Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Late [tup] Deikim

What was the original reason he was kept out of this again in the past? Since I remember him being listed as a CM wayyyy back but was cut by the thread when our rules were more stricter and there was a bit of a brief discussion.

Miami Vice is all ready to go, just needs a header and maybe an image. And the remaining entries?

League of Legends still needs the remainders if any plus a new image for image-pickin'.

[tup] Spider and Master

Here's one.

What's the work?

The Final Wish is a 2018 horror mystery film, following a man named Aaron returning home after his father dies and finding a mysterious urn among his belongings that has the power to grant wishes... with dark twists and deadly costs. Tell me if you've heard this one before.

Who is the jinn? What has it done?

The jinn is an ancient demon, existing since before the dawn of even the most ancient civilizations. Bound to a cursed urn, the jinn has been around the world for centuries. The jinn is a shapeshifter and grows more powerful by feeding off of humans' wishes and desires, and, if a person makes a total of seven wishes, the jinn steals away their soul. This leads to a small town where the urn is acquired by an antiquities dealer who learns of its powers and makes wishes with it, only for the jinn to drive him to insanity and trick him into killing his wife. The man cuts out his tongue to prevent himself from ever making another wish, and the urn is sent to local resident Chester Hammond. While the details are kept mysterious, it is implied the jinn has something to do with Chester falling ill and dying, leading to his son Aaron to come home to comfort his grief-stricken mother Kate.

Aaron comes into possession of the urn, and the jinn immediately begins a crusade for his soul. The jinn disguises itself as Aaron's childhood friend Jeremy (who Aaron is unaware died in a car accident) and lures Aaron into a false sense of comfort, even smoking pot with him to make him more susceptible to its suggestions to check out that weird urn he got. Sure enough, Aaron begins to make wishes that miraculously come true. At first he wins $5,000 with a lottery ticket. Later, when he shouts at the neighbor's dog to stop barking (saying he "wishes it would shut up"), the dog is found mutilated the next morning. When he states that he wishes he were more handsome, he is struck by a car and is sent to the hospital, where he undergoes reconstructive surgery that makes his face more handsome.

Later wishing his mother could be happy again, Aaron is horrified to find that his father has returned from the dead as a zombie, with Kate being rendered unhealthily happy and obsessed with his return. Aaron and his love interest Lisa find out about the urn and the jinn's history, and even consult the man who was driven insane, who warns the that the jinn will try to take their souls. Later, when the angry owner of the dead dog comes to confront Aaron, he is mysteriously killed by a sudden rainstorm and some extremely sharp tree branches.

Upon finding out that the jinn has been pretending to be his dead friend the whole time, Aaron accidentally wishes his father dead again. With her husband once again gone, Kate is driven to suicide.

Aaron confronts the jinn, who mocks him by shapeshifting into his dead friends and family and blaming him for their deaths. The jinn then tricks Aaron into making a sixth wish (that Lisa will not be hurt by her abusive boyfriend), and is happy to oblige. The jinn instead tricks another character, Tyrone, into shooting Lisa and her boyfriend to death before shooting himself, all for kicks and to force Aaron into more desperation for a seventh wish. Indeed, Aaron does make a seventh wish: wishing he had died when he was hit by the car so all his loved ones will have never suffered. The jinn is forced to comply, reversing time so that Aaron died that day and all the deaths are reversed...

... until the stinger, which reveals that the jinn still gets Aaron's soul, trapping it in eternal torment within a mirror. The urn is given to Lisa, and the jinn is left to trick and kill another day.

Mitigating factors?

The jinn is referenced to as a demon or unclean spirit, but there is no evidence that it lacks moral agency. It knows how to pretend to be affable and friendly, talks a good deal, and is forced to grant wishes even if they are against its interest.

While the people that were killed because of Aaron's wishes are brought back to life by his final wish, the jinn still caused their deaths in the first place and it doesn't erase all the people the jinn took before Aaron.

Heinous standard?

Sets it. The only other villain is Lisa's abusive boyfriend, but he's just a dick who is implied to maybe hit her. Nowhere near the mass murdering sadism of the jinn.

Verdict?

I'd say [tup]. A manipulative, sadistic jinn who loves to trick people into killing each other or committing suicide all to take the souls of whoever makes wishes with him is a nasty keeper in my book.

[tup] to the Nightmaker quote, Spider Mantee, the Master, and the Jinn.

On Hoopa, the one mitigating factor that I'm most curious about is his potentially close relationship with Aizen. Is there any other insight into their relationship, whether it's friendly or abusive?

[tup] to Spide Mantee, the Master, and the Jinn.

Here's this.

Magic: The Gathering: Leshrac, the Nightwalker, is a cruel and ancient Planeswalker who sought to use his supremacy over black mana to become the mightiest of his kind in the Multiverse. Trapped on Dominaria during the Ice Age, he empowered the necromancer Lim-Dûl to build an undead army by wiping out the plane's remaining nations and turned his pawn into into a sentient ball of flesh when he failed. Returning centuries later during the temporal crisis, he dominated the recently ascended Jeska and forced her to close the rift over the nation of Zhalfir and causing it to be lost to time, relishing the suffering it caused the native Planeswalker Teferi. Ultimately seeking to ambush Nicol Bolas and stop him from closing the last rift, Leshrac would have let the entire Multiverse die to prove he was the mightiest Planewalker in existence.

Now, here is how I figure the ordering should go for right now. It's mostly in order of appearance, but Tezzeret would be good to put just after Bolas as his right hand.

  • Yawgmoth
  • Leshrac
  • Nicol Bolas
  • Tezzeret
  • Ob Nixilis
  • Tibalt

Got some new Complete Monster edits for Sword Art Online (changes are highlighted in bold)

  • Shoichi Shinkawa/Red Eyed XaXa is one of the top members of the Laughing Coffin Guild in SAO, and the Guild's Master Swordsman. During the Murder Investigation Arc in SAO, XaXa, alongside PoH and Johnny Black, ambushed and attempted to murder players Caynz, Yolko, and Schmitt; when Kirito intervened, the trio also tried to kill him. After making his way back to the real world, Shouichi, bored and seeking to kill once again, took advantage of his younger brother Kyoji's fragile mental state, to convince Kyoji to create the online persona of Sterben/Death Gun in Gun Gale Online, ultimately hijacking Kyoji's desire to be "the strongest" for his own ends. Using Kyoji and his old partner Atsushi Kanamoto as aides, Shouichi was able to arrange the murders of players Tamotsu Shigemura/XeXeed, Tarako Usujio, Pale Rider, and Garret, before sending Kyoji to murder his own crush, Shino Asada. A sadist at heart, Shouichi makes a point of crippling his opponents' avatars with a paralyzing toxin before delivering the coup de grace, and during his sword fight with Kirito in GGO does his best to cut him to ribbons, mocking him the entire time.

  • Atsushi Kanamoto/Johnny Black is another bloodthirsty member of the Laughing Coffin guild. As the guild’s Master Poisoner, Johnny came up with a way to paralyze opponents so that they could then be tortured to death. Introduced having captured and incapacitated the Golden Apple guild with XaXa and PoH, as they discuss what they will do with the captured trio, Johnny suggests making them fight each other to the death, promising to release the survivor; when PoH notes that Johnny will just kill the survivor anyway, Johnny complains about how the Guild Leader has ruined the surprise. He subsequently tries to poison Kirito when he comes to the Golden Apple trio's rescue. Returning to the real world, Atsushi was recruited by Shouichi Shinkawa as an accomplice in the Death Gun murders, poisoning Pale Rider and Garret in their homes, before again making a getaway. He was finally arrested when, after having lain in wait for six months, he attacked Kirito and Asuna on the street, intending to inject them with poison from a syringe, and hospitalizing Kirito.
