New Work Page Workshop Thread

Go To

Please go through these pages first before posting here:

Now that you've read all that, welcome! Making pages for your favorite works and creators is fun, but we get that there's a learning curve, especially for new tropers. This thread is intended to help people new to work-page making, and can cover anything and everything you aren't sure about after reading the relevant Administrivias: whether or not an example passes wiki standards, if the formatting and layout of your page is all right, if the summary is comprehensible, or if the page has enough meat to stand by itself. Or simply if you need a second pair of eyes to take a look at your work.

Things that this thread is not:

  • A place to request work pages to be made - This Is a Wiki; if you are familiar with the work, then you are the best person to make the page. This thread is intended to be a peer review of work pages that are in progress or newly finished. If you feel like a work deserves a page but can't go about making it yourself for whatever reason, please list it in List of Shows That Need Summary.
  • For help with trope-making: see the Trope Idea Sounding Board (for incipient ideas) and the TLP workstation thread (for existing drafts) for help on that.
  • For image selection: you can generally go and put up an image of the work by yourself (go through How to Pick a Good Image first, though), but if you have two or more suggestions, pop by Image Pickin instead.

Now - post your babies (sandboxes, new pages, TLP drafts, etc).! We are here to help. :-)

You would just have to find ways to mention the demo, so I try to switch up the phrasing (“This is shown in the demo when…”, “…as seen in the demo”). Posters and cover arts can also be cited for design tropes.

So, Mechamato is up and launched now, and the sandbox cut. Just two more questions:

1) Should it still be on Future Works? The film is pending release and it was supposed to before the series before the pandemic problems kicked in. Then again, info on the movie could be lumped with the main page and since the series is out, it no longer has to be on that sandbox.

2) Under what folder should the show go on in Cartoon Network? At first I assumed it'd be Others under Acquired Programming but now I just notice the "Foreign-affiliate produced series/films and co-productions" folder. Should it go under there with the sub-bullet like this?:

  • Mechamato (CN Asia, 2021-present)note

Thanks in advance.

[down] If I've the energy and time to then maybe. No such disambiguation has been made for BoBoiBoy, and that has two series and two movies lmao. I've been considering at least soft-splitting the examples for BBB by where they apply (be it in either series or movie) but I've also other projects in mind to do here.

Wouldn't the film get its own separate page from the series?

Wasn't sure where to ask this question, but I'm planning to make a work page for Usotsuki Satsuki Shi ga Mieru (it's sitting over on my sandbox page under Liar Satsuki Sees Death, for the sake of peer review). I'd go ahead and do it, but in the off-chance this ever gets an official English release or anime adaptation or whatever, how would I handle redirects? Would I copy everything to a page with the new English title and make the Japanese title the redirect, or would the English title be the redirect?

Yes, if it ever gets an official English release, the page would be moved to the English title and the Japanese title would become a redirect.

I'm trying to finish writing a page on Beepa The Owl. I've been trying to find five tropes in this commercial (I have four, and I know the minimum is three, but I rarely go below five). So far I've found Cute Owl, Large Ham, Non-Mammal Mammaries, and Unraveled Entanglement, but if someone can see anything else, I'd be grateful.

Alternatively, I'd appreciate some tropes from this or this, which comes from a promotional single with the character and I couldn't find anything.

So, I was wanting to start a work page, and was unsure as to whether or not it would be allowed here.

Specifically, the work in question is Degrees of Lewdity, an HTML game by a Blogspot user by the name of Vrelnir in active development. The game is best summarized as, "Making ends meet in a Crapsack World where everything wants to rape you". While the game is sexual, and graphic at that, it would be a stretch to call it porn, especially since it isn't really treated as gratuitous. In addition, there's a plot. Not just a flimsy reason for the main character to have sex, but an actual plot: You need to meet the ever-increasing demands of your landlord, and how are you going to accomplish that without ending up on the wrong side of the law or your mind? There's also nothing that could be considered pedophilic; all characters are both explicitly and implicitly stated to be of age.

I'm not linking the site here for obvious reasons, but I would appreciate feedback as to whether or not a work page would be allowed.

Hello everyone, first time in this thread.

I recently made a page for the fanfic I'm Nobody and I would like some help with proofreading it. I usually ask on ATT with help for that sort of thing (I know I always miss stuff) but last time I asked someone suggested I try out this thread instead so here I am. I'm looking for spelling, grammar and phrasing errors, as well as example misuses. If anyone feels like adding examples, you are obviously more than welcome.

From a skim I see some zero/partial context examples. A few examples from the first part:

  • Big Bad Duumvirate: After the battle of the Citadel, the Organization teams up with Cerberus. Are both of these Big Bad?
  • Big Brother Instinct: Shepard, Ashley and Axel take this role towards Roxas and Xion, though Axel is more of an enabler than a protector. Take *what* role?
  • Crossover Ship: Roxas ends up with Tali. Shepard and Axel are heading that way. How is this a crossover? Heading *what* way? also this is YMMV
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Saren is convinced that he can make a deal with Sovereign AND control the Heartless. BIG mistake. Are Sovereign/the Heartless evil? How was it a mistake?

Basically you can't use "is this" for context, you can't point to the title for context, and (as this is a fanfic) you can't assume familiarity with the source material will be enough for context (eg. from Pop-Cultural Osmosis I know the Organization are the villains of Kingdom Hearts, but that's not enough).

[up][up]But... this is a fanfic. Shouldn't it be reasonable to assume that people who check out this fanfic page are familiar with at least one of the works involved? After all, Most Fanfic Writers Are Fans.

[up][up]Nope (and this applies to all work pages; fanfic especially is not special). You are not writing for the subset of readers who read Kingdom Hearts fanfic, nor are you writing for Kingdom Hearts fans. You're writing for everyone who reads TV Tropes.

I personally like to think about it as "writing for the TRS cleanup editor". If someone who just wants to dewick a trope without caring where it's from reads your examples, is there enough for them to keep or axe?

My own rule of thumb is "too much is better than too little". This occasionally makes my entries long, but makes sure lack of context shouldn't be an issue.

Not that this is a guarantee, mind you. I've seen entries that say a lot without providing context of the trope.

[down] If it helps, my other rule of thumb is "write as if any potential reader will have no idea what you're talking about"

Crossover Ship can have context by simply adding which different works the characters are from. I think despite being YMMV, it can be added to a fanfic page as an example of the YMMV item in one specific fanwork.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Hey guys,

I'm doing a Literature page for Jeremy Robinson's Space Force but there's already a Space Force page.

What's the protocol for that? List the author first?

Definitely not, that'd mess with alphabetization. You'd put this one at Literature.Space Force 2018, most likely.

The website is def dead, the twitter is basically dead, and the only thing from a google is the goodreads profile, but I think these are those books on amazon, just under a different author name for whatever reason. So saved from Darthification for now and Space Force gets to be a disambig once (2018) is up.

They are apparently now renamed STAR CRIME.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I'll post a link for review after I do the page and hopefully folks can give it a once over before I start indexing.
