro, MODOK, Mr. Sinister, Baron Strucker, Balesaco, etc. Also, guys like Kang tried to wipe out most of the multiverse.

But Hobgoblin is a street thug with some gimmicks, he has way fewer resources than those guys (Ock runs a corporation and has an army of goons, while Hobgoblin has a gang of 3 to 4 henchmen). It's revealed by the third book that he is getting help from O Ck, but he is still the worst street level villain in this series, he has a bigger intended body count then Carnage and most other street-level villains do not come close to having this kind of potential body count.

Heck Norman Osborn appears in a novel and does not come close to being as heinous as Hobgoblin is here. Ock may be helping him, but a lot of this is still his idea.

Any Freudian Excuse or other redeeming qualities?

So Hobgoblin was building himself an underground lair in NYC so that he could hide there after he got the billion so that people would be looking elsewhere for him and wouldn't realize he was in NYC all along until the heat died down, which suggests he would not have activated the nuke if he got the billion. But he was still willing to use the nuke if he didn't get the money and the end of the book revealed the city government had no ability or intention of paying him. The fact that Hobgoblin tried to set off the nuke out of spite, shows Hobgoblin means business here.

And even though he is ultimately Doc Ock's pawn, this whole blackmail scheme seems like his idea, Ock just helped because it suited his purposes.

Besides that, no FE, he is a jerk to his men and has no redeeming qualities.

Final Verdict?

I say yes to good old Hobby.

Actually, not just ONE of the first, it was THE first of the 90s Marvel novels. And (if Wikipedia is correct), aside from a Howard the Duck novelization, the first Marvel novel in 15 years.

Huh, I'd forgotten about Hobby dumping the waste as well.

Anyway, even though he was indeed being manipulated by Doc Ock (who doesn't count; I posted his Motive Rant from the third book and it was determined he was a WIE), I'll give a yes to Hobby. He's basically a glorified street thug (basically on the same tier as Carnage; the only one on a LOWER tier is the Rooftop Ripper), who punches WELL above his weight class. There's no sign he was bluffing or that he was JUST a pawn of Ock, so nothing to disqualify him.
