Have an idea for a new trope, but don't know for sure if it's a good idea? Did Trope Finder give you similar concepts, but not exactly what you wanted? Are you just looking for a focus to a broader idea?

You've come to the right place!

On this thread, you can share your ideas with the masses before making that TLP draft, so if there's any lingering uncertainty about the validity of your idea or you just want some help pinning down a good idea, ask away and help others out, too!

A related sandbox I need to pitch is the Trope Idea Salvage Yard. If you've an idea but can't personally work on it, you can add it to the yard and let someone else create the draft. Or you can browse it yourself if you need more draft ideas, whether or not you feel they should be mentioned here first.

Got ideas for non-trope pages you need help with? Never fear, the New Page Workshop Thread is here!

With that out of the way: Let's discuss some ideas.

Monsters Are Monocular:

Because there seems to be a trend with monsters only having one, instead of two, eyes:

Oculothorax... And would be a subtrope of Cyclops for when it's monsterous:

I remember thinking Cyclops had villainy as part of the criteria, probably because I saw Cyber Cyclops first and the description for that plays much more into the robot being sinister.

The beings classified as monsters in The Pink Corruption all appear to have only one eye, regardless of if they're corrupt or not. (It's a sandbox work page at the moment though)

Thanks! Probably will make this my next draft, with heavy Cyber Cyclops overlap, since I'm on a Shantae troping kick.

[up] Here's my example if you'd like.

  • The Pink Corruption: A common physical feature among monsters is having only one eye while normal shapes have two. Most of the monsters (Dub, Barracuda, Ajaceare) tend to be corrupted, but not always, as even Dub was good before Barracuda's influence. Pyrare is a heroic caretaker who also happens to be a one-eyed monster (and Barracuda's father), but he still spooks others with his appearance.

I don't see a point in splitting this from Oculothorax. Most of those characters are monsters by design and the description already notes that the design denotes creepiness or evil in a lot of cases because it's a good way to make a design look "alien". Its the same concept.

Shantae Spiders are Oculothorax-y now that I look closely. Basically almost an eyeball and legs.

Thinking of a "Mail-Order Tchotchke" trope, about things advertised in the backs of magazines and comic books, often with very over-the-top and misleading claims for what ultimately ends up being a useless 10-cent hunk of plastic. I'm struggling to think of any examples other than the hypno-ring from Captain Underpants and the stopwatch from Simpsons Treehouse of Horror, though.

We have Aesop Enforcer, I think that's what you are talking about.

[up][up]No? The reason it was bombed because the wiki voted to ban Works by Subject since 2022 because it's a magnet to superfluous usage. Nothing has changed on the matter — it wasn't accepted then, it won't be accepted now.

Can extraterrestrials be added under Monsters Are Monocular? Many sci-fi authors like to have one-eyed extraterrestrials. After all, extraterrestrials can be seen as monsters not native to Earth according to some interpretations.

A notable example of such include the Rigellians from The Simpsons. Kang and Kodos are the two best-known Rigellians.

I guess no trope currently fits how the book with a central eye is a monster.

So someone can grab my idea since I've lost a bit of steam, or I'll do it tomorrow if no one else does.

There could be "banner language" because zeb banner who spoke italian and "politicly incoherent" because zeb was politiche incoherent. If you dont know who zeb is hes a youtuber/streamer

[up]This thread is for ideas for tropes, not creator pages. If you want to make a page about Zeb, you don't need to ask anyone else before you make it (though you should try and find more examples of tropes in his work first).

If you're suggesting a trope where one of Zeb's videos is an example, you'll need at least two other examples from other pieces of media before you can make a post in the Trope Launch Pad.

True Art Is Angsty is not an YMMV anymore, and it was not executed that well, but do you think that an YMMV item like Angsty Appeal or Seriousness Appeal might work?

As in: A work is received well due to being more serious or darker than what's usually expected from the creator, genre or series.

I've been wondering: how come we don't yet have a page for Bizarro Speak yet? That is, the speech pattern where nouns and adjectives are replaced with their antonyms, leading to some rather bizarre (heh) sentences. A regular person might say, "Goodbye, and come back tomorrow!" A weirdo who talks in Bizarro Speak will instead say, "Badbye, and come back yesterday!"

Would Black Clothes Are Cool be a trope? I'm not sure how to describe this clear implication of Cool People Rebel Against Authority with more tropes than Cool Shades.

Gonna try again in reviving my trope idea of Terrible Artists passing off a blank white canvas as actual art, like a polar bear in the Arctic or a snowstorm.

Need two more examples for a TLP draft.

Hi all, I have a suggestion to sound here: the trope of Tertiary Sexual Characteristics is for cases where the Creator gives these features to their characters so as not to misgender them. So, how about the case of the character themselves (thus, kind-of in-universe) put on the same types of features to clarify their gender identities?

Want to see if this is a sound trope idea: basically a combination of Life-or-Death Question and Heads or Tails?, which decides whether a character will kill someone. Completely based on chance, and shows the character to be a remorseless psychopath who treats murder like a game, literally. The odds are usually also stacked high against a character (They'll probably get out fine though because Plot Armor). Examples can include a heads or tails decision in murdering someone, or a more unfair drawing an ace out of a pack of cards.

Thoughts?

Where have I been? Honestly, nowhere much.
