Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

One more, btw, from Coujin Sensen.

Okay, so...FEE? Has finished with her selection game. The deathmatches have concluded and the victors stand chosen. The purpose is revealed...FEE, a being from beyond a 'Gate', is in competition with another being named MATE who takes the form of a black cat. FEE and MATE are aiming to uncover warriors to pit against one another for the fate of the world, But MATE? His warriors are artificial beings called Carbinoids who are superpowered revivals of some of the greatest geniuses and generals in history. Their leader is Leonardo da Vinci. Also among their number is Charles Darwin as an Affably Evil Evil Brit who fights with evolution (IE: he can turn a bird into a T-rex. That's how he rolls) One of them is the first one who challenges FEE's team....and his name? Isaac.

Who is Isaac?

Isaac is introduced smugly eating an apple, deciing to mess with his opponent, the Esper with telekinesis, a young man named Rinji? Isaac proceeds to use his powers to throw the apple and...make it a gravity core, collapsing a huge section of Tokyo in on itself, killing thounsads, including Rinju's family. Just for fun. Isaac is the most unpleasant of the Seven Carbinoids, to put it mildly. He's soon matched to Rinji in his fight as the others watch, with the fight taking place near Mount Fuji.

Isaac proves he's just as sadistic in actual battle, using his gravity powers to torture the hell out of Rinji, deciding to kill him slowly while laughing all the while. Now...apples, gravity powers? Maybe you guessed who Isaac is. That's right: Isaac Newton!

Isaac then reveals what he's in for...Renaissance II, L Eonardo's plan, which involve collapsing part of the dimensional Gate on earth, so Leonardo can help to 'reset' the world and guide humanity. Thing is? Isaac's just in for fun and kicks, because Renaissance II will kill ninety-five percent of humanity, which Isaac finds hilarious. Rinji manages to fight back against Isaac and even hold his own with his telekinesis, but Isaac keeps with the edge, constantly trying to torture him more and having fun doing so. Oh, and Isaac uses his powers to cause Mt. Fuji to blow, causing massive devastation and death from that.

Rinji finally gets the better of Isaac's sadistic ass by using his telekinesis to manipulate the weather, forcing Isaac to put up a barrier but using the electromagnetic bursts with to cause a mini electrical storm inside Isaac's shield, literally cooking him alive. Still alive, Isaac tries to knock Rinji into the volcano, but Rinji manages to get free and escape, leaving Isaac to plummet to the lava below, as the matches continue.

Heinous Standard and Mitigating Qualities?

Isaac goes, happily along with a plan to kill the majority of humanity, he kills hundreds of people for kicks and causes Mt. Fuji to erupt. He's also noticeably far worse than the other six of the Carbinoids...and let me say quickly agency is no issue. Leonardo has benevolent intentions in the long run, even if they're awful. Charles Darwin is Affably Evil and gives his opponent full respect even after he wins, and the rest are nowhere near nasty enough. Isaac just kills hundreds of people just to say hello and is an unpleasant asshole the whole way through who displays no care even for his own team.

Conclusion?

Jesus's Evil Twin and now, Isaac Newton. This is a strange day.

Ah yeah... Today's the discussion of Golden Kamuy.... My opinion: I'm siding with Lighty on this one. The closest one for being keeper on this trope is Ienaga, but even then... He performs a weird relationship with one of Hijikata's subordinates. Though even then, I will probably look forward to the second season on that. And also, despite having no C Ms... I felt that there is a potential MB keeper... Well at least for me.

Someone recently made a revision for the Other Player in the Ar Nosurge YMMV page, which I think is better written and does correct a few mistakes I made in the entry. It still doesn't change their position a Complete Monster.

Midnight.

So it has been two weeks since the release of The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, a game brought to us by Dontnod, the folks that brought us Life Is Strange and Vampyr.

And as much as I would love to say the game features a human/arms/drug trafficking plot masterminded by Nyarlathotep, or plays on the theory that Jack the Ripper and HH Holmes are one and the same, I must say that such things don't occur in this game. Also there are no new contenders...yet.

For those who were not aware of the advertising, the game is a one shot prologue to the upcoming Life Is Strange 2 which is not set to continue the story of Max and Chloe of the first two games (that's gonna be for the upcoming comic Life Is Strange Dust). This game is mean to establish who and what's to come LIS 2 and will supposedly have loose if any connections to the previous games at all.

Here we are introduced to Chris Eriksen, who seemingly is set to be the protagonist of LIS 2 and a nine to ten year old boy -at least at the time of this game- who has an active imagination, and is trying to come to terms with his mother's death by hit and run. The game is pretty short and mundane, since it's basically Chris going through the morning and noon, having imaginary adventures with the superhero persona "Captain Spirit". That is up until he apparently discovers he has actual powers (telekinesis by the looks of it) at the end of the game. But the actual adventures Chris has in this game is in his imagination, akin to the kind we see in Rugrats.

So yeah not so much a story that would have a CM in it, but rather set the stage for the next story. As far as antagonists go...

1. There's Chris' alcoholic father Charles, who is shown here as a Troubled Abuser, who seems to want to better himself if not for his alcoholism. He at least tries to be a good father to Chris and pretty regretful when he begins to go into Abusive Parent mode. He never physically beats Chris beyond the implication that he injured his arm at some point in the past. He clearly cares about his wife and during a drunken rant towards Chris, let's it slip he may resent the boy for reminding him of his mother, and supposedly blames Chris for his mother's death due to Chris needing to be picked up at the time of the accident. Still nothing to get excited about - IMO he's not even a Hate Sink character, but it would seem the fandom disagrees with me.

2. There's Mandroid, an Imaginary Enemy Chris made up as a villain in his adventures. Mandroid is used as a outlet for Chris to deal with his problems, primarily his grief of his mother as we see the name "Mandroid" comes from combining the street names at the corner where she die. In short, Mandroid is pretty much a Dark Master or Red Knight type figure.

3. Then there's a pseudo cameo by Mark Jefferson in which the player can discover a magazine that contains his...photography art, which I think is supposed to imply the Chris' mother was a fan of his or may have been one of his models. At the very least, a Mythology Gag reveals she was an alumni of Blackwell Academy in Arcadia Bay.

And that's what we got so far. Life Is Strange 2 will begin this September. I already got dibs on that and Life Is Strange Dust.

[tup] Isaac. I gotta read this now...Lots of fighting, Isaac Newton as a villain...oh, and hot naked purple-haired lady.

Here's that revised entry. I'll use it:

  • Ar nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star: The "other player", much like the Player Character, has the power of Interdimend, the ability to visit and control a being from another dimension in order to interact with the world. Unlike the player character trying to save the world, this player's goal is to send Nero back to her world, although the other player goes about doing it in the most callous way possible. Controlling Prim, the mind-child of protagonist Delta and Cass, he first assists Zill in her plan of creating the Maternal Overseer, a being that can absorb souls, to pull off her goal of making everyone's being into one consciousness. Once Zill has let herself be part of the Maternal Overseer, the other player makes their move to destroy the world while taunting Delta and Cass by using their own daughter as an avatar to do all of this, with each plan being stopped by the player character's interference. Once all the conflicts were about to be solved, the other player makes their final move by trying to eliminate everyone, using a giant mecha dragon they made and to convert every being into energy. This is where it is revealed that they plan to get enough energy to bring Nero back to their world to "complete the game in a 100%" from their side. When confronted by everyone, including the player character themselves about this not being a game, the other player shows that they knew but didn't care. They would destroy and kill thousands of residents of another universe just out of amusement and their own selfishness. It is also heavily implied that the other player was the one who almost killed Ion in her home world and forced her to send her soul to Ra Ciela.

I found this about Life is Strange's CM (no spoil). I don't think either qualify.

  • Even Evil Has Standards: He will occasionally apologize for his outbursts towards Max or Rachel during his eccentric moments, specially after calling Max a "dumb cunt." He also shows great disgust with Victoria when she propositions him.
