Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

As promised, here's the second Helldriver candidate.

Who Is he?

Yasushi Miyata is Rikka’s Neo-Nazi brother (he wears the red armbands, has a swastika on his jacket, and later gets a swatstika branded on his forehead), and a serial killing cannibal just like her sister, having killed 20 people and ate their bodies alongside her.

What has he done?

First seen cooking and eating Kika’s father’s legs, he laughs at Kika’s father as he’s being burned alive by Rikka. As Kika runs away from him and Rikka, he chases after her, tossing knives at her to slow her down, managing to land a hit on her shoulder. When two police officers show up to kill him and Rikka, he chucks knives at their necks, killing them. Getting cocooned along with Rikka and Kika, he is freed by the zombified Rikka to serve as her zombie second-in-command.

The leader of a zombie base at a bar, he has humans locked up in cages to be later fed to him and his zombies. He takes No-Name’s sister Maya, chains her down to a chair, and has his zombies hold her in place (this also being in a freezer that has many hanging, eaten corpses). Yasushi himself takes a bite out of Maya’s leg and nipples; she later manages to die her via bleeding to death. When Kika and her team arrive, take Maya, and attempt to make a getaway, Yasushi jumps onto their van and orders them to “feed me!”. He is impaled on a stump on the ground, but manages to get himself out and chases after Kika and co. while taunting her about how delicious she’s going to be. Kaito (a cowboy the gang met on their quest) drives his van and rams every zombie in his path; Yasushi collects the flying body parts and makes a fully functional car out of them (you really can’t make this stuff up). He chops his own hand off just so he could have it drive his “car” while he leaps onto Kaito’s van to take him out, before jumping back to his own car to kill Kika.

Supposedly dying by having Kika shove her revved up chainsaw katana up his ass, Taku driving the meat machine off a cliff, and exploding it with the zombie’s horns, his head and spinal cord end up surviving, as they fly off and land in a tree. After Rikka’s giant zombie has taken off in the sky, Yasushi notices the giant specimen and has the dimwitted zombie chuck his head toward the flying giant and lands on a headless zombie body (one that Kika ripped the head out of earlier) so that he can fight Kika, chucking exploding zombie heads at her. He manages to get kicked in the groin by Kika and lands on the missile. Bidding Kika farewell, he kills himself by jumping into the missile’s jet turbine, causing it to explode. He knew that his time as a zombie was ending, so he decided to kill himself.

Redeeming Qualities?

He calls his sister “awesome” after she rips Kika’s heart from her body, and used to praise her for getting him amazing pudding. Aside from that, he’s shown to care for himself, only like Rikka because she’s a psychopathic nutcase like him, and because she got him something he liked (besides, the pudding was meant to be for Kika); his affection is nothing but shallow and fake.

Heinousness?

While he’s just an ordinary zombie, he manages to make other zombies look tame in comparison, having been a nasty individual even before he became a zombie, and is the leader of the division that captures humans, one that he created himself. Plus, he’s technically a Nazi zombie, the only one in the movie. And just like most zombies, he’s shown to be self-aware; he loves being a zombie because it means that he can feast on anybody he wants without any consequences.

Conclusion

I think he’s also a keeper, but I'll let you guys decide.

Anyways, expect an EP sooner or later. As I'm still unsure if this character could count or not.

So I was browsing the CM tv pages when I found this entry that's not on the series ymmv page oddly enough

  • Home and Away Johnny Cooper and his group of surfers survive solely on the proceeds of armed robberies, and worse, he coerces his brother Rocco into helping them despite the latter's desire to go straight. When Rocco betrays him and puts him in jail, he has him killed by another member of the gang and then torments Rocco's foster brother after he is falsely convicted of his murder. A year later, he breaks out and attempts to kill Sally because she turned Rocco against him, while holding her brother hostage during the confrontation. Finally, he blackmails Sam into hiding him, possibly raping her offscreen at one point. Unlike villains like Sarah Lewis and Eve Jacobsen, there is never any suggestion of Johnny having a Freudian Excuse.

[tup] Sushi.

So I found this at the Alas, Poor Villain trope page

  • Xenoblade:
    • Subverted with Big Bad Egil, creator and master of the Mechon. He began as a kindhearted ruler, but an unprovoked attack on his peaceful people, killing most of them, led to him going mad with revenge. When Shulk and the others find out that he's a Well-Intentioned Extremist, their hatred diminishes, and they try from that point onward to convince him to let go of his hatred. They succeed, but then the Big Bad's Dragon shows up, ultimately forcing Egil into Redemption Equals Death.
    • Played straighter with Dickson, The Dragon (or the head Co-Dragon) of the Big Bad. The actions he takes seem to be designed to make the player and characters hate him, but when he's finally defeated, right as he's about to die, he still manages to coerce a bit of sympathy, both from the player and from the main characters.
    • Played in a more subdued manner with Metal Face of all people. Just before entering Galahad Fortress, Shulk and the others finally defeat him, but after Shulk calms Dunban down when the latter tries to kill Mumkhar (Metal Face) once and for all, they opt instead to allow him to live in an act of Cruel Mercy. Mumkhar didn't take kindly to that, and ended up causing his own death by accidentally shooting a spire from Galahad Fortress and impaling himself. As he falls, the party is left with looks of slight sadness, with Dunban even topping it all off with a quote that sums it all up in six words.
Dunban: You went too far, you fool.

Should the last two examples (who are current CM's) be cut from the Alas, Poor Villain list? Or does this possibly mean anything?

[up] That whole thing's weird. Arkham!Joker is there, but it was determined his death wasn't disqualifying, so I dunno.

[up][up] That's REALLY weird. I...have NO idea what to do about that. Honestly, I'm not sure he fits the baseline (armed robberies, one murder, one attempted murder, possible offscreen rape? Not enough IMO). And speaking of villains like that, what should we do about Cambias?

I mean, with someone like Foster, the Mind Rape, murder, and attempted murder are all of teenagers.

Well from Wikipedia, this was what I was able to find out about him

Victims
  • Kendall Hart: Attempted to rape her twice
  • Erica Kane: Attempted rape
  • Bianca Montgomery: Raped; tried to rape a second time
  • Lena Kundera: Assault
  • Maggie Stone: Assault
  • Greenlee Smythe: Attempted Assault

Uh doesn't seem like enough personally

[down]I dunno. Never watched it. If I'm reading this right than it should be 3 attempted cases of Rape and one successful ?

[up] That looks quite bad, but how huge is the heinous standard for the work?

Personally I don't see Metal Face's deaths or Dickson's deaths disqualify them at all. Dickson's made him look worse (He admitted his plan to have the power of a god in that same cutscene), so axe that one immediately, and with Metal Face he was being a Sore Loser and trying to attack them after he lost in the same cutscene.

Inclined to agree with Mir, if he had more attempted rape victims or attempted murder victims under his belt it would be different but it doesn’t look like he does enough the way it is.

Okay, I've been putting this one off, time to wrap it up:

What's the work?

Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls is an anime sequel to the manga/anime Basilisk, based on the novel The Koga Ninja Scrolls by Futaro Yamada. The premise of the original is like Romeo and Juliet with ninja. Gennosuke Koga and Oboro Iga are the respective heirs of the Koga and I Ga clans, and are engaged for a peace treaty between the clans...problem is the Shogunate's succession. The Koga and Iga are tasked with providing ten warriors apiece to fight to the death, with each side championing one of the former Shogun's two grandsons.

Now, the original series ends with a total Kill Em All....when all the others are gone, including the real seris big bad and vile bastard Tenzen Yakushiji, Oboro stabs herself in the heart rather than fight Gennosuke and Gennosuke kills himself to rejoin her in the next world, but not before crossing his own name out on the list of ninja and giving the Iga the victory for his love.

Cut over a decade later....peace has been achieved by the Koga and Iga at last...and what's more? Oboro apparently survived long enough in the sequel (....somehow) to give birth to twins: Hachiro and Hibiki, the former raised by the Koga, the latter by Iga, with both resembling their paarents greatly and having their ninja techniques...Hahiro/Gennosuke has eye powers that can turn malice and killing intent back to the source, causing the enemy's suicide. Hibiki/Oboro's eyes can cancel ninja techniques or, at their best, causes paralysis and serious injury just from a glance. So, in the era of peace...someone else has very different intentions. Enter...Joujin.

Who is Joujin?

A figure who takes the shape of an elderly monk, Joujin is an incredibly powerful man who may also be demonic. We first encounter him in a flashback to the burning of Honnoji Temple, the death of Nobunaga Oda...when Joujin's voice warns Nobunaga there's another way besides just a sad death...

Flash forward years later and Joujin and his Five Bad Band, the Joujinshu are in town. In order to establish themselves, they lure out the top warriors of the Koga and Iga and massacre them, revealing they use artifacts that grant them seeming magic....one can literally reverse time, for instance. The young trainees of the Koga and Iga, each group led by Hachiro and Hibiki respectively, try to interfere and Joujin casually orders the deaths of the children, except Hachiro and Hibiki who he has plans for....however, Hachiro and Hibiki reveal a new eye power by combining their techniques: an incredible wave of energy called the Ouka. Joujin and the Joujinshu retreat. Hachiro goes on a quest to learn more, and the series has a timeskip to years later with the young Treasures and Flowers now young adults.

Meanwhile, Joujin has been attempting to resurrect Nobunaga Oda, using people as guinea pigs to contain his soul...all of them die horribly and crumble to dust and bone. Joujin realizes this requires special circumstances and begins to manipulate the Shogun Iemitsu's younger brother Lord Tadanaga, playing off his envy and jealousy for his brother to sway him into rebellion...intending to use Tadanaga as a host for Nobunaga and revive the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven.

Now, using his private army the Rain and moving Castle Murakumo, Joujin holds the other young ninja at bay for a time until the final sequence. Jouji believes the world must be 'purified' and made into a literal hell first, with most everyone dying so it can be guided to a new stage. . When Tadanaga realizes how he's been used and refuses to be a part of things any longer, Joujin orders him to commit seppuku and has him beheaded. He then proceeds to seduce Hibiki in spirit and brainwashes her into being abducted by the Joujinshu, using the ghost of her mother against her, twisting Oboro's feelings to Gennosuke and having her possess Hibiki. Hachiro arrives, and Jounin reveals his plan: to force Hibiki and Hachiro to fornicate before them and use the 'fluids' to revive Nobunaga (look, I didn't write it) ...if they refuse? He'll just go step B and have them murder each other, use the blood and use that to revive Nobunaga, while having the Joujinshu steadily eliminate the young Koga and Iga, who die bringing down each of them.

Hachiro breaks Hibiki free of Joujin's spell and puts Oboro to rest. He and Hibiki engage Joujin and badly wound him, with the help of their final mortally wounded companions. However, one of the Joujinshi, Kujaku, in truth Nobunaga's lover and right hand man Ranmaru Mori, backstabs Joujin and uses his blood to revive Nobunaga instead. Nobunaga proceeds to kill Joujin and Kujaku/Ranmaru both, being revived as a really, really bad guy (And he decides Kujaku couldn't be his 'beautiful Ranmaru' because Hachiro scarred his face)...they manage to destroy Nobunaga but Ranmaru, dying, uses his own time control that mixes with another Joujinshu member's magic to take Hibiki and Hachiro to a parallel reality.

Here? We see Joujin has used his moving castle Murakumo and is literally bombing Edo into ashes, gloating that he is making the world into hell and killing countless people. Hibiki and Hachiro intervene and manage to kill the Joujinshu besides Joujin, before using the Ouka to destroy him. Realizing the dangers of the Ouka and wanting to keep it from being misused, Hibiki blinds herself by slicing her own eyes...just as Joujin reveals he's still alive, secretly hosting Basilisk's Big Bad Tenzen inside his own body as a parasite. He proceeds to try to murder the twins (also, Joujin has Nerves of Steel, meaning he exudes not even the slightest killing intend, making him immune to Hachiro's eyes)...he proceeds to lure Hachiro into taking a fatal hit by targeting Hibiki, but a dying Hachiro uses his eyes on Tenzen, forcing Joujin to destroy the only thing keeping him alive...seemingly.

We see hibiki is later living in peace in the parallel world with her old comrades who now lead happier lives...when Joujin reappears, having been kept alive by the last remnants of Tenzen. Joujin gleefully says he thinks he can create a better technique than the Ouka by mixing his and Hibiki's bloodlines, attempting to rape her, and use those tehcniques to make the world a true hell at last...when the last remnants of Hachiro as a spirit appear, cut Joujin down and then destroys Tenzen's last remains as well, killing Joujin at last.

Heinous standard?

Pretty damn bad. Joujin's responsible for tons of deaths, manipulations, with attempted rape, mass murder, bombing Edo and more under his belt. Comparatively speaking, he has a much higher bodycount than Tenzen himself (who caused a LOT of deaths, and is a rather vicious rapist to boot, and ends up being The Man Behind the Man to Joujin anyways)....now, Ouka's canonicity with the original Basilisk is kind of dubious given it's not done by Futaro Yamada or Masaki Segawa, but I'd be glad to do a full EP on Tenzen as well to settle that issue (he's easily one of the most vile anime villains I've seen)...but any rate, Joujin passes here.

Mitigating Qualities?

joujin is a pretty relaxed big bad, and he is in full control of his emotions, never expressing killing intent or malice. He keeps trying to recruit the twins and as a whole, he does seem a good boss to the Joujinshu...however, when they die, he coldly dismisses them as useless...now, Joujin claims he wishes to save the world and his dragon, Rinne Magoroku, states that Joujin is the 'kindest man alive'....of course, Magoroku is a total fanatic and Joujin is just a demon (maybe literally) with a savior complex who wants to make the world into hell so he can guide it as he thinks it should be with no care whatsoever for those who get caught in the crossfire. The last episodes drive in what an unrelentingly cruel monster he really is, given his master plan is "force siblings to bang each other, murder them if they refuse" with attempting to turn the world into a twisted hellscape to force his own ideas of 'salvation' on it...and he does seem to take a disturbing amount of glee in the suffering of others despite presenting as Affably Evil for a while. When he's pushed to the ropes, he is far less affable and pleasant....and at the end, he decides to try to rape Hibiki as a eugenics experiment.

conclusion?

I'd give Joujin a remarkably easy yes, weird quality of Ouka aside. If anyone has any queries, I'll be glad to EP Tenzen who never got a formal one himself.
