Outdated Administrivia Pages

Go To

This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Administrivia Pages.

Note: This thread is not for asking mods to make one-off edits to Locked Pages, Administrivia-related or otherwise, such as requesting additions to an Example Sectionectomy index. Please use this thread for that.

Anyway, I thought it was How To Create A Works Page since that one doesn't really seem to mention that these pages can go to TLP; and Free Launch doesn't really come off as anti-TLP to me; can you point out where you think we should tweak stuff?

I wrote that while sleep deprived so now I realize I misread some as anti-Tlp. The only thing that might need tweaking is being suspended for posting Work Pages Are A Free Launch. But we probably need mod opinion for that

Fair enough~

While we wait for a mod to pop in, we might need to update People Sit On Chairs to explain that Truth in Television =/= chairs, as it's a very common misconception.

[up]I agree with adding that being Truth in Television isn't synonymous with Chairs. If tropes had to be 100% fictional, the NRLEP designation wouldn't exist, because then there wouldn't be any real life examples to write about.

Actually, maybe we could add a bit about how being Truth in Television doesn't always mean that listing real life examples is acceptable, per NRLEP.

Edit: Maybe we could add something like the following:

Being Truth in Television does not keep something from being a trope, even if some tropes are only possible in fiction. However, being possible in real life does not always mean that it's acceptable to list real life examples. Tropes that only allow fictional examples are listed under No Real Life Examples, Please!.

Update: I added Main. This Troper to Wick Namespace Migration, with a note saying that Administrivia.First Person Writing is the primary name.

[up] That's pretty good, though we might want to expand the first sentence a little, maybe to point out that a lot of tropes are given meaning beyond the fact that they occur in real-life, which is why they're still tropes and not just reality.

Should Administrivia.Know The Staff be updated to only show active mods? I remember we used to comment out some of the inactive ones a couple of years back. Quite a few of the mods have been absent for a few years now.

I think I've suggested updating the Administrivia.Know The Staff page in a Wiki Talk thread once, though it was more about making a list for Inactive Staff and just putting them there. I think it would be more honoring, as they have done some work before yet people would still know they're not exactly who they should look for if they need help.

I'm gonna be honest - the only mods that are truly active, in the sense that I know for a fact they're working on the wiki in some capacity, are myself, Fighteer, DBL, nombre, and Berrenta. Everyone else is either MIA (in that I haven't interacted with them in a mod capacity in a looooong time, if ever) or are not modding in any capacity anymore but still have the title.

He is. In fact, he is probably more active than DBL, who seems to be more of a "come mod occasionally" moderator. Of course, everyone troper has a life and TV Tropes ultimately doesn't pay for work being done, so it's kinda understandable.

Anyway, I'll probably get working on Sandbox.Know The Staff, with a Retired Staff section on the bottom.

I hardly see Deadbeatloser 22 anywhere except the General U.S. Politics thread in a non-mod capacity and sometimes the suspension appeals thread. I also have seen eyebones in the wild, who is listed as a moderator, but never as a mod (not counting his work as Fast Eddie). Truthfully though, besides Deadbeatloser22, I only see Septimus Heap, Willbyr, Berrenta, Fighteer, and nombretomado.

Is there any interest in adding to the list of moderators?

[down] If that's the case, then my problem is that I seldom look at the TLP.

Well, when I was making Sandbox.Know The Staff I added pretty much all mods who have shown activity within the year of 2020. Admittedly, a few of them (Eyebones, Madrugada, Lu 127) have shown a miniscule amount of activity this year, yet I still kept them. Maybe I was too generous, or maybe there could be better criteria.

Anyway, thoughts on Sandbox.Know The Staff? Please? Maybe set a different activity threshold for the mods who have done something this year but not that much?

Maybe split forum and wiki activity?

And Active to me is present in a consistent manner. Maybe have a 3-6 month bar?

I've updated that page slightly based on feedback. Not sure if splitting by wiki and forum activity is really needed, some admins seem to be forum-oriented (or even TLP-oriented and there's no tracker for that) and still do their job in some way.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call BlueNinja0 retired since they're so new as a mod to begin with; and 2019 wasn't that long ago.

So going back to TLP for a second, should we update it again to point out that rogue/stealth discards are also frowned-upon and potentially ban-worthy? There are tons of people who never rogue-launch but think it's just fine to go rogue-discard anything they dislike, and that's a problem that should be addressed, which it currently isn't AFAIK.

The problem of rogue-discarding is why I reminded the Trope Launch Pad Discard Project to record their reasons for accountability.

Should we discuss explanations for Permanent Red Link Club listings here? There are a few that look a little outdated.

^ In particular, there's no reason to keep the DoNotDoTheResearch/ namespace pages there, because DNDTR itself is listed separately.

It might just be me, but the way example tropes are listed in Example Indentation in Trope Lists looks like it's encouraging zero context examples and usage of "this" wording.
