Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Yes to Azrael, Djibril and Yuna.

I must ask. Considering Patrick Zala is too far gone by the start of the events and has long since strayed from his goal of peace for Coordinators, would he ne an example? His wife died yes but to me he's more like Light from Death Note with none of his "coolness".

I think Light or Beyond is worth an EP because the cool factor of Light is very YMMV and to me he's literally just a spoiled, self centered raving lunatic. Might propose Izuka provided he hasn't been brought up. Or Lekain as he is equally as hateable.

So here is a video game example from the Sly Cooper series, set in a world anthropomorphic animals. The series focuses on Sly Cooper, a leader of a gang of thieves with a sense of honour; Sly is the latest in a long family line of theives. Throughout the games, they pull of heists, fight worse criminals, and constantly run into Sly's love interest/rival Inspector Carmelita Fox.

The third game Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, synopsis reads as such "Set shortly after the events of Band of Thieves, Sly has learned of the Cooper Vault, a gigantic store of the wealth that his family has accumulated over the years. He must find a way, however, to defeat Doctor M, who has taken over the island where it is located to try to break into it, with many failed attempts. Sly must regroup his old gang and recruit new members in order to succeed at reclaiming his family's history, all while still on the run from Carmelita."

I bring this up here because it's main villain, as well as a secondary antagonist, are both pieces of work. I'll get the main bad guy out of the way.

Who is Dr. M ? What does he do ?

An anthropomorphic mandrill, Dr. M was once a member of Connor Cooper's, Sly's fathers, gang, serving as the brains of their operation. After Connor's death, you think he'd be respectful and honouring of his long time friend and leader's memory and legacy. Nope! He thinks he's entitled to take the Cooper Vault, all the Cooper's riches and Sly's rightful inheritance for himself. Setting up shop on and island the vault is located, setting up extreme security and creates mutated monstrosities under his control fight off anyone and everyone trying to steal what's "rightfully" his. For all his work, he's not very successful. The game focuses on Sly rebuilding his gang, and gaining new members throughout in order to take back the island and claim his inheritance.

When we first see Dr. M, he is talking to a henchmen about how his family is doing...only to tell said henchmen that he will never see his family again, as he slowly poisons said henchmen to death for a petty failure. When Sly and his friends, as well as Carmelita and her small army of cops, reach the island, we are treated to not one, not two, but seven boss fights with Dr. M and the monsters in his control. In one fight giant monster nearly slowly crushes Sly to death in one fight, and kills Carmelita's squad when she arrives to save him. All the while Dr. M gets annoyed with the cops for interfering with him, and audaciously calls Sly "selfish and egotistical" for trying to take the Cooper Vault, justifying what he's doing as "self defense" to Carmelita's face.

The fighting continues in several stages while Sly recovers from his injuries. Eventually, Dr. M tries to convince Sly's best friends and surrogate brothers Bentley and Murray to turn against Sly, not comprehending their genuine friendship in contrast to his relationship with Connor. After getting into a fight with the two, Dr. M chases down Sly into the Cooper Vault as the cavern they are in begins to collapse. Dr. M engages Sly in a final and personal fight. Carmelita arrives and when Dr. M see's that the two care for eachother, he tries to shoot her only for Sly to take the hit, and Carmelita incapacitates Dr. M in turn. While everyone flees the collapsing cavern, the greedy Dr. M refuses to leave the treasure he spent years chasing and angrily screams like the ape he is as he's crushed to death.

Complexity or Evil Is Cool ?

He's made numerous epic monsters to show of his mad scientist credentials. But as a character he's not exactly a charismatic or entertaining as a villain, in fact his characterization is that of an Entitled Bastard selfishly trying to steal someone's inheritance because he thinks it's owed to him. The game makes no attempt to make us appeal to him, and he makes the claim that it's because he was "underappreciated" as a member of Sly's fathers gang, but not only do we not see any proof or indication of this, it doesn't really justify his entitled attitude. Not helping his likability status is him poisoning a lackey for a minor failure, mockingly bringing up the guys family.

Alright, round two for Kingsman. From Kingsman: The Golden Circle this time, we have The unnamed President of the United States.

Who is he? What has he done?

The President was in office when Poppy Adams enacted her plan to make all drugs in the world legal by poisoning all drug users and holding the cure to ransom. Despite the several millions people who will die, The President plans to let them all died to rid the world of "junkie scum".

Evil Is Cool? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

Unlike Poppy, The President has nothing going for him in these departments.

What makes him personally despicable?

Even as his over worked adviser begs him to save the innocent people (some of which have to be minors), his only concern is "Winning the war on drugs". Even after his adviser gets poisoned to, he still refuses to help. He is also a hypocrite as he has no problems with drinking alcohol while cackling about defeating drugs.

Verdict:

I wish I could make a bigger effort-post, but when it comes to The President, everything pretty straightforward. [tup]

[tup] to the President.

What's the work?

Megamind is a 2010 animated comedy that follows the titular character, after years of endless defeats, finally besting his Arch-Enemy, Metro Man. However, Megamind eventually grows bored without a nemesis and decides to create a new hero. Enter our candidate.

Who is Hal Stewart? What does he do?

Hal starts the movie off as Roxanne Ritchi's cameraman. Hal has a crush on Roxanne, and seeks to win her heart. Roxanne, however, does not reciprocate Hal's feelings, and politely turns him down. Later on in the movie, Hal is accidentally hit by a serum created by Megamind, giving him powers similar to those of the MIA Metro Man. Megamind, disguised as "Ghost Dad", tracks Hal down and trains him as a hero. When Megamind decides Hal is ready, he gives him his superhero costume and dubs him Titan (though Hal spells it as Tighten). Tighten then kidnaps and "saves" Roxanne, and reveals his identity to her. Despite the fact that he now has powers, Roxanne once again expresses her disinterest in Hal, causing him to angrily storm off. Hal is next seen spying on Roxanne during her date with a man named Bernard (actually Megamind in disguise). Believing that being a hero is too much work, Hal decides to turn to villainy. When Megamind pays him a visit, Hal he offers that they team up. Megamind rejects Hal's offer, and provokes him into a fight by revealing that he is both "Ghost Dad" and "Bernard" (Or as Hal puts it, "Some intellectual dweeb). Hal wins the fight, but instead of taking him to jail as Megamind expects, Hal expresses his desire to kill him, causing him to flee. The civilians of Metro City then congratulate Hal for defeating Megamind, only for Hal to flick the mayor away and declare that he's taking over the city as the new villain. Roxanne later on in the movie confronts Hal and tries to appeal to his good nature, but is unsuccessful. Hal declares that there is no good in him, and kidnaps and straps Roxanne to the same radio tower where she rejected him, and sends a message to Megamind threatening to kill her if he doesn't come to face him. Megamind answers the call, and he and Hal have their second battle, which ends with Hal seemingly killing Megamind. Hal then attempts to finish Roxanne off, but is stopped by Metro Man. As Hal and Metro Man fly off to fight, Roxanne rushes to Megamind, who is revealed to be Megamind's friend, Minion in disguise. The real Megamind is in fact the Metro Man fighting Hal. After Megamind is victorious, he makes Hal promise to leave Metro City and never return. Unfortunately, Hal returns, since "There's only one person I know who calls this town Motrocity" After one final fight, Hal is defeated and has the serum taken out of him.

What makes Hal personally despicable?

Even before he becomes a supervillain, Hal is shown to be quite the suspicious individual. For example, he tries to ask Roxanne out while she's still grieving over Metro Man, and when Roxanne says that she can't deal with crowds, Hal tries to reassure her that it will be just the two of them. When he does get his powers, we get to see the real Hal; a petty, entitled, cowardly sociopath who only cares about himself, and is willing to kill anyone for even the slightest grievance.

Evil Is Cool traits? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

His reason for turning evil? The girl he liked rejected him. That's literally it. It's not a sympathetic motive and the movie doesn't pretend otherwise. While he does have his fair share of comedic moments - telling Roxanne that there is no Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy or Queen of England - they're mostly at his expense about how unintelligent or how much of a loser he is.

Verdict? [tup]

[up] I think that if someone believes that society, or specific people, owe them romantic relationships, they need to do some serious soul searching; they should take a moment to consider WHY they may not be the recipient of affection, and once they overcome that sense of entitlement, then they may find someone, but there's no guarantee.

On that note, stay tuned this week for a candidate who is even more repulsive than Tighten.

Here's Tighten's write-up. As always, feel free to edit:

Megamind: Hal Stewart starts off as Roxanne Ritchi's creepy and stalkerish cameraman, and only gets worse from there. After being accidentally given powers by Megamind, the latter disguises himself as his "Space Dad" and trains him to become the superhero known as Titan/Tighten. More interested in getting the girl than actually being a hero, Tighten uses his new powers to try to impress Roxanne. She rejects his advances, causing him to storm off and begin a life of crime. When he finds out that Megamind was his "Space Dad" and got Roxanne to go out with him, Tighten attempts to murder him in a fiery rage. Following Megamind's retreat, Tighten subjugates Metro City as his own, and when Roxanne attempts to talk sense into him, Tighten declares that there is no good in him, and kidnaps and tries to kill her for not loving him.

Time to finish what I started. Any fans of Kingsman, you knew this was coming. From both Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle , we have Charlie Hesketh.

Who is he? What has he done?

Charlie was a rich boy chosen by Arthur to be his candidate to replace Lancelot. He is also rude, condescending, and classist. He constantly talked down to Eggsy during training, intentionally getting his name wrong and telling him he looks like a fast food worker not a spy. Charlie shows his true colors when he fail the Secret Test of Character by revealing Kingsmans secrets to save his own life. Charlie then finds away to one up that by blowing Eggsy cover in Valentines base thanks to joining Valentine.

Evil Is Cool? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

This is interesting because in the second movie he loses his Dirty Coward traits and gains a metal arm and the ability to fight Eggsy on equal ground with lead to some spectacular fights. He also did genuinely love his girlfriend and made sure she got the cure promptly. However...

What makes him personally despicable?

While it was Poppy's plan, Charlie is the one most responsible for the deaths of the other Kingsman agents (including Eggsy's best friend Roxy), Brandon (one of Eggsy's other friends) and JB (Eggsy's dog). He also killed his girlfriend when he found out she cheated on him.

Verdict:

Oh boy[tup][tup][tup].

Also [tup] to Dr. M and Tighten.

This is the second candidate of Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves; General Tsao.

Who is Tsao ? What does he do ?

A warlord, anthro chicken and self appointed leader of a village in the Kunlun Mountains in China. He is the Arc Villain of a subplot involving the atonement and redemption of previous Sly villain, the Panda King. After Sly and his gang meet up with the Panda King, they learn the Panda King's daughter and Morality Pet Jing, has been taken hostage by Tsao. Tsao comes from a long line of warlords and takes narcissistic pride in his lineage, and he wants to merge his bloodline with that of the Panda King's to make his family stronger. So of course his plan is to marry Jing against her will. Sly and the gang team up with the Panda King to rescue his daughter as the wedding date nears. The brains of Sly's operations, Bentley comes up with a plan to infiltrate and foil the wedding plans in advanced. Unfortunately Tsao is smarter than he looks and catches onto their plan, and first confronts Sly on an ancient battlefield were the two fight, until Tsao flees when Sly gets the upper hand. Tsao cowardly avoids further confrontation throughout the subplot, but summons dragons and Chinese Vampires onto his village to hinder the Cooper gang, but the Cooper gangs operation successfully sneaks Jing out and reunite her with her father. Tsao remains confident his planned marriage will go unchallenged, but unknown to him, Sly's rival/love interest Carmelita sneaks into the wedding and arrests him on the alter.

Complexity ? Evil Is Cool ? What makes him despicable ?

A lot of Sly villains do have some "cool", zaney, even comedic qualities to make them cool as villains, or even endear them to the audience. Many of them have sad pasts, and some even redeem themselves down the line. Hell, Tsao is the Arc Villain of a subplot revolving around Panda King's redemption. Tsao has none of these however.

Besides his goal being one of a forced marriage to someone who doesn't want him, Tsao is an arrogant misogynistic cock who for all he bravado from being from a great line of warriors, cowardly chickens out when the going gets tuff for him and sets loose dragons and the undead as back up. He displays his sexism by stating that Jing is a woman who doesn't know up from down, and highlights his arrogance with his statement "Why have friends when you can have servants ? Why have affection when you can have obedience ?"

So if the creators in this game wanted to make another villain who exits for the player to enjoy defeating or humiliating, they succeed in flying colours with this one.

Think I'll do an Effortpost on the unnamed Guardia Chancellor from Chrono Trigger in 1000 AD if no one has done him before. (This thread is moving so fast it's hard to keep track) If he has, let me know. If not for the fact the heinous standard in Trigger was so high he might make an easy keep for Complete Monster too given he tries to have Crono executed and then later tries to have Marle's father executed for treason.
