Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Hey everyone so I have a bit of a usual thing to do today. So I finally got around to reading Push after STAR gave up some time ago, I can see why he did. When Carl Jones' film version was proposed the idea of putting up his novel version came up, due to the new rules of offscreen villainy. This was made even stronger when STAR pointed out that Carl does actually show up in flashbacks which show his actions very early on.

Carl Jones was originally cut by the thread but that was for people thinking that he never showed up in the book, I'm not blaming anyone though, since it was the writeup itself that stated that I can see why people thought that was the case. This is as STAR pointed out and I will also after reading the book completely untrue he shows up in flashbacks which show his actions and gives him dialogue. Even if he didn't by the new rules of offscreen villainy Carl would probably still be fine as his actions are extremely important and drive the lives of multiple characters especially Precious and Mary, and we get a lot of info on who exactly the guy is, how he has been raping Precious since she was a kid, how he doesn't care about anyone, and much, much more.

The reason he didn't go up along with the film version when that was proposed was due to uncertainty of if Mary Jones outclassed him. I will say Mary is a lot worse in the novel, in addition to being horribly physically abusive to Precious she was also involved in sexually abusing Previous. However, I will say that I think Carl still stands out as he is established to be the one leading the charge in raping Precious for years and years, he was the one that did it first with Mary doing it later, and he is the reason why her life is so awful during the book due to the children Precious had as a result of the rapes, Mary does get involved in raping Precious but its pretty clear its not nearly as much as Carl does and Mary is primarily supporting him and getting involved with that while Carl is the one leading the charge.

Also since I originally thought about the book to look at the possibility of proposing to Mary since she is much worse in the book I should probably briefly talk about her. Maybe someone will disagree with me but I had to come to the unfortunate conclusion that despite how awful she is she does genuinely love Carl, as twisted and unhealthy as it is. Primarily due to the point in the story late on where the narrative frames it as her genuinely opening up to a counsellor, where she not only has no reason to lie but has a strong incentive not to lie. She talks about how much she cared about Carl, how she loved him since they were kids and how she blamed Precious for taking him away and she had been trying to get his attention the entire time through the abuse she put Precious through. This is also contrasted by Carl seemingly purposefully by the narrative who blatantly doesn't care about Mary at all.

So yeah I am going to advocate that we put the book version of Carl back up. I am not sure exactly how it would be done, I am personally thinking that we should just use his writeup from the film version since his crimes are nearly the same in the book and just list in on both due to Adaptation Displacement as was suggested during the proposal for the film version.

If you wondering why I'm not doing an EP. I honestly don't really see any reason to since most of the stuff was already covered for his film version and I am just giving my points and a few stuff. His crimes are basically the same in the book version as in the film version.

I would appreciate it if you guys gave your thoughts.

[tup] to Christoph Bouchard, Unnamed Commander, Great Tiger, Professor Uwe Fischer, Oliver, Cell.

[tdown] to Septenarius (shame he sounds a good candidate, but not appearing all together is just to big an ambiguity).

Okay great job on Fischer Mir. I'll ty to get my half of the collaboration up soon, but first I have this outstanding write up:

  • Old Gods of Appalachia: Build Mama A Coffin: Granny White, hiding behind the veneer of an old albino woman, is one of the oldest, most powerful and cruellest Deep Things. Running "White Farms", officially presented as a worker's paradise and a refuge for orphans, in reality "a slaughterhouse of souls and minds" to feed her insatiable gluttony Granny White enslaves her workers, bewitching them to worship her whilst their bodies are hollowing out until they work themselves to death. Every soul who is slaughtered, she then binds to cursed earth, leaving them in perpetual agony for her to continue feeding upon, whilst their flesh is twisted into beasts to continue serving her or simply devoured. Purely out of vanity, Granny White likewise holds regular festivals to honour herself, even making children butcher their siblings to present their hearts for her to feast upon. Responsible for the suffering of untold hundreds already, following the death of Glory Anne Boggs, desiring to too devour her power Granny White kidnapped her granddaughter Deeley, to force her mother to bring her Glory's body, all whilst planning to simply eat them both regardless.

Thoughts?

Never got around to finishing it, but having read parts of it, Carl absolutely deserves a dual entry for book and film. Don't particularly care about the specifics - whether that's two entries in one or two separate entries - but he frankly shouldn't have been cut to begin with.

[down] Very fair, obviously no hard feelings... god just even thinking about that book makes me ill and foul-tempered

Yeah, we don't need a big announcement on X-Files. The series was mostly tapped already, now it positively definitely is.

No to the Septenarius, sadly. It's irritating because we do get a personality, but my issue is the original line was terminated before he could so much as make an appearance. And he was definitely going to make an appearance, sooner or later.

So let me go on to the first of my guys...this was the one guy who kept against the flagship "hero" of Arcadia City, X. Arcadia City was a Wretched Hive on par with Gotham and X was basically a 90sAntiHero meld between Batman and the Punisher. Everyone who commits crime in his city is marked with an X. The first is a warning. The second means he's going to hunt you down and kill you.

Appropriately the villains of this setting were generally repulsive, but there's one dude who very blatantly stands about the rest.

What has "the Ziggurat"/"Coffin" done?

Introduced as the Ziggurat and later taking the name Coffin (they're each one of a billion aliases he's gone through in his loooong career as a Psycho for Hire), this dude is a brutal-yet-philosophic mercenary brought in by crime boss Carmine Tango. See, X has been slaughtering his dudes in multitudes and has now proclaimed himself lord of the city. Coffin is the man he brings in to fix the X issue, and he introduces himself springing out of a literal fucking coffin and killing one of Tango's men just because he can.

Killing people "just because he can" is kind of Coffin's thing. The next we see him, he cuts the throat of one of his own men for "patronizing" him and watches with a long smile as the dude drowns in his own blood. Then he bites off a guy's fingers and blows out his brains as a demonstration for Tango. As Tango extends his hold over the city, he starts sending in Coffin for non-X related tasks too...like when Coffin calmly strolls into the house of a man who owes Tango money, informing them that if he performs a certain task, "your family gets to live," as Coffin strokes the infant daughter of the family...

When X finally bumps face-to-face with Coffin, the latter is in the middle of a street packed with dozens of homeless people begging for money. Coffin proceeds to, of course, start gunning them all down for laughs while maniacally quoting Mephistopheles. Just before he can finish off by murdering a woman with two sobbing kids, X finally descends down and beats the dude's ass. Coffin responds by having a helicopter fly in and douse the entire waterfront district with oil, before blowing it all up, incinerating a huge chunk of Arcadia City and killing hundreds and hundreds of homeless vagrants.

X manages to get back at this and almost kill him, landing Coffin prone in a hospital bed, but even this isn't enough to do him in. Coffin is reincarnated by a psychic known as Toby Klein, a fellow Rogue of X's, who shares a hospital ward with him. Together the two try and take down X again, where we finally learn that Coffin and X's history goes way, way back—when Coffin was still the Ziggurat and X was just "Johnny," a mob enforcer for Tango, the Ziggurat carved out Johhny's eye for fun, then tried to drown him with some cement shoes. Johnny survived, but he was mentally transformed by the experience; out of the waves comes X. And karma finally catches up Coffin when X kills Toby, depriving Coffin of his psychic body and killing him for good.

Any mitigating factors?

So Arcadia City had a pretty wicked heinous standard. X fought a corrupt cop who had no issue having a six-year-old shot, fellow Psycho for Hire villains who would happily kill people for no reason whatsoever, and even a goddamned Predator. X himself was no saint, either; he kills even defenseless, pleading criminals and even ones totally incidental to his grudge. When a copycat killer went around marking criminals with the X, the real X killed the copycat and then killed the people the copycat had marked ("I would have dealt with you anyway.")

But X will choose to save the innocent over killing an Asshole Victim, and while this comic is replete with characters who deserve their fate, most cap off at a few bodies at most. Even Wildboy Willie McCone, probably the next most heinous Psycho for Hire (Wildboy killed a man for...giving him a free ride) he doesn't come close to Coffin's body count. Coffin sticks out in this setting and any other in the Dark Horse Heroes universe.

To give you a good idea of who's just under the baseline...Barb Wire had a villain named Mace Blitzkrieg. He bombed police stations, and had dozens of fellow mobsters killed in a manifold of creative superpowered ways—freezing them, electrocuting them, burning them, so on. But his body count's pretty much limited to fellow mobsters, and he lacks any incidental flourishes of brutality that would take him out otherwise. The keepers we got have that depth of cruelty to them and then go the extra mile.

Conclusion?

I'm positive in calling this guy a keeper. And lots, lots more on the way.

Yes to Coffin.

Here's only my third ever contribution to this thread. Fingers crossed it will be my second successful one.

Work

The Kaiju Preservation Society features a world inhabited by Kalju-Like creatures in an alternate universe. They are made of nuclear energy in and can cross over into out world under certain conditions, most of them nuclear related, so a government agency sends people to their dimension to keep them placated and distracted while also working to prevent nuclear events in our world. One Kaiju who wandered through the rift in the 1940s

Who is Rob Sanders and what does he do?

Rob Sanders is a silver spoon executive at his family’s company and the former employer of Jamie, The Hero. The only remotely positive trope I can think of which might apply to him would be Love to Hate. Rob screws Jamie over and leaves him jobless during the COVID pandemic, which causes him to end up working for the Kaiju Preservation Society. However Rob shows up again as a tourist to the other dimension (since his family is a donor to the society) while also having a sinister plan of his own to take kaiju to his dimension to harvest cheap nuclear energy from.

In the first scene Rob listens to a brilliant money making idea Jamie he for the company Robs dad set him up in, kind of like restaurant deliver Uber during the pandemic and tauntingly makes Jamie one of the drivers being paid on commission with no salary or insurance during the pandemic. Jamie ends up working for the KPS and a few months later he meets Rob again when eh visits the other dimension as a tourist admits that he made a $1 bet with his secretary (he calls it a Duke Bet after Trading Places) that twenty people with good high paid jobs in the company were so desperate for job security that if he reassigned them to menial and degrading positions at least half would shut up and bare it. Then he picked the names at random from the company directory and refused to remove Jamie even when she requested, as their friends, and when Jamie proposed his good idea. When he explains his he’s acting civil but is in no way remorseful and is kind of gloating as he reveals he won the bet since eleven people toook the demotion rather than quit.and died in a Japanese fishing lans inspired the original Godzilla movie in this universe. He adds that his father told him about the other dimension and said they'd let him visit once he made his first billion, which he did using the company branch that Jamie worked for. It turns out what Rob did was make the company just enough aof an inconvenience for their competitors to buy them out for their client list and fire all of the employees while only Rob and some other executives made money from their stock. Again, Rob is bragging about this and doesn't give rat's *ss about the employee he ruined.

Rob does seem chagrined when the base head talks about how his grandfather's defective devices at the base caused a rampaging Kaiju to kill fifty people decades ago, but later events indicate that is worry unrelated to anything moral. Rob tries to steal kaiju DNA samples, is foiled by Jamie, and told to never come back.

Some time later hijackers kidnap a pregnant Kaiju and bring her to Canada while also murdering many KPS people in cold blood. Jamie and some friends go to our dimension after them and find Rob leading some mercenaries. When told that one of the people his men killed was a guy he went to college with and who was polite enough to him during his tour, Rob just quips the alumni organization had better not hear about that. He makes it clear that he's going to kill Jamie and the others but says he'll do it quickly if they don't piss him off. He explains his family has been trying to kidnap a kanji for decades and deliberately attracted that rampaging one to the bas decades ago. He defensively says they didn't plan for that monster to go nuclear and kill Leven more people but any Even Evil Has Standards moment goes out the window when he reveals that he's going to snd the kanji mother(since they now have the eggs to harvest nuclear energy from) toward a population center before the stress of everything makes her explode and kill thousands or million. He has people ready to short certain stocks and make money as soon as that happens, plus it will Donald Trump, who his family donates to, declare martial law and avoid being kicked out in the upcoming election. Jamie and his friends trick Rob in to attracting several smaller kanji and he and most of his men are Eaten Alive. A downplayed Treachery Cover Up takes place Rob is posthumously indicated, along with his living and dead relatives, for the lesser crime of defrauding the Department of Energy while the world is told he died testing an experimental energy device when it exploded and that wolves savaged hid body before it got recovered. Jamie goes back to work and recommends Rob's former secretary (who is now stuck on delivery duty) to the KPS as a new grunt employee.

Any Mitigating factors?

He was raised into a family that's been seeking to take the kanji since before he was born but he comes across as a heartless scumbag in unrelated stuff and is pro of his family's crimes. He does argue the world needs more nuclear energy, but Jamie points out this is self-delusion at best and he really cares about getting richer selling it.

Conclusion

A sociopath of the worst kind with lots of ended or ruined lives on his hands. He casually orders murders and has a habit of destroying people's careers and degrading them just for $1 bets so he can emulate the villains of a classic movie, and he only shows any apprehension o concern about this when he realizes Jamie can report his misconduct (during the tour, not the later stuff) to the authorities and has reason to hate him. The only thing that's been holding me back for a few weeks is how spoiler filled his post on the ymmv page will be.
