Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard (MB) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List

Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a MB has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's MBs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any MB link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an MB link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved MBs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their MB equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

How can you tell if a character has been approved or not? I removed an example recently (the owl from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening) because I tried doing a search for the game's wiki word and didn't find an entry for it on the forum, but after looking a little further it seemed like it might have been approved after all, so I put it back. Is there an easier way to find which characters are approved?

Unfortunately, not really, the search function is kind of shit. When i want to find something, I usually just google "tvtropes magnificent proposal [whatever you're looking for]"

You can always check the Magnificent Bastard pages, but in this case it sounds like the Zelda page that would have had that entry just wasn't created yet.

There's one character that I feel just isn't really magnificent- Sillydillo from Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

The thing with trapping Kirby by placing a fake Elfilin is clever, but it doesn't scream "magnificent", especially since Kirby isn't really the brightest person around? Compare this to Magolor, who manages to trick not only Kirby but also the much more dignified and smart Meta Knight. Summoning the trash doll? Also unremarkable to me, standard boss fight stuff. Pyribbit heads into the background during his fight, and it isn't any more magnificent than what Sillydillo does. Turning to the side of good after Leon is brought back to normal? Gorimondo and Carol do that as well. Plus, I feel like Sillydillo is just...too comedic for the trope, especially compared to someone like Magolor who's also humorous but also much less...air-headed.

Since Ghostrunner 2 was released and nobody discussed it, i want to bring up some stuff, that i fear may cause Connor to be cut.

All cutscene from the game for anyone to check out:

Connor is still active at the start of the game and acts as a leader of the Climbers, organizing operations, sending Ghostrunner aka Jack to deal with his enemies and trying to form a new government in the city. Mostly he's doing okay, correctly sends Jack to where he needs to be, claims to try "diplomatic options" before marking the gangs to be "wiped out" and being the first that notices that "The Church of the Architect" is growing more powerful and dangerous and deciding to deal with them.

The problem comes from little things. His efforts to create a government with himself as a leader is told by characters to be doomed to fail and fellow Climbers secretly mock his attempt to create a new currency (which never comes to pass), he pretty much petty bully toward Bakunin and goes out of his way to treat him like shit and his death doesn't show him to be as dignifying as MB's usually get.

34:56, 53:10, 58:35 for the moments that i'm describing.

Also Bakunin claims at 2:05:21 time mark that Connor would have runned away or joined the enemy, when Asura ttacked and started to overwhelm their base (which is used to portray Zoe as a better leader), but Connor was long dead by this point and i don't know how correct he would have been.

Overall i present these point to judge if Connor should be cut or if he is still good to stay, just with a rewrite?

Sad cut to Connor there and can we discuss the Zelda image on one of the devoted threads if we'd like to consider it? I think without knowing the game it's hard to get "MB" from that Ganandorf one.

Cut Connor.

Since it hasn't been updated yet, I tried my hand at adding on to Talos. Full disclosure, I haven't watched Secret Invasion yet, nor do I have any intention of watching it.

    Talos
Original:

  • Captain Marvel (2019) & Spider-Man: Far From Home: Talos is a ruthless, brilliant Skrull war general out to bring his people prosperity. Responding to the aggressive Kree's conquest of their world, Talos becomes a successful tactician as he strikes major blows against the Kree, culminating in ambushing their best squad to kidnap "Vers", aka Carol Danvers, and read her memories. Tracking Danvers to Earth, Talos skillfully infiltrates S.H.I.E.L.D. before ultimately convincing Danvers of the Kree's corruption and becoming her ally. After using his strategic disguise abilities to help Danvers take down the area's Kree cell and rescue Talos's people from extermination, Talos goes on to disguise himself as Nick Fury, fool many people as he leads S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Director's absence, and singlehandedly deduces Mysterio's treacherous ways, avoiding an assassination attempt without breaking a sweat.

New: Added Secret Invasion stuff (got it from Wikipedia, so pls correct if wrong), and reworded the Far From Home stuff since it's a little inaccurate—Talos only realizes Mysterio's a fake when Peter and Happy send him a coded message.

  • Talos is a ruthless, brilliant Skrull war general out to bring his people prosperity. After using his strategic disguise abilities to help Danvers take down the Kree Starforce and rescue Talos's people from extermination, Talos hides his people on Earth under the nose of Nick Fury himself. Years later, Talos disguises himself as Fury to lead S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Director's absence, uncovering Mysterio's treacherous ways with the help of Spider-Man and avoiding an assassination attempt without breaking a sweat. When the wretched Gravik usurps control of the Skrull council, Talos aids Fury in dismantling his genocidal schemes, doing whatever he can to ensure hope and survival for the Skrulls and humanity alike.

I also wanted to make a few edits to Thanos, since the current entry is a little lacking in detail and has some awkward wording—it's not elaborated on by what he'll "prove right", and I don't quite understand what it means by saying Nebula impersonating her future self is "not repeating any failures."

    Thanos
Original:

  • Thanos the Mad Titan, after the death of his home world, is obsessed with reducing the population of the universe to save it and prove himself right. Forming an army of fanatics, Thanos travels from world to world, killing off half of the population of each, while taking children to raise as new warriors in his army, including his favorite daughter Gamora. Seeking the Infinity Stones to wipe out half the universe in one snap of his fingers, Thanos tricks and traps the heroes, staying one step ahead to reclaim the stones, even sacrificing Gamora to claim the Soul Stone at one point even as it destroys him to do so. Attacking Wakanda and repeatedly showing brilliant and effective use of the Stones, Thanos completes his gauntlet and performs the snap, before then destroying the stones to prevent his work from being undone. When his past self from 2014 arrives, Thanos has his daughter Nebula infiltrate the heroes, posing as her future self to not repeat any failures, and resolves to wipe out the universe and make a new, grateful one himself before engaging in the ultimate battle for the fate of all existence.

New: Clarified what he wants, reworded the Infinity War stuff since the original is a little awkward (the "at one point" above seems redundant, and tried to make it more grandiose), and rearranged the Endgame part (the original comes off like he remakes the universe first before fighting everyone, and that "posing as her future self to not repeat any failures" still doesn't make sense to me).

  • Thanos the Mad Titan, after the death of his home world, is obsessed with proving his mad hypothesis of saving the universe by cleaving its population in half, ensuring plentiful resources for the prosperity of the survivors. Forming an army of fanatics, Thanos travels from world to world, killing off half the populations of each, while taking children to raise as new warriors in his army, including his favorite daughter Gamora. Seeking the all-powerful Infinity Stones to achieve his mission in one snap of his fingers, Thanos evades and traps the massive gallery of heroes that unite to stop him from claiming the Stones, staying one step ahead at all times and even sacrificing Gamora to claim the Soul Stone despite how it destroys him to do so. Attacking Wakanda and repeatedly showing brilliant and effective use of the Stones, Thanos completes his gauntlet and performs the snap, before then destroying the Stones to prevent his work from being undone. When a past variant of himself from 2014 learns of the Avengers' efforts to reverse his machinations, Thanos has his daughter Nebula infiltrate their ranks by posing as her future self, resolving to claim the Stones from them in the ultimate battle for the fate of all existence so he can wipe out the universe to make a new, grateful one in its place.

Can you add the current entries in to your post Emerald so it's easy to see what specifically is being altered in the actual current text?

[up] Can't comment on Talos but for Thanos I like the first sentence addition (I'd just take out "mad" before "hypothesis"), don't think the second one is necessary, and I'm fine with taking out the repeat mistakes part.

Alright so, I got a writeup that I am looking to remake.

  • Herobrine, returning from his initial defeat now takes on a far different role within the story. Now running the school that is appropriately named "Monster School". Herobrine teaches a variety of mobs how to efficiently kill players within Minecraft by putting them through a series of grueling tests that often prove lethal, forcing his students to try their hardest in order to succeed before ending things off with a race to the finish where the mobs are placed into teams and have to work together and uses their abilities to their advantage. When Red drops into the building unannounced, Herobrine proceeds to force him into his program despite the other's clear objections, forcing him to participate in his many challenges which often result in him being bullied by the other students. When Red along with the team he was assigned consisting of the Spider, Skeleton, and the Enderman flee the scene after they managed to win the race, Herobrine goes after them in order to have them return to his program, however, upon seeing King Orange, and how he was putting the lives of his students at risk, he proceeded to face off against him, engaging in a brutal fight against the former and proving to be one of his toughest obstacles, managing to stay resilient to the end even when King Orange managed to get the leg over him.
So, if I am gonna be honest, despite writing this myself, I was never the most proud of it, and after a friend pointed out how some of the wording could potentially come off as misleading, due to me using terms like "now takes on a far different role in the story" it makes it seem like only the Av M Season 3 version of the character counts. So to rectify this, I have given him the rewrite treatment, here's the result.
  • Herobrine is the mysterious godlike entity hailing from the world of Minecraft. Having first been introduced possessing the Red Stick Figure and using him to steal the Minecraft Game Icon, Herobrine serves as the first real threat that stick figures have to face, forcing them to face legions of mobs and engaging in a brutal beatdown that leaves them on their last legs. Returning years later having come Back from the Dead, Herobrine now runs a Monster School where he teaches various mobs how to effectively kill players, as well as helping them advance in other avenues, with him often submitting them to brutal trials that force them to think outside of the box, before ending things off with a race to the finish. Realizing that four of his students have fled the scene, Herobrine goes after them and winds up at odds with King Orange. Upon seeing that King Orange was putting his students in danger, Herobrine proceeds to engage in a One-on-One brawl with him, stopping at nothing in order to see his adversary's defeat. Proving himself to be one of the most powerful entities you could ever be at odds with, Herobrine is one teacher you don't want to mess with.

I'm fine with that rewrite.

Regarding Yondu's entry, who are the "employers" highlighted below? From what I remember, he was a free agent with no allegiance to any of the other players in the first movie.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Yondu Udonta, a former Kree battle slave and later Ravager, was hired to kidnap the children of Ego to deliver them to him for a fortune. Upon realizing the children were being murdered, Yondu rescued the last of them, Peter Quill, and raised him as a flawed but devoted father. Yondu proceeds to hunt down the Power Stone in Peter's possession, keeping a step ahead of employers and enemies alike before showing little but pride in Peter swapping the Stone out for a troll doll. After a mutiny in the second film, Yondu is able to almost singlehandedly avenge his loyalists and wipe out his enemies before heading to save Peter from Ego and ultimately proves instrumental in stopping the mad Celestial. Acknowledging Peter as his true son, Yondu chooses to give his life for Peter, honored at the end with a funeral as a true Ravager.

Loki discussion time: He Who Remains...remains, Miss Minutes gets cut.

He Who Remains gets new, terrible actions in the new season. He is revealed to have erased the memories of the TVA employees despite their loyalty towards him, and it's revealed that he rigged the Temporal Loom to explode, destroying both the TVA and all branching timelines, leaving only the Sacred Timeline. All for the purpose of allowing Loki to nullify his death with time-slipping powers that he gave him.

And yet, he will stay. Because as awful as his plan is, it's still quite impressively manipulative, and when found out by Loki, has a calm chat with him about his potential choices. It's clear that he's thought of almost everything, and Loki is forced to sacrifice his own happiness and replace the Temporal Loom and He Who Remains with himself. He Who Remains may be a selfish bastard who erases alternate timelines, but he still keeps that magnificence in doing so.

Miss Minutes on the other hand is batshit crazy. She has an obsessive love towards He Who Remains that she eventually betrays for her own power hungry plan, and along the way demonstrates sadistic tendencies.

I'll rewrite the entry when I wake up.
