- "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:
- Anything praising the game◊, calling it the next Mega Man◊, and encouraging people to back the Kickstarter when it was first announced◊ suddenly becomes extremely uncomfortable to look at after the backlash surrounding the finished product occurred.
- Likewise, fan art like this◊ (back when the game maintained a friendly relationship with other Kickstarted games) made near the start of the Mighty No. 9 saga, which gave way to art like this◊ as the backlash escalated.
and just because there's no cleanup thread for HIH, I'm bringing it here:
- Harsher in Hindsight:
- Some were dismissive of the game from the very start, and stated their opinions as such. At the time, most had simply dismissed these people as simply jaded. But the same issues mentioned above made more people think they should have listened, thinking they turned out to be right.
- Red Ash, the game which caused so much terrible flak with the fandom? Development Hell, verging on Vaporware. Comcept itself? Bought out by Level-5. The animation? After a long time of near-silence, it finally released to extremely little fanfare. Mighty No. 9 is the first time the franchise encountered a Franchise Killer... before it even became one.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't FAM and HIH have to be something from the work itself that eventually makes people wince, not something from outside the work or during its development?
Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread! In addition to those issues, "remember when people thought this would be good" feels kinda reaching for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment, IMO. Dumb as the 'hey celebrities are mortal' misuse is, at least people dying is actually something that's legitimately sad.
From YMMV.Trading Places
- "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:
- Winthorpe saying "It's kill or be killed" and "Nothing you've seen in your life can prepare you for the unbridled carnage you're about to witness" as he and Billy enter the World Trade Center for the climax.
- Funny at the time, rather disturbing after the 1993 WTC bombing, heartbreaking after 9/11.
- It has another nasty connotation, given the deaths of Vic Morrow and two child actors during filming of John Landis' segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie one year earlier, making it a very clear case of Too Soon.
- The scene where the two baggage handlers (one played by Al Franken) laugh at Beeks being molested by the gorilla was already a case of Crosses the Line Twice. But after Franken received numerous sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017 note , the scene definitely feels more awkward.
- Winthorpe saying "It's kill or be killed" and "Nothing you've seen in your life can prepare you for the unbridled carnage you're about to witness" as he and Billy enter the World Trade Center for the climax.
No relation to later events.
Found this on Scooby-Doo:
- "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: A passing comment from Velma that the live-action movie mentions that that continuity's Scrappy was a small adult with a gland disorder. It's a quick aside that is clearly meant for laughs, but the actual condition is real and very horrific-other symptoms include severe brain damage, weak and fragile bones, partial hair loss, sluggishness, shortened lifespan, oh, and breeders will euthanize diagnosed puppies, since, because the chronic treatment required for them just to live is so expensive, their demand, and thus their market value is low and they aren't worth selling. The live-action Scrappy only seems to be undersized and has some severe entitlement issues, but other wise seems perfectly healthy, though viewers familiar with the condition will cringe.
Sounds more like Fridge Horror to me, and with the last sentence, even that seems a little bit like a stretch.
I have a pre-emptive ask. If current events result in outright cancellation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, would works depicting said Olympics qualify?
SoundCloudWhat's funny about the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the first place?
According to the trope description, the moment can be funny or lighthearted before other events change the circumstances. I think the celebratory nature of the Olympics falls under the latter.
SoundCloudI would say, depending on exactly why it's cancelled, then most likely no, it doesn't count. It feels like the general hindsight trope trope issue of "this movie had an actor then that actor died and everything he did is sad now."
If the Olympics getting cancelled for random events unrelated to the Olympics themselves counts, then what doesn't?
There's also the question of where such an entry would even go, since the trope doesn't have a real life section. Is there a work that portrays the Olympics being cancelled due to an epi/pandemic and playing the event for humor or treating it lightly?

Well, the Olympics getting cancelled at all is a far more rare event. Regardless, if such a cancellation does happen, I’m sure we’ll see such misuse so I’ll keep an eye out to zap it and refer back to here.
I imagine the prediction of the future was intended to be accurate enough to be notable, though. Dewey Defeats Truman, perhaps?
Oh, no, I was referring to works depicting the Olympics as taking place.

SoundCloudThe way I think of these hindsight tropes, and have yet to be told I'm wrong, is there needs to be a direct link between two specific events. The Olympics existing doesn't count.
To put it another way, any pre-9/11 work showing the world trade center being destroyed isn't a Funny Aneurysm Moment. Any pre-9/11 featuring The towers being destroyed as a joke is, like in the cartoon that makes up the page's trope pic.
In this case, such a direct link would be something like a work depicting the Olympics being held while every competitor is sick as a dog.

I figured as much. Just wanted agreement because such misuse is almost inevitable if the situation does take that turn.
Well, I don’t think anyone put in any such examples yet...

SoundCloudCut.
Well, serves me right for waiting a few hours before posting and not refreshing the page.

Everyone should go post on the Hindsight Cleanup thread now, as Funny Aneurysm falls under the hindsight umbrella. I'm gonna holler a mod to close this.

Not sure, but either way, this thread needs to be closed due to the existence of the Hindsight cleanup thread.
back lolYeah I’ll look into those threads.

Why waste time when you can see the last sunset last? Can this thread be locked? We have the Hindsight thread now.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallEveryone would've ignored this thread if you hadn't bumped it. I know I'm not helping, but still. Why would you bump a thread that's been dormant for seven months just to ask for it to be locked?
And aside from that, why wasn't this thread locked back when the Hindsight thread was started?
I'm not angry, I'm just incredibly confused.

Christ, I apologize, I didn't realize that what I did was making people this angry.
Anyway I will holler to close.
Oh OK. I just thought that was how I alerted the mods to close this thread (which I probably should have just hollered to do.) I have since hollered them, don't know if they got it yet.
