~nombretomado, can you hold off on those cuts? I’ve contested the decision to merge (see my posts on the previous page, but tl;dr, to quote myself, “the entire discussion leading up to the vote to merge Crazy Awesome with Essential Madness was erroneously based on the assumption that the "Crazy" in Crazy Awesome was meant in the literal, mental health sense.”) though the discussion has since stalled out.

In any case, I'll try removing the examples that don't fit.

[up][up] I agree, let's hold off on the cuts.

What should be done, since the crowner was already called?

Yeah, merge the wicks. However, it looks like that it's going to take a while.

[up]So do we want to redirect the Crazy Awesome subpages to Success Through Insanity? Or are we saving them for potential examples to move? What about Laconic.Crazy Awesome and Quotes.Crazy Awesome?

ImperialMajestyXO Since: Nov, 2015
#132: Jun 29th 2020 at 7:39:01 PM

[up] Well, some of us are inclined towards keeping Crazy Awesome around, just as a different concept than Success Through Insanity.

[up]OK, thanks. Is it worth adding back the Crazy Awesome examples I cleaned up? Or should that, and/or continued cleanup, wait until we decide what to do with Crazy Awesome?

Well, how much cleanup did you do? If you nuked like ten examples, it wouldn't be bad to add them back (or at least put them on a sandbox somewhere). If you nuked a thousand, then that's probably too much effort.

[up]The biggest non-ZCE examples I cut. (Others were so small I can't recall them).

Pony POV Series

  • Crazy Awesome:
    • Screwball/Golden Tiara, who breaks out from the asylum by being too crazy and badass to be stopped by obstacles like hoof-cuffs, numerous security staff, reinforced doors, electric fences, or a cockatrice attack. The next we see of her, she's stealthed her way to Canterlot, at least partially by relying on a drainage system, which she fit through by dislocating her own bones, which is also how she managed to escape the asylum. Did we mention she can dislocate and re-set her bones? Because she can, and she refuses to let a little thing like pain that would knock a normal/sane pony unconscious stop her from saving her daughter.
    • Apple Pie. What else describes somepony who manages to Logic Bomb an army of zombies with what she thought was just an amusing observation? She is related to Pinkie Pie after all. Her power as the Element of Laughter? Weaponized Logic Bombs!
    • The CMC! A fact that is firmly acknowledged In-Universe. List of achievements include: Travelling into another dimension (that technically DOESN'T EXIST), fighting in the Changeling War and being a genuine threat to trained Changeling Soldiers AND SUMMONING A WATER ELEMENTAL WITH A BOX OF MATCHES

YMMV.Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans

YMMV.Pokemon Anime

  • Crazy Awesome:
    • Harley is considered a walking Law of Disproportionate Response to everything (becoming May's rival because she didn't think his cookies tasted good enough, for starters), and he only gets crazier and more awesome after his repeated failures against May.
    • Some of Gible's funny moments slide it into this at times such as eating away at giant mechanical robots, or even one particular moment where he located a certain lost Piplup on purpose with its Draco Meteor.
    • Anytime Team Rocket get to be competent, expect them to also be this. "Dressed For Jess Success" takes the cake. It wasn't enough to have James pull their first Team Rocket Wins episode. He had to do it cross dressing as Jessilina the entire time.
    • Ash can be this when he pulls off any number of unconventional moves in battle to pull out a victory.

These worth adding back? Too misused? And/Or should they be moved to other trope if applicable.

Not familiar with any of these works, so I am judging by their writeups, although I am sure that Ash from the Pokemon anime is not crazy or insane. Of these, only Apple Pie and Gible could count; the other examples don't meet the "insanity"/"crazy" aspect of the trope.

[up][up]

  • Screwball: sounds like she goes above and beyond enough. based on this, I'd count her.
  • Apple Pie: not enough context to tell. you don't need to be wild, wacky, over-the-top, or frighteningly lacking in common sense to use Logic Bombs.
  • CMC: Beyond the Impossible makes them strong contenders. the "genuine threat to soldiers" part isn't necessarily Crazy Awesome, it depends how they're a threat.
  • Tekkadan: the asteroid towline thing sounds like it could fit, if it's something no reasonable person would consider. the bait thing doesn't sound like an example. Indy Ploys can be the mark of a Crazy Awesome character, but not every Indy Ploy is Crazy Awesome. I'd say a weak keep based on the towline thing, but desperately needing more context.
  • The two mech examples: assuming they are very over-the-top for the setting, they'd probably fit.
  • Harley: not enough context. possibly not an example.
  • Gible: the "eating giant robots" thing makes it sound like an example. I'd keep this one.
  • Team Rocket: ZCE. I'd leave it cut.
  • Ash: "unconventional" isn't enough. I'd leave it cut based on lacking context.

IIRC, Gible doesn't fulfill the "crazy" part.

Just looked up Gible, it's some kinda shark-looking Pokemon? In which case, chewing through giant robots is a lot less noteworthy. Probably not an example, then.

Yeah, you'd expect a super-powered shark-based creature to have super-bitey powers.

Doing things that defy reason make one a contender for Crazy Awesome. Things that would make more sensible characters look at them as if they were crazy.

My thoughts on the examples:

Worth adding back if the entries can be moved to other objective tropes?

The Pokémon one's I'm fine with adding back for fitting the soft definition (save Ash as ZCE and only occasionally pulling off such that audacity is not a prominent character trait). Should I for now?

I also found another removal under Transformers: The Last Knight.

  • Crazy Awesome: People have liked Cogman for how manic and impulsive he can be. For example, his reaction to Cade and Viviane being flirtatious is to set up a dinner date. But since there's no supplies on-hand for food or to cook it, his reaction is to fire himself out of the torpedo chamber, catch two tuna by the tails and drag them flopping and thrashing back to make sushi.

Thoughts on it?

Apple Pie: Logic Bomb suffices as it doesn't stem from their insanity or impossibility (as written a least).

I'm not following, are you saying she is or she isn't an example?

his reaction is to fire himself out of the torpedo chamber, catch two tuna by the tails and drag them flopping and thrashing back to make sushi.

That certainly sounds wacky and over-the-top enough to qualify.

We have 4482 left. Do we have any takers or are we going to add it to the list of stalled cleanups?

I'll clock this.

[up] Explain? Do you mean the definition, or why it isn't chairs? The page claims that the new trope, Success Through Insanity, involves a character's insanity being used to solve a problem.

Read back. Someone came after the crowner to argue that "Crazy" might not mean what we all assumed.

[up] Okay. They can't agree if Crazy Awesome originally referred to Bunny-Ears Lawyer, Cloudcuckoolander, or insanity, but it's believed that the new trope is too narrowly defined, and that the merger with Essential Madness was incorrect. We may need to undo the merger and/or rename the new trope to Success Through Quirkiness.

Not to mention that some of us, myself included, believe the misuse could make for a valid trope in its own right.
